00:00wellness house it's good to see you this weekend it's good to be back my name is Dr. Columbus
00:11Batiste I am an interventional cardiologist aka the healthy heart doc on social media and I always
00:17enjoy these sessions because wellness is the key and so one of our viewers has a question it's L
00:23in New Orleans my family's from New Orleans I grew up on red beans and rice and hidden down
00:27there in Canal Street before heading out to California she says my mother and grandmother
00:33had heart attacks well I get one too how can I prevent this well L I'll tell you you're not the
00:39only one who has this family DNA of heart attacks we know it's the number one killer of men and women
00:45and what we know is that in African American community we see an increased amount of heart
00:52attacks plagued throughout our society right and so what we know is that oftentimes it's not just
00:58your DNA it's just not what's passed on genetically but it's also what's passed along in the cookbooks
01:04now I've seen some of the cookbooks I've seen some of the recipes from down in New Orleans right and
01:10those that food is amazing but what we know is that when we move away from foods that have been
01:17shown to help our bodies fruits and vegetables and whole grains in other words red beans and rice
01:23that means collard greens without the ham hocks what that means is the sweet potatoes without the
01:28marshmallows and the added sugar those are the foods that help you the watermelon the the fruits all the
01:34berries all those things are phenomenal for helping your body that can help us fuel the fire to fight
01:42disease that's what we're trying to do so you actually can prevent this by taking care of yourself and
01:48I've said this in times gone by in the past self actually means sleeping right taking time for
01:54spirituality and that mindfulness that's there e for exercise and moving a little bit more l for love
02:01as opposed to hate that's something we're lacking inside of our society in this world and f is for food
02:07real food food that decays food that will will savor in your mouth that your great great grandparents
02:13who recognizes what you want so there is power and no this does not have to be your destiny l
02:19so I look forward to you making the changes that you're looking to make here's we have a second
02:23question this one comes from crystal in chicago it says is it true that fast food increases my chance
02:31of a heart attack and if so why and I would say fast food is not bad you know as when I was a kid
02:38growing up my mom there were five of us so she made fast food her own way she made a batch of burritos
02:43a batch of red beans a batch of different things and put it in the freezer and our job was to take it out
02:48and heat it real fast that was fast food but now what we're doing is we're going through these drive-thrus
02:54these quick service that are high in salt sugar and fat that plague our communities and that are
03:01devoid of fresh fruits and vegetables and we eat these things thinking that we're saving time but
03:07what we're really doing is we're cutting our time on this earth and so we have to be careful about
03:12those things so I would encourage you to engage in fast food but fast food that's prepared at home
03:17fast food that has natural ingredients fast food that's going to help energize your body
03:23by doing this you can actually stay away from people like me you stay away from docs who are
03:29looking to do procedures you stay away from docs who are giving you meds unless you have to be on it
03:34that now you take your power back and you fuel the fire that helps you fight disease
03:40fuel the fire that helps you fight social change
