00:01This is a really important paper.
00:04It draws from a wide range of different types of studies, everything from chemical studies
00:08to medical records to studies in animals.
00:11And it brings all that research together to say that, you know what, the harms of vaping
00:16do include the cause of cancer.
00:18It does make a difference to behaviour if we share this message.
00:21We know that when we have things like campaigns on television, in bus shelters, running on
00:27social media, those campaigns that communicate how important it is to quit smoking and to
00:32quit vaping, they're effective.
00:33But they're only effective if people see them.
00:35I'm really concerned that the absolute explosion in illicit tobacco retailers, I mean they're
00:41selling them in broad daylight in neighbourhoods all across Australia, is undermining our public
00:46health success, particularly in young adults.
00:49They have this double whammy of they were the first to take up vaping, which we know makes
00:53you more vulnerable to becoming a smoker.
00:55And now we have these cheap cigarettes that are widely available and targeted them.
00:59I'm really concerned that we will see an increase in smoking rates in this group at the end of
01:03this year.
01:04I hope that I'm wrong and that, you know, rates do continue to go down.
