The young stars of the “Power” sequel series discuss filling big shoes while creating characters of their own
Transcript
00:00There's just certain boundaries you don't cross.
00:03What if it is to protect yourself?
00:05Don't talk to anyone.
00:06I do whatever I need to do to make sure this family and this business don't fall.
00:13Hi, I'm Revae Ruff from Essence.
00:15How's everyone doing this afternoon?
00:17We're great. How are you?
00:18Hey, man.
00:20How you doing?
00:20Doing great.
00:21Doing good, doing good.
00:23Thanks for your time.
00:24So Power, the original show, became a cultural phenomenon,
00:29and now you guys are here with the new edition.
00:32Of course, the first season with the smash hit as well.
00:35But you guys are kind of filling the shoes as like the new ghost Tommy and Tasha, in a sense.
00:40How does it feel to kind of take on that mantle for the next chapter?
00:47Man, it feels great.
00:49Just being able to have people just tuning in and really taking us serious
00:55and really spending their time watching us.
00:58And it's dope because at first, like, I was nervous.
01:01It was a lot of pressure.
01:04I got the news about, you know, this being the thing.
01:07It was a lot of pressure.
01:08So just, you know, just now, just going from that to now,
01:11and everyone's, you know, enjoying us and looking forward to season two.
01:15It's just dope.
01:15It's a great feeling.
01:16Yeah, I think it's a lot of fun to see us, you know, kind of carve our own way as well,
01:20where we're turning it into our own thing.
01:23You know, it's not like, oh, it's all these similarities.
01:29Yeah, there are, but we're definitely turning it into our, we're making it our own.
01:32And, you know, I love the way it's going.
01:35So I just, it's surreal for me.
01:37It's surreal for me.
01:38I'm literally living the dream every day.
01:40It's so much fun to be a part of something so huge.
01:43Awesome.
01:44Now, Michael, you specifically kind of had a hump to get over because as people have seen you acting in the role of Tariq from such a young age,
01:52you kind of were not as favored by the fans on your previous show.
01:57But you've been able, with your skills and your acting, to take it to a new level and kind of become everyone's favorite.
02:04Now everyone's rooting for you.
02:05How does it feel to be able to kind of flip the ties on how your character is seen?
02:09It's dope, because like I said, it was a lot of pressure.
02:12I was a little nervous.
02:13But, you know, like once I got into it and got closer to, you know, the first day of us filming,
02:18and I've seen a lot of like, you know, like the old faces from the original cast.
02:23I mean, not cast, the crew.
02:24So, you know, just being able to see, you know, some of the old family members, you know, just familiar faces.
02:29And then having such an amazing cast like this, you know, everyone just messed so well together so fast.
02:34You know, it made everything so much easier and so much more fun to, you know, to work on.
02:38And we had fun, you know, and we're going to continue to have fun.
02:42So, yeah, it's dope.
02:43Yeah, Mike, I think you worked with like one person your age, like for five years.
02:47Yeah.
02:50So now, you know, just being a part of this is dope.
02:52But especially, you know, getting the chance to, you know, make the fans do a 180
02:57and kind of be on Tariq's side a little bit, it's dope.
03:00It's dope.
03:00It's the writers team that did their thing.
03:06Now, being that you guys are acting with so many industry veterans and legends like Mary J. Blige,
03:11Method Man, Lorenz Tate,
03:13are you all looking to them for advice on how to move in your roles and furthering your career?
03:19It's always been a matter of, you know, especially the veteran presence on set.
03:24Because not even just the roles and the show, we talk about a lot of different things as far as life goes.
03:31Being just in the business, entertainment business as a whole.
03:34So we always get a lot of, you know, a lot of good knowledge from them.
03:38And it's a blessing being able to be around me, especially Lorenz.
03:41That's my guy right there.
03:42He's always pulling me to the side.
03:44And he's always giving me inspiration.
03:46So excited to get me.
03:48And Method, too.
03:49Method's been in, you know, obviously everyone knows him as this musical icon.
03:53But he's been in so much TV, so much film, like movies that I love, independent films.
04:00And I just, I pick his brain every time I see him.
04:04I just can't believe everything he's done in this industry.
04:07And he just is the most humble dude ever.
04:09He's just such a normal guy.
04:12So I really do love him.
04:13I'm with him.
04:15The man.
04:16So much stories and stuff.
04:18Like he has so much knowledge.
04:19Yeah.
04:20Yeah.
04:20But I'm bigger than him.
04:27But I'm bigger than him.
04:30Well, thank you all so much for your time today.
04:34Of course.
04:35Thank you so much.
04:36Thank you for having us.
04:38Enjoy the rest of your day.
04:39You too.
