00:00Justine, Justine.
00:06What's up?
00:08How are you?
00:09I'm good.
00:10I'm great, actually.
00:11Yeah.
00:12So welcome to Black Women in Music.
00:13Is this your first time here?
00:14This is actually my second time.
00:15I came last year, but I'm probably not as cool as I might be this year, so.
00:19Yeah.
00:20So we're celebrating 45 years of Essence Magazine and also 45 years of Black Women in Music.
00:26And I want to ask you, who do you think are some of the most influential Black women in music in the last 45 years?
00:31Some of the most influential women, definitely the ones being honored tonight.
00:35Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, Brandi's performing.
00:38She's definitely a huge part of Black music.
00:41And Beyonce, I feel like, is definitely another huge part.
00:44She's so hardworking and dedicated.
00:46She's always, like, keeping with the times and changing.
00:48So I feel like that, you know, this is just a great event, just honoring Black women.
00:53I feel like we don't get honored enough, and so I'm so honored to be a part of this and to be here.
00:59And who's the woman in music that has most influenced you?
01:02The music?
01:03The woman in music who's most influenced me would probably have to be Beyonce.
01:08She's definitely someone that I look up to every day when I wake up, you know.
01:12There's a quote like, be you, but be more like Beyonce.
01:16Like, she's so hardworking, and I just, every day I wake up, my mom's like, you're not being your Beyonce.
01:23You're not being your Beyonce.
01:24She's definitely, like, a goal.
01:25Like, she's like the epitome of hardworking.
01:27What about her, besides the hard work, what about Beyonce really inspires you?
01:31Her voice.
01:32Her voice is always on point, no matter what.
01:35Even, like, even if she, like, messes up, she comes even harder.
01:39She never lets anyone, like, any bad press or anything that anyone says to her affect what she's doing.
01:47And, you know, as we celebrate tonight Jill Scott, do you have any favorite Jill Scott songs?
01:52My favorite Jill Scott song is, um, let's take a long walk around the park after dark.
02:00That's definitely something, my mom played that song all the time, like, growing up.
02:03So it's, like, stuck in my head.
02:04And, yeah.
02:05Oh, the youth.
02:06My mom played that song when I was growing up.
02:09Yeah.
02:10It's not right.
02:11I know, I know.
02:12That's kind of, like, how, like, that's kind of how I got into the music industry.
02:15My mom's been in the industry for, like, 20 years.
02:17So I grew up around, and just her playing music just inspired me to be an R&B artist today.
02:21And we are looking forward to watching your career and you blossom.
02:26So thanks so much for stopping by.
