Michelin-Listed SIX at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art Closes Due to Unsustainable Trading Conditions
Transcript
00:00Sixth restaurant, located on the top floor of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art,
00:06has closed its doors after serving fine dining with views of the River Tyne since 2009.
00:12The restaurant, which earned two AA rosettes and a spot in the 2024 Michelin Guide,
00:18became a hallmark of North East dining. In 2023, the restaurant was acquired by
00:25Numa Group, which also owns the gaming company Double Eleven. Following renovations, it reopened
00:31in March 2024, continuing to offer modern British cuisine made from sustainably sourced local produce.
00:39However, the owners announced the closure on social media, citing a combination of rising costs,
00:45economic challenges and sustained losses. The team expressed their gratitude to customers and staff,
00:52acknowledging the difficulty of the decision. The closure adds to a growing list of recent
00:58casualties in the region's restaurant scene, as many businesses continue to struggle with
01:03increasing financial pressures. The announcement has drawn attention to broader challenges within
01:08the hospitality industry, particularly in light of government support being excluded for some sectors.
01:15As the North East grapples with these ongoing economic difficulties,
01:19businesses like Sixx are facing an uncertain future. The owners are now in the process of contacting
01:25customers and refunding deposits, as well as honouring gift vouchers.
