00:00Hi, I'm senior beauty editor, Tasha Turner, and welcome to Beauty All Access.
00:08Today we are here with curly textured expert of 25 years, Diane DaCosta, author of Textured Tresses and owner of Simply Beautiful Boutique Salon in White Plains, New York.
00:20Diane is here today to talk about transitioning.
00:24Now, all of you know that I've been transitioning and I've been going through it. Trying to transition and keep it straight is a lot.
00:31So Diane is here today to give me some tips, tricks, and all of her secrets to doing it smoothly.
00:37So, Di, my first question to you is, how do I do this? This is hard.
00:42It is, transitioning is a brave and courageous thing. It is very hard.
00:47And for you, I applaud you.
00:50You've seen me. You know me.
00:52I see you're doing it and you're almost there. So you have a little more to go.
00:55Yeah.
00:56But I know that you asked me before about your edges and how do you keep that sleek and smooth.
01:02I suggest that you moisturize your edges before you put your wrap, satin wrap band.
01:11Oh, I never do that. Uh-huh. Bands, that's the key word, band.
01:15And brush your edges with a four-bristle brush, a smooth four-bristle brush before you go to bed.
01:21Now, can you recommend any products?
01:23Because what happens is I put my scarf on.
01:25So now that Diana told me I need to put my scarf away and get a wrap band because that will keep it smooth for me,
01:32what type of moisturizing product do I use on mine?
01:35Well, the best thing about now is that in transitioning there's a lot of smoothing treatments and that actually helps keep your hair smooth longer for up to two to three weeks sometimes.
01:49So this also comes with that balm or a cream, a smoothing cream that you can actually put on your edges and brush that in.
01:58So that also reinforces the smoothness and repels the water from washing your face as well as working out.
02:07So when you put that on before you wrap your hair, you can also apply that to your hair and your edges.
02:13I would recommend Carol's Daughter Chocolate Smoothing Cream.
02:19That's really, really, really, really, really good.
02:21Nice.
02:22I'm going to definitely try that.
02:23Now, it's summertime, so I'm a bit scared just summer in itself makes it scary.
02:28What are some of the things that I can do just to keep going?
02:31Or should I start switching up my hair?
02:33Maybe I shouldn't be smooth anymore?
02:34Well, I think you can do it up to probably June.
02:37You can smooth it out.
02:39And if you're going to blow dry in between, you can use the macadamia serum and then blow dry with that before because it's a heat protector.
02:49Also, about July, I would say, you should switch over to some other natural sets that you can wear that will hold for the week.
02:59Something like the flat twist set would be great, which is also a protective style.
03:05And then release it so you can have the curly look and the wavy look because your hair is now probably going to be all natural by that.
03:11I know.
03:11I haven't seen it wavy and curly, so it's time for me to make the switch, guys.
03:15DYI, can I do any of these things at home or do I have to go to a salon to get these done?
03:20No, you can actually blow dry flat on your hair at home.
03:24But what I would suggest is that you use a blow dryer that is, this is a Chi Pro and it's a low EMF, so it's not more than 1,000 watts.
03:36So it's going to blow the air, but it's going to be a consistent air that's going to be enough for you not to burn out your hair like the 1,800 watts or the 2,000 watts.
03:46It's going to be easier for you to actually put the comb attachment on, and this one comes with a comb attachment.
03:52But what you want to do is you want to use, you know, a comb, a wide tooth comb or a bone comb that's very wide, and then smooth it out first.
04:01Smooth out the curls and anything at the end that if you have split ends, you want to smooth it out first with the blow dryer, and then put the comb attachment on after that.
04:11And then use the comb attachment.
04:14Right through.
04:14It will be much easier, and then it will go straight through.
04:17And then also you want to put it in sections.
04:19You want to comb it into at least six sections.
04:22Now I've been hearing about co-washing.
04:24Is that essentially putting oils into your hair or not stripping it of the oils?
04:29Why would I co-wash?
04:29Well, basically the co-washings are conditioners infused with essential oils and no sulfate.
04:35So basically in between, especially if you're wearing your hair natural, you can co-wash every third day.
04:41So that is actually cleansing the hair, and a little bit of the scalp, but mostly the hair, and releasing all of the products, and then conditioning.
04:52Nice.
04:52Definitely need your wrap, band, satin.
04:57I'm switching to the band, guys.
04:58And then you can also put your scarf on top of it just for double protection.
05:04Imagine this.
05:05You get a wrap.
05:07It fries off, yeah.
05:08You wrap it first, you're under the dryer with the wrap, if you do that technique.
05:13Then you blow dry it a little bit, then you flat iron it.
