00:00Hey everyone, I'm Blake Newby, beauty and style editor for Essence here with Aveeno's
00:11principal scientist and brand ambassador, Sabrina Henry, and Aveeno's dermatologist
00:16partner, Dr. Camille Howard-Verevich, to get the details on how to choose the right
00:20skin ingredients for that healthy, glowing complexion, especially ahead of summer.
00:24And it's all in partnership with our friends at Aveeno.
00:27We're gonna get to know our skin on the microbiological level, learn some of the most common skin ailments
00:32and how to treat them, and of course, get to know the ingredients that not only fight back
00:37against skin issues, but will leave your skin feeling healthy and radiant.
00:41Thank you, ladies, so, so much for joining me.
00:44So happy to talk to you, even if it's not in person.
00:47Well, thanks for having us.
00:48Yeah, thanks for having me.
00:49And I will dive right in because we are ready to talk about skin.
00:53So for you, Sabrina, how do we get that glow?
00:56How do we know that our skin is healthy and in good shape?
00:59You know, Blake, that's an awesome question.
01:01So the way that you keep your skin looking healthy and feeling healthy, it comes down
01:05to the state of your skin's moisture barrier, right?
01:08The moisture barrier is scientifically referred to as a stratum cornea, and it provides a critical
01:13protection to your skin, right?
01:14It's your first line of defense.
01:16If you want to think about it, it keeps all the good things in that we want to keep in
01:20and all the things that are bad out.
01:22And with that, so if you have healthy skin, you know, your skin will look preserved.
01:28And if it's unhealthy, it'll be intact and it'll be compromised, right?
01:32So you may have signs of itchy, dry skin, signs of hyperpigmentation that leads to tone and
01:38texture differences.
01:40So those are some of the ways that you can identify if you have healthy and unhealthy skin.
01:44It all begins with the skin moisture barrier.
01:46And let's say that our skin is in really bad shape, right?
01:49And the skin barrier is not where it needs to be.
01:51Sabrina, what can we do to improve it and to get that glow back?
01:57You know, another great question, Blake.
01:58So when you think about some of the factors that lead us to unhealthy skin, let's think
02:03about the factors.
02:04So there's both internal and external factors.
02:06So when we think about internal, think about sensorial, your body sending you signals
02:11psychologically, we've had a crazy year, right?
02:14So those things, those emotions, even what's going on inside can have an impact on how our
02:19skin is.
02:20And then externally, when you think about the environment we live in, if we're exposed to
02:23pollution, humidity, it's getting warmer, right?
02:26On the East Coast and around the world, air conditioning systems, even, you know, natural
02:31sunlight that we get outside.
02:33But even aside from that, honestly, Dr. Howard, you may see this point, use of products, right?
02:39Different types of products and the misuse of products by consumers, special diets that
02:45people may or may not have can also lead to factors that can compromise the health of
02:50your skin.
02:51And Dr. Howard, kind of shifting over to you, a bad skin barrier can cause a lot of extra
02:57problems, some that are very, very common.
02:59Can you talk about some of those common issues that come with the...
03:02Yeah, totally, totally, totally.
03:04You know, what's funny is, or what's actually something I think I see in the office frequently
03:09is that we tend to be the cause of, you know, irritating our own skin by doing the absolute
03:15most.
03:16One of the things that I tend to see in the office is that we're using too many products
03:21all at one time.
03:22Often those products have, you know, hydroxy acids all at one time.
03:25And that can cause hyperpigmentation eventually.
03:29The things like scaling, itching, redness, those are some things that I, you know, you
03:34can see at home and that I hear in the office that leads to hyperpigmentation.
03:40Another thing that I tend to see as well is eczema.
03:44You know, you have those itchy patches all over your skin sometimes.
03:47And the more you scratch, the more there's inflammation, the more there's inflammation, the
03:51more likely you are to have hyperpigmentation.
03:54And are there any triggers that might cause hyperpigmentation or eczema to flare up?
04:01We hear about it all the time.
04:02You know, eczema, we're able to keep it at bay.
04:05Hyperpigmentation, we're able to keep it at bay.
04:07And then one thing will send it over the edge.
04:10Right.
04:10So like, you know, definitely trauma.
04:13And when we hear the word trauma, we think of like ER and we think of like, you know,
04:16doctors like rushing to our bay.
04:20And that's what we're trying to think about, right?
04:23But no, I think of trauma in dermatology.
04:26I think of like us with our fingers, you know, scratching.
04:29I think of those brushes sometimes, you know, a little bit too much.
04:34Those are definitely forms of trauma.
04:36And trauma always leads to that inflammation.
04:38And inflammation definitely is the culprit when it comes to leading to hyperpigmentation.
04:43And why is it especially for more melanated skin?
04:48How do we index higher on the scale of those two conditions?
04:52Well, we tend to have that hyperpigmentation that is persistent.
04:56It just won't go away.
04:58You know, once that little mosquito bite that you got at the picnic a long time ago, you know,
05:03you know, you're like, oh, that mosquito got me.
05:05And then you get home and you're like, I'm just going to go away.
05:09And then a week later, you see that brown spot forming.
05:12And then like the next year, you see the brown spot from the mosquito bite, you know.
05:15Still there.
05:17I think I have a flip here.
05:18I'm like, if I look enough, I have some for sure.
05:22Absolutely.
05:22Absolutely.
05:23So the more we traumatize our skin, the more we have irritation, you know, with melanated skin,
05:27we can tend to have that persistent pigmentation.
05:30And it's so interesting because like you said, we tend to index higher,
05:34but it's harder to diagnose certain skin conditions on our skin.
05:37So can you kind of further expound on why that is?
05:42Absolutely.
05:43So one of the things in dermatology, especially with skin of color,
05:46is that, you know, we present a little differently.
05:49Like, you know, when we think about how a rash looks, we talk about color.
05:55We talk about morphology, all those different things.
05:59Now, with deeper skin tones, you may not have the color you learned about in residency there.
06:05So, you know, in deeper complected skin tones, we lean on other things.
06:10So sometimes it may be a little bit harder to diagnose certain conditions just because we may not be able to see that color as much.
06:18And is there a way to self-diagnose?
06:21Like, are there some symptoms that I can look out for both with hyperpigmentation and eczema to self-diagnose maybe myself with the condition?
06:29So, you know, when I think about self-diagnosis and what I'm diagnosing, I'm always like, you know,
06:35because one of the misconceptions is you have to wait until you get to a certain point to show up at your doctor's office,
06:41especially your dermatologist's office.
06:44And I want to, like, move away from that.
06:46And if there's something that's bothering you on your skin, definitely seek us out.
06:50We are here.
06:51We're here to help.
06:52Think of your dermatologist just like you think of your primary care doctor.
06:55Like, you should be going to your dermatologist every year for a skin exam.
06:59One of the things that I really think that we ought to think about, you know, especially people of color,
07:03is that, you know, we can get skin cancers.
07:06We can get melanoma.
07:07And, you know, and it's very documented that when we do get melanoma, it tends to be thicker, later diagnosis.
07:14So, you know, it's something that we want to put in our minds that dermatology isn't only for when things get super bad at any point in time.
07:22You know, we are your friend.
07:23And we are there.
07:24So if it's mild, moderate, severe, come and see us.
07:27We are more than welcome to see you.
07:29And it's interesting because you all talked about, like, usually we are the problems, right?
07:33We are the culprits of how we treat our skin.
07:35And we are causing these problems, often with the ingredients that we use.
07:39So, Sabrina, are there certain ingredients that are best for treating the conditions that Dr. Howard talked about,
07:45especially with melanated skin?
07:47Oh, for sure, Blake.
07:49We have ingredients to the rescue to help all various skin types and tones.
07:54And, you know, the most effective place to find them is nature.
07:57Yeah?
07:59You know, that's why at Avino, we use our scientific expertise.
08:02And when I think about ingredients, I think about the powerhouse of oat that we use, right?
08:06How many of you, okay, be honest, had oatmeal this morning or oat of some kind?
08:11You had your granola bar.
08:12You know, Dr. Howard, I see you.
08:13I did too.
08:15But oat, you know, you think about it.
08:17You're like, well, I eat it and it's good for me.
08:18But it does have therapeutic benefits as well for the skin.
08:21So one of the benefits is that it moisturizes the skin, right?
08:25It hydrates the skin.
08:26It can balance the pH of your skin as well.
08:28And by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it's recognized and categorized as a skin protectant, right?
08:35And that goes a long way when I think of Dr. Howard, and I'm sure she's going through her list of, you know, OTC drug actives.
08:42And oat is part of that, right?
08:44And it's a natural ingredient.
08:46It goes a long way for your skin.
08:48So that's one ingredient that I would definitely highlight.
08:51And as we think about, you know, Dr. Howard talked about those with itchy, dry skin, eczema-prone skin.
08:57Oat is a great natural ingredient to be able to apply and a product to use to address some of those skin conditions.
09:02And then another one, we talked about signs of hyperpigmentation, is soy.
09:08Now, soy is traditionally used way back when in Chinese medicine, right?
09:12But it has a surmount amount of, it contains vitamins, lipids, proteins, all the good and great things that we need it to contain to work.
09:21And, you know, soy is known to brighten the skin and bring forth that radiance, right, that we're always looking for, right?
09:27Our melanated sisters and brothers were looking for that glow.
09:31And soy is one of the ingredients that could come about for the answer, right?
09:36You know, for Aveeno, we have a, ours is patented.
09:40We have a patented process that we truly are able to identify ways to preserve the integrity and bring forth the best of that ingredient.
09:47Because soy has what we call two, it has special inhibitors to block pigmentation.
09:53So that's why it works and functions as a really key ingredient for, to help address the needs for tone and texture on the skin.
10:02So those are, those are a few.
10:04Go ahead, Blake.
10:05No, no, no.
10:05I was, I was going to hop into more oat.
10:07I'm intrigued.
10:08Oh, okay.
10:08Go ahead.
10:08Like you said, but you know, like there's so many different products, right?
10:12So, you know, like we, we talk about ingredients, but then there are so many products that come with that.
10:16And we don't necessarily want to load up on that.
10:18We don't want to be too oily or we don't want to over hydrate, hydrate the skin.
10:22So when it comes to like a balm versus a lotion versus a serum versus a moisturizer, what should we be looking for to really hydrate the skin properly?
10:32Great.
10:32You know, I really love that question for me, especially as a scientist, a product developer, translating and really crafting a portfolio that people can use really comes down to some of what Dr. Howard has already alluded to about knowing your, what your skin conditions are.
10:48And then now being able to select the ingredients and the product to best suit it.
10:51So in colder months or when you're feeling drier on your skin, maybe something more substantive, like a cream that's heavy, you apply it.
11:00It's, it's fast absorbing, but it gets in a lot of places, whether you want to use it on your face or your body, right?
11:05You feel it on, right?
11:07Right.
11:07You think about when we were little girls, right?
11:09We have to get out the door Sunday morning.
11:11Your mom's like, make sure your needs are properly moisturized, got moisturized.
11:15You're everywhere, right?
11:16So it's one of those, right?
11:17Maybe swaps.
11:18Right.
11:19With the stockings.
11:20Yes.
11:21But nowadays also the different formats that I like serums, right?
11:27These are new.
11:27These are lighter weight and texture.
11:29They're on the go.
11:30They can be applied in different areas of your face and your body.
11:33And they're still bringing forth the same moisturizing benefit that you like with that heavy cream.
11:37And then another, another product form that I like personally, that's in between is called a bomb.
11:42And even more so from a, you know, Dr. Howard, you may like it too.
11:46It really drives compliance, I think, also for patients looking for something in between an ointment where you need to use something heavy and therapeutic, but you don't want it to get greasy and everywhere.
11:56A bomb is kind of in the middle.
11:58It's fast absorbing, but yet it's not sticky that it gets everywhere.
12:02And it really brings, brings forth the aesthetics that you want to still, still have your skin look healthier looking, you know, day to day.
12:11And that's what I look to.
12:12The technology is like there, you know, like the technology with formulation.
12:16I mean, kudos to you, Sabrina.
12:19The technology is definitely there.
12:24And like some of the like older, you know, concepts when you think about, you know, moisturizing or cooling our skin, you know, there's so much new technology in that we should embrace when it comes to skin health.
12:36And the thing is, you know, of course we talk about moisturizing, right?
12:39But we still have to cleanse.
12:41No matter if you have dry skin, no matter if you have super oily combination, we have to cleanse.
12:45But when it comes to cleansers, how do you locate the best cleansers?
12:49You know, there's sulfate based cleansers, sulfate free.
12:51What do we need to be looking for, especially for our skin in a cleanser?
12:57For sure.
12:58And again, it comes down to also like for our melanated skin, but as well as the skin condition or our skin type that we're really trying to address.
13:04If you do have more skin that's drier or that you may categorize yourself as having sensitive skin or any of the other conditions that we've talked about, you may want to choose a cleanser that is sulfate free, right?
13:16It's a little bit less harsh on the skin versus something that does contain sulfates.
13:20And what sulfates are for people who want a quick science lesson is that that's your cleansing agent.
13:24That's what's doing the work, you know, in your body wash and your facial cleanser.
13:29So that's one of the points that I'll point out, Blake.
13:32And soy, I hear about soy, right?
13:36So when it comes to soy, Sabrina, how is that good for hyperpigmentation?
13:42And Dr. Howard, I'd love to hear your insight as well.
13:45Yeah, sure.
13:46When it comes to soy, soy is a powerhouse ingredient as well.
13:50It has lipids, proteins, vitamins.
13:52It also has special components part of it that help to inhibit pigmentation, right?
13:59That's really where soy helps to address boosting radiance and helping your skin look brighter.
14:06And, you know, it's used in ancient traditional Chinese medicine, but it's still good even today in 2021, right?
14:12And beyond.
14:13And, you know, Dr. Howard, I'm sure you can allude to the benefits of it in products and in use.
14:18And it's a natural ingredient.
14:19I'm big on ingredients.
14:21You know, I'm big on really turning around the bottle when you go to the store and really identifying those key ingredients that are going to target and do what it's supposed to do, right?
14:33Soy being one of them.
14:35Like, it's well-documented.
14:36All the things that Sabrina just talked about, it's well-documented to do those things.
14:41Another thing is when it comes to your ingredient list and choosing the right ingredient for hyperpigmentation like soy is giving it time.
14:48I find that sometimes people, you know, they just want to, like, go to the store, pick it up, put it on their food.
14:55And, like, next week, the hyperpigmentation you got last summer, you know, from the barbecue, you expect it to be going on a week because you use this product.
15:03So that's, like, one thing that I really want to drive home is that everything takes time, especially hyperpigmentation.
15:09There was a word that I used, you know, earlier, and it's called persistent.
15:12You know, it's really persistent, especially in deeply-complected skin, persistent pigmentation.
15:17So you have to give it time, the ingredients, the time to do what it's supposed to do.
15:22And, you know, when we keep talking about these specific, you know, conditions, of course, we've, we've, we're beating the hyperpigmentation and, and the eczema, you know, the eczema beat because that is so prevalent, especially in our communities.
15:34You know, why is it a higher index, not just for Black people, but for Black women, the ingredients that specifically treat these, these conditions?
15:43How do these ingredients help and how can we incorporate them into our routines?
15:50Yeah.
15:50You know, I mean, one of, one of the ways that I see from my perspective is that we can ensure that we're using products, right, that, that have these ingredients to begin with.
15:59First, you know, as you have that, you've identified your products, it really comes down to having a, you can have a simple skincare regimen, right?
16:08It begins with cleansing your skin.
16:11You want to remove some of the, the oil, the dirt, the, the, the, the, the, the bad things that we talked about, right, that can live on the surface of your skin, off of your skin.
16:20But then you also want to moisturize it, hydrate it, right?
16:23Selecting products that have these natural ingredients that, that moisturize, right?
16:27Like Dr. Howard already mentioned, looking at the labels, right?
16:30The back of the labels, I want to take one step further, looking at the labels and looking at the directions as well and how to use the products, you know, go, they go a long way.
16:39Dr. and I, Howard, are, we're smiling because it's, you've seen it all, you know, and then, you know, if you need a product for treatment, you have that step afterwards.
16:49And your last step, you wrap it up with a product that can protect your skin.
16:53And so with an SPF, which is really key, right, Dr. Howard?
16:56So clutch.
16:57So yeah, and gentle doesn't mean weak, right?
17:00Like I don't know, my household, if it smelled a certain way, if it made you feel parched, it was doing the job, right?
17:08Like if it's a trick, you feel like tight when you're done.
17:12Everything, you know, right?
17:13You feel like it's doing what it's supposed to do.
17:14And like one of the take-home points that I always tell my patients is gentle doesn't mean weak.
17:20You have to really like recondition our mind.
17:23I love it.
17:24If it's stronger, it's better.
17:27Absolutely.
17:28Or more uses than being the canopy, you know.
17:31Exactly.
17:31Exactly.
17:32Not true.
17:32Another point too is the SPF.
17:34You know, I was raised in South Florida and I don't think my mom ever really talked about using SPF at some beach.
17:41I played basketball outside, you know, I was a youth fair counselor.
17:46And I mean, I was like so many times and we just never talked about SPF.
17:51Imagine me, my parents are from the Caribbean.
17:52So use of a sun product, it's like, what is that?
17:56I grew up in the sun, sun kiss, you know, their whole life.
18:00Yeah, right.
18:00But, you know, absolutely not.
18:03We definitely need to protect our skin.
18:05You know, yes, we have this beautiful brown skin, but we definitely need to exactly protect it, right?
18:10Like when you get in the car, put the suit belt on, you want to protect your life.
18:13The same thing.
18:14You have to protect your skin.
18:15So SPF is so, so, so clutch.
18:17And we're speaking very generally here, right?
18:19We've talked about, you've mentioned an SPF, a moisturizer, a cleanser.
18:23And I'm sure that everyone is wondering.
18:25There are so many people that are like, just tell me what to buy.
18:27Just tell me what to buy.
18:28Like, all this information is great, but just tell me what I need to be using.
18:32So, Sabrina and Dr. Howard, what are some Aveeno products that are wonderful in treating these two very prevalent conditions that we talked about today?
18:41Sure, Blake.
18:42So, yeah, not going to tell you what to buy, but based on the natural ingredients that we talked about, soy, we do have a line that's called positively radiant.
18:49That's for the face, which can help address, you know, giving you that glow and that radiance that's all driven from the soy that's in the products.
18:58And you'll find moisturizers, you'll find cleansers, you'll find scrubs, you'll find everything you need.
19:02There's SPF products, as Dr. Howard and I alluded to before, that are very important to use.
19:08And then, you know, thinking about if you have itchy dry skin or dry skin in general, we have body care line from ranging from called daily moisture all the way to our facial care line that we've recently launched called Complice Restore, which, you know, address the therapeutic needs for dryness, right?
19:25Whether you categorize yourself as having sensitive skin, which at times I do, there's a product there for you.
19:31So, and, you know, I've talked about the different product forms, which I love, again, as a scientist, product developer.
19:37There really is unique needs that you don't have to compromise on having your skin look healthy and feel healthy with the types of products you use.
19:45There's an array of different balms and lotions and creams and serums that you can select across our body care and the facial care line.
19:53So, Dr. Howard, what are your thoughts?
19:56So, I am going to say I hear this question all, well, I hear that, I hear the question all the time in the office.
20:02Just tell me what to buy.
20:03Yep.
20:04And my answer is always like, hmm, I'm not going to tell you what to buy.
20:08Because, and, you know, the reason for that is because we tend to take the ownership away from ourselves and give it to someone else when you ask a question like that, right?
20:21Like, tell me what to buy.
20:22But I feel like as Black women, we really need to take the ownership of our health ourselves.
20:28That a part of it is I am informed, I feel empowered, and therefore I can make a good decision.
20:37A part of that is choosing a well-established brand, a brand like Aveeno.
20:42It's well-established that, you know, they're giving you the best technology, the most effective ingredients that you can trust to use.
20:48But, you know, in the grander sense of things, really that health as a Black woman is so important to us.
20:57Because, like I said, you know, any of us on this call right now, we can think of a mom, an auntie, you know, a sister at church, or whoever, a friend that you can think about.
21:10Like, girl, did you really, did you call such and such to make that appointment?
21:14And we haven't really done that.
21:15So a big part of making sure that we kind of, like, minimize those disparities is just taking care of ourselves and taking ownership of that, of our own health.
21:27Yeah, and I love that, Dr. Howard, because when you think about the accountability that we should have for ourselves, our life is dynamic.
21:34That's what I hear from you loud and clear, right?
21:36I think of all these women in my life.
21:38I think about all the activities that the three of us may be happening right now, right?
21:42We wear many hats.
21:43We're doing lots of things, but our skin, it's just as dynamic.
21:47It's breathing.
21:48It's living.
21:49And so just the same way that it goes through different seasons, periods, you go through it personally.
21:54Around your environment, you may be living in cold weather, warm weather.
21:59Your skin needs to be adapted just the same.
22:01And the products that you select, the ingredients that you use, and the accountability that you have for yourself just to pay attention.
22:07What's happening to my skin today?
22:08It really goes a long way.
22:11So, yeah, right on.
22:13And kind of shifting gears a little bit, you know, Aveeno is such a trailblazer when it comes to skin care.
22:19But they're not only thinking about themselves in this process.
22:22And, you know, I've seen firsthand the work that Aveeno's done with Essence to help elevate entrepreneurs in the skin and hair care industries.
22:29So, Sabrina, can you tell me more about Aveeno's larger mission and why it's so impactful for our community in particular?
22:37Right.
22:38You know, at Aveeno, our mission is to unlock the therapeutic benefits of nature's most restorative ingredients, right, through science.
22:44We talked about our clinically proven products.
22:46But it doesn't stop there.
22:48And that's why this partnership with Essence was so critical to support our entrepreneurs, their ideas, their solutions.
22:55I mean, our brand was founded, our two brothers called the Musher Brothers, who were entrepreneurs, right, and who saw the value and proposition of oat, right, and the benefits that it could bring to the skin.
23:06And just the same, we want to provide access, education to our Black female entrepreneurs to continue that journey, right?
23:12It doesn't just stop yesterday.
23:14It continues on to today and beyond.
23:16So, that's why we're committed, right, to create a more diverse and inclusive, equitable skin care industry.
23:22I mean, it's just the beginning.
23:24So, with that, you know, we had lots of participants in our Aveeno Skin Health Startup Accelerator.
23:29And our first ever awardee, I would love to congratulate Dr. Isfahan Chambers-Harris from Elodia, who was our first recipient, right, to win this accelerator.
23:40And also give congratulations to Ari Turner from Look Good Live Well, who also received a surprise secondary $100,000 grant from our team, you know, to continue to excel.
23:51And so, you can see, right, Blake, Dr. Howard, how important, right, this is just the start of this initiative for us.
23:59And I would love for you and everyone on the call to check out their products at the Essence Virtual Marketplace.
24:05So, Blake, I already know that you're all over that.
24:07That's my thing.
24:08That's my thing.
24:11Yes.
24:11You're ready.
24:12I'm ready.
24:13You're educated.
24:13You know the ingredients.
24:14You've heard from Dr. Howard.
24:15You can come visit her anytime at the office, right?
24:18And now you've got the products that you're going to take accountability to go check.
24:23I'm well-equipped for perfect skin.
24:24I am well-equipped for perfect skin.
24:26Awesome.
24:27So, ladies, thank you so, so much for joining me today.
24:31And, of course, a huge thank you to Aveeno for being our partner for this segment.
24:34It was so incredible, even for me, to learn about the power of natural ingredients to treat skin conditions that are so prevalent, as we've said, like eczema and hyperpigmentation.
24:44I'm also so truly heartened by all the amazing advancements in skincare.
24:48By black entrepreneurs and the efforts that Aveeno continues to make to elevate them in the skin and hair care industries.
24:54As you ladies said and know so well, our skin is beautiful and it's unique and it deserves to be celebrated and cared for with products that were designed for us.
25:03So, ladies, thank you so much.
25:05As I said, it was such a pleasure and I hope that you all have a wonderful day.
25:09Dr. Howard, if I pull up.
