00:00I'm Akon Zlobu, and today on Essence Now, the cast of Survivor's Remorse is here to
00:09dish on their latest season.
00:11And we're going behind the scenes of the new issue of our latest cover with Macy Nash.
00:17But right now, it's time for the hot list, the biggest stories you're buzzing about
00:21today.
00:25Three CEOs have now stepped down from the White House's Manufacturing Council Board
00:29due to President Trump's slow and, frankly, half-assed responses to the white supremacy
00:35rally in Charlottesville.
00:36First it was Kenneth Frazier, pharmaceutical giant Merck, and then Under Armour's CEO Kevin
00:42Plank.
00:43And now the head of Intel, Brian Krasanich, has also left the council, saying the divided
00:47political climate is hampering the efforts to rebuild American manufacturing.
00:52And now many people want other big businesses to follow suit.
00:56Lily Vamps tweeted, Pepsi, GM, Blackstone, please leave Trump's advisory panel.
01:01A New Gallup poll shows that Trump's approval rating has dropped to just 34%, his lowest since
01:11taking office.
01:12But is anyone surprised?
01:14The man at any moment could launch us into war with North Korea, and it took him almost
01:18three days to denounce the white supremacy we saw in Charlottesville.
01:24Racism is evil, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs.
01:30We're just going to let social media take this one.
01:32Jaleesa Stu tweeted, he read that dry statement as if he was reading instructions on how to make
01:38a cake.
01:39Dawna Swan Johnson wrote on Facebook, he's not going to say anything bad about them, because
01:43he's one of them.
01:49So where do we go from here?
01:50A lot of Americans are providing their own solutions for ending racism and white supremacy.
01:56Writer and activist Sean King is naming and shaming the Charlottesville attackers one by
02:01one.
02:02On Instagram, Lena Dunham advocated for more accountability.
02:06All white people are responsible for the upholding of white supremacy and for the fall of it.
02:11Nancy Pelosi has another solution.
02:14If the president is sincere about rejecting white supremacists, he should remove all doubt
02:19by firing Steve Bannon and other alt-right white supremacist sympathizers in the White House.
02:24So give us your thoughts in today's viewer poll.
02:26How should America combat white supremacy?
02:29Send us your comments using hashtag Essence Now, because we're talking about it next.
02:33It's Tuesday, August 15th, and it's time for Essence Now.
02:46Welcome to Essence Now.
02:47I'm your host, Makon Jofu.
02:49And remember, you can talk to us at any time using the hashtag Essence Now or by email at
02:54Essence Now at Essence.com.
02:56All right, fam, what is going on?
03:00White supremacists in Charlottesville caused sheer mayhem over the weekend, all because
03:05they didn't want a Confederate statue removed.
03:07They left 22-year-old DeAndre Harris bloodied and beaten and 32-year-old Heather Heyer dead
03:14and the entire country just in disbelief.
03:17Heather's mother spoke with NBC News about her daughter's lifelong passion for justice.
03:21She saw in the lives of many of her African-American friends, particularly, and her gay friends, that
03:29equal rights were not being given and equal voices were not being shared.
03:36And she had long advocated for equality for all.
03:43Yesterday, when she was killed, she was doing that with people.
03:49She was saying, well, tell me why you're here.
03:52And I knew this because this is what her friends told me.
03:57And that's what Heather's life was all about, passion for fairness, passion for equality.
04:04Joining us now in the studio are two people very close to the fight against racism, friend
04:10of Essence, Quinton Washington, who spent four years in Charlottesville as a student at the
04:15University of Virginia, and Black Lives Matter co-founder, Patrisse Cullors, who joins us
04:19via Skype.
04:20Welcome to you both.
04:23Now, Quinton, let's start with you.
04:24What was the climate like in Charlottesville while you were a student there?
04:26Absolutely.
04:27When I was there, first of all, I just wanted to say, you know, looking back now, I see
04:31how great my experience was.
04:34One thing was definitely always support.
04:36So, you know, my entire time there was always a supportive environment for me, for our community.
04:40Yes, there were racial tensions.
04:42Yes, there were events that may have happened.
04:44We were in Virginia, but we weren't having it then and we aren't having it now.
04:48But did you ever have any specific encounters, any personal encounters with racism?
04:52I mean, nothing overt to me.
04:54And of course, the microaggression will always be present of, you know, being a Black student,
04:59trying to succeed.
05:00Yeah.
05:01And, you know, some type of racial tension may be there with me.
05:04But personally, I never had anything specific happen to myself.
05:07So I'm sure it's even more saddening to see it.
05:09Now, as an alum, you're leading the hashtag Take Down Hate campaign.
05:13Absolutely.
05:14Which encourages people to really speak out against racial hatred and violence on social
05:17media.
05:18How do we get involved in that?
05:19How do people get involved in that?
05:20Absolutely.
05:21So right now, we're working with the hashtag.
05:23We want you to just share your experiences, whether you went to the university or not.
05:25We want you to just think about, you know, the safety of our students and our faculty
05:30and staff and also think about your own experiences within your own college and universities.
05:34You know, this could happen in our backyard now, but it could be in your backyard tomorrow
05:39or the next day.
05:40We do know that there are some alt-right movements still happening across the country.
05:44Some have been shut down, like in Texas AMU, things like that.
05:48So we just want to make sure that we're providing a platform for others to think about how they
05:53can help their own students and alumni in other places.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Also, tonight, we just planned a vigil in Washington, D.C., starting at Thomas Jefferson Memorial
06:02at 8 o'clock tonight.
06:03Please, if you're in the D.C. area, can drive down.
06:06Support us.
06:07We are looking for it.
06:08It's important to come out and support.
06:09Very important.
06:10Support us and support Heather and the two policemen that lost their lives.
06:13We want to make sure that we're a united front for making things better.
06:17And thank you for your work.
06:18Now, Patrice, I'm sure you've heard of the account on Twitter, Yes, You're a Racist.
06:23It identifies people who protested in Charlottesville.
06:26What are your thoughts and accounts like that or similar movements of outing racists to get
06:31them fired from their jobs?
06:32Do you think it really has a long-term effect?
06:34I definitely do.
06:36I think it's so important that we are actually showing who the people are, giving them an identity
06:43and naming that these are the people that are causing harm and violence in our communities
06:48and that they need to be held accountable because some of the most troubling things that happen
06:52in Charlottesville, the police weren't there to hold people accountable.
06:56The first things police do at Black Lives Matter protests are arrest, tase, tear gas.
07:03And what we saw at Charlottesville was white supremacists and often violence go without accountability.
07:13So having folks, you know, I think what Sean King is doing, exposing white supremacists
07:17online and trying to get people to identify them is critical.
07:22Absolutely.
07:23Now, Attorney General Jeff Sessions says the Department of Justice will do a civil rights
07:28investigation into Charlottesville.
07:30As the co-founder of Black Lives Matter, what would you like to come out of that investigation?
07:34Well, I think we have to be a little bit concerned about Attorney General Jeff Sessions doing investigations
07:45into anything.
07:46I think, you know, his statement about calling the person who killed Heather Dreyer a white supremacist
07:52was important, but my concern is that as he is talking about doing an investigation of the protests,
08:00he's also talking about doing an investigation of the Disrupt J-20, which were the protesters
08:06that were out there protesting the inauguration of Donald Trump.
08:12And so, you know, historically, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been a known racist,
08:19and he has historically gone after activists in the civil rights movement.
08:23And so I don't think we should be so excited.
08:28We should be investigating how he's going to investigate.
08:31We should hold him accountable as well.
08:33That's absolutely right.
08:34So now we mentioned earlier the beating of DeAndre Harris and the death of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville.
08:39What do you say to people who see that and is a reason not to protest?
08:44Well, first of all, I want to send my condolences to Heather's family.
08:50And I want to send, you know, my deep love for DeAndre as he's recovering from his injuries
08:56and all of the people of Charlottesville that were physically abused, but also traumatized
09:03and continue to be traumatized by the experiences that have happened over the last couple of days.
09:09But I think that we should make sure that our communities are safe right now.
09:17And I think we need to make sure that, you know, folks continue to not just show up in
09:24the streets, but there are significant amount of policies, racist policies that this administration
09:31is upholding across the nation, but also that a lot of our local governments are upholding
09:38like the Muslim ban, like the continued disruption of undocumented communities, like the continued
09:47killings of black people at the hands of law enforcement.
09:50So, yes, we need to be in the streets.
09:53And our folks need to also realize that our local governments and our national government
09:58has to be accountable for the policies that they've created to allow for white supremacists
10:03that have been showing up in these streets.
10:07That's exactly right, Patrice.
10:08Now, Quinton, I'm going to toss it over to you.
10:10Some white celebs like Lady Gaga and Ellen DeGeneres have been called out for their responses
10:14to Charlottesville.
10:15Lady Gaga used the hashtag, it's not us, in her tweet.
10:18And Ellen tweeted, is this America now?
10:20So my question is, how do we get people to recognize their own biases?
10:24You don't have to carry a tiki torch to be racist.
10:26You absolutely do not.
10:28You know, it comes from ideas, it comes from how you were raised or born, and it comes
10:31from how you ultimately support what's happening.
10:35Whether it was you or not, it's happening, it's around us, and it affects everyone.
10:41Heather, you know, just to name one, was not African-American, so it's beyond a racial
10:46thing.
10:47It's beyond humanity.
10:48It's actually humanity.
10:49We don't want to represent those who represented hate and statues that continue to incite hate.
10:56Hate is large.
10:58People should be able to understand exactly what that means.
11:01And recognize their own biases as well.
11:03Absolutely.
11:04Absolutely.
11:05They have to recognize their own biases.
11:06And look at the bigger picture, that it's affecting people.
11:09Celebrities affecting your fans.
11:11You know what I mean?
11:12What are you doing about that?
11:13How are you representing your fans outside of just your music?
11:16We're listening at you, we're watching you, we're reading your statements, and we, you
11:20know, a lot of us begin to judge celebrities based on how they see us.
11:24Right.
11:25Yeah.
11:26That's absolutely correct.
11:27All right.
11:28Now, Kayla, what are folks saying on social media about this?
11:30It's such a hot topic.
11:31It is.
11:32People have a lot to say.
11:33So we're asking, in the wake of Charlottesville, how should America combat white supremacy,
11:36out them on social media, get them fired from their jobs, or let our woke white allies
11:40deal with them?
11:41So Damaris Croft says they should be outed.
11:43Cathy Cox says all states should ban riots that involve the use of any kind of equipment
11:47that can be used as weapons.
11:49Kristen McGarry says she feels that Charlottesville supremacists should have been flagged from the
11:53beginning, and that James Fields, the man accused of plowing through the crowd in Charlottesville,
11:58should have had his phone tapped and FBI should have had him on their radar.
12:01She says it's on all of us.
12:02It's our obligation to report, even if it seems silly or like no one is listening.
12:05Find someone who will.
12:06I'm done playing with these people, she says.
12:09Folks are dying out here.
12:10And Perry Escobar says quit spending on unnecessary things.
12:13Boycott Trump.
12:14Ooh, and that's it.
12:15That is so important.
12:16Patrice and Quentin, thank you so much for joining us.
12:18Thank you for having me.
12:19Such an important, important conversation.
12:21We really appreciate it.
12:23Okay.
12:24It's time to hear from you in today's Viewer poll.
12:26How do you think America should combat white supremacy?
12:29Send us your comments using hashtag Essence Now and we'll read the results later in the
12:33show.
12:34Now let's check in with our girl Kayla for social media.
12:37Do we have more comments, Kayla?
12:38Comments are rolling in and people have a lot to say about President Trump as well.
12:42Ms. Waverly Grant says this was 45's intent all along.
12:44It is the reason that he stirred those folks up during his campaign.
12:47He was deliberate in his attacks, but in the end, God will get the victory.
12:50Ooh, and that is so right.
12:52His responsibility will not be lost in this.
12:54Now keep those votes and comments coming in and we'll read them later on in the show.
12:59Coming up, Tashina Arnold and Tiana Paris are here and we're going to put their knowledge
13:03of NBA teams to the test.
13:05But first, have you seen Nisi Nash on the September cover of Essence?
13:10She looks amazing.
13:12This is your exclusive look behind the scenes.
13:21I define success as happiness because you can have all the worldly trappings, but if
13:28you have not figured out how to be happy in those things, how to have peace in those
13:34things, then you gain so much, but in the end have so little.
13:45Lola Falana was everything to me.
13:47At five years old, she was the most gorgeous black woman I had ever seen on TV.
13:51And I looked at my grandmother, I said, who is that?
13:53She said, baby, that's Lola Falana.
13:55And in that moment, I felt like God stamped on the canvas of my imagination, my destiny.
13:59I looked at my grandmother and I said, I want to be black, fabulous, and on TV.
14:04But the way I maintain my balance is that I'm very, very clear that being an actress is
14:12my due.
14:13But my who is to be of service, to go into the world and be a blessing, to go out there
14:18and give something and not just be a person who takes.
14:23You know, it's a challenge every day sometimes to be comfortable in the skin you're in because
14:29you may see things and look at things and say, oh, I don't like this or oh, I'm judging
14:34that there are moments when I am extremely comfortable in my skin.
14:38And I'm like, hey, this is what it is.
14:40You know, and then there are some times when I judge myself very, very harshly.
14:45And I'm like, man, you know, this skirt doesn't fit like it used to.
14:49Or if the if the hips weren't so big, this could look a little more fashion forward.
14:54You know what I mean?
14:55So sometimes I do have those moments, but I just try to tap back into appreciating my
15:02body and to just loving myself for where I am right this moment.
15:07And then when all else fails, I remember my grandmother always said, baby, when you's the
15:13only naked woman in a room, you looks good.
15:25Would you ever do runway again or campaign?
15:29I'd have to come out of retirement for something beyond massive.
15:33It can't just be like a boxer that's like, I want back in the ring.
15:37Like, no, I thought maybe you're going to give us a Jay Z.
15:39You know, Jay Z retired 10 times because he is a businessman and he understands when you
15:45say last, people want to be first to buy.
15:48You're watching Essence Now.
15:55I'm your host, Makon Jovu.
15:56And joining us in the studio is the cast of the hit show, Survivor's Remorse, which returns
16:01to stars on August 20th.
16:02Please welcome back to Essence Now, Tiana Paris and Tashina Arnold.
16:06Hey, ladies.
16:07What's up?
16:08Oh, y'all look like a million bucks.
16:09All right.
16:10Congrats on the fourth season of the show.
16:11What's the biggest obstacle that we'll see the Calloway family go through this season?
16:14Ooh.
16:15Hit it, Tiana.
16:16Oh, I thought Tashina was going to take it.
16:17Okay.
16:18Hit it, Tiana.
16:19I think the biggest obstacle this season is there are a lot of things from our past,
16:25from all the characters past that we've kind of been touching on in the seasons one through
16:30three that really just come full force this season.
16:33We meet some key players from Cassie's past, from, I was like Jessie, Cam's past and Emchuk
16:46as well.
16:47And just watching the characters really have to deal with this new arrival into their lives.
16:54It's hard talking about it because without giving away the story.
16:57Right.
16:58I got you.
16:59Yeah, with my kids, with Cam and with Mary Charles, they're searching for their dads.
17:05That's how we left it off in season three.
17:08And let's just say they find out.
17:11Oh.
17:12They find a lot of stuff out.
17:13It sounds juicy.
17:14It sounds really juicy.
17:15It is.
17:16Oh, okay.
17:17So the show does a really great job of tackling like real life issues, but in a non-preachy
17:22way.
17:23Given today's political climate, will we see some of that on the show?
17:25Most definitely.
17:26Yeah.
17:27You'll always see that on our show.
17:28Absolutely.
17:29Which is great because Michael Malley and Ali Leroy and all of our writers and producers
17:32allow us to share our own personal stories as well.
17:36So that's why a lot of the episodes come across as main current events and things that are happening
17:43now because it's a little bit of us inserting it.
17:47Right.
17:48I'm so glad that you brought up Michael Malley, though, because a lot of people are talking
17:49about how white people can't really tell black stories.
17:52So it's a collaborative effort.
17:53Most definitely.
17:54To work with you.
17:55So how do you feel about that criticism, though?
17:57Is it a valid sort of criticism that...
17:59Yeah.
18:00Yeah.
18:01I think it's...
18:02Hit it, Tiana!
18:03She doesn't pass in the front to Tiana.
18:04I see it.
18:05I got you.
18:06She's not militant.
18:07I got you.
18:08Like, she's able to convey to...
18:09Yes.
18:10I got you, boo.
18:11Tell it.
18:12I think that is absolutely a valid concern in our community.
18:16We want our stories to be told with authenticity.
18:19We want our stories to be told with heart and accuracy.
18:24And not to say that someone who is of another culture can't do that.
18:28As you see, Michael Malley is doing a great job doing it.
18:31But there is validity in wanting a story about you told by you.
18:35Right.
18:36As well as what we're doing over here on STARS with Michael Malley.
18:40It's a different perspective.
18:41You're having the two cultures come together and seeing what that does.
18:45And it's a lot of dialogue.
18:47There are moments where it's heated on set or in the room because someone feels like,
18:53well, you know, I think that is a valid way of saying that.
18:57Or that this family, no matter who they are, would go through that.
19:00And there are strong opinions on that set.
19:03You have some very strong opinionated actors.
19:06And it's a great debate, though.
19:09Where is it just human?
19:11Where is this just a human experience?
19:13And where does that split come where?
19:16Well, this is particular to our experience as an African American family.
19:20Michael Malley is not afraid to ask questions.
19:22That's good.
19:23You know, we love the fact that we play out a Catholic, you know, a Catholic, Irish,
19:29Irish Catholic family because we still get his perspective.
19:33So you have two worlds that collide, that meet, but that tell a new story.
19:38Right.
19:39And I think it's possible to be a black family in a different position kind of because I've
19:42never played a Catholic before.
19:43I had no idea what Catholicism was or how to go about being a Catholic until I asked
19:49questions to Mike.
19:50I was like, hey, what does it mean to be a Catholic?
19:52So we share our stories and we, but I love the fact that he's not afraid to ask us.
19:57Yes.
19:58It's important to ask a question.
19:59He asked us about the black culture.
20:00I love that.
20:01I know nothing about the white, Catholic, Irish culture.
20:03I ask questions.
20:04Right.
20:05So I think that's a win-win situation for us with Survivors Memorial.
20:08And that's why it's doing so well.
20:09But you know what?
20:10It is an amazing time to be a black actress on TV.
20:12We have Insecure.
20:13There's Empire.
20:14And these shows.
20:15Girls Trip!
20:16I love that movie!
20:17It was such an awesome movie.
20:18Yes!
20:19You need to be in part two.
20:20Oh my God.
20:21I auditioned for Girls Trip.
20:22Did you audition?
20:23My audition was horrible.
20:24I told you.
20:25I told you.
20:26You're probably too crazy.
20:27They're like, we can't air this on TV.
20:28Wait a minute.
20:29No, we need to air it.
20:30Okay, wait.
20:31Which character Tiffany Haddish?
20:32I mean, she's hilarious.
20:33Good for her.
20:34Jade is my girl.
20:35I did that.
20:36Which character were you up for?
20:37Tiffany's role.
20:38You were going for Tiffany's role?
20:39Yeah.
20:40What?
20:41I was going after your role, Tiffany!
20:42That role was, I think, almost mine.
20:44But she did.
20:45You did amazing, girl.
20:46That's hilarious.
20:47We love you.
20:48And we're so happy for Tiffany's success.
20:49But I did part two, because it's about to hit that 100 million mark.
20:52So that is great, right?
20:53Awesome!
20:54Yes!
20:55Yes!
20:56If one wins, we all win.
20:57We all win.
20:58But my question was going to be, how do you feel about these shows trend, right?
21:01Every Sunday, people are talking about Insecure, and people are talking about Empire.
21:05Do you feel like, perhaps, the survivor's remorse doesn't get the same amount of love?
21:09No, we don't.
21:10How do you feel about it?
21:11You don't.
21:12We don't.
21:13And Teyana was going to hold back, but Teyana went for it.
21:15Take it, Teyana.
21:16It's been a slow burn.
21:17And I told you, like, I've been doing television for so long, I knew from the moment I read
21:22this script, you know, it felt good.
21:24We did our first table read, I was like, this show is going to be phenomenal.
21:28But, it didn't get the recognition that it should have, because, you know, it was going
21:34to be a slow burn.
21:35You know, it needs to be pushed, it needs the money, you know, we have to get the budget.
21:39So, I think once we got out there after the second season, and then they put us on after
21:44Power, then we were able to get a little more recognition from people, because it got more eyes.
21:49Yeah.
21:50So, the more people that watch the show, and I noticed that people binge watch them.
21:52People love it.
21:53Yeah, they do.
21:54So, it's more of a binge watch show.
21:55And you guys do tweet when the show is on, right?
21:57Yes.
21:58So, make sure you follow them.
21:59All right.
22:00So, since y'all been here before, y'all are pretty much family at this point.
22:02I mean, listen.
22:03We're going to play a fun game with you.
22:05Are you down?
22:06Oh, no.
22:07Teyana is so excited about this game.
22:08No, I'm not excited.
22:09I can see it.
22:10Erica and I came to y'all.
22:12Okay.
22:13Only because I wasn't ready.
22:14I wasn't ready.
22:15You're ready, you're ready.
22:16Let's take a look at what happened the last time when we asked Erica Ash and Teyana and
22:21Tachina Arnold to try to guess famous black families.
22:23But the catch is, they couldn't say a few forbidden words.
22:26Watch this.
22:27A family that is very ghetto fabulous, and it's new.
22:33Ooh.
22:34And it deals with singing and things like that on a network show.
22:40Same player!
22:41Yes.
22:42Okay.
22:43Oh.
22:44Oh, I can't say the name.
22:45Okay.
22:46Oh, this is a seasoning that is popular in India.
22:49This is athletes.
22:5110 seconds.
22:52Dolls!
22:53No.
22:54We were just talking about her today.
22:55Because you wouldn't be messing with her.
22:57Okay.
22:58Three, two, one.
22:59Okay.
23:00What was it?
23:01What was it?
23:02The curry.
23:03Oh, my God.
23:04I like how you went with the seasoning, though.
23:06I like how you went with the seasoning.
23:08Chicken.
23:09I like Jamaican food.
23:10Chicken.
23:11Oh, you got so much to say.
23:13What?
23:14That was hilarious.
23:15Oh, my gosh.
23:16Okay.
23:17So, this time around, we're gonna switch it up and play some good old faction Pictionary.
23:22Pictionary.
23:23Here's how it works.
23:24We've got two teams.
23:25Tiana and myself will be on one team.
23:27And Tashina and our beauty editor, Nikki Brown, are on the other, on each team.
23:32So, one person will do the drawing, and the other person will have to guess.
23:35Now, since Survivor's Remorse follows a basketball family, you'll be guessing the names of NBA
23:40teams.
23:41But here's the catch.
23:42Here's the catch.
23:43You cannot draw any NBA logos, abbreviations, or numbers associated with the teams.
23:47And a correct answer must include the team's full name.
23:51For example, you can't just say the Hornets.
23:53It has to be the Charlotte Hornets.
23:55This is crazy.
23:56So, each correct answer gets a point.
23:57The most points win.
23:58And you can skip if you'd like.
24:00Got it.
24:01I think that was simple, right?
24:02Okay.
24:03Tashina and Nikki, you're up first.
24:05Who's gonna draw?
24:06Yes, I'm gonna draw.
24:07Okay.
24:08Go ahead and get in position today.
24:09I'm just gonna start.
24:10I'll move back, Tiana, out of my way.
24:12I'm back.
24:13Okay.
24:14Control room.
24:15I can't even.
24:16We get 45 seconds on the clock, please.
24:17Can I look at the card?
24:18All right.
24:19Nikki, are you ready?
24:20Yeah, go ahead.
24:21I think.
24:22Ready, set, go.
24:23Start.
24:24Okay.
24:25The 76ers.
24:26The Warriors.
24:27The Nets.
24:28The 8.
24:29Is Tashina already guessing?
24:30Keep going.
24:31No, no, no.
24:32What the heck?
24:33What?
24:34I don't know.
24:35Ducks.
24:36What?
24:37I thought a duck too.
24:38What the hell?
24:39A chicken, a chicken.
24:40Oh, beaver.
24:41A beaver?
24:42A beaver?
24:43A cat?
24:44A teddy bear?
24:45Tiana, you're on my team.
24:47The, the, the, oh God.
24:50A pig and a teddy bear soup.
24:55A teddy bear NBA team.
24:58A tree.
24:5910 seconds left.
25:00Um, forest.
25:01Oh.
25:02So, it's Cleveland.
25:04We're counting down.
25:05The, the, the, the Nets.
25:08The, oh Lord.
25:09Time's up.
25:10Time's up.
25:11Ding, ding, ding, ding.
25:12Time's up.
25:13What is it?
25:14What were you trying to draw on a game?
25:15A Memphis Grizzlies.
25:16Oh, a great.
25:17This, this big.
25:18None of us know any of these big kids.
25:21That was good.
25:22No, that's good.
25:23No, that's good.
25:24Thank you so much.
25:25We don't know these doggone teammates.
25:27All right.
25:28That's all right, Nikki.
25:29That's all right, Nikki.
25:30That's all right, Nikki.
25:32It's all good.
25:33I can't even talk junk because I'm about to be a mess.
25:34It's all good.
25:35All right, Tiana, get in position.
25:36I'm about to be a mess.
25:37I really appreciate that bear.
25:38It was, I was a bear.
25:41Come on, sit down.
25:42Come on, sit down, Nikki.
25:43All right, so the score, unfortunately, is zero.
25:45So, Tiana, the score to beat for us is zero.
25:48All right?
25:49We just need one.
25:50If you get one, you win.
25:51I'm just saying.
25:52Okay.
25:53I can skip all I want.
25:54You can skip all.
25:55Just draw one and we win.
25:56Do they get points if I skip?
25:57No.
25:58Oh, okay.
25:59They don't, so we gonna do it.
26:00All right.
26:01Control room.
26:02Can I please get 45 seconds on the clock?
26:03I'm gonna be a distraction.
26:04You're ready.
26:05All right, are you ready?
26:06Mm-hmm.
26:07Tiana, are you ready?
26:08Ready, set, go.
26:09She ain't ready.
26:10She ain't ready.
26:11This looks like...
26:12She can't draw.
26:13Oh, a claw?
26:16Mm-hmm.
26:17This looks like...
26:18Oh, the claw's going out now.
26:20No, it ain't.
26:21You can't draw.
26:22You can't speak.
26:23You can't speak.
26:24Oh, it's a person.
26:25It's a face.
26:26It's not a face.
26:27Okay.
26:28Is that hair?
26:29No, it's not hair.
26:30What is that?
26:31Tiana, you can't speak.
26:32Okay.
26:33The burns.
26:34A beard.
26:35A beard.
26:36A beard.
26:37Tiana, you can't talk.
26:38You can't talk.
26:39Okay, skip, skip.
26:40Go to the next one.
26:41Oh, wow.
26:42We just have to get at least one.
26:43How do you draw?
26:44You can't talk.
26:45Tiana, if she talks again, I'm getting 10 points.
26:47What is this?
26:48Oh, is that a gun?
26:49Tiana, you talked.
26:50Okay, fine.
26:51Okay, just give me one.
26:52Give me a good one.
26:53I know you can do it.
26:54That looks like a slow drive.

27:03That looks like a lot.
27:04What is that?

27:07What's this?
27:08Heat?
27:09Yes.
27:10Oh, okay.
27:11Well.
27:12That's a bummer.
27:13That's a bummer.
27:14It would've been good.
27:15But no doubt for that.
27:16That looks like garbage.
27:17Straight.
27:18Thank you for keeping it real.
27:20Unfortunately, nobody won, but we're still all winners.
27:23We're all winners.
27:24Nah, we're losers.
27:25You're all winners, ladies.
27:26We're losers.

28:54You're watching Essence Now, and I'm your host, Makon Joufou.
28:57This week's Black Girl Magic Salute goes to Karis Rogers.
29:01After the 10-year-old was bullied for her dark skin, her older sister, Taylor Pollard, decided to post a series of Karis with this caption,
29:09My sister is only 10, but already royalty. Hashtag flexed into my complexion.
29:14The post not only went viral, it garnered the attention of Alicia Keys, who tweeted,
29:19I love this beautiful girl, and I love her mission. Keep shining.
29:23Rogers now has a clothing line appropriately called Flexed Into My Complexion,
29:27with plans to put the profits towards her college education.
29:30I know I'm pretty. I'm not going to let anyone tell me different.
29:36Sweet, beautiful Karis, we salute you.
29:39Remember, you can watch even more inspiring stories in our original Black Girl Magic docu-series at essence.com slash blackgirlmagic.
29:48All right. Earlier, we asked you in our viewer poll, how do you think America should combat white supremacy?
29:54And Kayla has been taking your comments all show long.
29:57Hey, Kayla, what are folks saying?
29:58Okay, so Kevin Loy says, be more proactive.
30:01Donna Love says they are terrorists and should be treated as such.
30:04Kevin Harris says, Trump is a divider of the country and ran a campaign doing just that.
30:08How can you expect Trump to heal anything when he resurrected white supremacists?
30:12So no mercy over here.
30:13Yeah. What do you think, Kayla? How do you think America should combat white supremacy?
30:18I definitely believe in exposing anyone who woke up this morning with the intent to harm and cause pain to anyone,
30:23especially if it's racially motivated. No sympathy. So I say expose them.
30:26Expose and shame. I support that a thousand percent.
30:29Well, thanks to Tashina Arnold, Tiana Paris, and all of today's guests for coming through.
30:34Now, remember to subscribe to our YouTube channel to see all of our videos
30:37and tune in next Tuesday at 3 p.m. Eastern for an all-new Essence Now.
