00:37You know, I just gotta have some quiet, you know, just a little bit just so I can kind

00:46You know, I have to allow myself to be open-minded and free.
00:55For me, when I'm writing, whether it be a love song or a heartbreak song, you know, whatever
00:59the emotion that I'm giving, I have to just kind of recall the best feeling of those moments
01:03and I have to dive into it so that I can kind of paint the picture.
01:07I've been through a lot and I'm not afraid to talk about it.

01:26When three years old I was dancing and trying to sing MC Hammer.
01:30I went to Oakland School for the Arts.
01:36I remember the first time coming to the school to see them do a play.
01:41One of the students got up and sang Donny Hathaway.
01:44At that point I knew that I wanted to sing.
01:47After I graduated from there I think at that point for me it was music or nothing.
01:52I had a lot of odd jobs before I started my music career.
02:00I tried working with kids, you know, teaching them music but, you know, I had this whole plan
02:06when I came into class.
02:07I'm like, man, I got my class.
02:08I'm going to dress up in my suit, have my tie, everything, briefcase with nothing in it.
02:13But, you know, it just looked the part and I showed up, you know, they dancing on tables.
02:17They all over the place.
02:18Like, look, I got an assignment for everybody, you know, I want everybody to find your favorite
02:23song and I want you to perform it.
02:27And it totally blew up in my face because nobody's sung any songs.
02:31There's a lot of words that I don't think I should have let them say.
02:39I have nothing but the utmost respect for Rafael Sadie.
02:41I don't say I have a lot of mentors because I don't but Ray is definitely one of those people.
02:46He always taught me that the greats don't celebrate their work.
02:50Not letting the life be what's leading me.

03:18from Oakland, so how could it be so negative?
03:21I put me into it and I'm a product of my city.
03:24You know, Oakland is, Oakland is my sound.
03:26When I step on Essence Festival stage, when I step in that room, it means everything to me.
03:38Like, I want to be one of those people that's featured in Essence.
03:41Like, look up to this person.
03:43This person is somebody who stands for something.
03:46This person is somebody that is not doing the trendy thing that everybody is doing to
03:52be cool, but rather just being himself.

04:04That's what I plan on being there, man, just a sponge, just soaking up everything.
