Dr. Safiya talks knowing CBD.
Transcript
00:00Thank you so much for having me Essence Wellness House. My name is Dr. Safia Lin. I practice down
00:10here in South Florida. I'm an emergency medicine physician, but I also prescribe medical marijuana
00:16to several patients down here. Medical marijuana got approved in 2016 in South Florida, so we're
00:23happy to be able to offer it to the state and educate the entire world about the purpose of
00:27CBD and also cannabis. Welcome to our segment today for The Doctor Says. My name is Dr. Lin,
00:34and this is Ask Dr. Lin's segment. First question, we're going to throw it to Jamila all the way from
00:40Miami, Florida. What is the easiest way to start trying CBD? So there's several different ways to
00:47start trying CBD. As we all know, we've seen tinctures, we've seen gummies, we've seen vitamins,
00:53a little bit of everything. Just know that it comes in an oil form or a powder form, and those
01:01two extractions can be found in lotions, creams, bath bombs, a little bit of everything, right?
01:07My personal recommendation is to start trying it orally. When you start, start with maybe 25
01:13milligrams, and the goal is to build up to whatever your intentional goal is, right? So let's think about
01:19that. If we want to achieve relief for insomnia, I'm going to start with the lowest possible dose,
01:25which will be 25 milligrams, whether that's in a pill form, a capsule form, or a tincture form.
01:31And then I can build up until I achieve relief from my insomnia. If that's 50 milligrams a day you
01:37need to take, if that's 75 milligrams a day you need to take, every one is different. Depends on our body
01:43weight, depends on what other medication we're taking. So all of that needs to be considered in our past
01:48medical history in terms of what is the appropriate dosage for you. Remember, dosing CBD is an art.
01:55There is no FDA approved way to come up with a formula to tell you what is best for you. It is
02:00a customizable thing. So you have to decide with your intention and with mindfulness, what's the best
02:07way to start dosing CBD, right? I recommend oral, start low, build up, and just use as little as you
02:13need. Because remember, this isn't expensive. This is definitely an investment in your health.
02:17Thank you so much, Jamila. Let's move on to our next question.
02:23All right. I've got a question from Naomi in New York City. Thank you so much, Naomi,
02:29for submitting this question. Can cannabis cure chronic illnesses? And if so, which one?
02:36That's an awesome question. Can cannabis cure chronic illnesses? Let's think about this.
02:41When we say cure, I don't see cannabis curing cancer. I don't see cannabis curing seizure.
02:50What I do see are treatments, right? So what I want to clarify in the vocabulary is that it's not
02:57curing and getting rid of the entire disease, but it's an amazing form for treatment, right? So when
03:03we think about alternatives to prescription medication that's available to us now, just know that cannabis
03:10can and should be one of your number one choices to consider. When you think about the low risk of
03:16side effects and all of the medicinal benefits of it and the easiest ways to take it into your system
03:22and ingest it, know that cannabis is an option for you and you should always discuss these options with
03:27your primary care doctor. As I mentioned before, you can't just use things without any guidance or any
03:34direction. You want to make sure that you're doing things under the supervision of your physician who
03:39is treating you for other medical conditions, and there's nothing that's fighting or combating each
03:43other, right? Let's move on to our last question of the segment. Cheryl from Olympia Fields, Illinois.
03:51Is cannabis good for pain relief during pregnancy and postpartum? That's an excellent question.
03:57For all my women who are getting ready to deliver and going through the next nine months,
04:02cannabis is an amazing source, but it just not, has not been tested enough in order to determine if
04:08it is safe and best to use in pregnancy. Thank you so much. Welcome to Ask Dr. Lin and this is a
04:14Dr. Sed segment on Essence Wellness House.
