Transcript
00:00Hey everybody, I'm Janelle Snowden, and in case you hadn't heard,
00:02the Essence Festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary this 4th of July weekend in New Orleans.
00:08So we thought it was only right to grab a few folks who've been there to tell you what you might be in store for this year.
00:14If you've never done the Essence Festival, you really do need to talk to a veteran to get-
00:19And baby listen, you have an Essence Festival guide, you need to holler at one ass, cuz he can tell you what to do.
00:23You have your daytime party, then you have your nighttime party, then you have your after hour party.
00:26So the key, I know for me, comfortable shoes.
00:29Comfortable, key, comfort, cute though.
00:33Now when we say comfortable, don't come to Essence with sweats and old teeth, pull it together.
00:38Ladies, you do need changes of clothes, because you will sweat out your good stuff.
00:44Be careful with them shoes, cuz you will be walking, and them feet will be talking.
00:49Facts.
00:50You understand?
00:51I think wearing flats is very important.
00:54Ladies, I'm just warning you, but do what you want to do.
00:57What else?
00:58Hydration.
00:594th of July, New Orleans.
01:00Absolutely.
01:01Cool, comfortable clothing is very important.
01:04Don't worry about your calories, honey, because you will be walking it off.
01:08We have to tell them about these cars, okay?
01:10Let's explain.
01:11This car situation, right?
01:12Be prepared to walk.
01:13Yes.
01:14Enjoy yourself at Essence, guilt-free, because you're gonna lose every calorie.
01:18You will.
01:19You will dance it off.
01:20You will walk it off.
01:21Because the streets are small.
01:22Yes.
01:23There are only so many Ubers.
01:24That's right.
01:25You need to do UberPool.
01:26If you're gonna do it.
01:27UberPool or pedicab.
01:28And the pedicab, we did that quite a bit.
01:29Make sure you're not driving too much.
01:31You don't want to do the driving all the time.
01:33Let somebody else do the driving.
01:35You keep it popping, let somebody else do the driving.
01:38That's right.
01:39And enjoy yourself.
01:40Really, that's what it's all about.
01:42Enjoying yourself.
01:43Letting yourself free.
01:44Don't think so much about everything that you gotta get back to.
01:49Stay in the moment.
01:50You know, stay in present time.
01:52That is the one weekend where every face you see is smiling with one of those, what are
01:58those?
01:59Janelle, one of those hurricane things, right?
02:00Yes.
02:01Walking around with a little hurricane tip thing.
02:02Yes.
02:03And having a great time.
02:04No incidents.
02:05It just really is like the premiere experience for people of color.
02:11Any other Essence survival tips from a veteran like yourself?
02:14Oh, man.
02:15I think that sometimes it's so hot out there, you don't think you need a jacket.
02:19But you might need a jacket because the air conditioner works very well inside.
02:23Oh, in the Superdome.
02:24Yeah.
02:25And there's so many things that Essence is doing now outside.
02:28Block parties.
02:29Beauty carnivals.
02:30There's so many things that are happening.
02:32So, you want to be there.
02:34You want to enjoy yourself.
02:35Bring somebody that you feel good about.
02:38You know, and somebody you know that's going to have fun.
02:41Don't bring no hater.
