The organization's board of governors met Friday to determine a response to the actor's conduct at the 94th Oscars, when he slapped Chris Rock onstage.

00:00Will Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars or any other Academy events for the next 10 years.
00:05The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 54-person Board of Governors landed on the ruling at a special meeting held Friday morning.
00:13Smith issued a brief statement through a spokesperson saying,
00:15I accept and respect the Academy's decision.
00:18This news comes 12 days after the actor slapped and yelled profanities at Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony,
00:25before taking home the Best Actor Oscar for his role in King Richard later that evening.
00:29Smith will retain the Oscar that he won for his role in King Richard and remains eligible for future Oscar nominations and wins.
00:36Until Smith announced one week ago that he was resigning as a member of the Academy,
00:40he was expected to face suspension or expulsion from the organization for having violated their standards of conduct.
00:46In a letter to Academy members sent after Friday morning's meeting,
00:49Academy CEO Don Hudson and President David Rubin said that they, quote,
00:53did not adequately address the situation in the room during the 94th Oscars,
00:57and apologized that they fell short and were unprepared.
01:00They went on to thank Rock for, quote, maintaining his composure,
01:03as well as the evening's hosts, nominees, presenters, and winners for their poison grace during the telecast.
