00:00Hey world, it's Christina Coleman with Essence.com and this is The Overexplainer.
00:07There seems to be a lot of talk about women's rights.
00:10Specifically, what the hell we do with our own bodies.
00:13And a lot of that talk is happening in rooms filled with men, many of whom probably have no idea what a cervix is.
00:20Let alone a, uh, we won't go there.
00:23But since the dark cloud that is Donald Trump's presidency took hold of America,
00:27Senate Republicans have been working feverishly to defund Planned Parenthood, citing the use of funds being used for abortions.
00:34Now, I don't have enough time to discuss why the hell y'all should stay out of our wombs.
00:38Sidebar, can we do like an hour long episode on abortion?
00:41Cause yeah, we, we need that.
00:44But I do want to reiterate that Planned Parenthood is more than abortions.
00:48I can't even believe I have to say this, but let me over explain it.
00:53For one, about 90% of Planned Parenthood services are preventative care.
00:58That means affordable birth control, STD prevention, education services, and overall healthcare services for people with financial burdens.
01:06Where's the All Lives Matter crowd now?
01:09In addition, PP can be directly attributed to reducing the rate of teen pregnancies in the U.S.
01:15And it's worth noting that the defunding of Planned Parenthood will hurt women that look like me.
01:20Although most of the centers are in predominantly white neighborhoods, 14% of patients nationwide are black.
01:26Oh, wait. And the last point?
01:29Abortion services account for just 3% of Planned Parenthood's work.
01:33So hands off Planned Parenthood.
01:35I never understood the obsession with controlling women's access to healthcare.
01:40Seriously, white men, could you imagine a cabinet of women deciding what happens to you down there?
01:46Feeling uncomfortable yet?
01:48Until next time.
