00:00My name is Tamika Mallory. I am, some call me a civil rights leader, others say I'm an activist.
00:10I think the thing that I'm probably most proud of is being the mom of an 18-year-old black boy.
00:16His father was murdered when my son was just two years old.
00:20The main thing was that I know my son could be the next one.
00:24And the only thing that I could think of is that I have to fight like hell.
00:28I've been ever committed for over 16 years of my life to civil rights work.
00:33Wherever I can lend a few dollars to people who are doing grassroots work, I try to be present.
00:40And I encourage other people to do the same.
00:42I think that the grassroots movement are the most critical component of all the work we're doing.
00:49So there are a lot of people who say, but I mean, you know, how can I get involved in that?
00:55The person who's an accountant can actually show up and donate two hours a week.
01:00The person who may be a mental health expert can go in and dedicate time to talk with mothers who have lost their children.
01:10Or to help mediate situations.
01:13Because that leads you to other things.
01:16So then you start getting on the mailing list.
01:19And they send you information about events that are coming up or other ways that you can be involved.
01:23Those small things start the bigger things.
01:27And we all have to work together.
