00:00Ariana Grande is calling out double standards when it comes to criticism surrounding her
00:04voice.
00:06The singer, who is set to star in John M. Chu's Wicked movie musical as Glinda alongside
00:10Cynthia Erivo, has been called out online for changing her voice for the film, with
00:15many noting she still continues to speak in her Glinda voice.
00:19After she appeared on Penn Badgley's Pod Crushed, the singer addressed the mockery
00:23on TikTok over her different speaking voices.
00:26She wrote at the time,
00:27I intentionally change my vocal placement, high or low, often depending on how much singing
00:32I'm doing.
00:33I've always done this.
00:34Bye."
00:35Now, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Grande reflected on the conversation surrounding
00:38her voice change for the role.
00:40There is a part of the world that isn't familiar with what it takes to transform your
00:44voice, whether it's singing, or taking on a different dialect for a role, or doing
00:48a character voice for something.
00:50Grande also called out the double standard that exists when a male actor can alter his
00:53voice for a role.
00:55When it's a male actor that does it, it's acclaimed.
00:57There are definitely jokes that are made as well, but it's always after being led with
01:01praise.
01:02Oh wow, he was so lost in the role, and that's just a part of the job, really."
01:06She added,
01:07Tale as old as time being a woman in this industry, you are treated differently, and
01:10you are under a microscope in a way that some people aren't.
01:14Austin Butler was another star who notably got attention for his voice change for his
01:18Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley in Elvis.
01:22He said at the time,
01:23I often liken it to when somebody lives in another country for a long time, and I had
01:27three years where that was my only focus in life, so I'm sure that there's just pieces
01:31of my DNA that will always be linked in that way."
