00:29I'm Seha Murdani. This is Healthy 60.
00:59Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm and India is no exception.
01:14With growing awareness about skin health and a desire for natural, effective product, more and more Indians are turning to K-beauty for their daily regimen.
01:23In this report, we explore what's driving this trend, how it fits into Indian skincare habits and why Korean skincare is quickly becoming a favorite across the country.
01:34Do you wish for that dewy dumpling look?
01:44Glass skin that shines even when there is no spotlight on it.
01:47The glazed donut look.
01:49Welcome to the world of Korean skincare.
01:53Skincare advice which is everywhere.
01:56The internet is flooded with tricks and ways to achieve that glass skin.
02:00So, what is it?
02:03Well, Korean skincare refers to a skincare philosophy, an aesthetic form from Korea that emphasizes healthy skin first, then beauty.
02:14Multi-step routines, hydration, gentle ingredients, bright glowy skin, features like sheet masks, essences, sunscreen, lightweight moisturizers and barrier repairing ingredients are important.
02:29Dr. Niharika Goel, dermatologist, is with us.
02:34You know, I want to ask you the popularity of these Korean skin products.
02:39First of all, the Indian skin is very unique.
02:42So, is this for us?
02:43As I always say to my patients also, that Korean skincare is mainly for Korean skin and Indian skincare is for Indian skin.
02:50So, it is overhyped.
02:51Overhyped, yes, it can be used in patients who do have a very dry and sensitive skin.
02:56But just follow your dermatologist's instructions that Indian skin means Indian skincare, not the Korean skincare.
03:02You know, what do you have to say about this kind of rage that we are seeing?
03:06As we see nowadays, the influencer market is at rage.
03:09The social media, a lot of people are using social media.
03:12The marketing strategies have changed.
03:14So, if you see all the influencers are promoting a lot of Korean skincare, Korean skin clinics and there's a marketing about it.
03:21So, that is why there are a lot of rage is there because what you see is what you follow.
03:25You know, tell us a little about Korean skincare.
03:27What really sets it apart from other types of skin treatment?
03:30So, if we talk about Korean skincare, it is mainly based around moisturized hydration.
03:35So, that is why the skin looks very dewy, very glassy, shiny.
03:40So, there's a multi-step thing that involves mainly moisturizing and hydrating.
03:44So, it can involve toner and moisturizers.
03:47So, mainly the Korean ingredients have snail mucin, they have peptides, they have centella,
03:53which have more of anti-inflammatory and soothing properties and hydrating properties.
03:58The global K-beauty products market was valued around US$14.69 billion in the year 2024.
04:06It is expected to be more than doubling to roughly US$31.82 billion by 2033.
04:14The forecast of CAGR, which is compound annual growth rate, is about 8.9% for 2025-2033.
04:22K-beauty has shifted from being niche to mainstream.
04:26There are now 60 plus Korean beauty brands in India.
04:30K-beauty category in India is growing at 75% year over year.
04:35Brands like Innisfree Report, 40-50% growth annually in the country.
04:42What is the kind of future that you see, Ms. Anand, for this market for Korean products in India particularly?
04:47I think the market will continue to grow and expand, given that typically beauty and personal care as a segment is discretionary spend,
04:55which typically increases with an increase in per capita income.
04:59And therefore, if you look at both the middle-income households, which are 3 lakh to 30 lakh,
05:03and the top income, which is 30 lakh and above, both these categories are growing.
05:08And therefore, you expect about 100 million households to be added into these two categories, right, over the next few years.
05:15And therefore, by 2030, again, you can expect healthy demand.
05:19Also, given the travel that's happening with Gen Zs, they really like to travel to new places.
05:25And therefore, some of this will also impact the conversion from local domestic personal care products
05:33to a more global way of consuming personal and beauty care, right?
05:38And therefore, it will continue to grow on healthy double digits over the next few years, up to 2030.
05:45Here's what one should keep in mind before using these products.
05:50Not every product works for every skin type.
05:53What works in Korea, in its climate and for its population, may not translate perfectly elsewhere.
06:00Texture, sensitivity, climate, pigmentation, all of that matters.
06:05What are the other things that you like to tell the average patient, you know, the consumer?
06:09Minimalism is what you should follow.
06:11You should see your skin type, then only you should follow a routine.
06:15A basic skincare routine consists of a cleanser according to your skin type,
06:18a good sun skin according to your skin type,
06:21and a night serum based on your requirement,
06:24whether you have like anti-aging requirements, you have pigmentation, you have acne-prone skin.
06:28So, it should be based around that.
06:31So, a basic consumer, while you're buying a lot of products,
06:35there are a lot of websites that are marketing a lot of products,
06:38and you're buying ingredients, seeing on what concern you have.
06:41So, don't buy multiple products.
06:42Go for one product at one time.
06:44Do not combine a lot of products, like don't use vitamin C and retinol at the same time.
06:48Don't use AHA, BHAs along with retinol,
06:51because they can impair your skin barrier and can lead to worsening of skin conditions.
06:55Possibility of overbuying, overusing skincare,
07:01too many products, routines become difficult to maintain without visible benefit.
07:07And then there is a risk of inflated expectations via social media.
07:14What to expect, doctor, and what not to expect in terms of
07:18the kind of unrealistic expectations that, you know, people really set up?
07:22So, when we talk about expectations,
07:24so what you see on social media is not always what the actuality is,
07:29or what the truth is,
07:30because people are using a lot of filters.
07:33So, the expectation should not be according to what you see on the social media.
07:37You should go by advice of your doctor,
07:39what they guide you,
07:41because they are the over-the-counter products.
07:43The results will be not as a product should give or what you are expecting.
07:48So, a combined approach,
07:50when a dermatologist gives you a product which has multiple ingredients,
07:53which are the active ingredients,
07:54will give you the right results and they will guide you about it.
07:57Alright, I'm going to leave with that.
07:59Thank you, doctor, for sharing your inputs with us.
08:01In recent years, though, prejuvenation has gained popularity,
08:04especially among the younger populations,
08:07who are increasingly obsessed with maintaining a youthful appearance.
08:11This obsession is largely influenced by social media,
08:14cultural beauty standards,
08:16and the accessibility of minimally invasive treatments like
08:19fillers, Botox,
08:20and advanced skincare products.
08:26From sheet marks to serums to injectables,
08:30the obsession with looking younger for longer
08:32is not just an adult concern.
08:36Teenagers and young adults are now diving
08:38into what's being called prejuvenation,
08:42the idea of preventing aging before it even begins.
08:47Scroll through social media and you'll find teenagers
08:50as young as 13,
08:52slathering on retinol,
08:53experimenting with chemical fields,
08:56or saving up for Botox.
08:58It's all in the name of prejuvenation.
09:01The trend of using anti-aging products
09:03much before signs of aging actually show up.
09:08Dermatologists say they're seeing more and more
09:10of these young patients
09:12asking for treatments designed for people
09:15in their 30s or 40s.
09:18Literally younger people getting Botox
09:20done as preemptive procedures.
09:22How common is this nowadays?
09:24So basically big companies have spent
09:27millions of dollars marketing to preteens.
09:29This didn't happen on its own.
09:31Many companies have chosen
09:32to develop marketing campaigns
09:35towards a specific group of people
09:37and they're easy to market to.
09:40They don't have development
09:41of how to understand marketing versus reality.
09:45they're young and they're susceptible to messaging.
09:47So they're a specific clientele
09:50that is being targeted.
09:52Retinol Botox fillers.
09:53Well, these are strong interventions.
09:56Possibly okay when you're 40 plus
09:58or you urgently need them
10:00when you're younger.
10:02When used early,
10:04when it is not needed,
10:06can do more damage than help us.
10:09Here's how.
10:09Younger skin,
10:11skin that's preteen,
10:12skin that's, you know,
10:13fresh,
10:14it's more sensitive.
10:15It absorbs things more.
10:17So you have to be really careful.
10:19If you have acne
10:19and you need a topical retinoid,
10:21that's a different situation.
10:23But using things for,
10:25let's say,
10:26elective fears
10:27that are not medically proven,
10:30that is concerning.
10:32Experts point to the pressure
10:34of Instagram filters.
10:36K-drama,
10:37glass-skinned looks,
10:38K-pop idols
10:38setting impossible beauty standards.
10:41Add to that,
10:41an industry worth billions of dollars
10:43and young people
10:45are caught really in a cycle
10:46of buying and worrying about aging
10:49before their 20s are even over.
10:52You know,
10:52what role do you think
10:53that social media plays
10:55in influencing these decisions
10:56on younger population?
10:58You see grown-ups,
10:59you see your favorite celebrities
11:00from all over the world
11:02endorsing skincare,
11:03endorsing treatments,
11:04and you're thinking,
11:05hey, I should also do it too.
11:07And because it's social media
11:08and you see all of your friends like it,
11:10it's word of mouth times a million.
11:13It is so much more powerful
11:15than just reading it in a magazine
11:17or just one friend telling you.
11:19This is like a million of your friends
11:21told you to do the same thing.
11:23So your mind feels
11:24that a million people
11:25told me to do this.
11:26You know,
11:42also I want to ask you,
11:43prejuvenation in that sense
11:44is not problematic,
11:46but the problem is
11:48people are not doing it
11:49at the right time.
11:49So if you live
11:51in a harsh condition,
11:52bad weather,
11:53lots of obstruction,
11:55a lot of pollution,
11:56certain gentle things
11:57make sense at certain ages.
11:59But when you're 12,
12:00honestly,
12:00very little is required
12:01except for a good sunblock
12:03and moisturization.
12:03So is prejuvenation prevention
12:06with rejuvenation
12:08such a bad thing after all?
12:10Well, it isn't really
12:11when done right
12:12and at the right time.
12:14If done wisely,
12:16it could be a smart investment
12:17for your skin
12:18once you understand
12:19that prejuvenation
12:20is actually not just only skin deep.
12:23It's got more to do
12:24with eating right,
12:25exercising and doing the basics
12:27for your skin,
12:28for your health
12:29that will end up
12:30reflecting on your skin.
12:32You've got your prejuvenation goals
12:34in place
12:35when you understand
12:37these basics.
12:38Do remember,
12:39aging, however,
12:41is natural
12:41and sometimes
12:43the best way to look young
12:44is simply to stop
12:46worrying about
12:47growing old
12:48too soon.
12:50Cancer is often associated
12:51with noticeable symptoms
12:53such as lumps,
12:54pain or visible changes
12:55in the body.
12:56Many cancers
12:57can initially develop
12:58with silent symptoms,
13:01subtle or
13:01overlooked signs
13:03that do not
13:03immediately raise an alarm.
13:06These silent symptoms
13:06may appear mild
13:07or non-specific,
13:09making early detection
13:10challenging.
13:11Because early diagnosis
13:13is critical
13:13for effective treatment
13:14and better outcomes,
13:16recognizing these
13:17quiet warning signs
13:18is essential.
13:19it's one of the biggest
13:32health challenges
13:33of our time,
13:34cancer.
13:35And while some forms
13:37come with loud,
13:38unmistakable symptoms,
13:40others whisper.
13:41cancer doesn't always
13:48come with pain,
13:48lumps or dramatic
13:49weight loss.
13:51In many cases,
13:52it creeps in
13:53quietly.
13:54Dr. Mandeep Singh Malhotra
14:02oncologist is with us.
14:04Doctor,
14:04people often ignore
14:05small signs,
14:07fatigue,
14:08changes in bowel habits,
14:09a persistent cough.
14:10You know,
14:10these might just
14:11seem harmless,
14:13but they can actually
14:13be early warning signs
14:15of cancer,
14:15isn't it?
14:16For a basic dictum
14:18which we follow,
14:19for any subtle signs
14:20like persistent
14:21coughs,
14:23change in bowel habits
14:24or there is a fatigue
14:25which is not getting
14:26better.
14:27So,
14:27something which is
14:28not getting better
14:29needs to be
14:30investigated.
14:31Or if there is a
14:32cough which is
14:32not getting better
14:33and we have been
14:35treating it with
14:36endivitex,
14:37we have been
14:37treating it with
14:38other things
14:38but it's not
14:39getting better,
14:40we need to
14:40investigate whether
14:41it's cancer or
14:42cough.
14:42So,
14:43it's not that
14:43that any cough
14:45will be
14:46cancer?
14:47But yes,
14:48if that is
14:49not getting better
14:50on the standard
14:52conservative minds
14:53of treatment,
14:54it should be
14:55thought of cancer.
14:59Well,
15:00there are other
15:01signs as well.
15:03Recurring low-grade
15:04fevers,
15:05excessive night sweats
15:06or repeated
15:07infections might
15:09suggest issues
15:10with the immune
15:11system such as
15:12leukemia or
15:13lymphoma.
15:13lymphoma.
15:15Ongoing constipation,
15:17diarrhea,
15:18blood in the
15:19stool or pain
15:19during urination
15:20can be early
15:21signs of colon,
15:23bladder or
15:23prostate cancer.
15:27Feeling extremely
15:28tired in spite of
15:29getting enough rest
15:30may signal underlying
15:32cancers such as
15:33leukemia or
15:34lymphoma.
15:35If fatigue
15:36interferes with
15:37daily life,
15:38don't ignore it.
15:39unexplained bruising
15:42is a subtle sign
15:43as well.
15:48You know,
15:48doctor,
15:49talk to us
15:49about a bruise
15:50for example.
15:51What does a bruise
15:52really indicate?
15:53Some people get
15:54bruised very easily.
15:55Is it true that
15:55bruise and you
15:56did mention extreme
15:57fatigue also show
15:58that there could be
15:59signs of cancer,
16:00extremely subtle?
16:01Like if we are
16:03having multiple
16:04bruises or my
16:06tendency to get
16:07bruises higher,
16:08it means that
16:09I have either
16:11there is certain
16:12blood disorder,
16:13either my
16:14platelets,
16:17the cells which
16:17heal the bruise
16:18or the vessel wall
16:19which is not
16:21right,
16:22something which is
16:23not right with
16:24that.
16:25So yes,
16:26it's not that I'm
16:27saying that it
16:27can be cancer.
16:31Chronic pain
16:33that doesn't go
16:34away in the
16:35abdomen,
16:35back or bones
16:36can be a sign
16:37of cancer in the
16:38pancreas,
16:39ovaries or bones.
16:42Heartburn,
16:43acid reflux,
16:44trouble swallowing
16:45may signal cancer
16:46in the esophagus,
16:48throat or stomach.
16:52Have you not
16:53really heard this
16:54before,
16:55you know,
16:55that listening to
16:56your body gives
16:56you the clues?
16:57Early warnings
16:58that something
16:59isn't right.
17:00In many of us
17:01choose to ignore
17:02those signs.
17:03Whether it's a
17:04persistent headache,
17:05fatigue or
17:05unexplained pain,
17:06we push through
17:07it,
17:08normalize discomfort
17:09and delay
17:10medical attention.
17:12But just why?
17:13Because we've been
17:14taught that
17:15complaining is
17:15weakness and
17:16when you listen
17:17to your body,
17:18when it whispers,
17:19you won't have
17:20to listen to it
17:21when it screams.
17:23A man lost
17:24his wife and
17:25child because
17:26the woman in
17:26question here
17:27was taught and
17:28conditioned not
17:29to complain about
17:30her health problems.
17:31Constant aches
17:32around her stomach
17:33was a problem.
17:34She was battling
17:35this issue.
17:37She ended up
17:37dying because
17:38of preeclampsia,
17:40a dangerous
17:41condition in
17:42pregnancy.
17:43What does this
17:44teach us?
17:45Have we not
17:46really heard about
17:46this very,
17:47very often?
17:47That listening
17:48to your body
17:49will give you
17:50enough clues
17:50about your health.
17:52And why is that
17:53we choose to
17:53look the other way?
17:55It is often said
17:55that when you
17:56listen to your body,
17:57when it whispers,
17:59you won't have
17:59to listen to it
18:00when it screams.
18:02Well, if you are
18:03ignoring those
18:04aches and pains,
18:05his every reason
18:06why you should
18:07listen.
18:08Dr. Pushkar Anand
18:09Singh is now
18:10with us.
18:10Thank you for
18:11your time.
18:11You know,
18:11doctor,
18:12talk to us
18:12about the
18:13importance of
18:14regular health
18:14checkups,
18:15the importance
18:16of catching
18:17disease or any
18:18problem early on.
18:19So, we don't
18:20value health
18:21till sickness
18:22doesn't arrive.
18:23So, it's very
18:23important to have
18:24regular checkups
18:25so that we can
18:26avoid, you know,
18:27any kind of
18:28complication or
18:29any kind of
18:30unnecessary suffering
18:31that we have to
18:32undergo.
18:33So, and most
18:34importantly, if you
18:35have to nip a
18:36disease in the bud,
18:37it's important to
18:38early diagnose it
18:39and to start an
18:40early treatment.
18:41So, I think
18:42regular checkups
18:43are at most
18:45important and
18:46they also give you
18:47a holistic picture
18:48of your current
18:48health status,
18:49as in you know
18:50where you stand.
18:53Let's face it,
18:54one of the least
18:55addressed problems
18:56is stomach ache.
18:57Don't we get it
18:58all the time?
18:59Well, our first
19:00thought really is
19:01it could be normal,
19:03just acidity,
19:04or periods around
19:05the corner.
19:06But this has to
19:07be said.
19:08Regular stomach
19:09aches signal
19:10that all is not
19:11well.
19:12So, primarily
19:13when a patient
19:14comes to us,
19:15it's important for
19:15us to know that
19:16what is the kind
19:17of pain that
19:18she's experiencing,
19:19what's the intensity
19:20of the pain,
19:20what is the site
19:21of the pain,
19:22if the pain is
19:23radiating,
19:23if it is associated
19:24with the knee
19:24triggering factor.
19:26So, these things
19:26are important.
19:28And once we
19:29have a clear
19:30history of the
19:31patient,
19:32there are quite
19:33a few common
19:35causes for
19:35abdominal pain
19:37in females.
19:37For example,
19:38they may have
19:38gallstones,
19:39they may have
19:39kidney stones,
19:41they may have
19:42gastritis,
19:44they may have
19:45large ovarian
19:48cysts,
19:48or maybe
19:49pelvic and
19:49injury disease.
19:50So, the
19:51causes,
19:52depending upon
19:53her history,
19:55we ask them
19:55to get
19:56investigated.
19:57So, the
19:57causes,
19:58depending upon
19:59her history,
20:00we ask them
20:01to get
20:01investigated.
20:03And to
20:03answer your
20:04last part as
20:05to how to
20:05be avoided,
20:06the only way
20:07to avoid it
20:07is to have
20:08your regular
20:08health checkups
20:09and to
20:10identify the
20:11disease early.
20:11Well, here
20:14are the
20:14most common
20:15overlooked
20:16conditions
20:16behind
20:17stomach
20:17ache.
20:18Gallstones,
20:19common in
20:20women due
20:20to hormonal
20:21influences,
20:21obesity and
20:22dietary factors,
20:23can cause
20:24pain in the
20:24upper right
20:25abdomen,
20:26often after
20:26fatty needs.
20:29Appendicitis,
20:30that can mimic
20:30menstrual cramps
20:32or general
20:33stomach ache in
20:33women,
20:34leading to
20:35misdiagnosis
20:35or delayed
20:36treatment.
20:37A ruptured
20:38appendix is a
20:39life-threatening
20:39emergency.
20:41Doctor, as
20:42far as
20:42appendicitis
20:43is concerned,
20:44very often
20:45we've seen
20:46that it
20:46ruptures in
20:47patients.
20:48Appendix would
20:48rupture.
20:49Where should
20:50actually one
20:51expect the
20:51pain to
20:52occur if
20:52that is a
20:53problem?
20:54Appendicitis
20:54ruptures at
20:55a very late
20:55stage.
20:56The patient
20:57usually gets
20:5824 to 48
20:59hours before
21:00the appendix
21:01ruptures.
21:02So the
21:02patient starts
21:03experiencing
21:03pain.
21:04Now once you
21:05start experiencing
21:05pain, it is
21:06important to go
21:07to a hospital
21:08instead of
21:08taking painkillers
21:09and trying to
21:10treat it at
21:11home.
21:11So if the
21:12diagnosis is
21:13made early, the
21:14surgery or the
21:15treatment becomes
21:16very uncomplicated
21:17and simple.
21:18But if you
21:18prolong it to the
21:19extent that the
21:20appendix ruptures,
21:21then things become
21:21bad or it may
21:22even come fatal.
21:24The gynecological
21:26endometriosis often
21:27presents a severe
21:28lower abdominal pain
21:30and is confused with
21:31gastrointestinal issues.
21:34It requires careful
21:35evaluation and
21:36sometimes surgical
21:38intervention.
21:39many women
21:41ignore bloating
21:42or dull pelvic
21:43pain, assuming
21:44it is related to
21:45their cycle.
21:47These are large
21:47cysts that can
21:48twist and require
21:50urgent surgery.
21:53You know,
21:54doctor, you did
21:54mention ovarian
21:55cysts and that
21:56also is very
21:57common, often
21:58seen in women
21:59even in very
22:00younger
22:00reproductive ages.
22:02Talk to us
22:02about how common
22:03this is becoming
22:04nowadays and the
22:05kind of pain
22:05associated with
22:07that issue.
22:07snail ovarian
22:10cysts are very
22:10common and
22:12they can be
22:14various for
22:15functional or
22:16simple ovarian
22:17cysts.
22:18We do not
22:18really require any
22:20treatment.
22:20It is just
22:21observation and
22:22you should take
22:24advice from the
22:25gynecologist.
22:26However, for
22:26complicated cysts
22:28like demoid
22:29cysts or for
22:30endometrioma, if
22:31it is causing
22:32significant symptoms,
22:33then surgery or
22:35prolonged
22:36conservative
22:36treatment is the
22:37way to go.
22:39Women often
22:39overlook groin
22:40or abdominal
22:41bulges, assuming
22:42that to be
22:42weight gain.
22:44Untreated hernias
22:45can lead to
22:45obstruction or
22:47strangulation, both
22:48surgical emergencies.
22:51You know,
22:51doctor, I also
22:52want to ask you,
22:52hernia usually
22:53perceived as a
22:54man's disease but
22:55seen in women as
22:56well.
22:57You know, a lot
22:57of awareness is
22:58required regarding
22:59that, isn't it?
23:01Groin hernias are
23:02common in men.
23:02In females, we
23:04mostly have
23:06incidence of
23:07umbilical hernia
23:07that is a small
23:09outpouching around
23:10the belly button
23:11and we have
23:12incisional hernia.
23:13Sometimes female
23:14undergo multiple
23:15surgeries, a
23:16couple of LSCS, a
23:17couple of more
23:17surgeries for some
23:18other reason.
23:19So in that case
23:20that there's a
23:21potential site of
23:22weakness that is
23:23created in the
23:23abdomen and that
23:24leads to outpouching.
23:26So yes, hernia is
23:27common but mostly
23:29umbilical hernia and
23:30incisional hernia are
23:31more common in
23:32females.
23:32A word of
23:34advice from
23:35doctors on
23:35painkillers and
23:37their incessant
23:38use.
23:40You know, it's
23:40the use of
23:41painkillers among
23:43us Indians.
23:44You know, we are
23:44suppressing our
23:45pain.
23:46Of course, using
23:47it for relief is
23:47something but, you
23:49know, taking it
23:50constantly day after
23:51day is something
23:51else altogether.
23:53Talk to us about
23:53the big problem of
23:54unnecessary use of
23:55painkillers and
23:56then the range of
23:57problems that would
23:58bring, doctor.
23:59A painkiller is
24:00nothing but it's
24:01only suppressing the
24:02symptom, symptom that
24:03is pain.
24:04It is not taking
24:04care of the root
24:05cause of the
24:05disease.
24:06So it's important to
24:07understand that
24:08painkiller will never
24:09solve the issue.
24:10It will only give you
24:11symptomatic relief for a
24:12short duration of
24:13time.
24:14And yes, painkillers do
24:15come with a few,
24:17quite a few side
24:17effects.
24:18Prolonged use may
24:19cause gastritis,
24:21nausea, vomiting.
24:22Some patients even
24:23complain of constipation
24:24after taking painkillers.
24:28Sometimes prolonged use
24:29of painkillers may
24:30lead to impaired
24:32kidney function.
24:34So yes, they do come
24:35with side effects.
24:35Here's when you should call
24:37the doctor.
24:38Severe pain that does not
24:40subside with rest.
24:41Pain associated with
24:42vomiting, fever or
24:44bloating.
24:44Persistent changes in
24:46digestion or bowel
24:46habits.
24:47Pain that worsens after
24:49eating.
24:49Pain interfering with
24:51daily activities.
