Aussie Lobster Men - Season 5 Episode 5
Transcript
00:00Previously...
00:02Dad!
00:04Look at Bryce, he's happy!
00:06That's a happy llama if I've ever seen a happy llama.
00:09The winter lobster hunting season is underway.
00:12160 on the knocker, 320 for the day.
00:17Risking it all, in pursuit of the world's most prized seafood delicacy,
00:22is a fleet of young gun lobstermen.
00:25Take a few more of them, Johnny.
00:27And a canny old sea dog, an Aussie lobster legend.
00:32Yeah, baby!
00:33That's what we're talking about.
00:35Hello, ladies!
00:42Take it, it's too long.
00:57I feel like my eyes are just hanging out my f***ing head right now.
01:02Didn't get to bed till probably half of ten o'clock last night.
01:05The south-east coast of Tasmania,
01:07and Miles and Dehi Timmy are fighting off exhaustion,
01:11Timmy showing signs of physical fatigue,
01:14and a dismal dawn catch rate is not helping team morale.
01:19Yeah, not real flash this morning.
01:21A bit shitty.
01:23It's been taking us a bit longer,
01:26because obviously we've only got one guy.
01:28Had half an hour of sleep, and we got 3.30.
01:31It's not long enough, though, is it?
01:33But, yeah, Tim, he hasn't complained once.
01:37He's been putting in 110%.
01:42Ah, what a f***ing joke!
01:45It's a huge job to do this by yourself.
01:47It's been a lot of sorting and a lot of fish to go through in the pot.
01:50I bet he's wishing he had someone else giving him a hand, though,
01:53because they're big days.
01:55F***, I'm all just under.
01:58I wish about two crew would be finishing so much f***ing earlier.
02:02Do you know anything out of it?
02:08Nah.
02:09It's a disappointing morning for Team Pyrrha,
02:12but Miles still leads the tally board with 686 lobsters.
02:17The Chieftain holds second place on 682.
02:22The bold contender has 647 lobsters in the tank.
02:27And the Buran is in fourth place on 365.
02:33Get him untied and all that sort of stuff, please, Johnny.
02:36As to the prices,
02:38lobsters over a kilo are currently selling for between $65 and $85 a kilo.
02:45Lobsters under a kilo are selling for $55 to $60 a kilo.
02:51Hello, boys!
02:52This morning on Aussie Lobster Inn, the boys are exhausted.
02:58The crew of the Buran is hunting lobsters inshore
03:01along the south-west coast of Tasmania.
03:04If working next to jagged shards of razor-sharp quartzite
03:08wasn't stressful enough...
03:10You have to be on the ball with this next one, please, Johnny.
03:13Yeah, mate.
03:14Jack's made a big, risky call.
03:16If his next shot's a fizzer, he's shifting locations.
03:20And that will cost him money.
03:23Ah, a bit anxious.
03:25A lot hanging on this one, whether we stay, whether we go.
03:29Could go either way this morning, really.
03:31Stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment.
03:35I don't want to leave fish to find fish,
03:37but the fish down here have just been so touch-and-go.
03:40We might have to take that risk.
03:41We've started off a little bit slow.
03:44First three pots, we've got one fish.
03:47So if we can't get 100 fish for this shot,
03:49we're going to make a move north, I reckon.
03:51Poke your little heads out, come on.
03:54So where I'd go if I took off,
03:56you know, that's probably going to be another $300 in field
03:58just to get there.
04:00And then we'd lose a day shot, too, so...
04:02There they be.
04:03We could put five, six, seven, ten rounds
04:06worth of fish on this boat real fast,
04:08you know, if we have a good one.
04:09Got him, Johnny?
04:10Got him, bruv.
04:11Johnny's only you, so he's still learning,
04:14but he's picking up a lot of little things, you know.
04:17I don't mind taking some that's never done it before,
04:19like Johnny had never done it before,
04:20but, yeah, you get to train them the way that you like.
04:23It's this third or fourth trip that he's ever done,
04:26so, you know, with the wheel out to the back of the boat,
04:28I can keep an eye on everything that Johnny's doing,
04:30so, yeah, we can't afford to have any f*** ups.
04:34Oh, there's one good one in there.
04:36One, Kaz?
04:37Not a good start.
04:38At the stage of this, we'll definitely f*** off, I think.
04:49Craft ball shot, all due.
04:515.30am for Friars,
04:54and Bryce's night shot pots have hit shallow bottom,
04:58and that's bad news for everyone.
05:00The deckies all get a cut of the gross profit,
05:04and this morning's gross profit is wobbly at best.
05:08A lot of sharks coming up this morning.
05:10Not enough lobs.
05:12What's that you got there, mate?
05:14Four draft ball shots.
05:15Can we call that?
05:17Shark orgy.
05:18This morning's not looking very good.
05:20It's the opposite of yesterday morning.
05:22The swirl's still up.
05:23I've gone in too shallow.
05:25I reckon it's my mistake.
05:27I think Bryce is a bit upset.
05:29He's always been lobbed.
05:31We don't like a sad Bryce.
05:33Sad Bryce is sad.
05:34We want a happy Bryce.
05:36Wahey!
05:37He's our big lobby!
05:39What's Bryce complaining about?
05:42We're getting big juicy red lobsters.
05:45Not as many as yesterday,
05:46but we're still getting big juicy red lobsters.
05:48Like, I probably don't even have to measure him,
05:51but I will anyway.
05:52Like, yeah, he's size.
05:53And look, look at this.
05:56He's about a kilo and a half.
05:581.5 kilo probably.
06:00That's three.
06:01That's good.
06:02You can't be sad when you've got fish that size on your boat.
06:04But they're a bit slower than yesterday,
06:06and I think that's why Bryce is sad.
06:07Bryce wants to get better every day, but that's okay.
06:11Bryce doesn't know it yet,
06:13but he leads Squizzy by 35 lobsters.
06:16Bryce has been chasing the old dog for years,
06:19without success.
06:21We've got 15 pots on.
06:23We've got a full bin of crows.
06:25That's good.
06:26But Bryce...
06:27Bryce!
06:28He's a little sad sack,
06:29because we don't have as many as we did yesterday morning.
06:32And then Bryce is probably thinking,
06:34oh, Squizzy's got 150 on already.
06:36Oh, Squizzy's got bloody 400 off 15 pots.
06:40That's what he's going through his head.
06:42But I'll tell you right now, Bryce.
06:44I'll tell you right now.
06:46He doesn't.
06:47Measure the fish down after this one.
06:49Can he stop being a sad sack?
06:51Kind of puts a downer on the day, doesn't it?
06:53It does.
06:54How do we get a happy price?
06:55Well, we need, like, 100 lobs.
07:02Come on, Rhino!
07:06The rocky shallows of Pedra Branca are perilous.
07:09Squizzy's having second thoughts about staying here.
07:13When I set these pots last night,
07:15I was chasing big reds.
07:17The price is up on the bigger fish.
07:19And I thought,
07:20these fish have not gone all year.
07:23And I had a gut feeling they're going to be all right.
07:29Ah, ****.
07:32Well, they're not.
07:33They are blank and it ain't going to improve.
07:40I just got my front teeth kicked in.
07:43Too shallow.
07:44Don't shoot under 24.
07:46Fab and Squizzy.
07:48What happens when you go for a few redder ones?
07:50Blank Pots and Hungry Octopus.
07:55It's a double dose of Pedra Branca pain
07:58for the crew of The Bold Contender.
08:00Our **** one.
08:01What?
08:02**** two?
08:03Three pots in a row of octopus.
08:06Come on.
08:07Give us a chance.
08:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:12Oh, look at that.
08:13Something different.
08:15Lobsters.
08:16The lobsters are there.
08:21The bottom's full of them.
08:22Just need more of them, Rhino.
08:23More of them.
08:24They're standing in the holes and they're saying,
08:26we're not moving.
08:31****.
08:32Yeah, that was my bad.
08:33I put the anchor **** thing on because of the ****.
08:38The problem is,
08:39because the days are dragging out,
08:40you've got to make mistakes.
08:41What the ****?
08:42You can't get your **** fingers in them.
08:44Ah, **** me!
08:47Nowhere to grab the **** knees.
08:49Yeah, it looks like a beautiful morning out there today,
08:51but I'll tell you what,
08:53it's just...
08:54Tim's getting really frustrated.
08:56There's so much tension in the boat.
08:59From the boat.
09:04Every **** shot.
09:07He's losing his temper.
09:08You know?
09:10He's starting to realise that,
09:12you know, it's all getting a little bit too much.
09:16And I think he's basically our breaking point.
09:18**** ten miles away.
09:22We're going to have to make some changes here.
09:30Ah, **** fight the **** every time.
09:34Miles and Timmy's relationship is at breaking point.
09:38Timmy's exhausted.
09:40And Miles' patience for silly mistakes is wearing thin.
09:45Ah, **** me!
09:48Are you not going to let the boys' tight on?
09:50I've still got to move everything, man.
09:53I don't really like people, so...
09:56It's not working with just Tim.
09:57If we carry on the way we're going,
10:00me and Tim are just going to have a huge argument,
10:02and, you know, it's just all going to turn to ****, basically.
10:06Ah, **** me!
10:09It shouldn't be taking you 20 hours to get for 100 pounds.
10:14Many lobster boats are run with single-decky crews.
10:17Johnny handles the Buran on his own,
10:19and he has less experience than Timmy.
10:22But the Buran's deck is tiny.
10:24The Pira's is huge.
10:27And that lengthens every move Timmy makes.
10:30Then there's the rats.
10:32Undersized lobsters.
10:34Sometimes up to 20 for just two keepers.
10:37It's a disaster combination.
10:39Miles is not happy.
10:40I've just got to make a decision which best suits my business right now.
10:45And that's just the way it is.
10:47Ah, **** me!
10:48I don't want the **** sitting so **** out of this line.
10:51**** me!
10:53I'll give you a hand to move these poles.
10:54Working solo as a deckhand definitely pays more.
10:58And Timmy has six kids to feed,
11:01which is why he asked Miles to run solo in the first place.
11:05I was just struggling to keep up.
11:07No, we're all right, mate. We're getting through it.
11:09But Miles has a mountain of debt to repay.
11:12He needs to keep his diesel burn low
11:14and deliver a minimum of two shots a day.
11:17He needs a decky with energy.
11:19I think we definitely need to get a second deckhand.
11:23I've got someone in mind who I might ask
11:26and see if they're available.
11:28Hello, hello.
11:29Hi, mate. What's happening?
11:31No, hold on, mate. What do I feel?
11:33Oh, not much. It's that fishing at the moment.
11:36Yeah, nice, nice.
11:38Yeah, would you be keen on coming to do a trip?
11:40Yeah, I'd be keen to a trip, yeah.
11:43That'd be awesome.
11:47I think this is it, Loggie.
11:50Four, two, four, ten, eight, fifty.
11:53That's all.
11:55That's all? Yeah.
11:57That's all there is.
11:59What a difference a few hours at sea can make.
12:01The Chieftain's inshore night shot came good in the end
12:05and Bryce has pulled some big lobsters.
12:08I wouldn't say I'm, as Lockie says, grumpy or anything.
12:11It's just a bit disheartening after yesterday's efforts.
12:14You know, when blanks start coming up,
12:16you've got to focus on every pot.
12:17You want to see what it was on.
12:19You want to see, you know, why.
12:21Then when you've got someone in here going,
12:23you're just like, shut up. I'm focusing here.
12:27We've got a hundred. That's good.
12:29Happy days.
12:31It's just a new amount of effort.
12:32Trying to make sure you get everything perfect
12:34and then you get a hundred.
12:35I'm happy.
12:36I'm happy.
12:37Bryce probably won't be, but that's all right.
12:38We're happy.
12:40The market always wants the reds.
12:41It always wants the bigger fish.
12:43That's what I was trying to target.
12:46We'll just focus on the day shot now.
12:48I think hopefully we're the first ones out here
12:50and we can hit the same strip that I was happy with yesterday.
12:55Bryce got a hundred, Johnny, so pressure's on for these ones.
12:58How many, Johnny?
13:00Three, cuz.
13:02Still getting three or four a pot.
13:06But in saying that,
13:07there's been quite a few that have had bugger all in them.
13:14We're borderline.
13:16Two pots off halfway.
13:18We've got 47 so far.
13:20Couple of good pots.
13:21Couple of pretty average pots.
13:22See how the other half goes.
13:23See whether we stay.
13:24See whether we go.
13:25Jack has set a target for his next shot of 100 lobsters.
13:30Fail, and they'll need to relocate to a new spot.
13:34I'm feeling that we're gonna move spots today.
13:36I'm feeling Jackie boy's gonna say,
13:39we're going up further up the west coast further.
13:42We've got bills to pay.
13:44We've got families to feed.
13:45And there's my father as well, you know.
13:47First spot from the second half, Johnny.
13:50What's gonna happen?
13:51Got a lot of wine on it.
13:52The old man bought this boat in 2011.
13:55And that's when I jumped on deck with him.
13:56He's 66 now,
13:57so I'm sort of starting to take over a lot of things that he does.
14:00So my old man actually owns the boat that I drive.
14:04And he's a typical old fellow, you know.
14:05He's got expectations of what he wants me to catch every shot.
14:09So we really need to put some fish on this boat.
14:10That looks a bit more promising, Johnny.
14:13One.
14:15Oh, oh, oh.
14:17The next few pots will decide if Jack stays or goes.
14:21Come on you , where are you?
14:24Put the crazy going to sleep.
14:28Nah, we pulled about 20 through here and we've made another 10 feet.
14:33Four of them come out of one pot.
14:34I was really hoping for a bit more this morning.
14:37People let down.
14:39F*** it, Johnny.
14:40I think I'm gonna make the call, buddy.
14:42I think that's a wise idea, bruv.
14:45I think we might f*** off and try and find f***ing greener pastures.
14:48Yep. Go up a bit further.
14:50Yeah.
14:51I think we'll disappear.
14:52I concur.
14:53Day five at sea and the fleet seems to be suffering from a case of the mid-season blues.
15:00Squizzy's Pedra Branca plan has backfired.
15:03Jack's inshore strategy has drawn a blank.
15:06And Miles has a looming workplace safety issue.
15:10Is it finally Bryce's time to shine?
15:18F*** these pots.
15:19Miles might have a solution to his decky fatigue problem.
15:23He's found a second deckhand, Cody, who's ready to join the Pyrrha.
15:28But to make that happen, Miles has to head back to port.
15:32It's too much, really, any single deckhand.
15:35We're gonna have to get Cody to come save the day for us.
15:39But first, he has to break the news to Timmy.
15:42Oh, man. F***ing awful.
15:44Tim just struggles to get along with other people, basically.
15:48F*** down!
15:50I don't think Tim's gonna like the news.
15:52So I'm gonna try and do it in a way that he's not gonna feel too let down by the situation.
15:57Oh, s***.
15:59Look, we'll just see how it goes.
16:02Look, I was thinking about chucking a few fish off.
16:04Yeah.
16:05What do you reckon if we get Cody to come and jump on with us?
16:08Up you.
16:09I've already sort of spoken to Cody.
16:14Have ya?
16:15Yeah.
16:16We've got another six days to go.
16:17Yeah, mate.
16:19Yeah, I'll tell you, it's a bloody hard job, this job.
16:22But it would only be for this tree.
16:24Yeah, right, yeah.
16:25You've got to think about catching crayfish, you know, you've got to think about selling your fish.
16:30And then you've also got to be a bloody, you know, a psychiatrist at times, too.
16:35I'm an easy man.
16:36Don't think I'm gonna be pissed off if you do it or anything.
16:38I'm hurting a bit, so...
16:40Yeah, yeah.
16:41Oh, I just wanna run that past you, but...
16:43I only want beer, so that's alright.
16:45Yeah.
16:47That's cool.
16:49I think, in a sense, Tim's relieved, you know, because...
16:53I don't think we could've sustained doing what we were doing.
16:58But look, it's the best decision.
17:00Now the trouble is we're gonna try and find someone to take this f***ing fish today.
17:11We are going so shit, he's not funny.
17:13The bold contender is floundering.
17:19What a disaster this morning is.
17:22Blank, blank, blank, blank, blank, blank, blank, blank, blank.
17:27We won't make a hundred.
17:29And you want to make a hundred a shot.
17:32I'm starting to doubt meself about coming out here.
17:35I'm starting to think nearly had 300 fish for a day and you left it, you f***ing idiot.
17:42Loser!
17:45Well, we're not going real well, but I feel like our luck's gonna change soon.
17:49I'd say it looks a bit dismal in there this morning.
17:52We're pulling blank after blank.
17:55I've gone way too shallow.
17:57I've gone chasing the big reds and they're not running.
18:00Wow!
18:02It's a good thing Squizzy's got no hair,
18:05because he would've pulled it all out after this shot.
18:07Catch some lobsters!
18:12Catch some lobsters, righto!
18:16Hey!
18:18We need to catch some lobsters!
18:20F*** those we do!
18:21Hurry, come up to Pedro!
18:24You can miss them by a boat length at Pedro.
18:27And it's pot luck.
18:29This is the thing about being a fisherman.
18:32When you're catching, you're happy.
18:34When you're not catching, you're not happy.
18:36Then you start doubting yourself.
18:39Be a lobster fisherman, they said.
18:42Come chase some big fish, they said.
18:44You've just got to hang in there.
18:46You've just got to hang in there and be prepared to grind.
18:51Oh, this looks better!
18:54Rhino, what is that?
18:57Yeah, baby!
18:59Hello!
19:01The elusive lobster!
19:03Finally!
19:05Pot of red!
19:07This is what makes Pedro so frustrating for me.
19:13You look at the sounder and you go,
19:15why is the other four blank and this one's got fish?
19:19That's just...
19:21an odd pot.
19:22That's how Pedro is.
19:24That's an arsehole in place.
19:30I'll get you to give me a hand.
19:31Yeah, so I'll just chuck him in there.
19:32You chuck him down the hole.
19:33They're just a good-looking fish, aren't they?
19:36Especially when they're the right colour.
19:38Hopefully we get a few bigger ones in the mix like this tomorrow.
19:43Jack and Johnny count in 83 good-sized lobsters,
19:49but it's not enough to stay.
19:52They'll be hoping for a lot more when they get to their new location
19:57in an area called the Giblin.
19:59Some of the biggest players I've caught have been from the Giblin.
20:03It's a great place. I love fishing up there.
20:06If we can get some big ones over a couple of kilos,
20:09you know, we're looking at $85 a kilo.
20:12Just as they're about to bail out, Jack spots a mate.
20:16It's a good opportunity for intel.
20:19Outside, please, Johnny.
20:21There were rain inside of my father's other boats.
20:24Warren Jager, he's driving it for us now.
20:26Probably the best skipper we've had on there.
20:28I forgot.
20:30Warren Jager is almost 80 years old and still hunting lobsters.
20:34Yeah, I reckon those Jagers, you know, they could catch a K in a bathtub.
20:39How's the catches been?
20:41I couldn't believe how poor they were.
20:43No.
20:45Plank, plank, plank, plank.
20:47One, plank, two.
20:49Just chatting to Warren, it sounds like he's been going just as average as I had.
20:52He's had some pretty bad shots too.
20:53All right.
20:55All right.
20:57See ya, Nara.
20:58See ya, boys.
21:00Hopefully I've made the right call by standing up to the Giblin.
21:11This morning's been a total disaster.
21:14Just set two off.
21:16The bolt contender is setting its day shot.
21:19Squizzy's hoping it's better than his last night shot,
21:21which netted the crew only 86 lobsters.
21:25The night shots are going to really hurt us.
21:29We had 18 plank pots this morning out of 50.
21:32That's nearly half.
21:34We feel like a bit of a bloody idiot now.
21:38Yep!
21:40I just want to retire.
21:42Go sit on the couch.
21:44Watch days of our lives or something like that.
21:47Sleep 18 hours a day.
21:48So the way I'm going, that's going to be my retirement plan.
21:52I'm filling my age this morning.
21:54It's a young man's game.
21:56I can remember when I was 30, I was fit, cocky.
21:59You play cricket, you go play football and then still be a fisherman.
22:02But I'm a lot older now and the body's not in the best condition, carrying a bit of weight.
22:07Now when you go home, you sit on the couch, have a glass of wine, pat the dog and should probably take the dog for a walk, but can't be bothered because I'm too sore for me fishing through it.
22:18Getting old sucks.
22:20Has the veteran skipper finally met his match?
22:25Is it the time of the young guns?
22:27Or does the old sea dog still have a few tricks up his sleeve?
22:32There's one thing about being a fisherman.
22:34All other fishermen want to know what you're catching.
22:37Maybe it's time to do an old rope-a-dope.
22:41Tell them we're killing the pig.
22:44And they all come down here.
22:46And we'll grab all our pots and go back up there.
22:50That's a low act though.
22:55It'll work.
22:57It'll bloody work.
22:59Misdirection.
23:01It's exactly what Miles did to Bryce 72 hours ago.
23:06And it worked.
23:08Hey!
23:09It's all good, just relax.
23:11Timmy's coming to terms with Miles' decision to head into port and pick up a second deckie.
23:18Meanwhile, Miles is on to his next conundrum.
23:22Yes!
23:23Don't know what's going to happen to any of this great price.
23:25Yeah, the price of lobsters changes all the time.
23:29It's like any industry.
23:30There's supply and demand.
23:32So I just got a text come through from a fish buyer that offered me $55,
23:36which is about $5 less than I was expecting.
23:40It could go a little lower than $55, though.
23:42That price could easily drop down to $45 a kilo within a matter of days.
23:47If that price does drop $10 a kilo, we stand to lose about $7,000.
23:51What?
23:53Yes, not sure what to do, to be honest.
24:04What's going on, mate?
24:06What are you up to?
24:08I was just pumping down the tank.
24:09Oh, yeah, you must be whacking them, man.
24:13No, you know us. We're not whacking them.
24:15Ten!
24:17Ten?
24:19Yeah.
24:20Mate, you've got to be all excited now.
24:22No, we're not getting big numbers, but enough to keep us happy.
24:25Oh, yeah.
24:27I know he's busy well enough.
24:30You can't believe a word the guy says, like, honestly.
24:33No one else out there, or...?
24:35Nah.
24:36At the end of the day, Myles doesn't pay my bills.
24:39Do you know if anyone else has been out there?
24:42Um, no, I don't think so.
24:45He's staying there, isn't he?
24:47So he must be doing all right.
24:48All right, mate.
24:49All right, then, mate.
24:50All right.
24:51Roger. Catch up.
24:52See ya. Take care.
24:54Well, he did a good job downplaying that a bit, didn't he?
24:58Oh, there's definitely some life power there.
25:01If I can't catch a lobster, I might as well go catch a fisherman.
25:04Never a dull moment.
25:06There is never a dull moment when you're fishing.
25:12I'm trying to f***ing think.
25:14So much has changed today.
25:15Cray price.
25:17I'm gonna go pick up another crew.
25:19Miles has a decision to make.
25:22Unload at $55 a kilo,
25:25or keep his catch on board and steam on,
25:29hoping the price will rise.
25:31I suppose we'd better just spray the fish off it,
25:34and it's probably the safer option,
25:35unless you give him that money.
25:37If Miles cashes in at $55,
25:40he stands to earn north of $35,000,
25:43and he'll be well ahead of the rest of the fleet
25:47in terms of making bank.
25:49So I'm full steam ahead to Dover.
25:51But his sell-now strategy is not without its risks.
25:54So that's eight hours of travelling there and back.
25:57You know, another four hours to unload and pick up Cody.
26:01We're sort of looking at about a 12-hour turnaround here, really,
26:03which is a bit of shame to miss out on that fishing time,
26:06but, you know, look,
26:08I think we're making the right decision here.
26:10We're gonna miss out on a shot doing this,
26:12which really pisses me off.
26:14Anyway, f*** it.
26:16We're only missing one shot out of the whole lot, you know?
26:19We'll get the gear done quicker.
26:20Yeah.
26:21I'm a bit sore.
26:22Cody owes me a 10-pack, so if he doesn't bring it,
26:24you haven't seen me crabby yet.
26:26Hard joking.
26:27Missing a shot will definitely compromise Miles' command
26:31over the rest of the fleet.
26:33147.
26:36So, yeah, that's pretty good.
26:38The Pira has 833 lobsters in the tank.
26:42Bryce is in second place with 782.
26:46The bold contender is on 733.
26:50And the Buran remains in fourth place on 448 lobsters.
26:54Oh, we've got Bryce.
26:58Hopefully they don't start throwing anything at us.
27:02Bryce has pissed me off a bit this trip,
27:04but, look, I'm not gonna hold a grudge against him.
27:08We'll go over and say hello.
27:09We've got to be prepared for something, Tim.
27:13Better give me the eggs, then.
27:17Miles has just rocked up out of nowhere,
27:19so I don't know what he's up to.
27:21It's a bit odd.
27:22How you going?
27:23I won't come too close.
27:25We're bloody...
27:27You might hit me with your mask, mate.
27:29Well, yeah, we're just going in.
27:31We're gonna just get rid of our fish.
27:32Might as well, you know.
27:34Yeah, okay, no worries.
27:35If the price drops,
27:36I know you've unloaded a shit ton.
27:40It's probably got Bryce worried that I'm going in and unloading.
27:43I'm sure he'll be overthinking the whole situation,
27:46but I don't really care, like...
27:48He's unloading, which I find odd.
27:50I'm wondering whether something's happening in the market
27:53that's not good, so...
27:55Now, if he unloads a lot, a lot more than I think he has,
27:58then the processors are gonna realise that, hey,
28:01these guys are catching a fair few fish,
28:03and I reckon the price will follow suit,
28:05the price will drop,
28:06and now the fish on my boat are devalued.
28:09I just don't like the added stress of,
28:11you know what price you could get,
28:12what the fish are worth on your boat,
28:15and if you lose money,
28:19there's nothing you never had to start with,
28:21but mentally you did.
28:22Yeah.
28:33Steaming off.
28:34We're gonna go for a little journey.
28:37Jack and Johnny are heading to the Giblin,
28:39a remote area halfway between Hobart and Strawn.
28:44It's a long way away from anything.
28:46The only way to get to the Giblin is by boat.
28:48It's a really beautiful place, you know.
28:50It's so much greenery around.
28:52It's one of my favourite places to fish on the west coast.
28:55Ah, yeah, so we've made it up to the Giblin.
28:57I love it here.
28:58It is.
28:59Good fishing, big fish.
29:00Day fish are close.
29:01Like, everything about this area is good.
29:05Jack needs the Giblin to pay big time,
29:08because it owes him big time.
29:11Just to get here, he's had to give up a full day shot.
29:15So it's a risk at the end of the day.
29:16Missing a shot could be a thousand bucks worth of fish,
29:19it could be five grand's worth of fish.
29:20Oh, no, Johnny.
29:24We're invested now.
29:25We're here.
29:26We need to get some big fish.
29:27We need plenty of them to get our numbers back up to where we want to be at.
29:34Hopefully we can hit the nail on the head.
29:36Righto, Johnny.
29:40Ah, Johnny, pull that in, mate.
29:41Pull it in.
29:42Pull it in.
29:43Pull it in.
29:44Pull it in.
29:48Get the grapple ready.
29:51What's happened?
29:52Johnny's made a costly error.
29:54He's just dropped a pot with no floats.
29:57Didn't see this one.
29:58Come boil you, bud.
29:59Johnny hasn't put the boilies on the right, bro.
30:01And that's how easy it is just to lose one straight out of the side.
30:09Get anything?
30:10You got two.
30:11Oh, we got two!
30:12Yep.
30:13We only got 100 this morning.
30:14The target for today's day shot is going to be 160.
30:17Finishing the day for 260, that's still a good day.
30:20Where the is it?
30:21Lucky should be watching where the floats are.
30:23We're having really strong tides.
30:25It's legit completely down.
30:26When the tide's doing this, I need you to be looking.
30:29Yeah, okay.
30:30He asked me how many logs we've got, so I was trying to figure out.
30:31Yeah, but you can talk and look elsewhere.
30:33Go to the other side.
30:34I'm looking in.
30:35Oh, what have I said?
30:38I'm the skipper.
30:39Listen to me.
30:40You're the deckhand.
30:41Go to the back.
30:42Oh, .
30:43Yes, man.
30:44You need to learn to just do as you're told.
30:46Do as you're told.
30:47What do you mean?
30:48I'm doing my job.
30:49I'm looking for it.
30:50I'm looking for it.
30:51Lucky struggles to differentiate between friendship, work and back to friendship.
30:57Do as I'm told, mate.
30:58me dead.
30:59I can do it in a second.
31:01Just there.
31:02The moment I finish having a go at him, I'm back to friendship.
31:05Shot, mate!
31:06I blame me for everything.
31:08Nah, I need it.
31:09I'm doing it myself.
31:10I'm doing it myself.
31:11You know, I'm more than happy for him to yap, yap, yap in the corner.
31:15One, two pots, three pots in.
31:17He already pissed me off.
31:19Do as you're told, mate.
31:20It's not complicated.
31:22Do as you're told.
31:23Do as you're told, mate.
31:25Do as you're told.
31:26Why can't you listen?
31:28Why do you have to argue about everything?
31:29Oh, .
31:30Because now you're making more of a scene, so I'm happy to go with it.
31:32Yeah, whatever.
31:33.
31:34Talk to me normally.
31:35I don't have to bend down and go, please and thank you, Lockie, every single time.
31:39He's like a brother to me some days, but either way, your brothers still annoy you.
31:44Oh, come on fishies, please, please, please.
31:50Thanks.
31:51The bold contender is about to pull their first set of day pods.
31:55Every time we're going to Pedro of late, it's failed for us badly.
32:00Come on, lobster gods.
32:02Be nice.
32:03And hoodie.
32:04We want lobster.
32:05And hoodie.
32:06We want lobster.
32:07It's decision time.
32:08If it's shit, we go.
32:10It's that simple.
32:12I'm nervous as hell.
32:14Come on, baby.
32:16Oh!
32:17Oh, yeah, baby!
32:20Oh, yeah, baby!
32:22We've got some doggies in there!
32:24Hey?
32:25Oh!
32:26Yeah.
32:27Yeah.
32:28Yeah.
32:29Now this makes us happy.
32:32Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
32:35Two kilos right there.
32:38That's a big fish!
32:40The price is up.
32:41Yeah!
32:42On the fish over a kilo, and that's why we're here.
32:45F***ing hell, it's the dollars in there, man.
32:47F***ing hell.
32:48It's like three, four over a kilo.
32:53There's nothing better feeling than right now.
32:56Nice!
32:57This is what it's all about.
32:59Big dogs.
33:03Great numbers.
33:04Lucky 13!
33:05Lucky 13!
33:06Lucky 13!
33:07This is why I love being a fisherman.
33:09Yeah, baby!
33:13Oh, f***ing no.
33:15Occy!
33:16F***ing hell.
33:18Some good craze in there, too.
33:20That's four pots.
33:22Four pots with an occy.
33:24There's nothing worse than seeing a pot torn up by an octopus.
33:27Now I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with these bloody things.
33:30When you get four pots when you haven't even pulled ten, there's just dead crows everywhere.
33:36Yeah, these octopus aren't doing us any favours, that's for sure.
33:39If they were herding craze in the pots, I'd be happy, but when there was two out of this pot that were dead dead, he's probably been injected with something. He's very, very slow.
33:48Octopus are venomous.
33:50They inject toxins from their saliva glands to neutralise prey and defend against enemies.
33:59That's been pulled, hasn't it?
34:00Yeah, he's so weak as.
34:03And any big lobsters, they will defend all the little ones.
34:07So then the big ones are always the first to go.
34:09All legs have been knocked off, tails been pulled out.
34:12Yeah, just dead prey.
34:14Hard enough to catch them.
34:16You don't want to be throwing them back because of an octopus damaging them.
34:19160s, not out of reach.
34:21However, every octopus, it's making it harder.
34:26Ah, it's f***ed up.
34:28Haven't put the end on the pile.
34:31The Buran is in trouble.
34:33Johnny has attached a buoy to the wrong piece of rope.
34:36And that might cost Jack a pot.
34:39Hopefully we can turn around, grapple the rope if it's still floating,
34:42and get it back without losing it.
34:45Why did I do throw the pot without the boys?
34:47Yeah.
34:48F***ed this must have been sitting in the basket.
34:50Okay.
34:51And I've hooked on the other one.
34:52Yeah.
34:53If we lose that pot, it could be $3,000 worth of fish that it's not catching.
34:57We're already struggling.
34:58We don't want to make it harder for ourselves.
35:01There it is.
35:05Thank Christ we've managed to find the rope.
35:07Pull it in.
35:09I'm sure Johnny's happy that we found it,
35:11because he was probably going to get growled at.
35:13Just trail this next one out for me.
35:15Yep.
35:16If I do that working for my father,
35:18he would have ripped my absolute head off.
35:20I'm a bit more patient, but I can still get crabby.
35:23Oh, good.
35:24Didn't lose a fight.
35:25Didn't lose anything.
35:26I'm a bit stressed out at the moment,
35:28financially-wise, fish-wise.
35:30Had a wedding come up at pay for.
35:32Just sort of a million things going around in my head,
35:34and I don't know if I've made the right call yet.
35:36That's another one.
35:40So far this shot, we've got four octopus in four different pots.
35:44Five sides to turn.
35:46Our target's 160.
35:47It's just getting harder and harder.
35:49At sea, the metaphoric tide can turn at any minute.
35:54This pot might have it.
35:56Yeah, that looks good.
35:59That looks real good.
36:01This is looking real nice.
36:04There's some nice-sized crows in here.
36:06Eight out of that.
36:08Jesus Christ, that's having a crack.
36:10This looks like a tenner.
36:12Got a tenner out of this pot.
36:14Out of that pot, got an eight.
36:16This shot started off with some pretty shitty pots,
36:18but we got on the certain piece of bottom I was looking for
36:21and bang, bang, bang, bang, you know, ten-eight, ten-eight.
36:24So if we can maintain these numbers, you know,
36:27160's pretty reachable, I think.
36:29And what did you get, John?
36:30What did I get?
36:31A bloody good time.
36:32Put a smile on that dial.
36:35It's crazy how much his mood is depicted
36:37by how many logs that we're catching.
36:39Being good pots can change the whole day.
36:42Isn't that right, Lamy?
36:48It's always good, you know, to go and load a few fish.
36:51You don't know what the price is going to do.
36:53If you just drop at any moment,
36:54you're going to lose a lot of money.
36:56Miles is happy with his gamble, for now.
36:59He's lost a day shot against Bryson Squizzy,
37:02but he'll be cashed up, and Timmy seems happy too.
37:06That's where the beer is,
37:09knowing that we pick up Cody
37:11and it's going to make it a lot easier on him.
37:13Cody is a young guy.
37:14He's done three trips for me before.
37:16The reason I didn't have him on the boat
37:18he sort of wasn't getting along with Tim that well.
37:20He's saving the day for us, Cody.
37:22I've literally given him no notice at all.
37:24Yeah.
37:25He's an absolute champion.
37:26Here he is. How you going, mate?
37:27One of the biggest problems you have
37:29in lobster fishing is crew management.
37:31Are you out there with me, bro?
37:32My business has got to operate,
37:34try and get back on track,
37:35and Tim's just going to have to get over it.
37:42As soon as you finish that pot,
37:44start fish downing, please.
37:45The first half of the Chieftain's day shot is top quartile.
37:49I reckon it's between 80 and 100.
37:51I reckon it's 110.
37:53110? What was your guess?
37:55What's yours?
37:56I'd like 120.
37:57120?
37:58You were 90.
37:59That was 106.
38:00106?
38:01Yep.
38:02Our target's 160.
38:03We only got 100 this morning,
38:05so if we can end up finishing the day for 260,
38:07that's still a good day, but I don't know.
38:09Are you least confident that we're going to hit the target?
38:11No, because the next lot's on a different bottom.
38:1354 lobsters is all they'll need from the second half of the shot
38:17to hit the magic 160 figure.
38:20Lockie wants to spice things up a bit.
38:23If we get the target, you have to scull that.
38:26Give it a cup of rum.
38:28The juice.
38:29You have to scull the pickle juice.
38:30Yeah.
38:31I'll do it.
38:32You'll do it?
38:33I'll do it.
38:34If we hit the target?
38:35Yeah, 160.
38:36Alright, cool.
38:37160 and he'll drink the juice.
38:38One and a half to two.
38:44Two plus.
38:45Oh, yeah.
38:47Come on, doggies.
38:48If it weighs, it pays.
38:51Squeezy's decision to stick and stay at Pedra Branca
38:54is working out after all.
38:56His numbers are lifting.
38:58Come on, Rhino.
39:00Oh!
39:01Hello!
39:02We're in, baby.
39:04We're in!
39:05Let's go!
39:06Oh, God!
39:07Oh, God!
39:12Thank you the money!
39:13Pretty good, mate.
39:15That's what we want.
39:16Woo!
39:17I'm taking a photo of that.
39:19That's not going up on social media.
39:21If Bryce and Miles saw this photo,
39:23they'll be down here in five minutes.
39:25We've got a pot of gold!
39:27Pot of gold.
39:28Finally.
39:29Have I made a mistake?
39:31Calling Miles.
39:32I don't want to share these fish.
39:34At the end of the day, I want this area to myself
39:37and I hope it stays like that.
39:39Eleven fish and that.
39:41I reckon they would have went fifteen, sixteen kilos.
39:43So, that's what we want.
39:45Yeah, baby!
39:47At the current market price,
39:49that pot of eleven big dogs
39:51could be worth at least $1,300.
39:55Lock-in Jock said if we can eat 160,
39:57I'd have to drink pickled juice.
39:59So, the pickled juice we have on the boat
40:00is pickled octopus.
40:02It's been sitting out all day in the sun.
40:04I don't want it.
40:05I'm not losing this bed, either.
40:06I'd probably end up crying, I think.
40:08We need, like, ten good pots.
40:10Well, we only need fifty-four crays for the high of sixty.
40:14I reckon we'll do it.
40:15A few good pots.
40:16That's all you need.
40:17A few good pots.
40:18This pot's been a slow pot.
40:21Lots of girls, lots of small men.
40:24We touch and go.
40:26Alright, we've got ten pots left.
40:29Yeah, we need about thirty more crays to hit the target, roughly.
40:32It's not over till the last pot's pool.
40:34That's it.
40:39The Pira is unloading its 833 lobsters at Dover.
40:44Cody, decky number two, is already getting on with it.
40:48It's going to be a fast turnaround.
40:52Cash in and motor straight back out.
40:56My gut feeling is price is going to drop,
40:58but I'm getting a few different answers
41:00from a few different processes,
41:02and there's a bit of instability in the market,
41:04especially with the smaller fish.
41:07And if you're the first boat to unload,
41:09you're generally going to get the highest price.
41:13Just don't go showing price or squeeze you that, would you?
41:16No, don't.
41:17We didn't break any records,
41:18but, you know, it's money in the bank,
41:19and at least we've secured that price, 55 bucks a kilo.
41:23Thanks, man.
41:24See you later, mate.
41:27Looking forward to the next part of the trip, sure.
41:29That was a zero.
41:32Oh, well.
41:3330.
41:34Nine.
41:35Didn't quite hit the target.
41:36Oh, no, well.
41:37Team Chieftain landed 145 lobsters for their last shot.
41:40Bryce avoids the pickle juice,
41:43but more importantly,
41:44the shot has catapulted Bryce to the top of the tally board.
41:48I wonder if we beat Squizzy for the day shot.
41:50He just doesn't know it yet.
41:52Yeah, baby.
41:53That's what we're after.
41:54Yep.
41:55Here he is, the captain.
41:56150.
41:57Woo-hoo!
41:58Payday, baby.
41:59Well done, boys.
42:00I'm happy for the crew.
42:01Yeah.
42:02Well done.
42:03Just a nice fish, weren't they?
42:04They were a good fish.
42:05They were a good fish.
42:06The fleet is all done for the day.
42:07The final numbers are in.
42:08Chieftain has aced it with 900 feet.
42:09Oh, well done.
42:10All right.
42:11We've got a good fish.
42:12We've got a good fish.
42:13We've got a good fish.
42:14We've got a good fish.
42:15Yeah, baby.
42:16That's what we're after.
42:17Yep.
42:18Oh, here he is, the captain.
42:19150.
42:20Woo-hoo!
42:21Payday, baby.
42:22Well done, boys.
42:23I'm happy for the crew.
42:24Well done.
42:25Just a nice fish, weren't they?
42:26They were a good fish.
42:27The fleet is all done for the day.
42:32The final numbers are in.
42:34Chieftain has aced it with 927 lobsters.
42:39It's the first time in two seasons that Bryce has been at the top of the tally board.
42:45The bold contender is in second place on 883 lobsters.
42:51The Pirah cashed in their 833 lobsters.
42:55And the Baran is on 448, hoping for better days ahead.
43:04Yeah, look, we cashed in.
43:05We cashed in on what we had.
43:07But, I mean, we've just missed out on 12 hours of fishing.
43:10Oh, it's just a bigger bite!
43:13It's owls.
43:15And it's great as well!
43:18It's too much!
43:21It is a gamble, and hopefully it's going to pay off for us.
43:26With that!
43:31We'll be right back!
43:35We'll be right back!
