Essence Chief Content and Creative Officer Moana Luu tells us what to expect from the September edition of Essence Magazine.
Transcript
00:00It's been nearly two months since our 20th essence was created.
00:13In many ways, we are still in a celebration mode.
00:25The start of each month offers a fresh perspective with new possibilities.
00:30For this ninth month of 2019, we are focusing on the freedom of self, rebirth of spirit, and of course, a love of style.
00:39After previewing our inaugural fashion house in New Orleans,
00:42we can wait to bring the experience to life once again, this time during New York Fashion Week.
00:48You will see that we split up our look.
00:50We've upgraded the essence experience by way of our digital platform.
00:54From videos of our photoshoots and international travels, to our roster of podcasts, which feature interviews from our color stories.
01:02Our September issue, which I would like to think as a fashion bible, is a reflection of those feelings and the perfect time to unveil our real desire.
01:12Our style, our culture, are not trends. Our influence leads by geography and influences the larger culture.
01:20We are proud to illustrate this issue with models, designers, and photographers from South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.
01:27We shine the spotlights on model Khadija Douara, who is an Egyptian Malian descent, and her vision in early jam.
01:35And model actress Lena Bou, the first transgender woman of color to star in a film premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
01:42And we choose Serena Williams for the color.
01:45Most recently, we've watched her life expand as a family woman and entrepreneur.
01:50Serena has always loved passion so much that when she launched her independently own, self-titled closing line,
01:57she made it her mission to create styles that flatter women of all shapes and size and promoting body positivity.
02:03It's both as bold and necessary to move, one which speaks to Serena's role as a leader on and off the tennis court.
02:10Essence is not only a global brand, but a powerful movement.
02:16We are as proud to continue creating waves as we are to be making strides throughout the world.
02:21And it's our honor to have you to be part of this journey.
