00:00Susie, you know we're looking for a secret genius?
00:07Yeah.
00:08What does a secret genius look like?
00:10Well, that's the thing, they don't have to look or be like anyone.
00:13Could they be plump and maybe be a classic pair?
00:16Sure.
00:17Could they be slightly thinning at the back, you know, in the hair department?
00:21Absolutely.
00:22Could their teeth maybe not be the best?
00:24Why not?
00:25Susie, are you saying I could be a secret genius?
00:28Oh.
00:29And I wouldn't say classic pair.
00:38Across the UK, there are estimated to be a million undiscovered geniuses.
00:44Calling all secret geniuses.
00:46As is a parliament here, we're not going to get any geniuses in there, are they?
00:50Ordinary people.
00:52When I were a kid, I used to know everybody's reg plate aren't a state where I lived.
00:57With extraordinary brains.
00:59Nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, I think the next one's phosphorus.
01:04Who have no idea just how clever they are.
01:08I got about four GCSEs.
01:10But somewhere deep down, I reckon I've got some kind of hidden potential.
01:15Nominated by friends, family or themselves.
01:19People see me and they don't think I'm capable of something like this.
01:23Am I doing this to prove anyone wrong? Absolutely.
01:26Each week, 12 people from different corners of the UK...
01:31Complete the number sequence.
01:34...have been invited to Genius HQ.
01:37Oh, my goodness.
01:40Oh!
01:41Here, they'll compete in a series of mind-stretching games...
01:44Where do we begin?
01:45...designed with Nensa, the society for the world's smartest people.
01:51Ah!
01:52I've literally just figured it out.
01:53Straight in.
01:54Super powers.
01:57...to find out if they have more potential than they ever thought possible.
02:02Oh, my God, I got it right.
02:04Come on, you're doing this for Manchester!
02:06Maybe I am clever.
02:08But only the top three from each regional heat will make it to the final.
02:13Oh, my God!
02:15The winner of Secret Genius is...
02:27I'm a receptionist for a hotel chain.
02:30People 100% underestimate me.
02:33Some of them just think you're a minimum wage moron.
02:37Hello, and welcome to Secret Genius.
02:40Today, it's the good people of the North West and Northern Ireland...
02:44...who might always have suspected they have sky-high IQs...
02:47...but have remained as untested as the set of skeets...
02:50...my mum and dad bought me for my 14th birthday.
02:54When I was at school, I was labelled as being thick.
02:57I'm kind of thinking, you know, I am reasonably clever.
03:00Fingers crossed I can prove that I'm not as thick as the school teachers said.
03:04Will someone's grey matter come good when it matters...
03:07...and see them lift the Secret Genius crown?
03:10Hello!
03:11My name's CJ.
03:12Nice to meet you all.
03:14I've never done out like this before. Have you?
03:16No.
03:17I've never even done an intelligence test or anything like that.
03:20So I'm kind of just trusting that I won't regret doing this.
03:22It's good to push yourself out of the confidence when they've been out again though, isn't it?
03:26Have you had to come for?
03:27Oh, I've come from Telford. Have you ever been?
03:30I haven't.
03:31Well, you're not missing out to be fair.
03:33What do you do for work?
03:34I work on an ambulance crew.
03:35Amazing!
03:37I'm a single mum.
03:38I work nights.
03:39I respond to 999 calls.
03:42I bet that's high pressure though.
03:44It can be.
03:45I seem to be able to pull things out of my arse from nowhere.
03:48Pretty well remember all of our patients' details.
03:53Name, address, next of kin, phone number, date of birth, allergies.
03:57What do you do for work?
03:58I'm a dance teacher and run a dance school.
04:00Amazing!
04:01Oh my God.
04:03Dance has always been in me.
04:04I've been dancing since I was three.
04:06I can't do as much as I used to do in terms of teaching.
04:09The hips and the feet are failing.
04:10The brain's not yet, so what can it do?
04:13What do you do for a living?
04:14I'm a shepherd.
04:15That's what I do for money.
04:17I wasn't expecting such a diverse group of people.
04:19I was expecting a bit more lab coats and lecturers and that.
04:23Do you work with sheepdogs?
04:24I have a sheepdog.
04:26Can a dog be a genius?
04:29Hi guys!
04:32How are you all feeling?
04:34Yeah!
04:36You are representing North West and Northern Ireland.
04:39Who's got the thickest accent? Come on.
04:41Probably me.
04:42I am really common.
04:43You're really common?
04:44Oh my God, so am I!
04:47But listen, you're thinking, how can he be in charge?
04:51And you're right.
04:52We need a responsible adult.
04:54And until we find one of them, let's welcome resident brain box, Miss Susie Dent!
05:00Oh!
05:02Susie's come all the way from 1978.
05:05Look at that!
05:06Look at that!
05:07Woo!
05:08Go on!
05:09Ooh!
05:10Ooh!
05:11Ooh, love it!
05:12Anyway, welcome.
05:13Now, for some of you, the school system may not have helped you reach your full potential,
05:17even though you may have a very high IQ.
05:20But in this competition, we're hopefully going to change that.
05:24Behind these doors are some spectacular but slightly devilish games.
05:29These have all been designed with Mensa based on the tests that they use to measure intelligence.
05:35So today, we are going to be putting you to the test with two quick fire rounds.
05:39Which you will have 12 minutes to complete.
05:42And the bottom four of you will be going home.
05:45Followed by a pairs round in which you will need to team up and collaborate.
05:49But only the top two pairs will be going through to the next round.
05:53Yes, so have a little look around and see who you think is your intellectual match, okay?
05:59You don't look impressed.
06:01And then three of you will go through to the final.
06:04Are you ready for your first game?
06:06Yeah!
06:07I'll be watching, but don't let that put you off.
06:10You got this, okay?
06:11Woo!
06:12Yeah!
06:13Fist bump!
06:14Stop being so common.
06:19Oh, yeah.
06:20Crikey!
06:21That was a lot.
06:23Deep breaths, CJ.
06:24Deep breaths.
06:27So, Susie, what are we actually testing here, then?
06:30Well, each of these games has been designed with Mensa to test our players' more intelligence
06:35and the instinctual workings of their brain.
06:41So, across the four heats, each player must try to complete each game correctly
06:45in the fastest time possible.
06:47And in today's quickfire round, only the top eight players will make it through.
06:54What was it that brought you here?
06:56My friends always kind of say, like, oh, Jo's a genius.
06:59When this came up, I was like, oh, do you think I should do this?
07:02And she's like, well, yeah.
07:03That's so interesting because I think a few of us have been recommended by someone else.
07:07I don't know if there's a thing there about maybe we don't see ourselves as anything special,
07:11but someone else does.
07:12For me, it was my mum.
07:13She's my biggest fan of my mum.
07:15Bless her.
07:16Nathan!
07:18Go on, Nathan!
07:20What a Nathan!
07:21Carlisle-born Nathan is first to take on the quickfire round.
07:26My brain is like someone sellotaped together a load of wires and then struck them with lightning.
07:33Now, that can sound a little bit like a terrible thing, absolute chaos.
07:38Sometimes it is chaos, but I feel like it means there's also a lot of potential in there.
07:43Tell me a bit about Nathan.
07:44Well, he's from Carlisle.
07:46Bullied at school.
07:47Self-confessed nerd.
07:48Nerds are cool.
07:49They are cool.
07:50You know, the first use of nerd was in Dr. Seuss when I ran the zoo.
07:53Do you remember the Dr. Seuss book?
07:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:55He devised this weird animal called a nerd.
07:57Is that where it comes from?
07:58It's where we got it all.
07:59Okay.
08:00Geeks used to bite their heads off live chickens.
08:03But that's another story.
08:07I am certainly different.
08:09Whether that's good or bad, maybe this will help me find out.
08:19Let's go.
08:24All the months of the year can be spelt with these letters apart from one.
08:28That month has one letter missing.
08:30Which letter is missing and from which month?
08:33On the surface, quite straightforward.
08:35So, every single month of the year can be spelt with these letters, bar one.
08:39Oh, Susie, imagine all the people at home playing along.
08:43Because you can.
08:45I'm watching you.
08:47That's a lot of letters.
08:48So, what this is testing is our players' ability to process and interpret written information.
08:54So, this is what we call verbal reasoning.
08:57I think, right, how am I going to do this?
08:59And the first thing that comes to me is just go through them one by one.
09:03January, I've got J, A, N.
09:07He's going through this systematically, Nathan.
09:09It might be the longer approach.
09:10You go January, February.
09:12Is there an M, is there an A, Y?
09:14See, some people might just go in and have an incredibly quick scan.
09:17March.
09:18I'm not seeing a H at the moment.
09:23I'm just going to scan backwards again.
09:25What you do is, I think of all the months and think of letters that jump out.
09:29Yeah, that is exactly the right strategy.
09:31Look, the least common letter, like the I in April, the F in February, the H in March, that's where to start.
09:38I've found the H.
09:40Lesser used ones.
09:41Yes, yeah.
09:42That's a really good way to go.
09:43I have an answer.
09:44The key is they have to write both the letter down and the month.
09:47I'm pretty confident with my answer.
09:49Well done, Nathan.
09:50He got there in 4 minutes 38.
09:52That is a really solid start.
09:54Get on to the next game.
09:55Time's clicking.
10:01Place the shapes in the correct positions on the grid to ensure each line adds up to the given value.
10:06You must keep all the numbers on the blocks facing the right way up.
10:10You must press the stop button to finish.
10:13They have to arrange different numbers so that each row matches the total on the left-hand side.
10:19Okay.
10:20So, 11, 15, 20, 26.
10:23So, now we're testing our players' ability to think logically and solve new problems.
10:28So, this is what we call fluid reasoning.
10:31I start by going for the biggest numbers.
10:33The biggest total surely will have to be made with some of the biggest numbers.
10:38But if I have the tens in that one, that's 20.
10:40He's put the tens at the top.
10:41Well, that's clever, isn't it? The tens got to go at the top.
10:44Yeah.
10:45The two tens, they can't go in any of the ones apart from the top one because they alone add up to all of the other totals or exceed them.
10:52So, that has to go in the top one.
10:54Oh, his mind is working.
10:55It's whizzing a lot.
10:56It's whizzing a lot.
10:57A dozen, yes.
10:58But if that's one and five, that's six, six, five, maybe.
11:01I look at four and two, five and one, other things that add up to six.
11:05The six is what I need.
11:06And one, that's 26.
11:09I'll stick the three here.
11:11It works.
11:12So, I pick up the piece with the twos on it.
11:16It's kind of a corner piece.
11:18And there is a corner that I really want it to fit in, but it would mean rotating it.
11:22I think it just has to be upright.
11:25The twos are the wrong way round and the instructions specifically say right way up.
11:33Four, what does that add up to?
11:34Seven, four, that's eleven.
11:36I'm just going to double check that this is legal, but I'm pretty sure it is.
11:39Legal? What?
11:40You must keep all the numbers on the blocks facing the right way up.
11:43Those numbers are the right way up, even if they're rotated.
11:46I think that's allowed.
11:47I think that's a valid solution.
11:48So, I'm going to stop.
11:52He's thinking the right way up is facing up rather than facing down.
11:55But the right way up is essentially the right orientation.
11:58I think he's misinterpreted the rules.
12:01And anyway, no one would really think to put their numbers face down, would they?
12:05So, Nathan only got the first game right, but in really good time.
12:08So, unless eight other players ace both rounds, he's got a really good chance of going through.
12:14I feel confident.
12:19Do you like working at your hotel?
12:20It's all right working there just to tide me over, yeah.
12:23What would you do if you'd say you could just do anything?
12:26Oh, I'm a performer. I'm a drag queen.
12:28Oh, God, yeah.
12:29How long have you been doing drag queen?
12:31Just since I was 18, so a couple of years now.
12:34What happened after school, you went to college?
12:36I didn't offer to go to Cambridge University.
12:41Amazing. That's amazing.
12:43At face value, people probably wouldn't think I was clever.
12:48They'd probably think I was a bit simple.
12:50Yeah, I've always just had an interest in academia and literature and reading.
12:55It wasn't right for me at the time, and my family thought I was making a huge mistake.
12:59Yeah.
13:00I moved out on my own.
13:01Wow.
13:02Just started at the hotel, and doing this, it would be just nice to show them that I'm talented in different ways.
13:11Yep.
13:20Right, let's see what the others are capable of.
13:22Which letter is missing, and from which months?
13:26Can I rearrange these?
13:28Nothing's gonna stop me.
13:30Why?
13:31The whole idea is really just to give it a quick scan.
13:33Is this the best strategy?
13:35Probably not.
13:36It can take ages.
13:37There's an A before January.
13:40Oh, another one rearranging them.
13:41Yes.
13:43I like her look, don't you?
13:44Very much.
13:45It's like a haunted Victorian school girl.
13:48Let's try putting them in.
13:50Oh, no, not again.
13:51I'm dealing out the cards that I've got in my hand, one at a time.
13:54He's collecting them all in his hands.
13:56I can't even see them.
13:59Wow.
14:00That was a real raspberry.
14:02Okay.
14:03Oh, Helen.
14:04Start to think of months that have less used letters in.
14:08I think I've got it.
14:10I'm like a strategy.
14:11Helen's on fire.
14:12She means business.
14:14Well, I've got no clue about this.
14:16I've tried everything.
14:17If I had six hours to do this, it'd be all right, but we don't.
14:20We've got 12 minutes, so this is hopeless.
14:23I'm just going to guess.
14:24Got the correct month, but the incorrect letter.
14:27Yep.
14:28I really don't think I'm seeing a G.
14:29Excellent.
14:30Lovely writing.
14:31G.
14:32August.
14:34Okay, so there's no G.
14:35Oh, my goodness, this is so sharp.
14:38With the two tens, there's only one line it can go on,
14:40so it has to go there.
14:42And now that I've got those tens in place,
14:44I'm thinking, okay, what else have I got?
14:48How fast would that just...
14:49Justin.
14:503.49.
14:544.40.
14:577.53.
14:58Well done, Helen.
14:59Just a dancer, she's proving you're not.
15:02Hey!
15:03How was that?
15:04Yeah, all right, I think.
15:06Last to attempt the quick-fire round, 32-year-old Ollie.
15:10You've got children as well, haven't you?
15:12Right, so I've got two boys.
15:13Dan's 16 and Lucas is 12.
15:15What about your little boy?
15:16How old's he?
15:17He's just turning five, but...
15:19It's the first time I've not done school running.
15:20Really?
15:21Yeah, yeah, all that.
15:22It's really weird.
15:24Oh, you're getting a bit emotional?
15:25Yeah, because I just miss him.
15:28Sometimes he does remind me a lot of me.
15:31He's got a good memory and even when he was sort of 18 months old,
15:34he would recite the Gruffalo word for word and...
15:37Do you know what I mean?
15:38Yeah?
15:39Yeah, I'm really sorry.
15:40I'm sorry.
15:41Don't apologise.
15:43When I were a kid, I used to know everybody's reg plate aren't a state where I lived.
15:48I probably knew off by all.
15:5060 or 70 car reg plates.
15:53Don't apologise at all.
15:55I do like sell sponges, aren't they?
15:57At school, I think I should have at least tried.
16:01I did not want to do A-levels, I did not want to do a degree.
16:04I don't think I've ever shown any sort of passion to progress.
16:07Some people are just really good at knowing what they want to do
16:10and I've never had that.
16:12I worked in shops, in sales, in a call centre.
16:16I learnt to do plumbing.
16:18I hated it.
16:20Oli!
16:25I've done this through morbid curiosity.
16:29Am I actually good at something or am I just dim-witted but good at remembering stuff?
16:35This is lovely Oli.
16:36I love the name Oli.
16:37I love the name Oli.
16:38If I am a secret genius, I think it would be nice to be able to tap into it
16:42and then apply it to my son, Finlay.
16:45It couldn't have been a worse task for me.
16:48I'm not very good at anagrams and I'm not very good at word searches and things.
16:54I'm thinking, start logically month by month and go through and spell them.
16:59I'm not getting anywhere here.
17:00Shit.
17:01Shit.
17:03Shit.
17:04Shit.
17:35I'm getting some sign language.
17:36Didn't you?
17:37That's clever.
17:38I just made up my own sign language for the dog.
17:41Twelve people from the North West and Northern Ireland are taking on a series of Mensa inspired games
17:47to see if they have the intelligence of a genius.
17:51I'm quite nervous.
17:53You're absolutely fine.
17:55My family think I'm clever.
17:57Whether I'm a genius or not, I don't know.
17:59I'm hoping.
18:00I'm really...
18:01I'm hoping that I am.
18:04Ambulance crew member Ollie is the last to work out which letter is missing from which month.
18:16Oh, she's struggling with this one.
18:18But if she can get one game right in a quick enough time,
18:21it might just get her through to the next round.
18:26I'm still not really getting anywhere fast.
18:28I look up at clock and I've used about seven minutes.
18:31I really haven't got a clue of that one.
18:33She hasn't got a clue.
18:34So I'm just going to say it's E.
18:38Move on.
18:39She's just left it.
18:40She's gone!
18:41Ollie!
18:42Ollie has left the building.
18:48I'm completely letting the nerves get the better of me.
18:50Has she gone on to the second?
18:52I might not have time to do the next task.
18:56Alan, she's only got five minutes left.
18:58I really hope she can do this.
19:00Come on, Ollie!
19:01Place the shapes in their correct positions on the grid to ensure each line adds up to the given value.
19:06Cool.
19:07I'm thinking this one's going to be just as difficult, if not more difficult.
19:17I was always really quite good at mental arithmetic.
19:23When you're recognising patterns and things like that.
19:26I looked at the top row with 26 and I thought, well, the double ten can only go on the top row.
19:32Oh, my goodness.
19:35She's been so fast.
19:42Oh, my God!
19:43That was impressive.
19:44I mean, that was incredibly fast.
19:46She did that second game in 2 minutes 48.
19:49I felt relieved that I'd done it, but then at the same time I was just thinking I could have had an extra three minutes next door.
20:00How are we feeling?
20:01How are we feeling about results?
20:04Nervous?
20:05I think, personally, I'll be really shocked if I stay.
20:08Hi, guys!
20:09Hello!
20:10Hi, guys!
20:11Got you some Wednesdaydale and an ice brew, because I know we've got some Northerners in.
20:16Yes.
20:17How did you find the games?
20:19Good.
20:20The missing month, the letter was G from the month August.
20:25And you had to write down both the letter and the month, OK?
20:29You didn't need to rearrange all the letters on the board like you were auditioning for Countdown.
20:33Shit.
20:35And with the second game, the easiest way was to put the larger numbers at the top.
20:40Some of you looked like you were doing your tax returns in a wind tunnel.
20:43Six of you got both games correct, whilst two of you got one right in a quick enough time to get you through to the next round.
20:53The eight players with the best combination of speed and accuracy are, in no particular order...
21:05Harley.
21:08Helen.
21:09Ooh.
21:12Nathan.
21:15Joe.
21:18Jasmine.
21:22Sarah.
21:25Justin.
21:31And last to go through is...
21:37Ollie.
21:40Are you surprised?
21:41Yeah, really surprised.
21:43I'm just really shocked that I was top eight.
21:45I really thought that I'd messed it up royally.
21:48OK, so obviously that leaves four people going home.
21:52And of course that means CJ, Ethan...
21:56It's all right.
21:57Steve...
21:59And Liz, you can go back to your flock.
22:04It would have been nice to have done better, but at least I got the August part right.
22:11You know, it's back to the hotel for me.
22:13Now go and rest your brains, because the games are going to get harder.
22:20Goodness me.
22:22I've made it to the next round.
22:23I'm really relieved.
22:25I don't think there's anyone more surprised than you are, is there?
22:27Oh, it's unbelievable.
22:29Yeah, that probably would help.
22:31Aw, well done, everyone.
22:33Well done, everyone.
22:35We're all gonna do fine.
22:36So when did this start then?
22:52Is this just happened overnight or...?
22:54Then I woke up this morning and was just completely gone.
22:57It's day two for the eight remaining possible geniuses.
23:02I know that I sometimes get stuck in this imposter syndrome thing where it's like,
23:05yeah, but maybe I've just fluked it or...
23:07Yeah.
23:08It's a terrible way to think.
23:10Deep breath.
23:11What sort of strengths do you have?
23:13What do you think you're really good at that's gonna help you?
23:15So I can walk into a room and I'll spot little details,
23:18and then I can recall them sort of years later.
23:22Hi, guys!
23:25How are we all feeling?
23:27Yeah, good!
23:28Has our brain had a bit of a rest?
23:30I'm on vocal rest.
23:31What?
23:32Oh, my God.
23:33Blink twice if you're having a good time.
23:36Right answer.
23:38Right, okay.
23:40For this next round, you're gonna work in pairs.
23:43You wanna test your communication and teamwork skills,
23:46but most importantly, your memory and verbal.
23:50You choose the pairs yourself.
23:51The one who was quickest in the previous games picks first,
23:54and so on.
23:56Okay, so the first person to pick...
24:00..is Justin.
24:01Yesterday, you got both quick-fire rounds correct
24:04in three minutes and 49 seconds.
24:07Ooh.
24:08When he said that I got the quickest score yesterday,
24:10I was very, very surprised.
24:12So pick someone you think you're gonna work well with.
24:14I'm happy with Ollie.
24:15You better have a good memory.
24:16I hope so, love.
24:17You said before you had so.
24:18I hope so.
24:19Oh, God.
24:21Right, the next person to choose their pair is...
24:25Joe.
24:26Who are you gonna pick?
24:27I'm gonna pick Nathan.
24:28Because he's great.
24:30You are sweet.
24:31Well, it was quite nice to be picked early on.
24:34I'm kind of used to, for example, in PE,
24:36being one of the later picks,
24:38so hopefully I can do my bit to make our team do well.
24:41The next fastest person not in a pair is Helen,
24:45the tap-dancing queen.
24:47Now, who are you gonna go for?
24:48I'll go with Jasmine.
24:49I won't ask Jasmine how you feel about this
24:51because I don't feel I'm gonna get much back.
24:53Thumbs up!
24:56That, of course, leaves Harley and Sarah.
25:00Now, only the two fastest pairs
25:02will go through to the next round,
25:04so get those brains in gear.
25:06Good luck.
25:09So, Susie, what does round two involve?
25:15Well, this is one I love.
25:17So, it takes place in an ice cream parlour.
25:19It requires a huge amount of memory recall.
25:22That's what we're testing first and foremost with this one,
25:24as you will see.
25:25So, Alan, you're having a party.
25:27Who's coming?
25:28Just four guests, though.
25:29Three guests. I'm actually one of the guests.
25:30It's a real slap in the face.
25:32That is true.
25:33And each of them requires a bespoke ice cream.
25:37So, one of the players is gonna have to relay the orders
25:40to the other player,
25:41who's then gonna have to make the ice cream.
25:43These roles can be swapped at any time,
25:45but they only have 15 minutes on the clock.
25:47Hopefully my memories are all right.
25:49Communication skills.
25:50If we can't communicate...
25:51No, then we're shagged, aren't we?
25:53Ollie!
25:54Justin!
25:57Come on!
25:58Did you do this?
26:02I'm really happy that he picked me,
26:03and I'm also nervous.
26:05I really don't want to let him down,
26:07and I'd be so upset if he got knocked out because of me.
26:11My stomach feels like it's about to fall out my arse.
26:14It's day two of the North West and Northern Ireland heat.
26:29And Justin and Ollie are the first pair to tackle round two.
26:33I scream.
26:35Instructions?
26:36Make an ice cream for four customers.
26:38Only one person at a time will be able to hear the order,
26:41and you can listen to the order as many times as you like.
26:44You must place the four completed ice creams on the counter
26:47and press the stop button to finish.
26:49Are you happy with that?
26:50Yeah.
26:51Do you want to do the orders and I'll do the ice creams?
26:53Cos you're good at memory, aren't you?
26:55Yes.
26:56Which one would you choose to memorise or would you choose to make?
26:58I'd make it cos I'd have a little lick myself.
27:05Adele wants a four scoop ice cream,
27:08starting with vanilla at the bottom, chocolate, cookies and cream
27:13and strawberry on the top.
27:15Two wafers, two flakes and sprinkles.
27:22So the first one is vanilla at the bottom,
27:25then chocolate, cookies and cream, then strawberry.
27:28The first order is relatively simple.
27:31Two wafers, two flakes and sprinkles.
27:34Thinking, yeah, I've got that one.
27:37That's locked in.
27:38Who'd like to keep us into the next one?
27:40Amanda only wants two scoops.
27:43She wants the top two flavours of Adele's,
27:46but wants to swap cookies and cream for mango sorbet.
27:50Oh, it's tricky.
27:52With double the flakes that Adele has,
27:55but half the wafers and strawberry sauce.
27:58It changes really suddenly from being really simple
28:01to doing, like, functional maths and remembering things now.
28:05The next one is mango sorbet and strawberry.
28:09One wafer, four flakes, strawberry sauce.
28:12Well done.
28:13That's good. That is good.
28:15Oh, look, it's my order.
28:20What's your favourite ice cream, Alan?
28:22Oh, a knobbly-bobbly, of course.
28:24Alan's ice cream is the same as Adele's,
28:27but his bottom flavour is mint,
28:29and he wants double the number of wafers.
28:32So, Alan wants mint on the bottom.
28:41Yeah.
28:43Erm...
28:47I do think I have got quite a good memory,
28:49but I just really don't want to let him down.
28:52He wants chocolate.
28:54If you're not sure, go back and check.
28:56Yeah, no, it's fine.
28:57And that's always in the back of your mind.
28:59You know, you've got to get the odour right.
29:01Yeah.
29:02Then cookies and cream.
29:03Yeah.
29:04Then strawberry.
29:05OK.
29:06I forgot wafers and things.
29:08OK, that's fine.
29:09I'll come back.
29:10Oh, dear.
29:11Mmm.
29:14Bin that.
29:15Bin.
29:17It was right!
29:18I think her nerves are getting to her, Alan.
29:20I'm finding a bit of frustration
29:22because she seems to be taking a long time
29:24to make sure that she can remember it,
29:25and I'm thinking, you're just going for one order.
29:28Do you want to listen to that last one?
29:30OK.
29:31It confused me which one wanted double.
29:33Justin's gone to the phone now, so that's good.
29:35They're alternating a little bit.
29:38Yeah, Adele's, but mint, and double the number of wafers.
29:42Four wafers.
29:43So it's mint.
29:44Can you remember what Adele's was?
29:45Chocolate.
29:46Cookies and cream.
29:48Strawberry.
29:49Strawberry.
29:50But it would double the wafers, weren't it?
29:51Double the wafers, yeah.
29:52You're happy with that?
29:53Yeah.
29:54Some sprinkles.
29:55And sprinkles.
29:56Correct.
29:57Great.
29:58Right, they're on the last one.
30:01Ant wants double the scoops of what Amanda is having,
30:04but he wants to swap strawberry for lemon sorbet.
30:08He wants half of Amanda's flakes,
30:11but double the number of Adele's wafers.
30:15So Ant is the same as Adele's, but he wants double the number.
30:19I completely lost it.
30:20He's a bit confused.
30:22I really, really appreciate how difficult it had been for Ollie,
30:26and I felt so guilty.
30:28Can't remember it.
30:29Can I make...
30:30Do you want to start doing that once I go back and listen again?
30:31I can make it.
30:32You make it, I'll go back and listen again.
30:33While you re-listen.
30:34Come on, Justin.
30:35Ant wants double the scoops of what Amanda is having.
30:41So it is Adele's, half the flakes, double the wafers.
30:44I thought Ant was the same as Amanda, but he wanted double.
30:46So it's double what Adele had.
30:48Justin said that is definitely the double of Adele and not Amanda,
30:53and he said yeah.
30:54And I just think to myself, yeah, well, if you're happy, I'm happy.
30:57And that's massive.
30:59It's massive because it's double Adele's and not Amanda's.
31:04We're going to be. You ready?
31:09I mean, she's going to go out of business if she gives that size look.
31:13That would tough.
31:14I can say they got three out of the four.
31:17Three?
31:18Three out of the four.
31:19Oh, wow.
31:20And their time was 13.57, so they did not have long left.
31:22Let's see if any of the others can get all four correct, shall we?
31:26Would you like to listen to the order first?
31:28Do you want to go and listen?
31:29Go and listen.
31:30Good at memory.
31:31I'm not too bad.
31:32I think we should both listen at some point anyway,
31:34so shall I just go over here?
31:35Yes.
31:36Vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream.
31:39Poor old Jasmine.
31:41Vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream.
31:43I think we're both confident with that one.
31:45Two flakes, two wafers and sprinkles.
31:47Well done, Sarah.
31:48That was spot on.
31:49The second order comes through and I panic.
31:51I always used to pick up routines very quickly.
31:54My retention skills were very good, but that time pressed just a bit much.
31:58It's so hard.
32:00Oh, oh, she's gone crazy.
32:02Okay.
32:03I don't want to let Jasmine down.
32:05I think if you're stressed, memory is one of the hardest, hardest things.
32:09Oh, God.
32:10When you're put on the spot, your mind just goes blank.
32:12Totally.
32:13I feel like I want to listen again.
32:14I'm so sorry.
32:15Amanda wants the top two of Adele's, but she wants to swap the cookies and cream for mango sorbet.
32:22For Harley and I, this is going okay.
32:24Carry on.
32:25If you want to go and listen, yeah.
32:26Okay.
32:27Frankly, I feel a bit cheeky in this moment because Joe's having to remember all the orders,
32:33which is the crux of the game.
32:35Correct.
32:36That was very slick.
32:38Alan's ice cream is the same as Adele's.
32:41Adele?
32:42Is she really your best friend?
32:43Yeah.
32:44Has she married me?
32:46I'm now divorced, so let's just move on.
32:48I don't really want to talk about it.
32:49Do you want to go over?
32:51I'll go over and have a listen, yeah.
32:52Good.
32:53Nathan's going to listen now.
32:55So, I got that Ant is having double Amanda.
33:03That was complicated.
33:04I think you want to go and listen to it again.
33:06Oh!
33:07Nathan!
33:08She does look a little bit stressed.
33:11And I'm now questioning this, that there's something about doubling.
33:15Oh, that's too much sauce, Jasmine.
33:20Mango?
33:21Mango.
33:22I'm a bit aware that I'm taking more of a forward roll than I normally would.
33:27Are you happy with that?
33:28Stop.
33:29Yep.
33:30Yep.
33:311105.
33:32About 15 minutes.
33:33Wow, wow, wow.
33:34That's good.
33:35You were definitely better being over there than me.
33:37Am I getting the impression she's not pleased with this?
33:40Well, there we go.
33:41There we go.
33:42Okay.
33:43You're good.
33:44We're good, we're good, we're good.
33:45Yep.
33:46Okay.
33:51We did what we could.
33:57Nothing in the world could have preferred me for that.
34:00There's no point guessing.
34:01Yeah.
34:02We've done what we've done.
34:03Hello, everyone.
34:04Hello.
34:05Hello.
34:06Hello.
34:07So, what did you think of the game?
34:09Excellent.
34:11Four of you have scooped a place in the final game.
34:16The other four, I think, had brain freeze.
34:19So, the four going through are...
34:28Nathan and Jo.
34:31Well done, though.
34:32You got all four correct.
34:34Nathan, you look shocked.
34:36I, honestly, I thought I was useless.
34:39I thought Jo did everything.
34:40I really wasn't.
34:41But, I'm so proud.
34:44And the other pair going through with three correct is...
34:50Justin and Ollie.
34:52Oh.
34:53100% that was you.
34:54Aww.
34:55So glad I picked you.
34:56Oh, well, that's nice.
34:58But, obviously, that means we've got to say goodbye to you four.
35:04Well done.
35:05Nice.
35:06I did panic a little bit in there.
35:07And it was mainly because there was two of us.
35:09I'd much rather fail on my own than fail and let somebody else down.
35:13I am really proud of myself for getting this far.
35:16I think it's a massive achievement.
35:18I still can't believe it.
35:20I'm in complete shock, really.
35:22Like, such disbelief.
35:24Just comparing myself to everybody else, thinking they're really smart
35:27and definitely not feeling confident about the last round.
35:30I sat down thinking, oh, well, if I go, I've had a really nice couple of days.
35:33And now I've got that horrible out of sync feeling like, ah, shit.
35:36Do it again.
35:38So, you're going through to the final game.
35:41I know you've been surrounded by frozen food, but why don't you lot go off and cool down?
35:46Because things are going to get tougher.
35:48What?
35:50The worst bit is, is that there's four of us here and later on one of us is going to leave.
36:07Yeah.
36:08You know, and it is, it is horrible.
36:10In the final game at Genius HQ, we have four players left.
36:15Trying to be in the best head space I can be.
36:18Where three will go through to our finals in Oxford.
36:21What are they playing?
36:22They're playing a game called Come to Light.
36:24It's the ultimate test of their pattern recognition and memory skills.
36:28And they have up to 30 minutes to complete both stages of the game.
36:32Oli!
36:33First to play for a place in the finals is ambulance crew member Oli.
36:39I don't think I've ever excelled at anything.
36:41So, to then be told, like, oh, yeah, actually you are really clever or gifted or whatever,
36:47I would be shocked.
36:51Are they all your lamps, Susie?
36:56Yeah.
36:57Just call me Miss Havisham.
36:58I was going to say, your hoarding's quite niche.
37:00In front of you is a set of lamps.
37:04A lamp will illuminate on the sound of a beep.
37:06In this final round, you will hear a beep.
37:09And at each beep, one of the lamps will light.
37:12And you will have to spot as a player the sequence in which these lamps are being illuminated.
37:18And at some point, the lights are going to stop illuminating, but the beep will continue.
37:22And the players have to follow the beep around.
37:24And when it stops, they have to tell us which lamp would have been illuminated if the lighting had continued.
37:30When the beeps stop, you must pull the toggle off the lamp, which should now be illuminated.
37:35She'll make light work of this.
37:38I look at patterns most days.
37:42I look at ECGs and that's just a pattern on a line.
37:45So I'm thinking, OK, if we can just figure out the sequence, we've got this.
37:51It's all happening quite quickly as the lights start.
38:01I start counting them.
38:03So the going is one, two, three, miss three.
38:05And then I was thinking the next one would be one, two, three, miss four.
38:08Yeah, I've got this now.
38:10It's going to be three and miss five.
38:14Yeah, that's right.
38:19And then the sixth one, no light comes on.
38:23And I'm like, OK, right.
38:25Which one just went?
38:26But then the beeps carry on.
38:28So there's three more beeps.
38:29So I'm thinking, oh, yeah, I've got to continue the pattern around with no lights.
38:33So I'm counting the sixth lamp.
38:36I pull the toggle at the end.
38:40Oh, my God. I got it right.
38:44That's great. Look at that.
38:47I know.
38:48She really means business, Olly.
38:54Memorise the rule for each colour.
38:56Beside each colour is an instruction as to what move you need to take on a giant...
39:01It's a bit like a disco match.
39:03When you are ready, say, start the sequence.
39:06Then you will see a sequence of colours that will correspond to the rules that you have memorised.
39:11The lampshades will light according to the colour of the instruction.
39:15You must move through the grid using these rules.
39:18When the sequence finishes, you must stand in the corresponding square.
39:22I look at red and it says that's three steps to the right.
39:25So I tap my right side three times.
39:28And then blue's one to the left.
39:29Well, blue's one, one thumb.
39:31And then yellow, I've got a gold ring on.
39:33So I'm thinking, stand still.
39:35So put your hands in front, touch the yellow ring.
39:38Pink, well, it's two forward.
39:39And I've got two pink flowers on my shoes.
39:41Two flowers, two forward.
39:43Start the sequence.
39:53As the colours go on, I'm sort of tapping my side and doing probably really daft movements
39:59to try and remember what I should be doing for each colour.
40:02She follows the instructions to the letter.
40:05I get to a blue one and move one to the left.
40:09And then the lights suddenly start going really quick.
40:12I'm starting to think, oh, God, I'm not going to keep up with this.
40:18I see a green one and I take two steps back.
40:22And when I look up, there are no more lights.
40:26I didn't see anything after green, so I think I'm going to lock in at this one.
40:30I definitely followed those instructions right.
40:33That felt so quick.
40:36She did that in less than a quarter of the time she had.
40:396.35.
40:41Wow.
40:42Oh, no.
40:43I hope I've not fucked it up.
40:45On that last one, I think I, like, looked backwards
40:47and now I'm, like, thinking, oh, no, did I miss a colour?
40:50But it's too late now.
40:51Next up, Justin.
40:55Justin means business. He's put his glasses on.
40:58Yeah.
41:00Come on, then, watch the sequence.
41:02I know that this is the one that should be.
41:05But maybe it wasn't that one, maybe it's the one before.
41:07So I went for the one before.
41:09Oh, my God.
41:12Let's see how Nathan gets on without Joe.
41:15Look around, Nathan.
41:17I've really no idea at this point because I missed the first few lamps.
41:26I've just realised, going in sets of three and the number of lights it's missing is increasing.
41:33Good.
41:34Every time the amount that don't light up increases by one.
41:37And I won.
41:39That was fast.
41:40Well done, Nathan.
41:41I'm ready to start the sequence.
41:47Kink.
41:49Oh, snorted.
41:50I imagine Nathan being quite a good dancer.
41:52It's always the quiet ones, isn't it?
41:54I bet he doesn't mean Macarena or something.
41:57This is my final position.
42:16Well done, Nathan.
42:17So how's it that you're feeling now that we're done?
42:20I reckon I got the first part relatively quick.
42:24Yeah.
42:26Last to play the final game, sports management consultant, Joe.
42:31Thank you very much.
42:32That's the second time today you've saved me.
42:34Not at all.
42:35I look at you and I see someone who is totally, totally intelligent, but maybe doesn't always believe it.
42:42Or you're just really shy about it.
42:46I don't know, but I'd like to know.
42:49At school, I was called out in assembly because I got 100% on my SATs, which was obviously a brilliant achievement.
42:55But introverted, shy Joe was like mortified going out to the front to get this certificate.
43:01I know that I've carried that into my adult life.
43:04I'm always told, or like in meetings, speak more or, you know, just share what you're thinking.
43:13Sometimes I am holding back and I need to be more confident, so I'm aware of that.
43:18I think this is just really interesting for me to have some internal validation that actually I might be clever.
43:28Yeah.
43:29Me and my brother are very similar and he's very ambitious and he has achieved really great things.
43:38And I don't know if it's, I'm introverted, he's not so introverted.
43:44I'm female and he's male.
43:46And I think there's some slight differences there that mean he has gone after things.
43:50And, um, and has achieved great things.
43:59I think there's a real kind of value that can't really be replicated in believing in yourself.
44:07I've had the privilege to see probably more than the rest, how brilliantly you did.
44:13It was me picking up that phone and listening to what you'd actually heard.
44:17And thinking how simple what you'd told me was, but how complex what I heard was.
44:26You couldn't have done that if you weren't smart.
44:31Joe!
44:32I would never have applied for something like this ten years ago because I didn't want to own or celebrate what I can do.
44:40I shouldn't need the validation, but it would just make me realise, okay, like, people aren't making this up, Joe.
44:47You do have a different way of thinking and it's okay to celebrate that.
44:53It'd be interesting to see how she gets on now she's not with Nathan.
44:56One, two, three.
45:02Then we miss three.
45:04She's got it. She's got it.
45:06She's got the sequence.
45:07Then we miss six.
45:08One, two, three.
45:16Yes.
45:17Yes.
45:18Okay, she's done that with ample time, but if she really wants to get into the top three, she has got to smash this.
45:23Come on, Joe.
45:24Right.
45:25As I'm reading out the colours, I think this kind of reminds me of the cha-cha slide.
45:30Let's just go with it.
45:31Red, three steps to the right.
45:34Blue, one step to the left.
45:36And I actually feel quite confident with this rhyme.
45:40Start the sequence.
45:45Green is two steps back.
45:48Wow, two steps forward.
45:49Oh, my goodness, that's so quick.
45:51Blue is this one.
45:52Green is this one.
45:54Okay, right.
45:55Goodness gracious.
45:56That's quick.
45:57I think it's this one.
45:58Well done.
45:59Wow, wow, wow.
46:00Someone's through to the finals in Oxford.
46:03I'm gonna...
46:05Oh, no, press it.
46:10I'll go again.
46:12She's on the right spot.
46:13I think she's doubting herself.
46:14I'm really conscious of time, but I think I will kick myself if this isn't the right place.
46:20No!
46:21Let's just make sure it's accurate rather than fast.
46:24No, that's so not necessary.
46:26You were right, Jo.
46:29She has such a problem with self-belief and confidence, so...
46:33Agonising, then, to see...
46:35She's got to believe in herself.
46:36She's brilliant.
46:37She's got to believe in herself.
46:38She's brilliant.
46:41Red, three steps to the right.
46:43Green is two steps backwards.
46:45Blue is the step to the left.
46:48This is the quick bit.
46:49Two, one, two.
46:53Do the pattern again.
46:54I land in the same position, and I think two out of two isn't bad.
46:58Let's just go for this one.
47:00This is my final position.
47:02Come on!
47:03Yes!
47:08She got both parts of the challenge right, but she did take a little while, didn't she?
47:16I think all of us have done better than we thought we would do, so...
47:20That's got to be a positive.
47:23Absolutely.
47:24I'll still be a bit gutted if I go home next.
47:26How could you not be?
47:28I know.
47:29Hello, everyone!
47:32So, what did you think of the game?
47:34It was fun.
47:35I thought it was fun.
47:36Flashing lights, a bit of a disco.
47:38That's what I thought!
47:39Yeah, yeah.
47:40All I needed was a viennetta and a bottle of rosé.
47:42It's a normal Saturday night for me.
47:45OK, well, listen.
47:47Do you want the good news?
47:48You all completed the game right.
47:51So it's down to time.
47:53OK, I'm afraid.
47:56The first person going through to the final.
47:59And our top performer.
48:03It was...
48:05It was Oli.
48:08Are you pleased with that?
48:09I can't believe I'm in this final now.
48:11I am going to have to go home and chew on it for a bit.
48:14Well, well done.
48:15Yeah, thank you.
48:17You're crying!
48:18Yeah.
48:19I'm really sure to that, actually.
48:20Oh!
48:21In second place and going through to the final, it's...
48:25Nathan.
48:26And the last person going through to the final is...
48:39It's Justin.
48:42Well done, Justin.
48:44I'm so pleased that I've gone through.
48:45Yeah.
48:46Yeah.
48:47But, you know, it means someone's got to go home.
48:49It's horrible.
48:50But, you know, you've done so well to get here.
48:52You really have.
48:53Oh, Joe.
48:54Joe.
48:55Joe.
48:56Honestly, it's all good.
48:58I am glad that I at least got it right.
49:01And I'm gutted that I didn't just back myself the first time.
49:06Go on, smash it.
49:07This has to be a turning point now.
49:09To trust myself and go for it.
49:12Good game.
49:13It's true.
49:14Well played.
49:16I can't believe that.
49:18What a mess of emotions.
49:19On one hand, really happy.
49:20On one hand, kind of surprised.
49:22I'm absolutely gutted for Joe.
49:23Bless her.
49:24And you did the best in that round.
49:25I know.
49:26Isn't that mad?
49:28They don't know it yet.
49:29By the end of the competition,
49:31two of them will discover their IQ scores
49:34are in the top 1% of the country.
49:37Up there with Marie Curie and Apple founder Steve Jobs.
49:41Funny.
49:42I get compared to them all the time.
49:45Shit, the bed.
49:54Being a lorry driver,
49:55I am part of an exclusive little group called the Mother Truckers.
50:00Next time...
50:01Four-letter words.
50:02This could be dangerous for a priest, couldn't it?
50:03Hallelujah.
50:05Our next 12 hopefuls from the North East and Scotland.
50:10Contenders ready!
50:12I've got a small two-winged insect.
50:13Mosquito.
50:14I've got a mosquito.
50:15Wow!
50:16Out of four teams, there's a girl on three teams.
50:18So, statistically, there will be a girl in the final now.
50:20Oh, have a day off, love.
50:21I mean...
50:22I mean...
50:23I mean...
50:24I mean...
50:25I mean...
50:26I mean...
50:27I mean...
50:49But...
