01:24he's in pittsburgh completing a surgical residency at the local hospital megan has noticed leon around
01:31the hotel where she works he's a long-term resident there being a doctor at that stage of one's career
01:38keeps a person busy if you can afford to live in a hotel and avoid the upkeep of a house or an
01:45apartment why not leon is charming and the two hit it off a handsome surgeon would be a great
01:53second act for megan not long after megan finalizes her divorce and she and leon become a couple
02:02later that year leon convinces megan to relocate with him to houston leon's surgical residency in
02:13pittsburgh didn't really work out but he has a new job at methodist hospital in houston so the
02:20couple moves to texas leon's family is in houston where his mother is a prominent attorney so he has
02:29a lot of support there megan gets a job at a hotel in the city and becomes close with leon's family
02:36it's an exciting new chapter in their lives but leon's job in houston doesn't work out
02:44and he's let go from the hospital in 2015 leon is having trouble completing his surgical residency
02:51and the stress is weighing on him in 2016 he has to file for bankruptcy leon relies on megan to pay
03:02their rent and bills and his mother to pay his other expenses it's not exactly the impressive life of a
03:09doctor that he had imagined for himself and he takes it out on megan throughout 2016 leon grows
03:19increasingly manipulative and abusive toward his girlfriend leon's behavior is shockingly erratic
03:27he screams throws things and threatens to burn the apartment down if megan ever tries to leave him
03:35at one point he even threatens her with a glass domestic abuse is particularly troubling because
03:44it can be so unpredictable emotions are heightened and things can quickly escalate out of control
03:53and because it happens behind closed doors it's often not easy for law enforcement to intervene
04:00megan starts thinking seriously about leaving leon but she doesn't make a move yet but in january 2017
04:10the scales are tipped on january 12 when megan comes home from her work leon digs into her he yells
04:19that he's tired of her attitude and pissy face and that he will not put up with her crap
04:24megan quickly leaves the house but when leon calls to apologize she agrees to come back
04:32and as happens too often in domestic situations things escalate leon follows megan to the bathroom
04:41he starts throwing personal items around and threatening that his family will ruin her
04:50when megan starts screaming leon grabs her face with his hand and squeezes until he busts open her lip
04:59megan flees the apartment and takes refuge with leon's brother and sister-in-law leon's sister-in-law
05:11is close friends with megan she sees a handprint on megan's face and her bleeding lip and takes her in
05:18a few days later a few days later megan calls the police to report the assault with leon's pattern
05:25of abusive behavior this kind of incident is something the police have to take seriously
05:31at this point she knows that the relationship is over for good and she's relieved
05:38leon however is not getting the message
05:44leon tracks megan down and shows up at the house he pounds on the door screaming that he knows she's in
05:52there megan is terrified and hides in a closet the entire time but leon isn't giving up so easily
06:01leon insists he wants megan back he leaves her flowers he calls her repeatedly he even gets other
06:08people to call her megan takes out an order of protection against him but that doesn't slow him down
06:15one bit persistence can be a good thing but when it tips over into stalking it's a big red flag
06:24for someone to consistently violate an order of protection can be a sign that that person is
06:32emotionally unstable and definitely dangerous leon's stalking behavior proves that megan was right to
06:40leave him now she just needs him to leave her alone
06:44megan relocates to an unregistered room at the hotel where she works
06:52but leon's harassment only grows more intense on january 23rd leon hides outside waiting for megan to
07:03leave the building when she gets into her car and drives away he follows her eventually megan notices
07:12leon behind her and calls the police
07:15since megan has an order of protection against him they have to be cautious
07:22megan starts driving in circles hoping the police will arrive on the scene before anything escalates
07:29but leon is one step ahead of her leon drives in front of her cutting her off he gets out of his car
07:39and starts yelling that she doesn't know what she's missing it's terrifying for megan
07:47she turns her car around and hightails it in the other direction
07:58three days later the police catch up with leon they question him about the incident on january 12th
08:05which megan had reported as an assault leon admits to putting his hand over megan's mouth during
08:12arguments but he claims that he was just trying to calm her down and he concedes that it was probably
08:17not a good idea for him to have done that but now leon is worried leon is concerned that if there are
08:26any criminal charges against him it might interfere with him getting his medical license
08:32and it will definitely bring shame to his family so he decides that he needs to find out if there have
08:41been any charges filed against him leon goes to the office of a local criminal lawyer where
08:48he meets a young woman named laura who works there at her car leon mounts his usual charm offensive
08:56laura checks the records of the county clerk and determines that no there are no pending charges
09:03against him for leon it's a relief for sure but then he realizes that this might be an opportunity
09:11maybe laura can help but leon's request isn't quite as clear cut as he thinks it is
09:18he asks laura to approach megan on his behalf to help him get her back or if that doesn't work
09:25can laura get megan to leave town or if that doesn't work can laura get somebody to grab megan
09:32put her in a car and he would take care of the rest and he offers to provide a syringe to help
09:38to say that it's a disturbing escalation would be an understatement it's a fine line between love and
09:48hate does leon want megan back or does he want her gone for good laura is understandably freaked out
09:57by leon's request but we all know how persistent leon can be he keeps asking and asking until she agrees
10:05to phone a friend of hers who she thinks might be able to help
10:12on february 1st the authorities in houston file assault charges for the january 12th attack against
10:20megan now to leon it's more important than ever that he make this whole thing go away quickly not
10:29long after leon finally gets the call he's been waiting for a man named zach reaches out he's a
10:36friend of a friend of laura's and he's heard that leon is looking for a hitman
10:47leon jacob and megan varakas moved to houston in 2014 where leon is completing a surgical residency
10:55when leon's violent behavior grows out of control megan leaves him and takes out a restraining order
11:05undeterred leon continues to pursue megan hoping to win her back until he realizes that the assault
11:12charge against him might interfere with his medical license now to leon it's more important than ever
11:21that he makes this whole thing go away quickly in early february leon gets a call from a man named
11:30zach who might be able to help him out zach spent 12 years in the military but lately he's had some
11:38trouble with the law he's out on bail on a charge of possession of stolen property he offers leon his
11:46services and the two set up a meeting zach instructs leon to bring two thousand five hundred dollars in
11:53cash he wants to see just how serious leon is about silencing his ex at the meeting leon explains that
12:03megan is the complaining witness in an assault case against him that is destroying his life
12:09he wants his ex-girlfriend kidnapped and convinced to drop the charges against him and if megan won't
12:16agree to drop the charges leon wants zach to make her disappear zach understands by make her disappear leon
12:27means make her dead he instructs leon to buy a burner phone and set up a ghost email account so that they
12:36can communicate without leaving a trace then he pockets the cash and leaves assuring leon that
12:44he'll be in touch over the next week leon continues to harass megan who goes to the police again on
12:52february 5th he also continues to negotiate with his hitman zach wants 10 grand for the job and leon
13:00agrees but he wants the rest of the money up front so leon hands over the cash and a couple expensive
13:06watches to sweeten the deal at one point zach tells leon that he's convinced megan to take off
13:15but it's not true megan is still there in houston it's zach who isn't zach takes leon's money and
13:23disappears without carrying out his end of the deal he won't answer his phone and appears to have changed
13:29his number it's not great for leon apparently leon forgot the cardinal rule when you're hiring
13:36someone for a job always check their references on february 16th megan goes to the police again
13:47this time they file stocking charges leon is arrested and released on a fifteen thousand dollar bond
13:55now it's serious the assault charge was bad but it was a misdemeanor this is a felony charge it's
14:04definitely going to stop leon from obtaining his medical license in leon's eyes megan needs to be
14:10stopped but his hitman has disappeared with all of his money now he has two problems to solve
14:17on february 23rd leon pays a visit to the office of michael kubosh michael kubosh is the bail bondsman
14:28who got him out of jail after his arrest for stocking the previous week kubosh runs a popular
14:35and successful bail bonds business in houston in fact leon knows that it was kubosh who had arranged
14:44zach's bond last fall when he was arrested on the possession of stolen property charge
14:51leon demands that kubosh give him zach's new phone number
14:55but kubosh insists he doesn't know anyone named zach which doesn't go over well with leon
15:03leon starts ranting about just how important it is he finds zach
15:08leon gets very angry he explains that the reason he needs to find zach is that he paid
15:15zach a lot of money to take care of a matter he insists that she can't testify against him
15:22because it will embarrass him and his family in that she needs to go back to pittsburgh
15:30in leon's eyes he needs to make sure that megan is out of the picture
15:34and can't testify against him at his upcoming trial kubosh runs a check on the old phone number for zach
15:42that leon provides from the phone number kubosh realizes that he does know zach after all he
15:49just knows him by another name but he doesn't have zach's new number for leon it's a dead end
15:56but just over a week later things turn a corner when zach resurfaces on march 7th leon finally gets a call
16:08from zach the hitman apologizes for ghosting him and explains that he was worried that he and leon
16:18had gotten too close it's definitely a plausible explanation abundance of caution seems like a good
16:26treat for a hitman zach explains that he's decided to outsource the job to somebody else and he's found
16:35just the guy his buddy javier zach wants to meet tomorrow to introduce javier to leon leon is relieved
16:46that the plan is back on he's happy to clear his schedule but then leon drops a bombshell
16:57leon wants to make sure that he and zach are on the same page he asks we're going to take care of
17:03both problems zach responds what problems and leon clarifies both of the individuals we are talking about
17:11valerie wants to talk to you about what she wants done with her ex it's a case of two birds two stones
17:21leon is not the only one hiring a hitman
17:27in houston texas leon jacob assaults his girlfriend megan
17:32and then harasses her for weeks trying to win her back when he's charged with felony stalking leon
17:41hires a hitman to silence his ex permanently but the hitman takes off without doing the deed
17:50then on march 7th 2017 leon's hitman resurfaces zach explains that he's decided to outsource the job
18:00to somebody else and he's found just the guy his buddy javier but leon surprises the man by revealing
18:09that there isn't just one job there are two one for himself and one for his new girlfriend valerie
18:19valerie busik meets mac mcdaniel as a student at texas a m university in the 1990s she's studying
18:29veterinary medicine and graduates with her dvm in 1997. the two get married in what valerie describes
18:38as a beautiful fairy tale wedding in 2000 valerie opens a veterinary clinic in houston
18:46where mac joins her as the office manager it can't be easy to work every day with your spouse
18:53but these two managed to grow the clinic into a prominent business in 2008 after suffering fertility
19:01issues valerie and mac adopt a baby daughter completing their happy family
19:06but a few years later the trust in the relationship breaks down valerie receives a phone call out of
19:17the blue from a woman who claims she had an affair with mac but what's more the woman also provides
19:24valerie with lists of other women that she claims mac had slept with getting a call like that from a
19:31stranger is definitely shocking how do you even trust that it's true but for some reason it resonates
19:41with valerie she's become increasingly unhappy in her marriage and now she knows why
19:48in december 2014 valerie files for divorce citing infidelity as the reason valerie max divorce proceedings
20:02drag out for over a year the couple easily settle on shared custody of their daughter but the financial
20:11split is another matter entirely at first mac is required to pay child support to valerie then it's the
20:20other way around and the fact that they work together just makes everything more complicated
20:27eventually valerie is ordered to buy mac out of his share of the veterinary clinic for a whopping 1.25
20:34million dollars valerie is fortunate to have her next door neighbor act as her divorce lawyer golda is a
20:42prominent and successful attorney in town one day valerie has a chance encounter with her attorney's son
20:50leon when he walks right up to her and introduces himself he thinks he's cocky but he's also undeniably
21:01attractive and she's intrigued and the two develop a close friendship valerie's divorce is settled in august
21:102016. she moves with her daughter into a seventh floor condo in an upscale residential area of downtown houston
21:20valerie had to take out a very sizable loan to buy mac out of the vet clinic so money is tight but now
21:27that her divorce is settled she's got a new lease on life valerie and leon's friendship continues to grow
21:36in january 2017 the two are enjoying an evening together over a glass of wine though leon had broken
21:44up with his girlfriend and the two of them bond over the mistreatment they feel from their exes
21:49eventually things take a romantic turn leon is nine years younger than valerie
22:01but they are both attracted to each other valerie describes that first night together as being like a
22:08movie moment after that night valerie and leon's relationship progresses extremely quickly
22:15in less than a month he's living with her at her condo they're sharing a bank account and valerie is
22:23telling friends that they're discussing marriage valerie is extremely happy about this exciting new turn in
22:31her life mac however is not when mac learns that leon has moved into the condo with valerie and his
22:40daughter he's furious mac doesn't want leon anywhere near his daughter due to the man's criminal record
22:50for those of us playing along at home this time while valerie and leon are playing house
22:56is the same month that leon is stalking his ex megan who has an order of protection out against him
23:02he is a pending charge for assault and for felony stalking valerie agrees to never have leon at the
23:12condo while her daughter is there but when mac learns that she's not keeping her word
23:21he moves to reopen the custody arrangement by early march valerie and leon are both determined to be
23:29rid of their exes leon had hired zach to take care of megan but the man had taken leon's money and then
23:37ghosted him but now zach is back in the picture and leon and valerie agree to a meeting to take care
23:45of both problems on march 8th leon and valerie meet zach at a local business where he introduces them
23:57to their new hitman javier at the meeting leon goes first describing how he wants javier to run megan
24:06off the road and threaten her or kidnap her and convince her to leave town but if she doesn't agree
24:12to leave and to not testify against him then javier should you know do what he does leon suggests using
24:22potassium chloride which he could get from valerie's vet clinic an injection of potassium chloride would
24:31stop a person's heart and it's practically untraceable at one point leon and zach step away
24:39so valerie and javier can talk about her problem valerie wants to know how it will be done
24:46she suggests a car wreck javier agrees it could look like a robbery gone wrong a carjacking
24:57but if she wants it done the hitman wants an additional ten thousand dollar payment
25:03with the large debt valerie has she can only afford to pay in installments
25:08javier agrees to four payments of 2500 each leon then gives javier the number to his burner phone
25:23and the meeting is over
25:28the next day javier calls the burner phone he has good news but insists on delivering it in person
25:36so leon agrees to let javier come over to the condo
25:48when javier arrives he tells him that mac is dead
25:54this new hitman works fast javier staged the murder to look like a carjacking
26:01just as they discussed he offers to show leon and valerie photos of mac's body as proof
26:08but neither of them are interested in looking at the photos javier tells leon that megan is next
26:16he's going to grab her and hold her somewhere threatening her
26:22leon is all for it offering to jump in and help if needed
26:27as javier heads for the door leon reminds him to grab the eighteen hundred dollars in cash
26:34that he left out as a partial payment before he leaves
26:41later that evening javier texts leon photos of a bound and gagged megan
26:47javier phones to warn leon that megan is refusing to back down or leave town
26:52leon doesn't want her to go to the police he doesn't want the kidnapping to come back to bite
26:59him he tells javier do what you have to do
27:0620 minutes later javier messages to say that megan was out of control and had to be killed
27:13with both of their exes dead all the obstacles are finally gone megan can't testify against leon
27:20and matt can't get sole custody of valerie's daughter everything will be smooth sailing from here on out

27:33leon and valerie are certain they've gotten away with murder but at 3 a.m the police are at their door
27:42leon jacob and valerie mcdaniel bond over their perceived mistreatment by their exes
27:54and fall in love
27:58the pair decide to hire a hitman named javier to rid them of their exes permanently
28:04the very next day javier brings news that the hits have been carried out when javier arrives he
28:14tells them that mac is dead this new hitman works fast but later that night police knock on valerie's
28:22door at 3 a.m the police arrive at valerie's condo to inform her that her ex-husband has been found dead
28:31giving a notification to a family member for a person who has been killed is never easy
28:40and people can understandably be quite emotional there's no right or wrong way to react
28:46but police will pay attention to a person's reaction especially if they haven't yet been excluded as
28:53having been involved in the crime valerie launches into a master performance feigning shock at the news of
29:00max death leon is also shocked and comforts his girlfriend he then volunteers that they were both
29:09at the condo all day watching movies with valerie's daughter who is sleeping in the next room the offer
29:16of an unsolicited alibi is something the police definitely take note of someone justifying their
29:23whereabouts without being asked would certainly raise an eyebrow it's at this point the police turn the
29:29tables and arrest both leon and valerie for solicitation of capital murder
29:38police first become aware of leon jacobs murderous intentions on february 23rd when he
29:44barges into the office of his bail bondsman michael kubosh is a respected businessman in houston
29:52he has a successful bail bonds business in which he deals with all kinds of people so he's good at
29:58reading them he's also a city councilman an upstanding member of the community when leon jacobs who he had
30:08just bonded out of jail on a stalking charge comes in looking to track down this mysterious zach kubosh knows
30:16something is off when the man insists he doesn't know zach leon becomes very aggressive which worries
30:24kubosh when leon explains that he paid this so-called zach a lot of money to make sure his ex-girlfriend
30:33can't testify against him kubosh is even more worried as soon as leon leaves his office kubosh calls the
30:43assistant chief of police directly he's not just casually reporting that something might be wrong
30:50he wants to make sure it goes straight to the top the police immediately warned megan that her life
30:58may be in danger and she hightails it out of town back to pittsburgh ironically it's what leon was
31:05trying to accomplish in the first place or so he claimed after the tip from michael kubosh investigators
31:13from the harris county district attorney's office set about tracking down this mysterious zach
31:20whose real name is taz it takes them a week to find him taz is a decorated former u.s army sergeant
31:30who served two tours of duty overseas he's recently fallen on hard times and has had some trouble with
31:36the law but he definitely never had any intention of hurting megan taz admits that he was just stringing
31:43leon along happy to take the man's money he agrees to help the police in a sting operation he'll reach
31:52out to leon and introduce him to a new hitman who can get the job done javier is an undercover officer
32:00who specializes in murder for hire cases he knows exactly what they need to do to build their case
32:06against leon on march 7th zach phones leon to set up the meeting when leon asks if they can take care of
32:16both problems that valerie wants to talk to him about what she wants done with her ex-husband the
32:23police are shocked that's when they learn they're dealing with two murder for hire cases instead of
32:30one the next day zach and javier meet with leon and valerie to seal the deal first the ten thousand
32:40dollars leon has already paid to kidnap megan and make sure she's not going to testify whatever it
32:48takes plus an additional ten thousand dollars to kill valerie's ex-husband mac and make it look like
32:56a carjacking the entire meeting is recorded by hidden microphones as are several phone calls and
33:04meetings between leon and his supposed hitmen in all police make 12 audio recordings and two video
33:12recordings all of which are great evidence to be used in court the following day police bring mac and
33:21megan in on their plans the police inform mac mcdaniel about the threat against him and he agrees to pose
33:28for photos that make it appear that he was shot in the head they apply a fake bullet wound and
33:35douse him with pig's blood to really sell the authenticity ironically when javier tries to show them
33:43to leon and valerie later that night to prove that he carried out the hit neither of them are interested
33:50in looking at the photos megan also agrees to come back to houston and pose for photographs that show
33:58her tied up and gagged in the photos she looks terrified that part she didn't have to fake
34:07with enough evidence to make an arrest police show up at valerie's door at 3 a.m purportedly to make
34:14the notification about mac's death leon and valerie feigned shock as if they hadn't been told the exact same
34:24thing a few hours earlier by javier the entire encounter is recorded on police body cams when they
34:33decide they have enough the police make their arrests once they've taken leon and valerie into custody
34:42police inform them that megan and mac are both alive after all in fact mac is waiting in the hall
34:49outside to collect his nine-year-old daughter who's been asleep in the other room the entire time
34:59on march 14th valerie is released on fifty thousand dollars bail leon's bail is denied
35:07due to his pending assault and stalking charges
35:10over the next few weeks valerie takes stock of her life she makes several audio recordings attempting
35:18to explain her point of view and the unfortunate choices that she's made
35:25on march 27th a hearing is scheduled to determine the custody of valerie and mac's daughter
35:31but that morning valerie jumps from her seventh floor balcony taking her own life it's an even
35:40more tragic end to an already tragic situation after valerie's death authorities continue to pursue
35:48their case against leon who is charged with two counts of solicitation to commit capital murder
35:56one charge for megan and one for mac but as his trial gets underway a year later leon turns the tables
36:06he claims it was valerie's idea all along
36:16leon jacob plots with his girlfriend valerie mcdaniel to have their exes killed
36:22and inadvertently hires an undercover cop named javier to carry out the murders
36:29after valerie's death authorities continue to pursue their case against leon
36:34who is charged with two counts of solicitation to commit capital murder
36:40but leon insists he's innocent claiming that it was all a big misunderstanding
36:45from jail he pleads his case to the media you never intended to hire someone to harm your ex or
36:57kill your ex absolutely not instead he told me he and valerie thought they were talking to a private
37:04investigator they wanted to check on their exes not kill them so you called someone to negotiate
37:11what can't talk about that as an impending trial i really have to be careful here uh i have fighting
37:17for my life and i my lawyers you know have told me not to talk about certain circumstances prosecutors
37:24say you paid a hitman twenty thousand and two cartier watches was money exchanged not with a hitman
37:32but by the time his trial gets underway in march 2018 leon has changed his tune
37:41and points the finger at his late girlfriend valerie as the mastermind behind the entire plot
37:49prosecutors offer leon a plea deal of 40 years in prison but leon turns it down he's sure he can
37:56talk his way out of anything megan testifies about the assault in january 2017 and the stalking that
38:05continued until leon's arrest two months later leon insists on taking the stand in his own defense
38:13explaining away his stalking of megan as a continued attempt to win her back apparently the entire time he
38:23was living with and even discussing marriage with valerie he was really trying to get back together with megan
38:33leon insists that he never wanted megan hurt only reasoned with
38:41but leon's charm offensive is cut off at the knees
38:45shortly before the trial the prosecutor files a notice of intent to introduce prior convictions
38:53and extraneous offenses to impeach leon's testimony and it's a long list despite leon's continued claims
39:04to be a surgeon he has been thrown out of more than half a dozen medical residencies
39:10one hospital said he was functionally unreliable another that he was a potential threat to patients
39:18and shockingly the entire story is eerily familiar
39:24in 2001 leon marries his college girlfriend annie annie supports them while they move from new york to
39:32illinois to pennsylvania while leon bounces from one medical residency to another never completing
39:39the program and getting his license by the time they have their second child leon becomes dangerously
39:46abusive on december 6 2012 he takes her keys and blocks the door when annie attempts to leave the house
39:57to drop off their kids at daycare this time she's had enough and he calls the police who come to the
40:07house and speak with a couple together unfortunately leon is his usual charming self and the officer lets the
40:16incident go but when annie gets back from dropping off the baby leon attacks her
40:27he pins her down and holds a straight razor to her throat screaming that he'll kill her if she calls
40:33the police ever again the following summer after another incident where leon throws a chair annie
40:41finally works up the confidence to leave and takes out an order of protection against her husband
40:48when she files for divorce annie cites the reason as extreme mental cruelty
40:54that's several steps up from irreconcilable differences leon's response
41:04he stalks and harasses her for months until he meets megan and the cycle starts all over again
41:13leon pleads guilty to cyber stalking over his harassment of his ex-wife and serves probation
41:19but annie is not the only one he had been harassing and his various charges included burglary criminal
41:28mischief telephone harassment and issuing terroristic threats when leon declares bankruptcy in 2016
41:39it's because he owes one hundred thousand dollars to seven different lawyers in five cities
41:52at the trial leon assumes he can talk his way out of anything even his own guilt he claims that he
42:00never wanted anyone dead pointing to the fact that in the 12 separate recordings the police made of his
42:06conversations during their investigation he never actually asked for megan to be killed but he did
42:13suggest the use of potassium chloride to the heart several times which as a doctor leon knew would be fatal
42:23in the end it takes the jury only 75 minutes to find him guilty on both counts
42:36mac and annie both testify at leon's sentencing hearing where he's given a life sentence for each count
42:43plus a ten thousand dollar fund after all she's been through megan gets the last word in her victim
42:52impact statement she says while you sit in jail i hope you think of me because it's because of me you'll be
