00:01Ladies and gentlemen, the most exciting stage show you've ever seen!
00:05Janelle Snowden here with the original human beatbox.
00:08Hey! Hey! Hey!
00:09Doug E. Fresh.
00:10How many years has it been since you've been performing at the Essence Festival?
00:14Because I've lost count.
00:15I've been doing the Essence Festival for so long.
00:18Am I lying self?
00:19Clearly you're doing something right because they keep inviting you back, right?
00:22Yes, yes, yes. And we keep getting better and better and better.
00:25It's so much going into the 25th anniversary and I'm just so happy to be a part of it.
00:32This one here is going to be one to remember.
00:35Here we go! Here we go! Come on! Come on!
00:37You do more shows than most entertainers I know, more than 200 a year.
00:40I do a lot.
00:41You make sure that every July you clear those dates for Essence Festival. Why is that?
00:47If you are invited to go and be an artist at Essence, you are something special.
00:54Because there's a certain caliber, there's a certain level of integrity that you have to maintain when you're doing Essence.
01:02Like, don't come to me with that kind of show that you think you got away with over there.
01:08Because it's family.
01:09And family will tell you the truth.
01:10Essence is like, yo, this is me, baby.
01:12Don't front, I know you!
01:13So you feel how people are just joining together from all over the country.
01:18You know, and then you're listening to these powerful black women talking about different things from business to personal.
01:26The vibe, it just feels like, yo, this is the homecoming.
01:30This is what we've been waiting for.
01:32The weather's right.
01:33You see people walking through the street.
01:35You could be outside all night.
01:37Everybody having a good time.
01:38Cass is dancing.
01:39You got people playing the horns.
01:41I'm ready to get it popping right now!
01:43I can feel it though.
01:44You were painting that picture.
01:45I feel like I was there.
01:46I was feeling it when I was saying it.
01:48And this year is going to be even more incredible because we're going to acknowledge Frankie Beverly and Maze.
01:58His music is the essence of what Essence is about.
02:04You know, joy and pain.
02:06We are one.
02:07It's like black national anthems.
02:08Yeah, man.
02:09Before I let go.
02:10Hey baby, what's the name of this song?
02:12Before I let go.
02:14A lot of us concentrate on the main stage.
02:17And I like the main stage.
02:19I enjoy that.
02:20But I also love the super lounges because you're there intimately involved with an audience and they're right there in front of you.
02:28It makes your skills that much sharper.
02:30So there's so many creative performances that are going to be happening in the super lounge.
02:35Last year I did one with me, Kumo D, Yo-Yo, Mia X, Koudini, Black Sheep.
02:45It was a very special night.
02:49I want to talk about that beatbox moment on the main stage that just seemed like it was never going to end.
02:58Eight.
02:59Sixteen.
03:00Seventeen.
03:01Twenty-five.
03:02I stopped counting.
03:03You kind of shut it down.
03:04Well, thank you.
03:05When it's your turn, it's like someone passing you the baton and you have to run so that you can, you know, get to the finish line.
03:21Well, you ran.
03:22I was running.
03:23Give it up for Dougie Frye!
03:24Each time I do it, I'm always looking at, we got to take it to the next level.
03:37I'm getting excited again.
03:38I'm getting excited again.
03:39I'm getting excited.
03:40You know what I mean?
03:41Like, I'm ready to turn it up.
03:43To see Dougie turn it up, catch him on the main stage July 5th, 6th, and 7th.
03:47And in the Super Lounge, July 6th.
