00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm Christina.
00:02I'm Gerilyn.
00:03And today we're talking about why you should shampoo.
00:06What are shampoos?
00:07What are the chemicals inside of them?
00:09Why do we need them?
00:11We're going to get down to it in this episode.
00:14Shampoo is a product that we use to cleanse our hair.
00:20It typically contains surfactants.
00:22Some surfactants are harsher than others.
00:25It's kind of a big, bad, scary word in the curly world, but the truth is we do need
00:32to cleanse our hair and the whole thing about shampoos is you want to remove the product
00:36residue and the dirt and the sweat, but you don't want to remove the oils and the natural
00:44moisturizing properties that come out of our scalp.
00:47What you use to cleanse your hair will be different from what I use.
00:51We don't all need to use sulfates, but some people do.
00:54Yeah, I actually really like using sulfate-based shampoos because I know for sure all of the
00:59product that I've been wearing is just going to come right off of my hair strands.
01:03I need it to help my hair stay healthy and to help it grow.
01:06Yeah, normally a shampoo will contain a surfactant ingredient and a co-surfactant ingredient.
01:13Surfactants that a lot of us know are sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS.
01:20We often see that as like the big scary sulfate.
01:25And then the co-surfactant is coca-midopropyl-vetain.
01:28Yeah.
01:29Did I get that?
01:30She said it right.
01:31No.
01:32Yes, I did.
01:33You did.
01:34Also, what I like to do, and I don't know if you do this too, whenever I have a shampoo,
01:39I like to detangle when I shampoo.
01:42So I'll take a wide tooth comb and I'll start at the top or the end of my hair and work myself
01:48down to the roots.
01:49I like doing that to make sure that all of my curls are free of the product that was
01:53once in them.
01:55I don't detangle when I have shampoo in, but I do use a scalp brush.
02:00So that's like a round flat brush with these short little bristles.
02:06And I like to apply the shampoo and then take the scalp brush, it has like a ring for your
02:11finger, and just rub it back and forth ever so slightly.
02:15And for me, that just feels good, but also it stimulates the scalp and kind of helps agitate
02:22and remove the dirt.
02:24So there are a few different types of shampoo.
02:26The one that a lot of people use is the liquid shampoo, but there's also a shampoo bar and
02:31dry shampoo.
02:32I like suds.
02:33Yeah.
02:34That's how...
02:35I feel like my hair is clean when it has suds, but tell us a little bit more about the shampoos
02:39that don't suds up.
02:40If you're using like a no-poo or something that doesn't contain any sulfates, you may not
02:45get that sudsy, bubbly, or at least call it squeaky clean feeling because that can feel
02:52dry or drying to some people.
02:55I haven't used a shampoo bar yet, can you tell me about that?
02:58Yeah, so it looks like a soap bar, and I tried one.
03:03I didn't love it, not because I didn't love the shampoo, but I just didn't like having
03:07to rub the little bar all over your head.
03:10And I just found that it was a little bit more time consuming to apply it to my scalp
03:15because I did have to like rub it and get it all over, but a liquid, I felt like it was
03:20just easy to kind of cover my whole scalp in just a few seconds.
03:24But some people really do love shampoo bars.
03:26I would assume that if you have very dense hair and it's hard to get product to your
03:31scalp, then something like a shampoo bar would be useful because you're actually making contact
03:36with your scalp.
03:37And then another product applicator that I love is when they have like the pointed nozzle.
03:43Yes.
03:44That is so helpful because when you're shampooing, you really want to be cleaning your scalp, but
03:49you don't really want to get shampoo on like the ends of your hair because they're already
03:54more fragile and dry.
03:56You're really focusing the product on your scalp, and that pointy applicator helps you
04:00do that.
04:01Yeah, there's a really good apple cider root rinse that I really, really love.
04:05It has that awesome nozzle, so I can just drive it onto my scalp, just up and down, and it's
04:11awesome.
04:12I absolutely love that.
04:13And then she's scalp.
04:14So the scalp brush products where I'm like putting it onto my scalp.
04:18I like that.
04:19Allie K Naturals also has a really good pointed applicator and girl plus hair or girl in hair.
04:26They also have one.
04:27Also, there's dry shampoos.
04:30So women like me that have type four hair, super dense, coarse in a lot of places on my head,
04:36we don't really like using dry shampoo.
04:39However, I did use one, one time, and it worked too well.
04:45It actually took all of the moisture, all of the oils, out of my scalp, and it was a
04:50nightmare for me.
04:52But there are a lot of people that absolutely swear by them, and for those people, I say
04:56keep it up, keep doing you.
04:58If you love dry shampoos, use them.
05:01Maybe if you have really fine hair or really loosely wavy hair, maybe that's something you're
05:08using to help stretch out the days in between wash days, but they don't clean your hair.
05:13So if you really need to clean your hair, go ahead and use a regular shampoo because a
05:18dry shampoo is not really going to do that.
05:21So the most important part of picking out your shampoo is to turn over the product and
05:25read the label.
05:26Those ingredients are going to tell you everything that you need to know.
05:30And don't just trust that because it's sold in a store, it's going to be good for you.
05:34Because in the US, we only ban 11 ingredients from shampoos, but in Canada, it's over 500.
05:41And in Europe, it's like 1300.
05:44So really get to know your labels.
05:46I feel like that is the most important part of really choosing any product that you're
05:50putting on your hair.
05:52Absolutely.
05:53So before you actually go full throttle and put the shampoo on your scalp and your hair,
05:58do a small sample test on your skin, maybe even on the inside of your elbow where it's
06:03really sensitive, just a little wipe down and just see if there's some sort of reaction.
06:10Don't use that product.
06:11Yeah.
06:12So definitely test it first.
06:13Yeah.
06:14We'll leave an article below that has more information about ingredients because those names can be
06:19really long and we're not going to talk about them all right now, but you can find, the good
06:24thing is you can seek out that kind of information fairly easily.
06:28So you've probably heard about the no poo movement.
06:31If you have not heard about that, it's essentially where people are not using traditional types
06:37of shampoos or shampoo bars, but they're using alternative ingredients to cleanse their hair
06:42and to cleanse their scalp, such as baking soda, apple cider vinegar, various oils so that they
06:51aren't being harsh to their scalp and they're not being harsh on their strands.
06:56They just want to make sure their alternative is very gentle.
07:01It's to do with your pH level.
07:02So if you're going to use something like baking soda on your hair, then you're going to want
07:07to use apple cider vinegar afterwards because that's acidic or a lemon.
07:13Baking soda and apple cider vinegar can actually be quite harsh on your hair.
07:17So some people use these and love them.
07:20And if you do, then just keep using them, but some people find that it can be kind of harsh
07:25on the strands.
07:26Yeah.
07:27I would imagine that if you are using those natural methods to clean your hair, you're going
07:33to have to add in so much more moisture in the whole conditioning, deep conditioning process.
07:39So that's kind of a challenge for you too.
07:41Be careful about the ingredients that you select because you actually might be causing a longer
07:46wash day for yourself in the very end.
07:48Yeah.
07:49It is super important to shampoo, but if you find that it's very drying for you, then I would
07:53recommend doing a pre-poo.
07:55So a lot of naturals will do like an oil pre-poo or some sort of deep conditioning pre-poo so
08:04that they're putting a lot of moisture into their hair before they're going to cleanse
08:08and remove more moisture along with the dirt.
08:11So if you have questions about shampoo, let us know down in the comments below.
