ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood: Lorraine Toussaint
Transcript
00:00I am here with the beautiful and talented Ms. Lorraine Toussaint. How are you doing?
00:10Terrific. Wonderful to be here.
00:12Tell me, what keeps you coming back to this event, black women in Hollywood, year after year?
00:17You know, this is Essence. We grew up on Essence. Essence was the Bible for black women.
00:21And so they have continued to reinvent themselves as we've evolved, not just for my generation, but all the ones that are coming along.
00:28And so this is a celebration of black women, but also of my peers, of the generations of actresses that are coming after us.
00:38It's just, it's a love fest.
00:40And what does it feel like to be honored this year?
00:43You know, I usually come to this every year and I sit in the back and I cheer and I appreciate it.
00:48Now it's odd to be up front this year and lovely, and lovely, because I'm very proud of this piece of work, too.
00:57We've been taking bets throughout the day because we know every year when we all get in the room, we start sharing our stories, somebody starts crying or has the tearjerker moment.
01:06Who do you think is going to be the cause of that this year? Will it be you?
01:09Oh, no. Oh, no. Uzo, I hope. I hope Uzo does all the talking.
01:14And I have to ask, I'm a huge fan of Orange is the New Black. You know, you got any sneak peeks or tips as to what's about to happen? I mean, can you give us anything?
01:22You know I can't tell you that. They have to kill me if I told you that. But I will tell you one thing.
01:27Yes.
01:28The season has been found.
01:31You heard it here. That's all you're going to give me.
01:34That's all. That's it.
01:36Angie, we're celebrating 45 years of Essence, celebrating our past, our present and where we're going, inspirational moments, things that empowered us.
01:44What inspired you to join this craft and to power through it and to evolve?
01:51You know, when I see young women like Gugu, when I see Uzo and Danielle, it's the future. Sorry. I've had a cold. Oh, it's all right. But I'm part of a legacy of women now. That's extraordinary.
02:10Thank you so very much for your time. I'll let you grab some water and get settled in the ballroom because they're about to usher everyone in. So thank you so much. It was a pleasure to meet you.
02:17And we don't want to be late.
02:18We do not want to be late. No, we do not want to be late.
