New research shows teenagers are developing a growing dependence on nicotine. The royal children's Hospital study also reveals nearly half of parents of teens who smoke or vape, don't know they're doing it. Paediatrician and Director of the National Child Health Poll Dr Anthea Rhodes says the variety and potency of nicotine products is making it harder to curb children's addiction.

00:00This is really the first time we've had research showing just how common that dependence is in teenagers.
00:07So signs of dependence or addiction, we use dependence often as a medical term,
00:12include things like looking for some source of nicotine when you first wake up,
00:17feeling like you might have trouble getting through a period of the day without it,
00:20intense feelings of cravings or perhaps trying to cut back and not being able to.
00:24The tricky things about nicotine these days is it's not sort of behind the back of the school shed,
00:29you know, trying to conceal the aroma like it was perhaps back in our day.
00:33Instead, use of nicotine is happening in plain sight.
00:36So lots of smokeless products.
00:38So that includes pouches which are slipped up under the gum, upper decky is the term for parking something up there
00:45that actually will allow nicotine to be absorbed silently, quietly over the day in a classroom, for example.
00:50And lots of vapes are also without vapor or low vapor.
00:53So sort of smokeless.
00:54So lots of this is easily hidden.
00:56And that often is the type of product that a young person who might be becoming dependent is using
