The Trump administration is targeting birth control yet again. So there’s no better time to discuss how this little marvel actually helps (not hurts) women and their families.
Transcript
00:00If you're a woman, you probably know by now that Donald Trump and his team of destructors
00:05have decided to roll back the Affordable Care Act's no-copay birth control mandate.
00:10That means that employers can now choose to stop covering contraceptives in their health
00:14care plans.
00:16The Trump administration claims religious freedom here.
00:22Trump actually said that he would not allow people of faith to be targeted, bullied or
00:26silenced anymore as his reasoning for targeting birth control.
00:30Side note, the irony here is stunning.
00:34The ACA also allowed employers to exempt out due to religious beliefs.
00:39And that all happened while 62 million women still had reliable and affordable access to
00:44birth control.
00:45So let's be clear.
00:47This has nothing to do with religion.
00:49It has everything to do with stripping women of their rights.
00:52If you don't understand just how important birth control access is, let me over explain
00:57it to you.
00:58More than half of women on birth control don't just take it to plan their families or for
01:03pregnancy prevention.
01:04A large number use birth control for fibroids, menstrual regulation, and other issues.
01:10And by the way, fibroids are almost three times as likely to occur in Black women than any other
01:16race of women.
01:17Speaking of Black women, 4 in 10 said they couldn't afford prescription birth control costing more
01:22than $10.
01:23So this access is crucial.
01:259 in 10 women will use birth control in their lives.
01:29That means you probably know someone using it right now.
01:32And of the 62 million women with access to affordable birth control under the ACA, 15 million are
01:38Black.
01:39And considering existing health disparities, Black women stand to lose the most if employers
01:44don't commit to protecting our coverage and our rights.
01:48And here's the thing.
01:49Religious pregnancies are down right now.
01:51This administration wants to demonize birth control, but where are they when women can't
01:55afford to provide for their children?
01:57Oh right, they're complaining about the welfare state, which is also a myth.
02:03Bottom line, if this administration really gave a damn about religious freedom, personhood,
02:09being pro-life, and protecting our vulnerable, they would recognize that birth control access
02:14literally saves lives, but we know where their morality stands.
02:18Until next time.
