Transcript
00:00Estelle, welcome to Essence.
00:07We're so happy you're here and guest editing the site.
00:10Yeah.
00:11Yes.
00:12We know a lot about your music and, you know, your performances.
00:15But I want to know about your girl, Estelle.
00:18What do you want to know?
00:19Yes.
00:20And our readers want to know.
00:21Right, right.
00:22A typical week for you, like, what is it like?
00:24I'm never at home.
00:26I'm always traveling.
00:27I do gigs consistently.
00:29Like, I'm always performing somewhere consistently.
00:31So when I'm on Twitter and I'm like, this week I was in Croatia.
00:34And next week I was in Indonesia.
00:36Like, it's real.
00:37I can tell you what airplane and what airplane amenities I like
00:40better than I can tell you what type of bed I like.
00:43You know?
00:44Well, I used to live in Brooklyn.
00:45And now I live in, I'm moving to L.A.
00:47You're sleeping in L.A.?
00:49No.
00:50I've been here for five years.
00:53Now, you know what it is?
00:55It's part work, part focus.
00:58Like, I need to, like, make this new album come quicker.
01:01And I find, I find that, like, being, traveling as much as I do.
01:04When I'm home, I'm home for, like, two days.
01:06So my apartment was, like, a big storage unit.
01:08You know?
01:09And I figured that when I'm home I wouldn't actually feel like I'm on holiday.
01:11So I figured I would try a year out there with the sunshine and see what it looks like even when I'm home.
01:16And I get to record.
01:17And everyone's recording out there now for some reason, too.
01:19So I love my life.
01:21My absolute everything about it.
01:24I'm blessed.
01:25The amount of things I've been through to even get to this stage.
01:28You know?
01:29And I feel like I'm still hustling.
01:30I'm still working hard.
01:31And then I get to, like, you know, and there's times when I'm just tired.
01:36And I wish anyone and everyone would think for me, but no one can.
01:39That's the only slight downside is that you always have to be on.
01:43There's no off.
01:45What's your favorite place to kind of kick back and relax?
01:48I've been to Florence, Italy a good couple times.
01:51That's my absolute favorite place on the planet.
01:53It's beautiful.
01:54So I want to finish off by asking you some questions from our Facebook readers.
01:58Okay.
01:59So Tanisha writes, if you could go back in time and give yourself any advice, what would it be?
02:04Don't be scared.
02:07There's a lot of things that I wish I'd have been like, well, maybe I should have just tried it.
02:11Or discussed it further before I said no.
02:14You know?
02:15And now my whole outlook is like, man, look, if it's been presented more than once to you,
02:19maybe don't turn it down.
02:20Maybe have that discussion, you know?
02:22But, you know, always check it out before you shut it down.
02:25Unless your spirit says to you, no, don't do it.
02:28You know?
02:29Because it's always going to, you're going to be fine.
02:30I'm going to be okay.
02:31Jasmine asks, when you're feeling down, where do you go for inspiration?
02:34I go to Ella Fitzgerald.
02:36And I feel like, boy, this has been the longest week ever.
02:40And I'm in my house, and her art is super loud all day and all night.
02:44It does something for my entire mood.
02:46Like, my entire spirit is lifted when I hear her voice.
02:50She's one of the artists that decided to do it.
02:53When I was like 13, I was like, I think I'm supposed to sing.
02:57I think I'm supposed to do this music because I really like this.
03:00This makes me happy.
03:01Janine asks, as such a creative person and artist, what do you want your legacy to be?
03:06Art.
03:07Pure art at every turn.
03:10Art, whether in fashion, art, whether in music, art, whether in beauty, art, whether in creativity.
03:18Ecist, it has to be something that people want to see 10 to 15 years from now.
03:22It can't be some of-the-moment stuff.
03:25You know.
03:26Every single...
03:27To me, Andre 3000's a classic example of that.
03:31Whatever verse he gets on, whatever song he's on, he's saying something.
03:35something so to me that's the way I approach everything I do from the
03:39jewelry line with Rachel Roy to you know any collaboration anyone I work with
03:43whatever we see whatever I put out you have to want to see that five years from
03:46now it can't just be for now well thank you so much and we're gonna see you at
03:51the Essence Music Festival I'm so geeked all right so come to my show on Sunday
03:56the 8th okay it's gonna be fun
