00:38finding more than a quarter of Australians aged 12 to 17 have tried a nicotine product,
00:44such as vapes, tobacco pouches and cigarettes.
00:48Around 12% were using nicotine regularly
00:51and around half of current users wanted to quit or cut down.
00:55Over the last decade we had seen dropping rates of tobacco use in young people
01:01and now we're seeing those pick up and that's a major concern.
01:04What we're seeing is more different types of products,
01:07young people experimenting with different types of use
01:10and perhaps of most concern we've seen high rates of signs of dependence or addiction.
01:15Researchers were alarmed to find three quarters of young people
01:19showing signs of dependence at a critical time in their development.
01:24They say that is no accident.
01:26If use starts in those early years,
01:29dependence is more likely and it can be lifelong.
01:32So that's a lifelong customer, if you like,
01:34for those people who might be selling nicotine based products.
01:38Unsurprisingly, most children are hiding their addiction from parents.
01:42But quit says kids shouldn't be afraid to reach out.
01:46Young people often don't realise that they're now in a position
01:49where they are finding themselves with an addiction.
