00:00I'm Layla Hathaway and this is my music, my life. Pretty much everything I've been writing over the
00:09last 25 years has been inspired by personal experiences but a lot of the
00:13songs on my album Self-Portrait are super autobiographical. So a song like
00:19Little Girl. I had the music and I was hanging out with Rahsaan Patterson. I said
00:23come to my car listen to this. He said just a little girl in a big world and the
00:30whole song came from that lyric and that melody and that inspiration.
00:39That song pretty much takes you on a journey of my childhood. I'm talking
00:44about my mother and my dad, my mom's car and the food that she cooks and how she
00:49raised us and my dad and his hats. Really, the experience of growing up with so
00:55much color and music around me.
01:03Hiding in the shadow of the light. People always ask, you know, is it like, what's it
01:09like being in your father's shadow? And I never really considered it a shadow. It's
01:14always been a light. So I recognize how it could have foreshadowed my
01:19coming, but I always have seen it as a really bright light.
