Essence Live asks Are Cases Like #JordanEdwards Numbing Us to Gun Violence?
Transcript
00:00If you hear stories like Jordan Edwards, what do you do to
00:06cope? Do you call into work black, binge watch favorite
00:10movies, you just kind of vent with friends, what do you do?
00:14First and foremost, I have to take a minute to myself. A lot
00:18of the times when you read things off the social media,
00:20they get skewed. I have to do my own research and figure out
00:24exactly what's going on to kind of absorb it and process it.
00:27Once I have the whole story, I pray first and foremost.
00:31And then I kind of just sit back and let my emotions hit me.
00:36A lot of times we also kind of fight the emotions that come
00:39with it or we try to ignore them. And that's not what we need
00:42to do to kind of positively address this. So first and
00:46foremost, pray and then kind of just process.
00:49And I think what you're saying, I think what you're saying,
00:51we have to feel something. Definitely. We want to,
00:54whatever we're feeling, we want to go with it.
00:56Alisha, you've been on the front lines of protesting this
01:00type of violence as an activist. How do you personally
01:03stay sane while fighting for our rights?
01:06Well, the first thing for me, I think Saban is totally right,
01:09is just allowing yourself to feel. We get so much of this
01:13news all the time through so many different channels that it
01:18can create a level of apathy. There's so much information
01:21coming at us at all times that it is important to take a minute
01:25and just really feel and be in your feelings. But the other
01:29thing that's really necessary for me is to keep fighting. So it
01:34can be disheartening in moments like this when we see yet another
01:38black person gunned down for absolutely no reason. But what we
01:43also know is that the only way to change that dynamic is to fight
01:48fight for our lives. And so for me, the way that I channel that rage,
01:53that anger is into love for my people. And that love gets expressed
01:57through the work that we do at Black Lives Matter and in other
02:00spaces throughout the movement.
02:02that hope.
02:09If you have fun with your work.
02:11And that's a good way.
02:14And,
02:15thank you for doing my work.
02:17If you have fun to see you,
02:19have fun.
02:20I've never been doing the best work for you.
02:22I'm saying that this is the best work.
02:25And you might feel like I live in my life.
02:26I'm saying that this is how I live in a world of
02:28sure.
