Transcript
00:00Thank you so much, guys. Hey, Alicia Renee here on the red carpet for Essence Women in Music.
00:09I'm so excited. The ladies of the hour, of course, both Grammy-nominated, Andra Day and Jasmine Sullivan.
00:15They shall be here in a minute. Let's see who else we can catch on this lovely red carpet.
00:24Jasmine Sullivan. First of all, you smell lovely.
00:27You look beautiful.
00:28What has been a black girl magic moment, in your opinion?
00:31Recently, Beyonce's new video, I think, is wonderful. It speaks volumes.
00:36I'm sure everybody's saying right now the Super Bowl.
00:39Beyonce's Super Bowl.
00:41I think it was important, and I feel like it was a beautiful thing.
00:44It's an interesting time and a difficult time, I guess, for race politics in this country.
00:49And I think people who are showing a lot of diversity in media and social media,
00:53I always like to see Willow Smith and how positive and sort of way out she is.
00:57Oh, when I think of black girl magic, I think of, there was actually a moment that I experienced personally with Lauren Hill, who's musically one of my idols.
01:04She's an incredible woman, and I just thanked her. I thanked her for who she is. I thanked her for making music that was truthful, no matter the criticism.
01:12And she told me, she said, just to remind me, she said, we're witnesses, and that's what we're here to do, and you'll be fine if you remember that.
01:19And so that really just stuck with me. It was amazing.
01:21Okay, this is what it sounds like. Becoming a teenager, I think, made me more aware of all of the magic around me.
01:27I guess it was performing for the president and FLOTUS, yeah, for POTUS and FLOTUS at the White House.
01:33That was a phenomenal, yeah, phenomenal moment.
01:36What is your black girl magic moment over the last year?
01:39Our February cover where we celebrated black women across all different genres.
01:43I just want to acknowledge all the great things that are happening, you know, the little justices that are happening.
01:48We have that.
01:49We are doing amazing things.
01:51Be went out there at the Super Bowl and killed. Shunda Rhimes exists.
01:55I never thought that I could see so many amazing, beautiful, talented women.
02:00Just us women just taking over, you know, just in every field and everything that we do.
02:06We're just so powerful and so strong in everything.
02:09All right, guys, that is it for me.
02:10I'm going to head inside and enjoy myself at this lovely event, Essence Women in Music.
02:14Thank you so much for having me, guys.
02:16I am Alicia Renee.
