00:00You're watching Essence Now.
00:06I'm your host, Makon Dovu, and you may know our next guest for her big voice, even bigger
00:11personality.
00:12Please welcome Kay Michelle back to Essence Now.
00:14Hey, Kay Michelle.
00:15Hello, hello, hello.
00:16You look beautiful.
00:17Let's jump right into the music.
00:18You have a new album entitled Kimberley, The People I Used to Know.
00:22Now, what kind of revelations can we expect from this project?
00:24And who are the people that you used to know?
00:26A lot of people.
00:27A lot of people I used to know.
00:29I don't want to know them anymore.
00:32I try to take some type of lesson from everybody that I meet or see.
00:37So for me, it was like, you're at the crossroads as a woman.
00:42Like, who are you?
00:43What do you stand for?
00:45And how have your relationships of your past affected who you are now?
00:51So that's where this album came from.
00:53A lot of the songs are about people that I'm not angry with them.
00:57I'm not in hate.
00:59I'm just acknowledging, you know, how they affected me.
01:04So the pen on paper, people from your past, are they friends?
01:08Is it ex-boyfriends?
01:09Everybody.
01:10Everybody.
01:11Everybody.
01:11It's friends.
01:13It's boyfriends.
01:15It's business associates.
01:16It's people who make me feel a way.
01:20Like, they always say you can learn to forgive, but you never forget how people make you feel.
01:25So these people have made me feel some type of way within my life.
01:29What lessons have you learned, though, from those interactions?
01:33And is that captured on the album?
01:34The lesson is you need to find the lesson.
01:38Because it's kind of like you go through these things and no one quite can understand because they're not in your shoes.
01:44And you try to tell people your story so that they can understand and they can not be in your shoes.
01:50But a lot of times we're hard-headed and we have to go through it, you know, on our own.
01:54So I had to learn my own lessons.
01:57And that was that a lot of the stuff that people do, it's not about you.
02:04And that's a lot of the stuff that people do, it's not about you.
