Escape to New Orleans Carrollton
Transcript
00:00Check it out. This is Oak Street. It's like the main street here in New Orleans. It's pretty cool.
00:29Ice cream. Let's stop and get some ice cream. I can do some ice cream. That's all I need. Some cold ice cream and then we can explore the rest of the wall. What's this one? This one? That's gold brick. It's a vanilla base with chocolate chips, chocolate fudge, and pecans. Let me try that. Everywhere I go, I gotta try some strawberries. Let me see what your flavor is. I've never had gold bricks before. Yeah, it's based on a New Orleans candy. They usually serve it around Easter time.
00:59Matter of fact, that's a really beautiful painting. Actually, that is a guy named Frenchie. He actually has an art gallery down the street if you want to check it out. What do you think? Yeah, let's go check that out.
01:12All right.
01:14Hey, are you Frenchie?
01:36Frenchie. I am Frenchie. Yeah, you're right. Well, welcome to my gallery. Feel free to look around. The whole place is open. All the paintings you'll see are all done of different live bands and stuff like that.
01:46I do sporting paintings like that. I do live event paintings. But the thing I like painting the most are the brass bands here in New Orleans. And the second lines. Stuff like that. You ever been to a second line? Never been to a second line. Come on. I can't really just describe it in one term. You kind of got to go to the second line.
01:52I do sporting paintings like that, I do live event paintings, you know, but the thing I

02:15the second line and make the effort, you know, you'll feel it and you'll answer that question
02:21yourself.

03:20Oh, that's my people, man.
03:21We must be family.
03:22Good to see y'all.
03:23What's up, guys?
03:24Oh, nothing.
03:25It's just out here, you know.
03:26Second lining.
03:27Second lining.
03:28Second lining is a celebratory line that happens in the streets of New Orleans, where we have
03:33like the grand marshals come out, and then we have the brass bands playing that brass
03:38instrument.
03:39So second line comes from the culture, which comes from Haiti, with the rah-rah.
03:44So a rah-rah is a procession where they would play horns and the people would walk behind
03:48them.
03:49And your people who follow the second line are called your second liners.
03:53And so they go out into the streets, and they go like maybe six or nine miles.
03:58Okay.
03:59Let me show you some second line steps.
04:00Okay.
04:01So we got this heel or toe thing where we kick out our foot and bring it back.
04:04Okay.
04:05And we're working back and forth.
04:06And so then we just find our little rhythm to what we're feeling.
04:09And then the thing I like to do when I'm second lining is like to let the people look
04:14at me.
04:15I throw my hands up in the air.
04:16Okay.
04:17Like this.
04:18So let me see you put them hands up.
04:19Yeah.
04:20Because you're coming up the street.
04:21Oh, let them know.
04:22Oh, yeah.
04:23Like, look at me.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Look at me.
04:26We like to change it up and do some turns every now and then.
04:29Second line.
04:30Nothing but a second line.
