00:00Today on Essence Live, want to talk to Orange is the New Black's Black Cindy?
00:05We've got actress Adrienne Seymour live in studio, so send us your questions for her now.
00:10We're helping you get a summer makeup look in just five easy steps.
00:14Our Slater shade panel is ready to take on the week in pop culture and news.
00:18Plus, it's an exclusive performance from recording artist Bryce Vine.
00:22But right now, it's the hot list, the biggest stories you're buzzing about today.
00:30Now, Claudia Jordan is doing some serious backpedaling after she all but confirmed that Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes are dating.
00:38The two have been rumored to be an item for some time now.
00:40And when Jamie's good friend Claudia was asked about them in a podcast interview earlier this week,
00:45she said the Oscar-winning actor is, quote, very happy with Katie.
00:49But now she says she misspoke.
00:51She told Entertainment Tonight, a lot of times I get asked questions about celebrities.
00:55Some I know, some I don't.
00:57A lot of times we just give a safe, kind of generic answer.
01:00Sorry to not have this bombshell story, but I cannot confirm them.
01:04Mm-hmm.
01:05Right.
01:06Well, what say you?
01:07Should Claudia have just kept her mouth shut?
01:09Have you ever put your foot in your mouth and told a friend's secret that you shouldn't have?
01:12Weigh in in the comments section or use the hashtag Essence Live.
01:15After over 25 hours, the Democratic Party's sit-in against gun violence is over.
01:25Led by civil rights icon and Georgia representative John Lewis, the sit-in was a response to the mass shootings that have plagued our country.
01:31One of their demands is for the passage of recent bills forbidding people on the FBI's terror watch list from purchasing guns.
01:37Newtown, Grover, Charleston, Orlando.
01:45What is the temping point?
01:48Are we blind?
01:51Can we see?
01:53How many more mothers, how many more fathers need to shed tears of grief before we do something?
02:01Let's talk Essence Live, fam.
02:04Do you think the congressional sit-in will finally lead to better gun control?
02:08Should the U.S. follow Australia's lead and ban assault weapons altogether?
02:11Or should we all strap up and just be ready to defend ourselves?
02:15Send us your comments now.
02:19After seven years of requests, Dwayne Wade has finally posed for ESPN, the magazine's body issue.
02:25And the fam response is a little mixed.
02:27While Dwayne used the magazine article to open up about his body insecurities, recalling how he was always afraid to be naked in front of other people because of his outie belly button, others aren't impressed with the cover photo.
02:38His chosen vessel wrote,
02:39I just lost respect for you, sir.
02:41This is not the Dwayne Wade that I find inspiring.
02:44How many zeros does one have to have to still maintain a good name, dignity, and God's will?
02:49Hashtag unfollowed.
02:50Hashtag praying for you still.
02:53Simone's World wrote,
02:53They really brainwashing our black men, SMH.
02:57And King Kylo was one of many who questioned Dwayne's sexuality.
03:01He wrote,
03:02Trying to be like Prince or you suspects?
03:04Because it looks like your wife caught you sending nudes to Chris Bosch, LOL.
03:08But it's C-Dub.
03:10Just be cool and shut all of them down with this.
03:13Brothers can watch porn every day and see naked people, including men, and don't get labeled gay.
03:18But when an athlete poses nude, it's a different story.
03:22Why?
03:22The level of ignorance is disturbing, SMH.
03:25Seriously, ESPN has been doing the body issue for years.
03:28So why all the hate for Dwayne now?
03:30And how does a black man stripping down to overcome his insecurities mean he's being brainwashed or is secretly gay?
03:35Send us your comments now because we're going to get all up and into it for Slater Shade next.
03:40It's Thursday, June 23rd, and Essence Live starts now.
03:44Welcome to Essence Live.
03:54I'm your host, Dana Blair, and we are already laughing all up in the studio.
03:57I cannot wait to get into the show.
03:59Streaming live on Essence.com and on Facebook.
04:02So you know what?
04:03That means we want to hear from you.
04:05Send in your comments, questions, and shout outs to our Facebook page right now.
04:08Use the hashtag Essence Live on Twitter and Instagram, or you can email us at Essence Live at Essence.com.
04:14All right.
04:14Let's kick things off with some Slade or Shade.
04:18Joining me today, we have one of the stars of the hit show, Orange is the New Black, Adrienne Seymour.
04:23Hi, guys.
04:24Welcome, welcome, welcome.
04:25We have Essence.com digital beauty editor, Virginia Lohman.
04:29Hello, hello.
04:29Welcome back, my love.
04:30Thank you for having me.
04:31And last, but certainly not least, comedian Michelle Boutot, back on the sofa.
04:36Oh, where's my camera?
04:37Hi.
04:38Oh, yes.
04:38Turn it on.
04:39I slayed that one.
04:41Barkle.
04:42Yes.
04:43How are you?
04:43Yes, girl.
04:44Welcome, welcome, everyone.
04:46So, as I mentioned, in today's hot list, there were some mixed reviews over Mr. Wade's ESPN magazine cover.
04:52Folks calling him gay for deciding to bear all and questioning if he did it just for the money.
04:57Panelists, what are your thoughts?
04:59Are we slaying or shitting on the count of three?
05:02One, two, three.
05:04Oh, slaying.
05:05Oh, no, no, no.
05:06Oh, oh, oh, oh.
05:06Get it together.
05:07Slaying.
05:08Edgen, I'm going to start with you because of the choreography.
05:10Why is it a slay?
05:10I mean, I am one that celebrates the body.
05:14And if it's one that beautiful, why do we put it down?
05:18I mean, look, I'm a nudist in private, okay?
05:22All right now.
05:23So, I definitely think there's nothing wrong with that.
05:25Now, if his wife is fine with it, then that's the only person he has to answer to, in my opinion.
05:29I heard that.
05:30Slay, did you slay?
05:31You slay it.
05:32You slay it.
05:32Yeah, that cover was, yes.
05:35It boiled your potato?
05:36It was just, the potato is twice baked.
05:39Oh, that's twice baked.
05:41Good.
05:41That's the first twice baked you have on S5.
05:42Yes, good.
05:43That's amazing.
05:43Okay.
05:44Now I'm hungry.
05:45You're so good on.
05:46I'm hungry, too.
05:46I could go for some time.
05:47I mean, if I lose seven pounds, everybody has to see me naked.
05:49I think people are very uncomfortable seeing such a beautiful black man naked, and it's making
05:54them question things.
05:55Women are naked all the time.
05:56Why can't he be naked?
05:58He is beautiful.
05:59And he's not even bearing.
06:01He's not bearing.
06:02Right.
06:03You know, what the family kids really are.
06:05Right.
06:06The kids are covered.
06:07I would be okay with that, too.
06:08Ew.
06:09He's not doing a LeBron, as they say.
06:10Not a LeBron.
06:12KK, what's going on over there?
06:13What do the fans say?
06:14All right.
06:15There's some support and some confusion.
06:17Uh-oh.
06:17All right.
06:18So, Ike Akay says, where's the correlation between sports and nudity?
06:21Maybe I have a little more understanding to do about what these guys are going through.
06:25All right.
06:26Dia Thomas says, um, I guess I'm not understanding why you need to be naked, though.
06:30Uh, there's some support, though.
06:32Renita James says, the human body is beautiful when it's well taken care of.
06:35Nothing wrong with a tasteful body pose.
06:37We came in this world this way.
06:38Only people who are ashamed of their body will have something negative to say.
06:41Right.
06:41Yeah.
06:41Yolanda says, Yolanda Dooms, not a big fan of Wade, but I loves me some chocolate.
06:46Nice body.
06:47Okay, sweet tooth.
06:49Also, like, athletes, the whole point of it is they use their bodies.
06:52That's how they have made it to their...
06:53I don't have an issue with him being naked.
06:55The pose wasn't my full forte.
06:57What would you want?
06:58His legs open?
06:59You know.
06:59One leg up.
07:00One leg up.
07:00If we don't have a body issue, let's have a body issue.
07:03But I don't see why sports and body have to correlate to the point where he can't, you know, be new.
07:09But, I mean, obviously, this is a particular piece about the body.
07:13So, let that just be what it is.
07:15This is a beautiful cover.
07:16Like, I'm so strong.
07:18I think it's tasteful.
07:19I mean, it's gorgeous.
07:20Yeah, it's art.
07:21That's the thing.
07:22But we're going to go on to number two.
07:23Okay.
07:23We'll come back to see.
07:24So much chocolate.
07:25Yeah, because I could talk about this for a long time.
07:27Yeah, we could talk naked all day.
07:29All day.
07:30We could talk naked later.
07:30We have been some...
07:31There have been some rumblings on Toni Braxton and Birdman being an item after this backstage photo of the two went viral.
07:39Yes.
07:40Ooh, with the lip bite.
07:42Since then, Toni has brought Birdman on stage during some of her concerts.
07:45And there's even video of the two holding hands during a recent radio visit.
07:49Toni's mother, Miss Evelyn, had this to say about her daughter's alleged boo.
07:53Take a look.
07:54He is a nice...
07:56He is a very nice young man.
07:59He's very nice.
08:00I said that on the show.
08:01I don't care what others say about him.
08:04He is a nice...
08:05He is.
08:06He is very, very nice.
08:08He's full of respect.
08:09Yes, he is.
08:09He put some respect on it.
08:10He put some respect on it.
08:12He is full of respect.
08:14Respect.
08:14So what do you think?
08:15Should we put some respect on their relationship?
08:18What say you Slade or Shade-ing Toni and Birdman?
08:20One, two, three.
08:22You know what?
08:23Shade.
08:23A slushé and a slade.
08:25Oh, you're 50-50.
08:26Virginia, why are you on the fence?
08:28So I can't shade because...
08:30Or fully shade because I feel like you have to be in support of love, if that's what that is.
08:35Okay.
08:37Well, I guess that's the Slade part.
08:39Okay.
08:39The shade part is...
08:42I don't know if I'm necessarily shading the idea of them having a relationship or if we're speculating that they're together because a picture circulated.
08:51You know what I mean?
08:52I don't know.
08:52I just think...
08:52No, no, no.
08:53Michelle, thoughts?
08:54I don't know.
08:55I feel like Toni's been through so much, especially Dancing with the Stars.
08:58That was terrible.
09:00I feel...
09:01Just kidding, y'all.
09:02She's like, what are you living?
09:03You know, like, let her just do her thing.
09:04Even if they're just friends or friends with benefits or if they're just going to collaborate and do something.
09:10You know, maybe she just wants to, like, date a bad guy.
09:13Not a bad guy.
09:13Like a bad boy.
09:14A Birdman.
09:14A bad boy.
09:15Like a rebel.
09:16I thought you said a bad guy.
09:17I was like, wow.
09:18No, not a bad guy.
09:19Like a bad boy is what I meant.
09:20Adrienne, what do you want?
09:21She wants to date a guy with some respect.
09:23You throw shade.
09:24You shade.
09:24What's your shade in?
09:25I live here.
09:25I'm making sure the cameras see all of this.
09:28See it.
09:28See alls of it.
09:29See all of this.
09:31All of this.
09:31And this ponytail is throwing the shade.
09:34Yes.
09:34The shade with the ponytail is...
09:35Okay, let me just say this.
09:37And I love the Braxton's.
09:39I have been a fan of the Braxton's TV show on We Channel since the day one.
09:45And having said that, if you know Toni Braxton, Tony does not deal with those kind of guys.
09:52Now, Tracy, I can see Tracy in that all day long if she wasn't married.
09:58That's right up Tracy's alley.
10:00But I just feel like, and I hate to say this, but I would not be surprised if a little picture
10:08that floated out became this big thing and they're riding the wave of that.
10:11Right.
10:11Yeah.
10:11Right.
10:11That's my main thing.
10:13You slay, but I'm throwing shade.
10:15You slay, but I'm throwing shade on that.
10:17Fair enough.
10:18Okay, that's fair enough.
10:19Kayla, what are the fans out there saying on Facebook?
10:21Everyone is just saying no, no to Toni.
10:23Rhonda Morales says no.
10:26Tanisha Grant says girl bye.
10:27I don't even like him.
10:28Girl bye.
10:28Oh.
10:28And Yvette Sandy says, Toni, please don't.
10:32Oh, sorry.
10:32Doesn't he like...
10:34Oh, oh, oh, oh.
10:35Doesn't he like what?
10:36And now we are going to move along.
10:38We're going to move right on along to another story you may remember from earlier this year.
10:43What is this?
10:43Got to reel them in in here.
10:45Pittsburgh TV news anchor Wendy Bell was fired after a comment she made about a shooting went viral.
10:50Although there have been no arrests made in the case, Wendy wrote this on her Facebook.
10:54They are young black men, likely in their teens or in their early 20s.
10:58They have multiple siblings from multiple fathers, and their mothers work multiple jobs.
11:03These boys have been in the system.
11:05They know the police.
11:06They've been arrested.
11:07She is now suing the station for back pay, legal fees, and her old job, claiming that if her comments were about white criminals or if she happened to be a black person, she wouldn't have gotten fired for her remarks.
11:19Uh-oh.
11:20On the count of three, one, two, three, are we slating or shading?
11:23I'm so confused.
11:23And what are you shading or slating?
11:25Oh, we're on the fence.
11:26Michelle, you start this one off.
11:28I think that the news network slayed by firing her.
11:30Right.
11:31I think her comments are so shady.
11:33Mm-hmm.
11:33So that's what I mean to say.
11:35That's fair.
11:35That's fair.
11:36Yeah.
11:36Virginia?
11:37She just tried it.
11:38Like, you tried it.
11:40She did.
11:40She went too far.
11:41And there's really, like, no further words.
11:42Like, you tried it.
11:43You made a misinformed statement and decision, and now you're paying the consequences of it, and you want people to feel sorry for you because...
11:50You were insensitive.
11:52Because you tried it.
11:53Like, you tried it.
11:55You tried it.
11:55And you didn't get the final word on this, and you got to shave.
11:57Well, I will just say this.
11:59Anytime you make comments without the facts, you're making a lot of assumptions.
12:03Right.
12:04And when you make assumptions, you're making an A double money sign out of yourself, not me.
12:12You catch the drift.
12:13Oh.
12:13You better sit in there.
12:14Flip the brain.
12:15Flip the brain.
12:16Thank you so much for my Slay the Shade panel.
12:17Kaylee, you have a few shout-outs over there for me.
12:20A shout-out to Yolanda Mitchell.
12:21She says, what's up, ladies?
12:23And people are really excited to see our guest, Cindy.
12:26Everyone is shouting out Black Cindy.
12:28Everyone's saying, hi, Cindy girl.
12:30Hi, Cindy girl.
12:31Shout-out to everyone.
12:33Well, there you go.
12:35All right, we got some fans.
12:36Thank you so much, Michelle.
12:37Thank you so much, Virginia.
12:38Adrienne, you're going to stick around a little bit, right?
12:40We're going to have a little kiki.
12:42Don't move, because Adrienne's going to give us some tea on the new season of Orange is the New Black.
12:45Make sure to send in your questions or comments right now.
12:48Now, now, now, now, now.
12:49But first, Vivica Fox and Jessie T. Usher tell us about why they signed on for Independence Day resurgence.
12:58There had been a rumor about Independence Day happening for the last five years on and off.
13:03And then at the time, Will, he was doing so many sequels back-to-back-to-back that just couldn't fit in his schedule.
13:10And then I heard that he wasn't going to be a part of the sequel.
13:15And I hate to, I'm going to just keep a real job.
13:18Selfish actress over here was like, well, damn, there go my storyline.
13:21They didn't, the Black people ain't going to be Black.
13:23They could be Black.
13:24So I was a little bummed when I heard that he didn't want to participate in the sequel,
13:27which he just wanted to take his career in another direction.
13:30And the beautiful thing was that he did give us his blessings.
13:34And so when I got the call from my agent saying that they want to keep your storyline alive,
13:39so I'm now a hospital administrator.
13:41And she's matured and mentoring her son.
13:44Dylan, who is played by Jessie T. Usher, is stepping into the shoes of Stephen Hiller, who was played by Will Smith.
13:49At this point in his life, you know, when the film starts up, he's a captain in this new earth space.
13:54There's a lot of people who look up to him.
13:55You know, he's lived in his dad's shadow forever, so like, you know, there's pressure for the character necessarily.
14:02So me playing him, it was just so different than a Stephen character.
14:05I kind of just got a chance to come in and do my own thing.
14:08They took 20 years to like make a sequel because they wanted it to be good.
14:12And the fans have been requesting it for the last 15 years.
14:15They wanted it back.
14:16It means something to them.
14:17And just the way that we made the film was like a creative tornado.
14:21I don't know.
14:22And, you know, if people are excited to see like a great disaster movie, then this will be the one.
14:27Hi, my name is Tamara, and I'm from Jersey, and you're watching Essence Live.
14:37You're watching Essence Live.
14:39I'm your host, Dana Blair.
14:40And hanging out with us a little more today is an actress you know as Black Cindy from Orange is the New Black, Miss Adrienne Seymour.
14:47Hello.
14:47Yes.
14:48Sexy eye.
14:49Sultry glance.
14:50Thank you so much for joining us.
14:51Is this your first time here at Essence Live?
14:53It is.
14:54Did you enjoy yourself a little sleet of shade?
14:56I enjoy it.
14:57I feel like now I have to put on like my good girl look.
14:59So I'm like, hi, guys.
15:00How are you?
15:01I'm Adrienne.
15:02Now I'm going to jump right into it.
15:04Black Cindy is a huge favorite with fans.
15:07You're known for a lot of your facial expressions and quick one-liners.
15:11How did you approach this character?
15:13I feel like, you know, Black Cindy was a character for me in the making, just dating all the way back to my birth.
15:20And then I felt like I knew, I think everybody knows a Black Cindy or they are a Black Cindy.
15:25That is true.
15:25She's a spirit animal.
15:26So she wasn't, you know, hard for me to kind of tap into because I felt like growing up in Atlanta, I ran across several Black Cindy's.
15:35Mm-hmm.
15:35Shout out to all the Black Cindy's of the world.
15:37Shout out to Atlanta.
15:39Who keep it real.
15:40Mm-hmm.
15:41One hundred.
15:42Now, do fans come up to you in the street and, like, start saying your lines from the show back to you?
15:46And you're like, wait, what?
15:47I said that?
15:48I'm like, oh, I said, yes, yes.
15:49There are some that I have some favorites.
15:51But then I always love it when fans have their favorites that they share with me.
15:57Mm-hmm.
15:57Absolutely.
15:58Like the Bill Gates one, the Shot to the Twat, the, you know, the one about the Amalekites and the rats.
16:09Yes.
16:09You know, it's all yes.
16:10I love it.
16:11I love it.
16:11And speaking of your fans, we actually have a fan question coming to you.
16:14Kayla, what you got?
16:15A lot of comments coming in.
16:17Everyone's showing love.
16:18Anali Ali, I'm only watching for Orange is the New Black talk.
16:21I cried real tears, Adrienne, real tears, she said.
16:24Uh-oh.
16:24Sunny Witherspoon, love you, Adrienne.
16:27Misha Slack says, I watched the whole season for Orange is the New Black in one day.
16:31Oh, my God, I want more.
16:32LOL.
16:33I watched the whole season, too, in one day.
16:34Ooh, I'm only on four, y'all.
16:36You only on four?
16:37You know, is it weird to, like, binge-watch yourself?
16:41I don't even know if I can stay awake long enough to binge-watch myself just because the few moments that I have, I'm usually, like, falling asleep and tired.
16:48But, um, it is, you know, I think the show is so good that I enjoy watching my castmates work because they do some very dynamic work.
17:00And I'm a fan of theirs.
17:02I'm a huge fan of theirs.
17:03That has to make for a great work environment, too.
17:04Oh, yeah, absolutely.
17:05We respect each other immensely.
17:06We are big supporters of each other when we're on set and we're filming, like, difficult scenes, like some of the ones that you see this season.
17:13We're always in support of one another and give each other what they need, you know, for them in that moment.
17:19And you have a lot of political undertones in your conversation, especially in your role.
17:23Are you, is Adrienne as political, if you will, as Black Cindy?
17:26Well, Adrienne certainly has her opinions.
17:29Um, it's interesting when it comes to politics because I'm, I'm a little in and I'm a little out because I feel like, and I say this because I worked for the government years ago and I just felt that it was just like this kind of like a rat race, you know?
17:43Everyone was in it, but was anything really ever getting done?
17:47So I sort of felt like sometimes does my opinion even really matter?
17:50Um, no shade, but I, I love government.
17:54Um, but, um, I, I feel that sometimes politics can be a very touchy subject.
18:00So I, I, I'm knowledgeable enough to be able to maybe have an opinion, but all the facts and figures, I try and stay out of those.
18:07That's fair enough.
18:08That's fair enough.
18:08We have another fan question for you.
18:10Kayla?
18:10Kayla wants to know, is Black Cindy still a Jew?
18:14Yes, honey, you can call me Tova with an H. Thank you.
18:20Yes, Tova with an H.
18:23All right.
18:24And now we're going to switch gears a little real quick.
18:26Just have a little fun, do a little role play, if you will.
18:28Okay.
18:29As Black Cindy, can you tell us whether or not you would vote for Trump?
18:32Excuse me, would you vote for Trump or Clinton?
18:35Did you even have to ask Black Cindy, Adrienne, that question?
18:39She would not vote for Trump.
18:40No.
18:41At all.
18:42At all.
18:43At all.
18:44At all.
18:44And I just mentioned that a lot of us binge watch.
18:46I binge watch.
18:47I was making fun of some people on the crew because they didn't binge watch as fast as I did.
18:50Shame.
18:51For this season.
18:52Shame.
18:52What say you about those who are putting spoilers out there on social media?
18:56Because a lot of people are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and they're like,
18:59for those of you who binge watch, you're telling me what happened in, you know, the last episode.
19:03What do you have to say to fans about that spoiler for others?
19:05I can understand because this season is probably one of our most powerful,
19:10dramatic, and emotionally impactful season.
19:13So I can understand why fans want and have the need to want to get that emotional,
19:21those emotional feelings out.
19:24I just tell the people that I haven't watched it yet, just stay off social media.
19:27You can take it for a day or two.
19:29Girl, you just asked somebody to give up their firstborn just now by saying,
19:32stay off social media.
19:34I know.
19:34I just got on the Snapchat, and I swear I am posting something on Snapchat every 20 seconds.
19:39So check out my Snapchat.
19:40What's your Snap handle?
19:41Adrienne C.
19:43More.
19:44And don't forget the C if you want to see more.
19:48Oh, you saw what I did there?
19:49Yes!
19:51That's me.
19:52Bars all day.
19:53Adrienne, thank you so much.
19:54Thank you so much.
19:54You're welcome to Essence Live anytime.
19:56If we get you a badge, you can swipe right on in.
19:58You can see Adrienne Orange is the New Black, streaming now on Netflix.
20:01Coming up, if you're missing the fun, carefree days of the 90s, stick around because Bryce Vine
20:06is going to perform his Ode to the Decade later in our show.
20:09But right now, singer Dawn explains the inspiration behind her song, Wake Up.
20:18So my third installation to my trilogy is called Redemption Heart.
20:22It's the final installment to my trilogy of albums that I set out to do like three years ago.
20:28So one of my favorite songs and visuals actually was just released.
20:32It's called Wake Up.
20:33And I'm really proud of it.
20:35It talks about really wanting to stay in your dream and applaud the dreamers out there.
20:40When I originally embarked on this whole process, I told everyone I was independent and I told
20:45them that I was going to do a trilogy.
20:47And they laughed at me.
20:49And they told me that they loved to use the word, you are so ambitious.
20:52Good luck.
20:52You know, that's kind of like the pat on the head, good try little girl kind of thing.
20:56And I don't know, it ignited a fire in me to say, okay, I'm up for the challenge.
21:03And three years later, here we are and we're at the final installation of the album.
21:07And it really rang true.
21:09Like, no one should wake you up from your dream.
21:11If you see it the way you see it, go there and stay there as long as you choose.
21:16Create the world you want to live in.
21:17It says, don't wake me up, I've been dreaming of you.
21:33And this love, and it's not this love as in a relationship, but this love and this passion,
21:37this art that we have, it ricochets from the next dreamer to the next dreamer.
21:42So it ricochets from me to you.
21:43So there's this kind of light that I'm basically saying, this passion that I have,
21:48when you feel that from a dreamer, it's contagious.
22:01You are watching Essence Live.
22:02I'm your host, Dana Blair.
22:04All right, ladies, it's officially summertime.
22:07And we need to make sure we keep it cute, especially when it comes to our makeup routines.
22:11Get the face right.
22:12Here to help us do just that is makeup artist, Tara Larn.
22:15Welcome back.
22:16Thank you for having me back.
22:17Thank you for being here.
22:18Did you like my singing?
22:19Almost had it, that note.
22:20Shade of it all, shade of it all.
22:22But anywho, you're here today to show us how to achieve the ultimate summer face in five easy steps.
22:27But before we get into that, what is one must-have item every woman needs in her beauty bag this summer?
22:32I think a lot of people overlook an important aspect in beauty, especially summertime beauty, and that's SPF.
22:38It's really important to have.
22:40It protects our skin from the sun's rays.
22:43A lot of times, women of color feel like they don't need it or it's not necessary.
22:47But even the Melanated Beauties need SPF.
22:50Yes, Melanated Beauty.
22:51And so we are going to jump right into it.
22:53What is, well, before we do, I have to acknowledge our beautiful model, Jessica.
22:57Hi, Jessica.
22:58Hey.
22:58Thank you so much for coming in and being our fabulous summer model.
23:02Okay, so five easy steps.
23:03I don't really believe you that it's going to be five and that it's going to be easy, but what is step number one?
23:08Step number one is that important aspect I was telling you about SPF.
23:11A lot of cosmetic brands start with at least a 15 SPF.
23:16A lot of them go to at least 30 from their foundations to their tinted moisturizers.
23:21Today I'm using a tinted moisturizer.
23:23It's going to make the skin nice, free, and airy.
23:26This is not like a beat.
23:28We're going for just a nice, everyday look that can translate from work to a barbecue to a day party.
23:36And y'all love y'all's day parties.
23:37Just want to look fresh, not overly done.
23:40Don't worry too much because the last thing you want to do is melt in front of people when you're out.
23:44What is step number two?
23:45Step number two is brows.
23:46Brows to me are like the frame of the face.
23:49I like to use a product like a pencil because not only can I control how much I'm putting on my brows, I feel like a lot of people are going for the overstated, heavily contoured brow.
24:03I call that the Instagram eyebrow.
24:05Well, you know, I just feel like a nice natural brow is everything.
24:10So that is step number two.
24:12Number two.
24:13Yes.
24:14Okay.
24:14What is step number three?
24:16Step number three is actually one of my favorite steps.
24:20It's blush.
24:21Oh, and this is featured in the Essence Beauty Box this month, yes?
24:25It sure is.
24:26This ombre blush, which I actually feel like I really need to get some of.
24:29That was my hint that I just dropped.
24:31That was a hint that I just dropped.
24:33You can steal it after.
24:33I dropped a hint.
24:34Okay.
24:35So talk to me a little bit about the brush.
24:37A lot of women, I find, are kind of scared of blush.
24:41Brush is a great way to enhance the skin tone.
24:45It just adds a little bit of a pop to the skin.
24:49I love this ombre brush because not only does it have that nice, beautiful bronze color,
24:53it also has, like, this nice shimmer on top that isn't overstated.
24:56I feel like a lot of times with illuminizers and things of that nature,
25:01you can go a little bit too harsh, and nobody wants to look like a brick of gold.
25:05I'm not adding any more product.
25:06I'm just blending and building on from what I have.
25:08So how do you know where to apply on the cheek and how far to bring it up?
25:11Like I said, it's right here on the apple.
25:12I would put the concentrated amount right here and just buff out.
25:16Okay.
25:16Do a nice, fluffy brush and just buff it in.
25:19Remember, you can always start with a little bit and then you can increase because, remember,
25:23you can't take it off.
25:24Okay.
25:25So if you start with a little, add it, you're good.
25:27But you can't put too much and take it off.
25:29Got you.
25:29Fair enough.
25:30So what is our next step?
25:31I think we're already up to number four.
25:32We are true.
25:33We're up to one of my favorites, the lips.
25:35Yes, lip.
25:36I feel like lips, especially like a statement lip, is the place where you can have fun.
25:40You know, you don't have to be too matchy-mashy with your outfit.
25:43You can put something on that breathes life into your skin because, remember, you're going soft.
25:47So I'm starting with her on like an orangey red.
25:51I picked this red because, like I said, orange looks really good on suntan, sun-kissed skin.
25:57So I picked this orangey red that is sure to pop any outfit and any skin tone.
26:05Now, during the summertime, is there a rule that you should try to go for a matte versus a gloss, like one or the other?
26:11I definitely like to go for a matte just because it's a little bit low maintenance.
26:16If you don't mind having to touch up your gloss or anything like that, go for it.
26:20Like, have fun.
26:21But I definitely like mattes.
26:22I feel like they're low maintenance.
26:24You can have fun and don't have to worry about your lip coming off.
26:27And this lip is actually coming together really, really nicely.
26:31And also, I like using, I feel like every woman should have a lip brush in her kit.
26:35This is great to get precision and to get like a nice application.
26:39Especially when you're using like a really bold color, right?
26:41Exactly, because you want to make sure that you get it in a really nice way.
26:43Now, can women of our various complexions, can they do any color?
26:50Or are there any rules of how bold certain complexions should or should not go?
26:54I definitely feel like makeup is a self-expression.
26:57Like, go and try that color that you probably have seen one of your girlfriends in.
27:01Mm-hmm.
27:01Or maybe one of your favorite stars on the red carpet.
27:03Go and try it out.
27:04You know, there's so many makeup retailers that allow you to try looks on before you take it home.
27:10So, you know, step out of your box and try a new color.
27:13Or before you go out to that day party.
27:14You know.
27:15You know, just saying.
27:17Okay, now do you need liner when you're using a bold little purple?
27:20Um, that's why I really think that lip brushes are important.
27:23Because they allow you to have the precision of getting the color applied rather than, you know, using added products.
27:30Okay.
27:31Fair enough.
27:31And now the piece de resistance.
27:34Now.
27:35Number five.
27:35Our final step.
27:36What's the final step?
27:37The final step is another thing that I feel like a lot of women of color don't embrace.
27:41And that's bronzer.
27:42Um, a lot of times we think about, um, suntans and how they're, they come into the skin.
27:50We don't understand is that we can create shadows in our face.
27:53A lot of people are really, you know, big on the contour.
27:56Sometimes it can be a little drastic.
27:58I just like to create, like, a little kind of warmth to the skin.
28:02Because, you know, when I think bronzer, I think of shimmy shimmy.
28:04And we've already added some sparkle to the cheeks.
28:06How do we know how, like, how to pair the proper bronzer with the shimmer in the cheeks?
28:10I mean, don't be afraid to add, if you want to get a bronzer with a little shimmer, there are a lot of brands out there that do provide that.
28:17It's great for the summer.
28:18You want to look nice and, you know, sun-kissed and dewy.
28:21But if you want to go for a little bit more of a subtle, just that warmth, I would go with a matte like I have here.
28:26And I see you're applying around her face.
28:27What are the rules for application?
28:29Yeah, I like to think of bronzer as the rule of three.
28:32You want to do the shape of a three.
28:33You want to start from the forehead, go under the cheekbone, and under the chin.
28:38Again, on this side, the rule of three, over the forehead, into the cheek, into the chin.
28:42You can do, like, nice circular motions, kind of like a buffing.
28:45So this kind of, like, is, like, you know, shading it in.
28:48And just like that, one, two, three, four, five.
28:50Very natural.
28:51You'll look absolutely stunning.
28:53One, two, three, four, five.
28:54There we go.
28:55All right.
28:55And don't go anywhere because, you know what, these tips are super easy to follow.
28:59We'll have all of this on the site for you.
29:01Try them this summer.

29:13You like it?

29:16I'm not doing that.

30:40She wrote on her Facebook page,

31:33Hope he does much more.
