00:00For the first time since 1985, the 49ers have lost back-to-back games.
00:27Can Joe Montana, after the pounding he has taken for 10 years in the National Football League, still be greatly effective?
00:36We were 6-5. We couldn't afford to lose another game.
00:40The way the 49ers are playing, they are non-contenders. They look ragged while they're losing or winning.
00:45The 49ers, for the first time since 1985, losing two in succession.
00:49As of tonight, Joe Montana is clearly number one. Steve Young tonight is clearly number two.
00:56It was back and forth, so I didn't see it as a dramatic moment.
01:00It was like, you know, Joe's playing. I think Bill probably said it like that, Joe's playing.
01:07Okay.
01:07I didn't know it was going to be the last time that I really made an impact in that season.
01:15For the 49ers, the willingness to overcome adversity, to recognize it, push through it, and you need your teammates to do the same, is the key to winning.
01:30They're right on the edge of losing their opportunity to be in the playoffs, unless they get on a protracted winning streak.
01:38Everybody's heart was that one heartbeat together. You have to work together as a team.
01:43Whatever the storm is, we're going to face it together.
01:45When Roger and Michael came out holding hands like unity, it was the offensive and defense are not at each other's throats no more.
01:57The emphasis of that gesture was kind of, in spite of everything, you've got to find a way to do it together.
02:08That's what building a great culture is all about, because football is about winning, and there's only one team that accomplishes that at the end of every season.
02:16Montana on a roll to his right, and Montana touchdown, he's in there.
02:31I remember playing that game against one of the best defensive backs ever, Darryl Green.
02:37And Montana, going deep for Rice, it's tipped, and it's caught, and Rice is out in front, and Darryl with a touchdown.
02:49If you know the 49ers, know that Bill really believed in the most key moments, it won't be the play that's called.
02:59It's going to be how we feel amongst the people that we're with.
03:03That family feeling went outside of the locker room. It went in every direction.
03:1049ers winning to go to 7-5.
03:14Back to throw, Montana.
03:16Out in front is Rice. He is there. He's got it.
03:19It'll be a touchdown for the 49ers, 96 yards.
03:25Picked off by Ronnie Lott.
03:2849ers at 8-5 record.
03:30Those who would write the 49ers off may be a little hasty.
03:32I agree. I think they're peaking just about right to do well in their division.
03:3649ers win it to stay alive.
03:39Well, the 49ers have defeated the Saints.
03:41The 49ers now 10-5 at clinch the playoff berth.
03:45We are on fire.
03:47Yeah.
03:49Oh, we won the division.
03:51Oh, okay.
03:51As of tonight, Joe Montana is clearly number one.
04:00Steve Young is clearly number two.
04:06I had a lot of times that I'm like, I don't know, I'm done.
04:10You know, commercially, I got to get away, you know?
04:13Those are moments of weakness of humanity.
04:24I've been taught a great truth that if there's a job that you want, then be the greatest in
04:34the world with the job you have.
04:38If I'm going to be the greatest, and I don't want to say backup quarterback because it's
04:42like I just want to throw up my mouth, but if I was going to actually do it, then let's
04:46be about it.
04:47I really became maniacal.
04:50Joe needs, I mean, I watched defenses for him.
04:53I reported blitzes.
04:55I did everything I could to be as useful as possible.
04:58We see him there in the sidelines, Steve Young giving the signal.
05:01I talked to Bill Walsh later, what he was thinking about, and he said, I just knew that
05:06I'd get the best of both of you, painfully, but you could make an argument that he did.
05:17Mom, Dad's here.
05:19He wants their breakfast.
05:21There she goes to breakfast.
05:22This is Walsh, 45.
05:30Jerry, why do you think that you hear so much how tough it is to be a coach's wife?
05:43During the season, I don't think there's any head coach and probably any assistant that is not
05:47thinking football like 24 hours a day.
05:49I do think the pressure was starting to get to my dad in a different way.
05:56He was living out of the house at that time.
05:58I think maybe we could just say for that season, he was living out of the house.
06:02His whole game plan was to eliminate distractions.
06:07And now my father was becoming a distraction.
06:10Another question surrounding the San Francisco organization.
06:13Will Bill Walsh come back and coach again next year?
06:16So now, something's got to pop.
06:19Something's got to have to happen here.
06:21The 49ers and the Vikings.
06:22The winner goes to the next round.
06:24The loser goes home for the season.
06:26I did have a conversation with Bill prior to that rematch in the playoffs with Minnesota.
06:32And the conversation basically was, Bill, I wish you all the luck in the world.
06:39But this is serious stuff.
06:41It's all on the line.
06:44On the field, Rice has always been able to score touchdowns during the regular season.
06:48But surprisingly, in the postseason, he loses his cut.
06:51My playoff game's been really disappointing to me.
06:56So I've got to prove something to myself.
06:58You know, I was always the type to take the blame.
07:01If we didn't win, I felt like I was the one to blame.
07:06Bill Walsh, he has producers on this team.
07:09It's his quarterback, Joe Montana.
07:11It's his wide receiver, Jerry Rice.
07:13Now, since they've won the Super Bowl, they've been in the playoffs three times.
07:17If you look at Montana, in three years, he hasn't thrown a touchdown pass.
07:21Then Jerry Rice, he's a big play guy.
07:23He didn't score a touchdown.
07:25His offense has to get in sync.
07:36Montana again.
07:38Touchdown to Jerry Rice.
07:40Rice moves in motion as Montana goes back to throw it.
07:45Rice.
07:47Touchdown.
07:54Rice.
07:56Rice's third touchdown of the day.
08:00I'll tell you something.
08:01Joe Montana is about as hot as a quarterback can be.
08:05He's about as efficient as a quarterback can be.
08:11Montana and Walsh on the sidelines.
08:13Grinning as each of them has sort of proved the point here today, I would think.
08:20Well, now they've got something else on their back.
08:26A coach.
08:27You get the monkey off the back and then you get on the back.
08:3149ers have won the playoff game and they'll go to Chicago to play the Bears in the championship
08:39contest next week and the right to go to the Super Bowl.
08:43Bruisers, man!
08:44Yes, yes!
08:45Bruisers!
08:46Everybody up!
08:47Let's go!
08:48Let's go!
08:49Let's go!
08:50I don't say very much in these things, and you know that, and especially the guys who've
08:55been here a long time.
08:56I remember this one, because Joe, he doesn't say much.
09:01No?
09:02He doesn't say much, but you could see the emotion there and what he was trying to deliver.
09:08The teams that have beaten another team by a big margin have come back the next week and
09:15played terrible, and that is not going to happen to this ball club.
09:18That's right.
09:19I ain't bullshitting.
09:20We've opened the door, we're going to go through it next week, and we're going to kick
09:25ass and take no f***ing prisoners the week after.
09:27That's right!
09:28I'm with you!
09:29I'm with you!
09:30In a lot of sports, for a lot of athletes and a lot of coaches, a lot of it is about
09:37them.
09:38One more thing.
09:39We've been through a lot, and Coach Walsh has been here since I've been here, and I'm
09:44glad I'm here to be part of his 100th victory champion.
09:47I didn't know.
09:48It was just that I think everybody was happy that he had reached that number, and we were
09:53all happy to be just a part and along for the ride with him.
09:58That, to me, was a great we move.
10:03That was Joe putting a lot of that BS aside and saying, Coach, this is for what we did.
10:12This is a game ball for you, for what we did.
10:17It was a first class move.
10:18We'll have a game plan, we'll have a light practice on the game plan, and then we're in
10:23business.
10:24We're going to Chicago, gentlemen.
10:25We're going to Chicago.
10:30Every detail is important.
10:32You know what the Bears think they're going to do?
10:37They think, in their own stupid way, they're going to intimidate us and knock us around the
10:42field.
10:43That's what they think.
10:45It's the only way they can fit.
10:47This game is going to be a damn great game from our standpoint.
10:51These Bears are counting on their favorite playoff ally, the Siberian Express.
10:57All we heard about was how cold it was going to be, and that it was Bears weather, and that
11:04this offense can't function in that weather.
11:07It's impossible.
11:08The storyline was the Big Bad Bears.
11:14The finesse-ass 49ers coming to town under these conditions.
11:20Minus 33 degrees.
11:23It's not cold enough out here.
11:26There's just no way.
11:28Oh, they left their hearts in San Francisco.
11:35Bill Walsh, he said, we're going to go into Chicago.
11:38We're going to win this football game.
11:40Then we're going to jump on an airplane, and we're going to head to Miami, where it's
11:45nice and warm.
11:48But he said, these motherfuckers got to live in this shit.
11:52His exact words.
11:55And we all looked at Bill like, are you serious right now?
11:58Let's go, Bubba!
12:09We knew that we had to strike early.
12:12Montana back to throw it.
12:14You're right.
12:16And I make this catch.
12:18And for some reason, I did like, almost like this ballet move, where I stepped forward,
12:23stepped back, and these guys collided.
12:26Yeah, well, Crom had good position.
12:28He just made a poor tackle, or Rice made him make that poor tackle.
12:32That kind of set the tone as to what we can and can't do in cold weather.
12:3849er touchdown from 61 yards away.
12:42Jerry Rice breaking away like that?
12:44If you're a fan, you're like, all right, this one's in the bag.
12:47The Rice touchdown.
12:49Yeah.
12:50You know, they talk about the 49er team being a finesse team.
12:55Clooney.
12:56Super Bowl!
12:57Number three, baby!
12:58Three times!
12:59Three times, baby!
13:00Three times, baby!
13:01So the final score, the 49ers 28, the Bears 3.
13:07They're going to the Super Bowl for the third time in a decade.
13:10Yeah!
13:11Yeah!
13:12Yeah!
13:13Yeah!
13:14Yeah!
13:15Yeah!
13:16Yeah!
13:17Yeah!
13:18Yeah!
13:19Yeah!
13:20Yeah!
13:21Bring it up!
13:22Bring it up!
13:23Yeah!
13:24Yeah!
13:25Yeah!
13:26Yeah!
13:27Yeah!
13:28Yeah!
13:29Yeah!
13:31This was after the game.
13:32I'm usually the quiet guy, but I couldn't let that moment pass me by.
13:38Whoever would have thought it, on the coldest day of January, the finesse-ass 49ers!
13:45The finesse-ass 49ers coming to the backyard of the Bears and kick ass!
13:57We were the type of team
13:59we would enjoy that moment.
14:04But we know
14:05that it's not done.
14:14They couldn't have picked a better place
14:16to have this Super Bowl.
14:17The weather's been beautiful
14:18and you can really feel the excitement, Mount.
14:20A win today would give San Francisco
14:22their third Super Bowl title this decade,
14:25ensuring the 49ers the designation
14:27as the team of the 80s.
14:30I knew the importance of this game
14:32because I wanted a Super Bowl ring
14:35and no one is going to remember the loser.
14:39That game was hugely important
14:41because if they don't win it,
14:43they're an afterthought.
14:44They won two and then they're done.
14:47But there was so much stuff happening so fast
14:49you couldn't fit it into a framework of legacy.
14:53If you lose, will this be your last game?
14:55Well, this is my last game.
14:56It has nothing to do whether I win or lose.
14:59I'm under contract
15:00and Ed DeBarlow and I have an excellent relationship.
15:02He's asked me to return.
15:04I'm looking at it closely,
15:05but it has nothing to do whether I win or lose.
15:07My dad was on his own during that season.
15:11But then at the Super Bowl,
15:13my mom and I and my dad all were staying together
15:17and my mom and dad got back together.
15:19Now if I am not back,
15:21it's because I've spent 31 years coaching
15:23and I have another life that I can move into
15:25and enjoy very much.
15:26I think my dad knew his job was a lot for the relationship
15:33and he might have been deciding to make a change
15:36and also just, like, check in on himself.
15:40Like, I think he was pretty exhausted.
15:44Getting on the plane, we're flying to Miami.
15:49Bill's up in first class and he's kind of by himself.
15:52And I said, you know, Coach, I just wanted to tell you,
15:55we get to Miami and we have this press conference.
15:58I'm going to announce my retirement.
15:59I can think of no better way to end a career.
16:03And he looks at me and he kind of looks back.
16:06And Super Bowl XXIII will be my last game as a 49er.
16:09He said, eh, no telling how this whole week goes,
16:12but you might not be the only one.
16:19I walked out on the field prior to the game
16:21and walked around the stadium
16:22became a little emotional all by myself,
16:25thinking this could be it.
16:27This could be my last game.
16:29I'm so f***ing nervous, I just wet myself.
16:39When Bill Walsh was Paul Brown's quarterback coach
16:42with the early Cincinnati Bengals,
16:43one of those he tutored was Sam Weich.
16:46Later, when Walsh became San Francisco's head coach,
16:48he brought Weich along as an assistant.
16:50So when Walsh looks across at Weich
16:53on the other side of the field this afternoon,
16:55he may see more than just an opposing head coach.
16:57He may, in fact, see a little bit of himself.
17:02I don't know what he's doing.
17:04He must be taking a nap.
17:05We're just moments away from the starting lineups
17:08here at Joe Robbie Stadium.
17:09I think Bill actually did this on purpose.
17:14He would always just relax and just take everything in.
17:18And I think it made everyone else relax, too.
17:21And now, the National Football Conference champion,
17:25San Francisco 49ers.
17:29You know, these pictures of Bill showing calmness.
17:32He could be relaxed in these moments.
17:35It has such an effect.
17:37The head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Bill Walsh.
17:40I want to demonstrate to the players you're totally at ease
17:46and totally relaxed and ready to go.
17:49What a start.
17:50The emotions on high.
17:55And we're about set to go with Super Bowl XXIII.
17:59To be honest, I might have stayed out late
18:01the night before the Super Bowl,
18:03and my dad might have been waiting up for me.
18:06He might have been tired the next day,
18:08and I felt bad.
18:10And this Super Bowl XXIII is underway.
18:15First down play, and Montana goes down.
18:19Roger Craig, a gain of only one as he's swarmed.
18:24And a mix-up, as Montana had trouble taking the snap,
18:28and Bill Walsh's team does not start well.
18:32The game was kind of mushy.
18:36It was just off.
18:37Fair catch, Taylor.
18:38That wasn't a very good fair catch signal.
18:40We weren't clicking.
18:42I think that had a lot to do with Sam Weiss.
18:44He was able to defend Walsh a little bit better
18:46than some of the coaches in the NFL
18:48just because of his familiarity with Bill Walsh.
18:51We were making mistakes.
18:53There was always something happening.
18:55Craig, 50,
18:59Thomas,
18:59and Cincinnati's Jim Scow recovers
19:04at the 41-yard line.
19:07Something like that, you know, you just keep battling.
19:09You're trying to keep it close.
19:11You're trying to keep it where you give the offense
19:13and Joe an opportunity.
19:15Down to the final minute 35 of the first quarter.
19:19Woods again, his fifth carry.
19:21Oh, is he hit?
19:22What a pop by Ronnie Lott.
19:26It was a woo hit, as Ronnie calls it.
19:29You know, wow, it was one of those.
19:32I would always listen for a certain sound
19:34because I know that Ronnie just hit somebody.
19:36The icky moment was where
19:39I was able to contribute to the game.
19:43It was a statement, you know,
19:45saying the defense is here, we're coming,
19:48we're hitting.
19:49It changed the momentum a little bit
19:51and we started getting the ball back to our offense.
19:56It was another one of those games
19:58where you just, like, played okay,
20:00but Jerry played really well.
20:02Here comes a bomb out of here.
20:04They're going to throw it deep.
20:05He throws deep.
20:08Weiss is wide open.
20:11Jerry was making it happen
20:12off of things that weren't obvious.
20:14After the catch,
20:15I'm sure the Bengals were thinking to themselves,
20:18what do we got to do?
20:20I don't think anyone can cover Jerry Rice man to man.
20:24We've got these guys bottled up
20:26and then here comes Jerry doing something Jerry-ish.
20:29Montana.
20:31To Rice.
20:32One-handed catch.
20:34Oh, my.
20:35And I think that was Jerry's moment
20:37where he became Jerry Rice.
20:42The throw is to Rice!
20:46Touchdown!
20:47My mindset was, you only get one shot for that Super Bowl ring.
20:55This ball is at the 22-yard line.
21:02We're all right.
21:03We're all right.
21:03Can you make this?
21:05How long is this?
21:0640 yards.
21:07The ball is put down.
21:08The kick is away.
21:09It is long enough.
21:10And it is...
21:11Go!
21:12All right!
21:13Free chair!
21:14And with 3.20 left to go,
21:16the Bengals take a 16-13 lead.
21:18And suddenly, we're down by a field goal.
21:22It's getting pretty close to the time to go.
21:25And now, with 3.10 remaining,
21:28the 49ers will have to go from just outside their seventh.
21:34I didn't think anything good was going to happen.
21:36There was no time.
21:38You had to go 94 yards.
21:40All you've got on defense!
21:42Let's go!
21:44You need a field goal to tie,
21:47a touchdown to win,
21:48and you don't have that much time.
21:52The 49ers have 3 minutes and 20 seconds of the season remaining.
22:04When it appears the 49ers will start deep in their own end.
22:10I'm standing in the huddle,
22:13and Joe walks in, and he goes,
22:14okay, let's do what the we got to do to go home.
22:17Right?
22:18And all of a sudden, he goes to Harris Barton.
22:20Yo, H, look at you over there on the front row of the bleachers.
22:25And the whole huddle turns around.
22:28There's John Candy.
22:30And it's like,
22:32this talking about John Candy,
22:34and here we are in the middle of a damn Super Bowl game.
22:37The guys know if something's wrong.
22:39If you're nervous, they know right away.
22:42I always just tried to be myself,
22:43and that's what I was doing with the Candy thing.
22:46Everybody seems to remember that.
22:47Montana, over the middle,
23:02looks great.
23:04Not wasting any time.
23:06No huddle.
23:09Here's Montana with another pass.
23:11Caught by the tight end, John Frank,
23:12and that's a first down.
23:15235 remaining.
23:16Montana, throws, sidelines.
23:18Rice, 30-yard line, out of bounds.
23:21All the lack of success previously in the day
23:24kind of melted away.
23:26We were in our element.
23:28We were in our zone.
23:31Watching this again,
23:32it puts you back into that mindset,
23:34how crucial every catch is.
23:37Not listening to the crowd,
23:39being able to block all of that out
23:41and just focus on what you do best.
23:53Bill's play calling was perfect.
23:56We got three timeouts.
23:58This is deja vu.
23:59Montana, over the middle, to Kling.
24:03Man, Joe just looked so smooth, didn't he?
24:06I think he loved ball games like this.
24:11I remember looking at that game
24:12from the sideline going,
24:13I'm glad I'm not covering those guys.
24:18Montana to Rice.
24:19He's in the clear.
24:25If John Taylor had made that block,
24:27I probably would have scored.
24:28I was blocking the cornerback,
24:31but I was losing the block.
24:32I said, just let him go.
24:34Because I didn't want to get called
24:36for no holding penalty or anything like that.
24:38And you could see,
24:39I'm pounding the ground like this.
24:42But that would have left more time on the clock.
24:44So, you know, things happen for a reason.
24:48Well, here's the situation.
24:49They're at the 10-yard line,
24:5039 seconds left.
24:51The 49ers can win it.
24:53Everybody thought the ball was going to be to me.
25:00Rice is flanked off to the right
25:02and comes in motion.
25:04Here I'm coming across in motion.
25:06I'm just putting on my best role ever.
25:09It's to Rice now.
25:10I could have been Denzel Washington at that time.
25:13Back to throw, Montana.
25:21I'm down for you, Nathan!
25:23You know, that was one of those feelings
25:35where as you were a little kid growing up,
25:37you know how you'd be in the street,
25:39if I make this catch, we win the Super Bowl.
25:41I can honestly say I lived it.
25:44Touchdown pass to John Taylor
25:45to this day, I can't believe.
25:47His first catch of the day.
25:49It was the only pass he caught in the game.
25:51And that was the one I needed to catch.
25:52But the biggest catch of the day.
25:59The 49ers with three Super Bowl victories
26:02in the 1980s.
26:11I was over at my friend's house
26:12and we jumped up
26:14and then we ran down to the El Camino Real
26:18in San Mateo with pots and pans.
26:22Cars out there in the middle of the street
26:24banging pots and pans.
26:25There was a party.
26:27We all won the Super Bowl that night.
26:29Three for three in the 80s
26:31for the San Francisco 49ers,
26:33the team of the decade.
26:35Teacher and pupil.
26:36And if only we could hear that conversation with you.
26:43I love you.
26:44I love you.
26:44Congratulations.
26:45I am happy to be here like I've never been.
26:48Believe me.
26:49Congratulations.
26:50This is yours.
26:51You deserve it.
26:52You know, there's a real respect there
26:54that couldn't be broken
26:56even by the game of football
26:57and a close Super Bowl loss.
27:00Oh, man.

27:37This baby was one.
27:39You know where this won?
27:40This was one eight weeks ago,
27:42or ten weeks ago,
27:43or 12 weeks ago into trenches.
27:46Yeah, man!
27:47Yeah, man!
27:50Oh, man!
27:53Anybody could see
27:55what it took to win this game you had to go there's the priest good thing he was there
28:02that's the niners we never say die we haven't said dies since 1981 believe it believe it
28:15everybody sold out this week everybody damn it's great isn't it the point had been made
28:23i think by bill and many of us there's us and there's them that's the way to do it thanks guys
28:32them is anybody not on the team and that us is a very very tight exclusive group
28:40and that created a loyalty that guys will take to their grave
28:52this is a tough moment in a way because
29:07is this the final game on the sideline for a great coach bill walsh
29:23he knew that he was gonna say goodbye and he knew it was over i wish he would have
29:41stuck around well that's a telling photo right there he knew he was about to be one of them
29:52i i relish that that picture but i don't have it hanging anywhere makes me sad
30:07he was exhausted but i think he was also um weirdly allowing the the guard to go down
30:16the guard to go down whereas he would never have done that before
30:22i mean he melted down in my arms he was like a teddy bear with a stuffing knocked out of him
30:29bill if you do leave i want you to know that every one of us is going to miss you
30:32you have done a fabulous job with this football team and never more so than in the final seconds here
30:37that's great you ready for it i guess okay
30:58oh my god no way that's crazy rice and ronnie rice and ronnie the 49er treat rice and ronnie the team
31:07that can't be beat catch that pass throw that block they're the team that can't be stopped rice and
31:12ronnie the san francisco i heard i heard you i remember that from a kid we asked what we would
31:20sing coming into the to the uh to the stadium yeah and you guys did it man i grew up with the 49ers
31:28in their dynasty but i was changing and so were they just four days after guiding the san francisco
31:3549ers to the third super bowl championship of the decade head coach bill walsh retired owner
31:40eddie devartolo announced defensive coordinator george seaford as the new head coach montana to throw
31:46he wants the end zone rice has got it touchdown 49ers bill is handed over like a ridiculous team to george
31:56this 49er team has everything and i don't know that it isn't the best team it's ever been
32:02touchdown 49ers well the regret i have if there is one is not coaching longer because i left
32:12the best team in football and the youngest team in football the superdome in new orleans the site
32:18super bowl number 24. black 59 razer black 59 razer
32:35back-to-back titles for the 49ers it's hard to do but they did it
32:39you're not even satisfied we want to get three that's right back to back to back back back
32:44congratulations
32:49after that super bowl eddie said look this was your team we're giving you a super bowl ring
32:55my dad got it looked at it and gave it to me this is yours
32:59i don't want it this is your ring you wear this to the bars
33:01he didn't want to even look at it so what did he do reinvented himself went back to stanford to
33:09become the head coach coaching at the college level is being an educator has redeeming value
33:15that's what's going to be doing unless it's usc
33:23montana again to throw montana in a hurry but chased out finally hit from behind the ball's loose
33:31and turnover maybe
33:35and montana's still on his hands and knees
33:38there was no three-peat and no joe for nearly two years
33:47you have joe montana injured unable to really play a season in addition to that you have steve taking
33:57over and making the team his team with montana out with an injured elbow for almost two seasons
34:03young has sparkled now i'm kind of getting the feel for it and i'm growing into it a little bit
34:09it's a position i've grown into and feel very comfortable with joe's trying to come back in 92
34:14that was my mvp year he gets healthy right at the end of the 92 season and plays the last game last
34:19half how good are the 49ers well they're so good that the greatest quarterback the national football
34:25league has ever seen tonight takes the field an attempt to become the backup quarterback
34:31again awkward dynamic as montana's throw is caught by jones
34:43i want to play i'm better than he is and i'm not gonna i want to play i don't want to end my career
34:49sitting here on the bench that's not how i envision it he told me that he wanted to to to be traded
35:01i said joe if you stay
35:07i'll bench steve
35:11he did everything he possibly could and i just said look your coach made a decision
35:16i understand and i get it but now i have to make a decision of what i want to do
35:22i don't want to leave but i want to play
35:31i went to joe's last game and it was an awesome send-off it was kind of sad in a way but everyone
35:42wanted to show their respect and love and admiration for for joe he deserved it i remember when he was
35:49playing for the chiefs and we'd all gathered watching joe drive for a game-winning touchdown
35:54joe montana archers a pass into the end zone
36:01but then here comes steve there's no way you can't be excited about what steve is about to do for
36:06the 49ers he had to win a super bowl or else he would never have been considered a great quarterback
36:13welcome to super bowl 29 three teams have won a super bowl championship four times this afternoon
36:19san francisco can stand all alone on top of the national football league world and a play fake
36:25young goes deep middle he's got jerry right touchdown 49ers first touchdown of a game
36:31comes after only a minute and 24 seconds that was special because i knew how important that was
36:38to steve young young throws jerry right touchdown and i wanted to win it for him now steve has the
36:47most touchdown passes in the super bowl game was six to see him reclaimed from where he came from
36:55to winning a super bowl i'm going to disneyland i'm going to disney world that's a great journey
37:03it's a great story the san francisco 49ers are the first team in the 75th year from the national
37:09football league to win five super bowl championships i thought that was just the first
37:35first but that was the only man you get the championship you get a ring and you get to go
37:43to disneyland and then they become synonymous so to be here is like you think about what would you do
37:49when you win the championship and it seems like as it comes true it's almost too good to believe
37:53there's this this moment that you climb diverse and and you're there and it was uh and this is the
38:00metaphor being in disneyland ism is the great metaphor but seeing that braid i have two thoughts
38:07one i'm on the top of ever since two i didn't get done what i thought i should do so both are true
38:13mr departmental can you talk to us for a second nope jack can you talk to us nope did you give mr
38:28edwards any money sir no comment speak to my lawyer please we were trying to get our licensing for a boat
38:38in shreveport and we went to the governor the governor said this is what i want for you to get
38:48you your license and it was money the bartolo was awarded louisiana's 15th riverboat gambling license
38:57last spring but then backed out of the deal after the fbi launched a full-scale probe of edwards
39:03was it smart getting into gaming no it was stupid what they got me for was not reporting a bribe
39:13san francisco 49ers ceo eddie debartolo jr has resigned the owner of the san francisco 49ers has
39:19resigned as shakeup now leaves debartolo's younger sister in charge of the 49ers today is one of the
39:24the lowest and i mean the lowest moments of my life there isn't a day go by that i don't remember
39:35and relish my life with the 49ers
39:44why a salary cap teams can't have all of the best players the example the san francisco 49ers the
39:52purpose of the cap is going to be that you can't have joe montana and steve young on your team
39:57it's just not going to be economically feasible a lot of the reasons that they put the salary cap in
40:03was because of what a great owner eddie was and how willing he was to go above and beyond to be able
40:07to provide all the necessary resources to be able to achieve and sustain a certain level of success
40:13because he spent the way he spent the other owner said well we can't compete with that
40:19that is his lasting legacy he changed sports with that if you can't put the money to where you think
40:27it will get you a championship then you're just like everybody else and every other owner you know
40:32people have asked me you would you go back there was a team for sale and i always say same thing been
40:40there done that don't need it
40:54someday i'd love to get all the men i've worked with together so my father told me one day
41:01he'd love to do a documentary on the 49ers and play that tune about san francisco with flowers in their
41:06hair and that just shows you he's a romantic god it'd be great it'd be great my dad was diagnosed
41:15with leukemia he was making connections again with these players how close i was to so many of those
41:23players so i it will never happen but i can give them the word i love you
41:32if you're going to san francisco
41:38i love you too coach be sure you have some clinics
41:46um yeah that that that that moment
41:53yeah that moment being with him it was
41:58just a very quiet moment
42:00i was saying i was saying goodbye to him and um but in total bill fashion
42:11as i started to walk away he he's hey hey wait a minute the last time i spoke to bill bill asked
42:19me something that just completely blew me away do you owe me any money
42:24i said i'm like are you serious right now yeah he said i want to know if you owe me any money
42:32so if you owe me some money you need to pay me now
42:39it was the guy in the bellman outfit trying to take luggage away diffusing the situation
42:45he wanted to try to make everything as right as he could with everyone
42:49he knew he had never seen it again and uh it was that was it was not an easy day
42:57it was not an easy day bill walsh died on monday after a long battle with leukemia
43:03bill walsh was 75 years old
43:07i'm sure he's still probably looking for that perfect game but i think in life we're all looking
43:15for that perfect game and even though you might not achieve it at least it continues to push you
43:21forward you know and probably he's coaching god right now knowing what i know about coach he's
43:29probably coaching god right now summertime will be a love in there
43:37that's right all right spiral good ball give me give me a few to warm up oh that was a warm up right
43:47there i'm only 48 i'm not i'm not 68. all right now we're starting to warm up
43:56joe was so pretty that joe would just hit
44:00joe would just throw the nicest little beautiful smooth the perfect spiral steve was so rotational
44:07different spin on the ball yeah he would almost be under the ball but both guys a lot of velocity
44:14on the ball and all you had to do is get open yeah if you got open they were going to get the ball to
44:19you it's not often i get to throw to the goat right here how could i never have thrown him a pass before
44:28one thing about being in san francisco and a part of the 49ers is whatever talent you had everyone
44:35saw the best of themselves here that feeling is why we all look back with such fondness
44:42you know that was that was the best of me and i think just about everyone around this league would
44:47agree that the 49ers are the best team in football the 49ers made each other better they made their city
44:54better and they made me better hey relax tom relax no man i'm throwing in jerry rice i gotta look like tom
45:01brady i'm telling you hey i can't look like some shitbag this is my childhood idol are you kidding me
45:06are you kidding me touchdown 49ers highway 101 belongs to jerry rice next exit hall of fame
45:14oh yeah i don't think i could have been what i was if i grew up rooting for the jets
45:25caught by clark cut down 49ers oh what a catch by rice cut down 49ers that was camelot that was camelot
45:35that was the greatest experience for everyone involved and the 49ers have won the super bowl
