The Story Behind De Lor Cakery | Built from A Need
Transcript
00:00I am Keisha Thompson, the Cake Executive Officer of Delore Cakery.
00:06What was missing for me that allowed me to start creating and formulize Delore Cakery was I knew how to
00:15bake cakes, but I didn't know how to make them pretty.
00:17I didn't know how to decorate cakes.
00:19And so I walked into a Joann's fabric store while I was living in Georgia, and I saw the sign
00:27for cake decorating classes.
00:29I applied, registered, and took a series of classes from beginner to advanced.
00:36And my instructor pulled me to the side and said, Keisha, you're a very fast learner.
00:42Would you like to come on board part-time and teach all of the kids cake decorating classes and cake
00:49decorating parties?
00:51And I said, absolutely, I would love to.
00:54And she said, it doesn't feel right, but it's fun.
00:58You get to work with the kids.
01:00And aside from getting paid, we do send you tools every month that you get to promote and use in
01:07class.
01:08And so that's what catapulted me into learning how to decorate cakes professionally.
01:16It was during COVID, in September 2022, when Essence launched their Power Tool pitch competition.
01:28And I applied and I was selected.
01:30And we were each assigned a coach to work with for, I believe, four weeks before we went live and
01:38pitched.
01:39And he said to me, Keisha, this is bigger than you.
01:44It's about the community and the culture.
01:51And you need to tap into the culture if you want your brand to stand out and be around.
01:59He's like, you have family from the Caribbean.
02:02And you have family from here.
02:04Why are you not pouring that into your products?
02:08And so it was from there, it was at that moment that I realized it was bigger than me.
02:16As well as today, actually.
02:18We're now available on WeLoveUs.shop
