00:00So I used to be in sales and had quit my job and went traveling around the world
00:04for like six months right and so I don't know why it'll flex, but I'm okay.
00:18Hi, I'm Marquita Harris, Work & Money Editor for Essence and today we've got another Best in Black
00:23owned. I'm standing in front of Hill House in Best Eye, Brooklyn and today we're going to talk to the
00:28owners about what it took to launch this wellness space.
00:39Hi, so I'm sitting next to Darian Hall and Elisa Shenko of Hill House. Hi guys. Hi, how are you doing?
00:46When did Hill House open and what is Hill House for those that don't know?
00:50We are a wellness space. We have a wellness bar, we have daily yoga meditation classes,
00:57workshops, private practitioner services, so everything from acupuncture to therapy to massage
01:04and it's really all different healing modalities under one roof. What kind of inspired the opening
01:08of it? What's the backstory? You know, I started thinking about having some type of space that
01:12incorporated therapy and I knew Elisa was already incorporating therapy and yoga and meditation
01:18into her life and trusted her opinion on this, you know, this thing I was, you know,
01:22that was keeping me up at night and reached out to her to kind of get her opinion on this and it
01:28started this conversation about it being much bigger than just a space that incorporated therapy.
01:33How much money did it take to kind of do a business like this? Yeah, so I think in terms of,
01:38you know, the money aspect, you know, it was a big decision because it's not like we had,
01:42you know, initial outside investments or anything like that, right? And so,
01:45so this was going to be, you know, the little bit of savings that I personally had that I was going
01:50to be putting into the business. So it was like, um, so I, I cashed my 401k to like open a business,
01:57right? And so I think I had about 500, 500,000 total, but like, if you touch your 401k,
02:03you really lose like 50% or, you know, right, right off the top. Like people don't understand when
02:08you're making a brick and mortar, like the licenses that you have to deal with, getting an architect,
02:13dealing with a contracting team, project managing the contracting team, what you need to purchase
02:18materials. It's like so much. How can everyone learn more about Healhaus? Yeah. Healhaus.com
02:26is, um, H-E-A-L-H-A-U-S.com is where all of our information is, but also follow us on our social
02:34media channels, which is just at Healhaus.com. H-E-A-L-H-A-U-S. All right. Thank you guys so much
02:40for having me. Thank you for having us. This was so awesome.
02:50Thank you guys so much for tuning in to another Best in Black owned. You can check out the rest of
02:54the series on Essence.com and thank you. A special thank you to Elisa and Darian. Thanks so much.
