00:10Growing up there was this explosion of Black television, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, you had
00:16Family Matters, a different world.
00:18I had examples of Black children, Black families, Black women, Black men that represented who
00:27I was.
00:28What made those shows so real and so relatable was the fact that they dealt with a lot of
00:33the situations that I felt I dealt with as a kid.
00:36When I first read the breakdown for Cindy, I immediately felt as though I knew who this
00:42character was.
00:43I felt I had seen her on the streets growing up in Atlanta, Georgia.
00:47I already had this kinship with her.
00:50What we're doing on our show inspires a lot of Black women.
00:56When we did our Essence cover and when that magazine spread came out, I caught one of
01:02this picture of this little girl at a grocery store standing in front of a magazine rack.
01:08You have InStyle and Elle and Harper's Bazaar and all these big magazines that feature white
01:14women in mainstream America.
01:17She picks up this Essence magazine and all six of us are on the cover and she's looking
01:23at it.
01:24And I just remember thinking, wow.
01:26I remember when I was a little girl and I wanted to see that.
01:30And now here we are, six beautiful women on this cover and these girls can see that.
01:37And it was just amazing.
01:38It was beautiful and it was like about time because I think that this show and the characters
01:45that we portray reflect the fact that in our world, in our society today, we deal with
01:51everyone from around the world and working on a show that sort of hits on so many different
01:57people and so many different topics that affect people's lives is even inspirational for me
02:04because it reminds me that yes, as an artist, we can entertain you, but we can also teach
02:10you and we can also show you the world that you look at every day.
