00:00Hello and welcome to Shop Essence Live. As you can see, my name is Noni. I am Vice President
00:06of Branded Content and Video here at Essence and this is Shop Essence Live where every single week
00:13we're bringing you a new Black-owned business to shop and when I tell you we have some heavy
00:19hitters tonight that I am bringing directly to you guys, we are approaching this holiday season.
00:24Y'all ain't gotta wait until Black Friday to start filling out your Christmas list. We are
00:30going to be joined by Karen Blackwell of Conda Chocolates a little bit later. Those chocolates
00:37are amazing first of all. I had to have somebody hide them in my house because I kept eating them.
00:41Yes, I did. And then, but up first we're going to be joined by Cashmere. She is the lovely and
00:49beautiful founder of Beauty Bakery and when I tell you these products, I'm absolutely obsessed. Not
00:56only am I obsessed, my four-year-old daughter who already loves makeup is absolutely obsessed and
01:02when you shop here at Shop Essence Live, you are shopping directly with these Black-owned businesses.
01:08Let me pin my comment. Let me pin my comment so y'all know what you're coming into and then Cashmere is
01:14going to be coming in any second and we're going to get right into these products. Hold on one second.
01:19Beauty Bakery, I see. Let us get into it. Cashmere Carrillo. Come on in. Come on in. Did I lose you?
01:29Okay, let's try it again. Oh, there it is. Hey. Hey, girl. Hey. How are you? You recognize this lip?
01:37First of all. I mean, that lip is giving. And it's going nowhere, y'all. It's nowhere, nowhere.
01:44It's going nowhere. Okay, okay. Before we hop into this incredible, like when I tell y'all, it is like,
01:50it's Christmas come early. When you get your Beauty Bakery products and you're doing your own
01:54little unboxing, it's so much fun. Like you really added so much whimsicalness to just like the art
02:01of beauty in the product. So we'll get into that. But first, I want you to just give people
02:06what the cliff note journey was for you to even be at this point. You're in hundreds of stores
02:12on Shop Essence Live, a part of the New Voices family. Tell us a little bit about your journey.
02:19Oh my gosh. First off, everybody, I'm going to demo. So excuse the face. Got some quick demo that we can get in.
02:26Use the beautiful face. Thank you. Yeah, it's been really quite a journey. It started off just I was a
02:34child entrepreneur, like always pursuing different business pursuits. You know, it kind of started with
02:40those family reunions when you could ask every adult for a dollar. And so it just kind of continued on
02:48from there. And then around the age of like 14, I remember trying to pitch this idea to the board of
02:54directors of this hospital. And I was really excited about that idea. But you know, I really
02:59admire the confidence of 14 year old Kashmir, because as you go, and you don't see people
03:06clapping and you don't see this, you start to get afraid and you shouldn't keep going, like hold on to
03:13that, that confidence that the youth have. So all of this happens. And then I'm on Instagram. This was
03:20back when no one, it seemed like they were even on Instagram. And we put up this lip video,
03:26Mon Cherie. It was Mon Cherie. And a girl put it on and she smudged the mess out of her lips and the
03:35brand just took off. And from there, I had to have employees, which I was like, Oh my God, how do I
03:40even hire someone? And then, you know, we got our first few employees. And then we had an office and
03:47before long, Ulta Beauty and Target and everyone's at the door. New Voices Fund came in to support
03:53my heart. I love them a lot. And it's just been the most amazing journey overall. Like to have a dream
04:01come true. I think you'll keep dreaming because now you see that things can can go the way that
04:08you've dreamt of. So. Oh, I mean, you are so inspiring. And you didn't even get into
04:14just what you have been through personally. I see in your story, you are a breast cancer survivor.
04:21And that was a real inspiration behind even how you are so conscious about what goes into your
04:27product. Can you talk a little bit about that? Yeah. So teen mom on every government assistance
04:34you can think of. I know all of the options out there. If you can't get your bills paid this
04:38holiday season, just slide into my DM. But, um, yeah, I went through a lot and then through
04:45like my mid twenties found a lump. This was right around the time when I started thinking of beauty
04:50bakery. And I remember praying about it like, Oh, should I start this business? And I just really
04:55felt like God was telling me like, you're going into beauty. Beauty is self-centered. If you can go into
05:01beauty and think of others, then your brand will go very far. That's what he told me. And I think
05:07as I've worked, I've always thought outwardly how to make the employee experience as good as I can.
05:16I'm not, I'm not red line. I'm not essence yet, but how, what can I do within my power? How do I make
05:23the customer experience the best it can be? You know, how do I protect my dream unselfishly?
05:32Cause you can run for your goal and stop looking at any and everyone around you and care only about
05:38what benefits then, you know, are there for yourself, but that's not what this is. And that's
05:42not what y'all want. If you're pursuing something, think of, think outwardly. So. Yeah. Oh my goodness.
05:50Listen to this. Nothing but a word coming from cashmere. I do want to get right into these
05:55products. You're going to do a little bit of a demo over there. I'm going to continue to touch
05:59up my face or 10 minutes. So what's the first product that you want to show up for us today?
06:06Okay. I'm showing y'all our blending egg sponges. This is so fun. First of all,
06:12they come in three different shades. Noni has our, Stephanie has our pink and turquoise.
06:20Yes. And then this is what they look like wet to dry. So they get, they expand.
06:26That's the same one. Can you hold that up again?
06:30All right. So one cardigan thing.
06:34Why would you, uh, and a reminder for everyone, this is live. So you can ask questions. This is a
06:40live show connecting consumers straight to these black businesses. Why would one wet the sponge?
06:46That's something I'm not, I'm not put on to yet. It really like, I feel like it's all about
06:53hydration. I like to mix two shades with my foundation, but I feel like it's all about
06:57hydration. If you apply products with the dry sponge, I feel like you get that cracked dry face
07:04look. And one thing I didn't do y'all was I didn't put on any lotion. So you want to have some
07:09hydration, even if you have really sticky and you put it on and you can start to see these dark
07:20circles disappear. And the, it's so soft. It's so soft. If y'all could just drop a heart, drop a heart.
07:30If you already knew to wet your sponge. Cause I did not.
07:36I loved it. And I have a problem with creasing. That is so good. Yeah, it helps. And then I go
07:42under here and then I just blend all of this in and come up here real slow. And then another product.
07:54So this is our instant bake foundation that we're not really talking about that, but we're just,
07:59I just want to show you guys how a wet sponge and why these sponges are five star. Everybody loves
08:05them. You get six in the egg carton. So cute. So I'm doing this fast job. Y'all, if you see
08:12anything wrong, let's just act like we don't see that part. Okay. Cause I want to be mindful of the
08:18time. Then we're going into this flower. Now this, yes, please. Has gone viral.
08:24Around the world, like a million and one times. They don't play about this. They just don't.
08:30So thank you, Barbara. She's in here talking about how she loves instabake. Shout out to the retail
08:36team. You know what I mean? They do their thing at getting this product around the globe. So what I
08:42like to do is open it. There's a little security lock. You don't have to let this spill. Everybody's
08:48like, oh my, I'm spilled. Lock it. Hold on to that product. Okay. Tap some out. As y'all can see,
08:56your girl's almost out of this one. And a little secret tip is I like to use the same damp sponge.
09:06So typically I would put on some concealer, but I'm going to just show y'all. Watch how the sheen
09:11exists on this side, but not this side, even with a damp sponge, just watch. And this will
09:18lock your, um, look in for the whole day. This, everybody just loves to bake. They call
09:26it baking. Oh, we're baking. So I'm going to leave the other side wide open and I'm using
09:33cassava, the shade cassava. This is our flower setting powder and it comes in this flower
09:40bag. So now you can see it like smooth and snatched over here with same damp sponge.
09:52And are you only putting the translucent powder? Do you just use it under the eye?
09:56I like to use, so we have six shades and I like to use oat or, which is translucent or
10:03cassava, which has like a little bit of yellow tone. We have almond, depending on your skin
10:09tone, you can go however bright you want to go under your eye or however warm. Some people
10:15like to truly just conceal and want to maintain their skin tone from top to the chin. Some people
10:21like to brighten. Like me, I'm going to use cassava here, but then I have this color.
10:26Plantain. And you can see the color difference. I use this to brighten. And then I use this
10:32to bake my foundation in. And I just come around here. I get like smile lines and everything.
10:40And it's truly translucent. Like I can't see any of the white. It just blends right on in.
10:47It doesn't look ashy, which we know we don't like.
10:50We know we're not doing ashy. We're not doing ashy. Ashy got left behind.
10:56We're not. Ashy got left behind. We don't do ashy.
10:59We're everywhere. Okay. And so
11:02I'm taking it here. And I'm going to show y'all on this side of my face what it would look like
11:08if I were to bake under my eye with a color that's close to my skin tone,
11:13which is plantain. So you'll see a little brightness here, but a little warmth over here.
11:19Okay. So this was my question. I see decked out beauty. No flashbacks. You know, when you're taking
11:25a picture at night and you'd be the one with the eye flash underneath. So we got a testimony that this
11:32does not cause flashbacks, which is amazing. And decked out beauty happens to be a professional,
11:38I believe, celebrity makeup artist that picked up our products, loves them, supports our brand,
11:44and is always telling us, you know, we love to hear from the professional makeup artists
11:49as well, because they are the ones having to create a face that can last under light on camera.
11:57And this is going to protect you. You know, we get the lip whip, which I'm going to move on to.
12:01Yes.
12:02So now y'all know all about the flower and the egg.
12:05And we do have some questions coming in, Cashmere, before you move on to the lip.
12:11All right. Do you use the same damn sponge? We answered that.
12:14Conda Chocolates. Hey, y'all. We'll see y'all in a minute.
12:17Do you recommend cleaning your sponges or disposing of them? And if you clean,
12:23is there like a shelf life, I guess, to sponges or can you infinitely clean them?
12:28Yeah, we typically say like it does depend on frequency of use and how you're cleaning them.
12:35So I would say on average, I would keep a sponge up to 90 days, especially if you're using it every
12:40single day and washing it, you know, frequently. If you're, you know, using it infrequently,
12:47like once every two weeks, once a month, I would keep it, you know, for maybe a good,
12:53I guess, technically 90 uses because 90 days, it's like you're just using that thing every day.
12:58You're rinsing it out. I like to put mine into a container. I used to have this little dishwasher
13:03that I found on Amazon. I put it in there and it actually works well.
13:08It works. Okay. Good to know. Good to know. Okay. So we're going to move on to this lip when I tell
13:15you. Oh, wait. Okay. This, can you just break down how you come up with the packaging?
13:24Like, what was that brainstorming like? Cause this is just the cutest packaging and the way
13:31that you've done it. Look at her brush that y'all look at the, honestly, I just feel like,
13:36especially after going through the whole breast cancer thing and having all these health challenges,
13:41I just try and have fun. I just try and turn off that adult. That's going to talk me out of
13:47everything and turn on that, that youngster in me that would just be like, this would be so fun
13:53because putting on makeup can take like 50 minutes a day. And I think having fun tools and having
13:59things that like are bright and stuff like that, they can make that whole process like feel like
14:05fun. You know, we all go through a lot as women. And when I think about what makeup actually does,
14:13it really does uplift you after going through the breast cancer. I remember going to this gala
14:18and I put on this dress and this makeup and my hair was done and I had this, what I felt like
14:24were ugly boobs. I'm just being real with y'all. I was like, I wanted my own boobs. I wanted what I
14:29was born with. And here I am with my implants. Cause I went through a double mastectomy and I'm at
14:34this gala and the magic of just feeling beautiful again, after being in hospitals and you're being
14:41poked on and you're worried and stressing, makeup is the truth. Wow. So this, I like to use this brush,
14:50for example, this is I think called the Turner. I get the Turner and spatula mixed up. Cause look,
14:57in our household, anything shaped like this was a spatula. You use it for everything. Exactly.
15:01Everything was a spatula. So I like to use this. I take concealer and I might clean up my brows.
15:10I'll grab a little product, dip it around, and then I just go right here y'all and just clean my
15:17brow up. Just so those brows pop out.
15:21So, so dope. So yeah. And then last, but not even least, the product that put us on the map
15:34is the lip lip. So creating something that wasn't out at the time that, you know, there was no
15:45competition at the time. I like to tell people there was no Kylie. There was no, uh, Maybelline
15:52making a smudge free, nothing. It was just us. So it was really nice to be black and to feel,
16:00you know, like we had the runway. So like the slightly over line and I use the tip as y'all can
16:08see this tip to line the lip. And I might do it wrong. Cause it's light. It's a bright.
16:20This is just to avoid cracking. Just exfoliate your lips. Keep your lips hydrated.
16:26I think one thing we all underestimate is how much water we need to drink in a day.
16:31We run from meeting to meeting, from phone call to phone call, grabbing coffee and watch
16:38as you watch. You see, I'm only doing one layer.
16:42Yeah, that is pigmented.
16:46So beautiful.
16:49So actually, yep.
16:51Did I miss it? I can't see. Oh my God.
16:53I know there's a lot of comments.
16:55It's hard to see.
16:57No, it looks beautiful. This is just, and it dries so instantly, but your lips don't feel dry.
17:05So if you experience cracking, maybe you drank wine or you ate because, um, I would say Mickey,
17:12um, I would say that, um, oils do break the liquid down. So if you're eating and you having a blast,
17:19you'll probably experience, start to experience some cracking. But if you're just out having your water,
17:24doing your thing, this is going to last you the whole day until you start eating it and start,
17:30you know, doing a lot like lip liners, chapsticks, any of that underneath this will break you down.
17:35So you just want it to be your lips and the product.
17:39Really, really great. So as we wrap up, this is in partnership with the New Voices family.
17:45We do have some black female entrepreneurs that often watch Shop Essence Live on a weekly.
17:49If you can talk a little bit about what that experience has been like for you, um, what that
17:55community has provided you, uh, to this day.
18:00Yes. I would say one of the things that they provide in addition to capital, if they decide to,
18:07to stand behind what you're doing is their support. And you're getting high level executive support.
18:15Like this is probably, I would consider it the height of, of support that you can receive. So
18:22sometimes they're going to tap into their network to help you. If you have questions and things that
18:27they can't assist with, if they can assist you, they're right there. They've rolled up their sleeves.
18:32There's been times that it has felt as if they are literally sitting at the table with my team
18:37and in the trenches with us. And I can really, really appreciate that.
18:42And then you're leading board meetings. They are there. You're talking about the issues that
18:46you're seeing in the company. You're talking about challenges. As you all know, there were big
18:51global freight challenges. Like we're, we're just barely out of them. So we're having to talk about
18:56how products might be stuck out at sea and just having high level conversations, nothing to be afraid
19:02of things that you will learn when you have that type of support. Oh, so good. And you've given us so
19:09many words of encouragement, new voices. So been so inspirational this whole entire time. Remember
19:16guys, if you're watching live, if you're watching on the replay, if you are buying these products,
19:21you're buying them direct from beauty bakery makeup. So make sure that you support. I see a lot of things
19:27going into wishlist. Let's turn the wishlist into purchases. Right. So up next, we are going to come
19:35right back with Karen of Conda chocolates. And when I tell you these chocolates are addictive,
19:41but amazing. And hear that beautiful story. Cashmere. I just like sky's the limit for you.
19:48We all see it. We all know it. Go to her page and shop the full catalog. We only talked about a very
19:54small portion of it just now. So just go on over. You shop these products here. You can go to her page
20:00and shop even more. Thank you guys so much for tuning in. And I will be right back. Thank you,
20:05Cashmere. Thank you. Bye. Thank you.
