Transcript
00:01Welcome to Chateau DIY Win The Dream,
00:04the ultimate renovation showdown.
00:06Whose idea was this?
00:08Come on, mine.
00:09Take me over here.
00:11Over four thrilling weeks, creativity meets competition.
00:14That looks wicked, doesn't it?
00:16Perfect fit. Oh, my gosh.
00:18As determined duos battle it out to prove.
00:21Yay!
00:22I'm having an absolute nightmare.
00:23They've got the vision, skill and grit
00:25to win the ultimate prize.
00:27I haven't got a clue.
00:28I can cry. I can literally cry.
00:30The keys to this breathtaking French property.
00:34Set on the outskirts of a Normandy nature park,
00:38the property boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms,
00:42two salons, five additional rooms to renovate,
00:46perfectly pruned gardens, stunning outbuildings,
00:49its very own orchard and even a historic bread oven.
00:53It's a lot to play for.
00:55And if we lose, I'll be fuming.
00:57Three heats and a grand finale where only the best will rise.
01:01Oh!
01:03All the pairs have to do is show they have the renovation know-how
01:07to impress me and various guest judges from Chateau DIY.
01:10I think this is really creative.
01:13What a transformation.
01:15In weekly challenges designed to push their creativity and skills to the limit.
01:19The clock is ticking!
01:21Win the week and they secure their spot in the grand finale.
01:25The dream is real, the stakes are high.
01:27This is Chateau DIY Win The Dream.
01:39Welcome to Heat One.
01:41Let's meet this week's pairs competing for a place in the grand finale.
01:45Oh, my God!
01:46It's so beautiful!
01:48Isn't it amazing?
01:49Yeah.
01:50It's beyond our wildest dreams, really,
01:51because you just never think an opportunity like this is going to present itself.
01:55Wow!
01:56Look at that balcony.
01:57It's been such a build-up to get here.
01:59And now we see it, and there's all these ideas flying around.
02:03Wow!
02:04Look at this, how nice!
02:07We are feeling a bit excited, a bit of nervous, mixed bag of both.
02:13Looks so beautiful!
02:15The property is amazing.
02:18It's really lovely.
02:20This is how we imagined our dream home going to be.
02:23Oh!
02:24Oh, wow!
02:25Look at the little Juliet balcony.
02:28We are very excited.
02:29But also, I think a bit of apprehension is always good.
02:32You know, focuses the mind, sharpens the chisel.
02:35Yeah.
02:36Oh!
02:37Isn't it gorgeous?
02:38Wow.
02:39Look at the chisel.
02:40Wow.
02:41Yeah.
02:42Absolutely stunning.
02:43We are, like, quietly competitive, aren't we?
02:46Yeah.
02:47Yeah.
02:48I don't like to lose.
02:49So, to have this opportunity in front of us is incredible.
02:56Hello, and welcome to Win The Dream, where you'll be competing to win this beautiful property behind me.
03:02You'll look very excited, which I'm pleased to see.
03:05But, unfortunately, it's not going to be that easy.
03:07You've got to prove to me and the various judges that you've got the ability and the skill to manage and maintain a period property like this.
03:15You now look slightly petrified.
03:17It's going to be great fun.
03:19For your first challenge, I'd like you to create a room that's a social hub for the property, where guests can gather and, in addition, create an event space where you can earn money.
03:31Yeah.
03:32Ooh.
03:33Okay.
03:34Your entertainment space must include a custom-built bar.
03:37Ooh.
03:38That's good.
03:39Nice.
03:40Yeah.
03:41Overall, I'm looking for concept and creativity, techniques and functionality.
03:44And I really want you to play to your strengths.
03:47If you've got a skill set, I want to see it in your designs.
03:50Yeah.
03:51Now, to make things slightly more interesting, I'm going to put you into two teams of four.
03:57Ooh.
03:58Oh, indeed.
03:59Ooh.
04:00So, Sam and Elizabeth, I'm going to put you with Edward and Nell.
04:03Ooh.
04:04Good.
04:05And Sarab and Fernando, you'll be with Xavier and Tasha.
04:08Happy with that?
04:09Yes.
04:10Now, are you ready for your first challenge?
04:11Yes.
04:12Are you sure?
04:13Yes.
04:14So, for this challenge, we're giving each team €1,000 to complete their renovation.
04:19Your briefs and tools are waiting in your rooms.
04:22Your time starts now.
04:24Chateaus can be costly to run, which is why many are businesses to bring in an income.
04:30Ooh.
04:31Wow.
04:32This is nice, isn't it?
04:33Oh, it's quite big.
04:34It is quite big.
04:35So, our pairs have been put into teams to renovate these disused garages, and have been given
04:40just six days to do so.
04:42Oh, okay.
04:43This is cool.
04:44This is good.
04:45In Burgundy, a young parent, Zav, an advertising manager, and Tash, who works in e-commerce.
04:52So, we have a little girl, she's two and a half, and a little seven-month-old baby boy.
04:57So, obviously, it's not easy to leave them, and it was really hard for us to kind of make
05:01the decision to just come and do this, but it's for them as well.
05:04Yeah.
05:05It's for all of us.
05:06Teamed up with them in Mint are husbands, Fernando, who works as cabin crew, and Saurab,
05:10a software engineer, who dream of living in France.
05:14The experience of moving here in France, I think it's something we've been basically
05:18dreaming of for a long time, and maybe it's the time now that it will come through.
05:25The couple met 13 years ago, and now run a successful upcycling business.
05:29Cheers.
05:31But their dream would be to open a workshop warehouse while renovating the chateau.
05:36That eventually is our dream, that we're going to do a holiday retreat, so people can
05:40come and see that the house was done with the DIY skills at D1.5.
05:44Yeah.
05:45And they can actually learn the skills, they can learn how to do furniture upcycling.
05:50So, once we move into the property, that's what we have plans for the future.
05:54I just think it's nice to have the zones.
05:57Yes.
05:58Tash is kicking things off with ideas about the room's layout.
06:02I think we have this really nice wall at the back, so we obviously want to make a bit
06:05of a feature of that.
06:06It seems to me like this is more of a natural seating area.
06:09Coffee table over there.
06:11Yeah, it could be a coffee table and, like, a settee or...
06:15A nice little nook to, like, read and chill in.
06:19That corner, we could do a little bit of gaming area.
06:22I think having some games is a really good idea.
06:24Maybe we can reuse this for the bar area.
06:26Should we check if it works?
06:28Let's have a go?
06:29Yeah.
06:30It does.
06:31Cupboards underneath it, a new splash back.
06:34Yeah.
06:35We just need to think about how we're going to build the bar.
06:37We can find an old pallet.
06:38Yeah.
06:39Break them in, make a bar out of it.
06:41That's a really good idea.
06:42Then we would need to build the bar out to allow room.
06:46And then you can come round here, you're at the bar.
06:49Serving the drinks is your...
06:51Yeah.
06:52Right, guys.
06:53It seems like we have a plan.
06:54Should we just crack on?
06:55Yes.
06:56Let's go.
06:57Let's go.
06:58I love this wall.
07:00Nice solid beams as well up here.
07:04Next door teamed up for their first challenge are the Yellows' Sam,
07:08a safety officer, and Elizabeth, a jeweller.
07:10This couple have been married for 18 years.
07:13We work really well together as a team.
07:15We communicate well, don't we?
07:17We often seem to know what each other's thinking,
07:20and I think that's partly because we've been married for so long.
07:23In fact, words are sometimes not needed.
07:25It's just a look.
07:26Yeah.
07:27Or a noise.
07:28A little whistle you do sometimes.
07:29Yeah, yeah.
07:30And we understand each other.
07:31Yeah.
07:32Nice bit of metal here.
07:33Oh, yeah.
07:34With Ed, a chef, and Nell, a waitress.
07:37And the doors open out.
07:38We should definitely make a feature of that.
07:40This Navy duo from Surrey have been married for four years.
07:43Oh, is it like a bag each?
07:45Let's have a look.
07:46We want to live a bit of a more simple life,
07:50work on the land, eat the food that we make,
07:53and raise our daughter in a kind of more chilled environment
07:57in some sunshine.
07:59I think it'll change our lives.
08:00The pair first met while working in the hospitality industry.
08:03A couple of tape measures and some chisels I've got in here.
08:06And are hoping the skills learned from their day job
08:09will pay off for this challenge.
08:11I'm feeling quite happy about the challenge.
08:13I had a tenancy on a pub a few years ago,
08:15so I've renovated a bar.
08:18And I have worked behind a bar for a number of years,
08:20so I think I know what you need on one.
08:23Yeah.
08:24But what theme are we going to go for?
08:25Are we going to go kind of English pub vibes?
08:27Are we going to go kind of French?
08:30We're in a chateau in France.
08:31I think we need to go French.
08:33Yeah, absolutely.
08:34French rustic.
08:35Kind of French rustic, yeah.
08:36Rustic's quite nice, cos that leans to the walls.
08:38Do you notice the ornate panelling here?
08:40Yeah.
08:41Could we continue that along on this bare wall?
08:43Oh, that's cool, yeah.
08:44That is primed to be panelled.
08:45It is really nice.
08:46Would we do the three squares?
08:48Yes.
08:49So, shall I just draw this on the wall and like a rough...?
08:52Do it. Yeah, go on.
08:53Oh, excitement!
08:56And then...
08:57Oh, my God, I should have used a ruler.
09:00Elizabeth has an idea about how they can hit the brief
09:03by bringing in some money with their space.
09:05What do you think about, like, an honesty bar?
09:07I think that's a good sensible idea, yeah.
09:08I think that's a really good idea.
09:10If we have the both options, though...
09:12Yeah.
09:13How it is normally in the day is like an honesty bar...
09:15Yeah.
09:16...that then moves into a room that you can have cheese and wine.
09:19Yeah, I like that.
09:20You're doubling up there.
09:21Yeah, absolutely.
09:22Multi-purpose.
09:23Is there a way of being really clever with it?
09:25Do we...?
09:26Could the bottom of the bar pull out
09:28and the top of the bar stay fixed to the wall?
09:31Yeah.
09:32And then you'd be able to get behind it.
09:33Yeah.
09:34You know, serving away and whatnot.
09:35If we could work something out like that.
09:36Yeah.
09:37So, like, what are they called?
09:38The cupboard at the bottom
09:40and you put your grandma's plates on.
09:42Welsh dressers.
09:43Welsh dressers.
09:44So, you can have the bar on this side here
09:46where you've already got a bit of an alcove,
09:48a bit of a space.
09:49Keeping the whole of that space there.
09:51So, would you put the Welsh dresser right up against there?
09:54I think maybe it would start where the lighting is,
09:57pin the Welsh dresser to the wall
09:59and then the bottom of it's on wheels and comes out
10:02and then when it's not in use, it just looks completely normal.
10:04I like that idea.
10:06I think, really, the next step is seeing what furniture we can find.
10:09Agreed.
10:10Because that starts it off, doesn't it, for us?
10:12Yeah.
10:13Sounds really good.
10:14Let's do it.
10:15To the Bracant.
10:16To the Bracant.
10:17Beyond the formal gardens and next to the Chateau's orchard
10:22are two outbuildings that are included in the phenomenal prize.
10:25I have converted one of these outbuildings
10:27into a workshop for the contestants,
10:29stocked with all the tools and basic supplies
10:31they will need for the competition.
10:33Ed, on the Navy and Yellow team, is on the power tools.
10:38So we're just going to cover this door in because we're going to put the bar across here.
10:50So, just building this little frame out here, I'm going to cover it with OSB
10:54and then whatever I'm told to clad it in or paint it with will be how it's finished.
10:59The Burgundy and Mint team have both hit the road to go shopping.
11:05Fernando and Saurab are off to source some pallets for their bar.
11:10OK, let's go.
11:12While Xavier and Tash are looking to find some hidden gems at the local Bracant.
11:18Sam and Ed are making a start on the panelling.
11:22So far, so good. It's looking alright.
11:29Now this looks productive.
11:31We've finally got on the tools, have we?
11:33Yeah, yeah, finally.
11:35I look forward to this bit.
11:36What are you making?
11:37Panelling to go on that wall.
11:39Nice. What's this material you're using? Solid pine?
11:42Yeah, we just think that gives the depth that we need
11:45and it's just a bit more eco-friendly.
11:47Yeah, it's a nice sustainable material as opposed to MDF,
11:50which is not great for the planet.
11:52It's very on trend at the moment panelling, isn't it?
11:53It is, yeah.
11:54You're seeing a lot of interior design mags and stuff.
11:56Yeah.
11:57Do you think it's appropriate for a French chateau garage?
11:59I hope it is, to be honest.
12:01I think the fact that we're trying to echo what's there already
12:04is the rationale behind putting it there, you know.
12:06And we want the relaxed, entertaining, a room vibe as well.
12:10I think that'll bring it.
12:11Is this something you've done at home?
12:12I've done a very limited amount of panelling on the window seats.
12:16Very limited panelling.
12:17I'm just getting used to some of the equipment, to be honest.
12:20So this is going to test me a bit.
12:21We are back in North West France, where two teams are battling it out to convert two garages
12:34of this huge chateau into entertaining spaces, which must be complete with a functioning custom-made bar.
12:43While the navy and yellow team have started on their wall panelling,
12:47the burgundy and mint team have headed out shopping.
12:50Yay!
12:51Result.
12:52Xavier and Tash have already purchased supplies.
12:55We are in the middle of our...
12:57At a recycling centre, apparently.
12:58A recycling centre.
12:59We can sand these down, repaint them, and now we can go and see what else we can find.
13:04Yeah.
13:06But it's not going to plan for Fernando and Saurabh.
13:09No.
13:10It doesn't work.
13:12The guy said he was going to be here, but he's nowhere to be seen.
13:14What do we do?
13:15Yeah.
13:16So, did you try to write him?
13:17I wrote.
13:18I said we are here.
13:19But no reply yet.
13:21They've sourced some pallets for the bar, but the seller has gone missing.
13:26Well, keep an eye on your phone.
13:28Yeah, I'm keeping an eye on...
13:29Is there a possibility to call him?
13:31No.
13:32Do you want to knock next door?
13:34Or maybe that house?
13:35Next door, this one.
13:36There's a bit of frustration because we said, can you come now?
13:39He said, c'est bon.
13:40We understood this.
13:41Yes, you can come.
13:42And now we are here.
13:44Looks like he's saying, only come at 3.30.
13:49We can't afford to waste time like this.
13:51So, I'm just going to message C if you can take the pallets,
13:54and then we can come back and pay or pay online.
13:57Oh, we just translate.
13:58It says the boss is not in the side.
14:01Translate into French.
14:03Last message to him and then we're going to have to move on.
14:06If the pair can't take the pallets,
14:08they'll have to have a total rethink on their bar design.
14:11We can't waste time.
14:12Wait and then we'll see.
14:15Meanwhile, Nell and Elizabeth of the Navy and Yellow Team
14:18have arrived at the local Brocante.
14:20Let's see what we can find.
14:21Absolutely.
14:22I'm excited, isn't it?
14:24Yeah, me too.
14:25I think it should be good, you know.
14:26Yeah, right.
14:27I'm excited.
14:29Yeah.
14:30What were so...
14:31Cheers.
14:34Top of their list is a Welsh dresser
14:36that they want to repurpose into a bar.
14:3840 euros.
14:39I don't love it.
14:40Ooh!
14:41Ooh!
14:42Oh, my goodness.
14:43Look.
14:4420.
14:45But the room's not big enough, unfortunately.
14:46I know.
14:47How sad.
14:48How sad.
14:49Put that on.
14:50I think...
14:51Do you know what?
14:52It really could work.
14:54If we stuck this like a cupboard to the wall,
14:57Sam tiled the top and the back,
14:59I think it's a strong contender.
15:01Yeah.
15:02That's really nice.
15:03I think it is.
15:04Yeah.
15:05Okay.
15:06Should we go and sort buying the glasses and games and things?
15:07Yeah.
15:08Let's do it.
15:09Ah, perfect!
15:10You wanted bash that?
15:11I do!
15:12I want a battered table.
15:13You should get that.
15:14Yeah.
15:15Get that.
15:16Texas Hold'em.
15:17I really like this.
15:18Can we just get this?
15:19Let's just get it.
15:20I like that.
15:21I've found a curtain pole for our stairs.
15:25They'd look really nice, Nell, on the bar.
15:28Loads of ice in them with bottles of beer.
15:30I think you're right.
15:31Elizabeth and Nell seem to have bagged quite a few bargains.
15:3525.
15:36Oh!
15:37Okay.
15:38Merci beaucoup.
15:39Merci beaucoup.
15:40Merci, monsieur.
15:41Au revoir.
15:42Merci.
15:43Now for the show-stopping Welsh dresser.
15:46Ah, 80 euros.
15:49Brilliant.
15:50Yeah.
15:51Merci beaucoup.
15:52Merci beaucoup, monsieur.
15:53I think the boys will be really happy.
15:55I do.
15:56We can adapt bits.
15:57We can work on them.
15:58Yeah, I think we've got a good amount of stuff.
16:00And for 105 euros, we're winners.
16:02Oh, my absolute bargain.
16:03Back over with Fernando and Saurab.
16:07So, just waiting for the reply.
16:09And then we're going to have to take the decision.
16:12They have some good news about the pallets.
16:14Ooh!
16:15Yes!
16:16We just replied.
16:17We're going to get...
16:18No!
16:19We're going to ping it through the letterbox.
16:20Let's do that.
16:21Woo!
16:22Woo!
16:23Woo!
16:24Woo!
16:25So, should we start loading?
16:27Oh, my God.
16:34Successful.
16:35Pallets secured.
16:36And their team mates seem to be doing well at the Bracante.
16:39It's covered my cheapest.
16:40This is incredible.
16:41It won't be expensive, shall we?
16:45This would be really good for the chess table.
16:47This is the biggest mirror they have.
16:48I think it's a really cool statement piece for the space.
16:51It is very big.
16:52It would cover the back of the bar.
16:54And it's not the only thing Xavier has spotted.
16:57That looks long enough, too.
16:59I think that's super cool.
17:01It's so cool.
17:02Excuse me.
17:03These pieces of wood, are they for sale?
17:04I can't sell it to them.
17:05Okay.
17:06Who can?
17:07That's my boss.
17:08Where's your boss?
17:09Xavier wants to purchase the Bracante display rack.
17:12Do you think we can just buy one of these?
17:14I would assume so.
17:16To repurpose the wood for their bar worktop.
17:18She might take a little bit of...
17:20Encouragement.
17:21...haggling and encouragement.
17:22I just spoke with my money down and said it's not for sale.
17:25That is so disappointing.
17:26That's, yeah.
17:27Depressing.
17:28Never mind.
17:29Oh, God.
17:30That was such a nice find.
17:33We'll have to just go back with what we have.
17:35Oh, perfect.
17:36Perfect.
17:39Cheers.
17:40Bye-bye.
17:41Au revoir, you too.
17:42The pair have spent 183 euros of their 1,000 euro budget.
17:52Back at the chateau, the shopping teams are returning with their purchases.
17:57One team are starting to see some real progress.
18:01Hello.
18:02Hi.
18:03We are back.
18:04Oh, my gosh.
18:05Oh, wow.
18:06Well done.
18:07What do you think?
18:08Look at this.
18:09Love it.
18:10Have a look.
18:11It's so nice.
18:12It's really good.
18:13It's perfect.
18:14Has it got the one factor in it, don't you think?
18:15Yeah.
18:16It looks great.
18:17Yeah, it's really lovely.
18:18And they can now get to work on their modular bar.
18:22It's great.
18:23It's fantastic.
18:24I really think we can make that work.
18:29With their first day done, there's now only five days left for our teams to transform these
18:34chateau garages into fully functional entertainment spaces.
18:38We've bought loads of great stuff, Nal and I.
18:40Getting some panelling onto the walls itself.
18:43Yeah.
18:44I think that was probably my highlight.
18:46My next highlight is obviously when the girls came back with all the things that you bought.
18:49Yeah.
18:50Oh, thank you.
18:51I can't believe how much you've got.
18:52I know.
18:53You've got a lot for the money.
18:54And the price as well.
18:55I know.
18:56And the panelling looks fantastic.
18:57Yeah.
18:58Well done.
18:59Oh, wow.
19:00What?
19:01Oh, it looks good.
19:02Sam and I have worked really well together.
19:03We've got, you know, we've really bonded.
19:04We almost had a manhug at one point.
19:05Oh, cute.
19:06Yeah, I know.
19:07Are you going to swap partners?
19:08No.
19:09Okay, cool.
19:10Just checking.
19:11Just checking.
19:12Wait, wait, wait.
19:13Go slow.
19:14Go slow.
19:15Because I've got to go down the steps still.
19:16It felt a bit slow.
19:17Yeah.
19:18We're also gutted not to get hold of that oak.
19:19Absolutely gutted by that oak.
19:20Top for the oak bar.
19:21Oh!
19:22It's okay.
19:23Oh, my God.
19:24Can't get the star.
19:25So today, I think we feel like we're not as fast as we would like to have been, but
19:34we're going to have a very productive day tomorrow, and then we'll be on track.
19:38Wow.
19:39Isn't it amazing?
19:40Yeah, it looks...
19:41There was a few things that obviously made us slower today.
19:44It was difficult because it was a bit disjointed because Fernando and Sarab were out this morning,
19:49and then we were out this afternoon, and we haven't spent the day together as a team,
19:52so we've had very minimal time together with them, which has also been a bit...
19:56It's felt very disjointed.
19:57It's made the communication a bit more difficult, hasn't it?
20:00Yeah.
20:01In different places at different times.
20:03We tried as hard as we could.
20:04We have been slowed down along the way, but we have obviously made the most of what we could.
20:09Both teams are now well underway into day two of their first challenge, transforming the Chateau garages into amazing entertainment spaces, complete with a functioning bar.
20:23Today, we are really ready to build the bar from pallets.
20:26As a team, we decided that it makes sense to keep as many people here today doing some actual DIY as possible, because time is not on our side.
20:34That's not laughter.
20:36We can hear through the wall. The other teams have done quite a lot of sawing and hammering and screwing, so we're not there yet.
20:41We've just laid our foundations and pushed on from here.
20:44This morning, I'm feeling good, actually. Nell and Elizabeth got a great find yesterday in this sideboard.
20:50Here you on.
20:51And it's my task today to try and upcycle that into a bar.
20:55OK.
20:56I'm absolutely chomping at the bit to finish the panelling. I want that all up as soon as possible.
21:02Sam and Elizabeth are no strangers to DIY, having previously renovated three properties, and doing this on a Chateau scale has always been their dream.
21:11Moving to France has been in my heart for a very long time.
21:15I never thought we'd have the opportunity to perhaps live into something like this.
21:19You can tell the difference already, you know, when you look at that.
21:21I think if we won this property behind me here, I think that would just change everything.
21:26I could see myself not working full time in England anymore, moving over here.
21:31Yeah.
21:32And running a business together.
21:33Yeah.
21:34Before the team crack on with the bar and finish off the panelling, Elizabeth and Sam have had an idea for painting their room.
21:42We've had a bit of a think about the colour scheme.
21:45Yeah.
21:46Like the French doors that we've seen.
21:48Yes.
21:49Yeah.
21:50But to contrast that green, going for like a burgundy colour.
21:53Notice in the local area, the street lighting and the street furniture is painted burgundy.
21:58And then still stick with the cream for the floor.
22:00I like it.
22:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:02Cool.
22:03I think that we should go and get paint.
22:05We can crack on getting some bits done.
22:07Yeah.
22:08Next door.
22:09How you doing, darling?
22:10You all right?
22:11Yeah, I'm just trying to open this paint.
22:13It's not just colour that Tash is adding to their space.
22:16I'm just going to put some sand into the paint just to give it a little bit of texture.
22:21It will help to cover up any imperfections, any screws, anything like that.
22:24I actually just took this sand from the barn.
22:26What more could you want?
22:27Free sand.
22:28It looks good.
22:29Enough texture.
22:30It has loads of texture.
22:31It looks great.
22:32Down at the workshop, the mint team are finally making progress with the pallets for their
22:41bar.
22:42Hi.
22:43Hello.
22:44Now you're talking my language.
22:47Pallets.
22:48I love these things.
22:49Dare I ask how much you paid for the pallets?
22:51Two euros each.
22:52Two euros?
22:53Yes.
22:54Okay.
22:55That feels cheap.
22:56So I wanted to barter a bit, but...
22:59You were going to negotiate on two euros.
23:01I'm looking for the deal.
23:02Yeah.
23:03Always looking for the deal.
23:04Yeah, you have to save the budget, no?
23:06So does that mean the budget is looking good?
23:08We're on budget.
23:09I think we spent around 170, 180 euros.
23:12I think we're doing okay.
23:13Okay, what else have you bought?
23:15We bought some paints because we're going to...
23:17For this bar, we came up with an idea the whole team.
23:20We're going to do a distressed look.
23:22We're going to try to take out as much as printers from the wood,
23:25and try to make it smooth, and then we're going to paint it.
23:28We all agreed.
23:29It's a good idea that in the back wall,
23:31it's more like a brick, rustic look.
23:33Now, the rustic look isn't an excuse for it being less time-intensive, right?
23:38Uh...
23:39We're trying to make it smooth.
23:42Because I fear there is a fine line between the rustic look and shabby chic,
23:46and oops, we've run out of time and money.
23:48We're not going to cross that line, are we?
23:49No, no, no, no, no.
23:50So we're going to still paint it.
23:52Again, there's going to be sanding to blend in the paint together.
23:55Like, somewhere you'll see the wood, somewhere you'll see the colours.
23:58We don't want to hide the original beauty of the palette,
24:01but still we want to incorporate colours together.
24:03Celebrate these beautiful bits of nature.
24:05Yes.
24:06You've got a lot to do.
24:07You're slightly behind schedule.
24:09I look forward to seeing what you get up to by the end of the day.
24:12No problem.
24:13Thank you, mate.
24:14The Burgundy and Mint team have spent over €200 of their €1,000 budget.
24:21Meanwhile, Sam from the Yellow and Navy team has nearly finished the panelling.
24:25Looking good, looking good, yeah.
24:27Just as Nell and Elizabeth return with paint supplies,
24:30having spent €305 of their budget.
24:33And they're wasting no time getting it on the garage doors.
24:37It's exciting, this.
24:38I'd love to give it a little stir.
24:42Do you know?
24:43Yeah, yeah.
24:44That's the colour I think is going to go well with it.
24:46I'd love to give it a little stir.
24:47Lovely shade of green, that.
24:48I really like it.
24:49Nice and light.
24:50Yeah, no, I like it.
24:51Yeah.
24:52I think that's beautiful, that.
24:53Let me just stand back and look at it.
24:54That's nice.
24:55Just thinking, if you're walking into this room, you're going to see that.
24:58It's lovely.
24:59It's going to jump out at you.
25:00Yeah.
25:01I think it's really good.
25:02Yeah, perfect call.
25:03As part of this week's challenge, the teams must include a bar in their entertainment space.
25:08The number you have called is not recognised.
25:11Mauritian Ray's Xavier can speak French, so he's the best person to try and hunt down Oak to complete their bar.
25:17So I'm just racking through the numbers for the nearest sawmills to us.
25:21You are pretty nearby.
25:22Let's try you.
25:23I'm now on about ten sawmills down with no luck.
25:25No one's even answered the phone yet.
25:27Because we fell in love with a piece of wood at a brocon that they wouldn't sell to us.
25:32And we just think it would be a really good feature point for the bar area and for the entire room.
25:38Hello.
25:39Hello.
25:40Hello.
25:41Hello.
25:42Hello.
25:43Hello.
25:44Hello.
25:45Hello.
25:46Hello.
25:47Hello.
25:48Hello.
25:49Hello.
25:50Hello.
25:51Hello.
25:52Hello.
25:53Hello.
25:54Hello.
25:55Hello.
25:56Hello.
25:57Hello.
25:58Hello.
25:59Okay.
26:00So he says there is a place literally opposite him and it just so happens that this place is actually like walkable distance down the road.
26:06It was not easy to fumble through that conversation.
26:13If my friends were slightly more advanced I could have pushed a bit harder.
26:31more advanced i could have pushed a bit harder he suggested a sawmill about 20 minutes from here
26:38half tempted to make an executive decision but i feel like i should probably inform
26:42fernando and sarah beforehand really while xavier heads back to the chateau to regroup with his
26:47teammates over in the workshop ed on the navy and yellow team is making good progress with their
26:53modular bar now this looks interesting hello how you doing i'm good how are you i'm all right yeah
27:02i'm getting there now this isn't a technique you see every day i'm really intrigued as to why you're
27:06using it this is a really ancient technique um it's called a french cleat and the reason i've chosen to
27:13do this is because i want to be able to fix to the back of the unit so you can't see any of the fixings
27:18from the front but i still need to be able to hang it to the wall so what i've created here is this
27:24profile here so this bit will fix to the unit and then there will be the mirrored version of it which
27:30will be fixed to the wall and the two just slot together like that that is super satisfying isn't
27:38it originally these old pieces of furniture had no fixings visible because i used to use these beautiful
27:43methods didn't they yeah so actually you're replicating that in the modern way absolutely
27:47so we don't want to see these these horrible screw heads being sensitive to the original
27:52building i like it yeah right leave you to it thanks very much all right hello hi uh hi how are you
27:59bad news on the oak front i went to the place that we were kind of recommended to go to
28:03they said they didn't have anything like that so guys let's drop the idea because it's becoming
28:07too complicated so let's not waste time shall we just build it from scratch okay not wanting to give
28:13up on his french oak top i was just looking at the and ignoring fernando's request of building a
28:17bar from scratch xavier has one last lead to follow there's loads of outbuildings here and we haven't
28:23even checked in any of them yet uh glocked and check all the last of the outbuildings because
28:31they're a ton and we haven't even been in all of them yet there might be something there might be like
28:34a beam or something or i don't know something fall right over that we can try and reclaim and there
28:39is one more outbuilding to check the chateau's old bread oven yes oh my god okay this would work
28:49this is exactly what we're after guys
28:55they have it there's like bits that we can use
28:59and there's like loads of them there's enough for all of it and i found it in there and it's
29:03weathered we can like clean it up uh do you think it's gonna the pallet wood is gonna sustain the weight
29:09of it yeah it will because it's like it's on its side so it's got a lot of strength that way i mean
29:13pallets are designed to kind of hold up really heavy things okay what's happening i found a bit of oak
29:19is that really there's oak in the outhouses let's go pick it up now xavier found some very old
29:25wood available here on the side here look there's loads of it there's literally loads of it there's
29:32like all these gnarly flat on one side like how good would that look on the end of a bar i have a lot of
29:41reservations because this wood doesn't look in the right state they are really really old some of them
29:46might be rotten they are just all sort of shapes and we don't have the time because the countertop
29:53we have to build it quickly there's so many of them that it's hard to even pick one if it's no
30:00good i'm going home that's just how it is i'm prepared to take that risk i am just a bit pessimistic
30:06i think we can do this he guaranteed he can get something out of it taking full responsibility
30:12xavier if this doesn't work out this is on you i could cry i could literally cry i've been chasing this
30:17done but i'm in normandy for like two days yeah and it's sat right there under our noses oh mate
30:25i was living and dying by this piece of oak oh god sorry i was running around aimlessly trying to
30:33find pieces of oak that were right under my nose the whole time because it didn't just look right where
30:40we were i've been up i've been down i've been sideways i cried actually cried so that was great
30:49super embarrassing no it's not embarrassing it's too late now recently engaged they have plans to
30:55get married at the chateau but no they face an uphill battle to make it to the grand finale
31:01i haven't done anything on this scale before but we've done um you know bits and pieces bit of
31:06wallpapering oh geez right let's get on with the other bits hey yeah i can tell that sarah's quite
31:11scared of both my enthusiasm and the actual physical pieces of oak but i'm willing to stake
31:19this on it we're now halfway through this renovation challenge teams can we gather outside please oh what
31:28oh there they are looking worn out very tired it's time for your first petite challenge so if you'd like
31:39to follow me to the workshop where you'll find out what you'll be doing let's go oh oh gosh
31:46welcome to your first petite challenge each week i'll set a couple of petite challenges to test your
32:02ingenuity creativity and ability to work against the clock all of which are key traits in running a
32:09property of this scale in france successfully earlier today i was rummaging around in the cellar
32:18and i found these wonderful wine bottles which got me thinking every good entertainment space in a
32:24chateau needs a wine rack so today you have two hours to design and manufacture a wine rack that holds
32:3312 bottles of wine or more 12. you'll be competing in your individual pairs against your teammates to
32:41try and win this challenge right interesting once the time is up i'll be selecting a winning wine rack
32:48from each team which will take pride of place in your finished entertainment area happy yeah excited yes
32:57right i'll stop whining on and let you get started you've got two hours from now all right i've got
33:03an idea yeah i like the idea of being for quite a simple design pegs why pegs i mean it's just an
33:09idea not too complicated because i'm worried we could potentially run out of time maybe it's possible
33:14we can make a wine rack like this a wine tree no i don't like that for four bottles of wine
33:19for me try make like a castle tiny top like that three sorry yeah exactly like this but this one when
33:26you cross like this this will fit in here that is going to be much harder to make but this is pretty
33:33simple yeah that's what we've got two hours to make put some like nice color at the back
33:39what are you struggling with i do not know what you mean i'm gonna just draw it for you yeah shall we get
33:44going yeah yeah that's it let's have a look in the shed we've never ever done anything like this
33:49before no so um this is going to be really interesting this
34:01four determined pairs are competing in a renovation showdown for a chance to win a chateau
34:06in northwest france do we want it that thick or do you want it that thick i think it should be thick
34:11as part of their first challenge renovating the chateau's garages into entertainment spaces
34:18i've now given them just two hours to battle it out in their first ever petite challenge
34:22feels a bit weak going off against everyone else doesn't it it's a bit sad isn't it because we've
34:26all been working together as a team and now we're going to each other to design and create a wine rack
34:31using materials from the workshop so how are we gonna get this assembled together this we can cut and
34:37then moving can fit in together just practice trying to take it out how high is that then to
34:44measure it 42. that in profile which means i have to cut 45 degrees making pegs that are strong enough
34:52is going to take too long as we're obviously doing more of a gardening theme in our room so we thought
34:57we could do something that looks a bit like a tree so we've got basically like a central piece and then
35:01we're going to have little branches coming out xavier and tash are not the only ones thinking about
35:06incorporating the chateau's garden the plan is to make a tree-like wine rack so this would go
35:15upright and the wine bottles will sit in it this way our mint pair are making sure their design will
35:23hold 12 wine bottles so the idea is half a cut on first foot the other cut on the other wood they're
35:30going to interlock together and sit together this is the most i've ever seen you measure and do
35:35things you're talking about you've measured everything wrong in our house and i had to
35:38re-measure it remember that's not true 60. edward and nello they've cracked all of it yeah they're
35:47really doing well that's the halfway mark everybody you've got 60 minutes left one two three four how long
35:53is it taking you to do one hole i just need a thicker one this looks interesting how are we
36:03getting on quite well i think we're okay i think we've got a vision in mind what is the vision can
36:08have a look inside your brains please yes have a look at our dodgy skirt essentially a shelving unit
36:14with three shelves with a little lip on the front that basically sums it up i got that from the sketch
36:18what that sketch doesn't show is a bit more detail at the top and that might evolve as we
36:26carry on the process it may look like teeth at the top you had me until you said about it looking like
36:31teeth at the top that's slightly worrying did you get a vibe from max then i think he feels it was
36:37quite good until lunch and teeth what just happened did it snap has it snapped yeah what are we gonna
36:46do we are really covering ourselves in glory right now we need to need to consider that as well each
36:53side this looks interesting can you explain yourselves yes so this is old floor board we made this cut see
37:00in the middle so it will be solid like structurally sound weight of the waters will settle down yes
37:10yeah confident yes yes so we need to pack on it's gonna be finished yes okay good luck thank you
37:19i had a piece of pine that snapped into oh that's the way the grain goes isn't it yeah i didn't think
37:25about that one this is the joy of upcycling i know and shadows nothing is plain sailing
37:29okay talk to me about the general design so the design is that it's sort of based on a kind of a
37:34tree so our idea was to have kind of this central column and then to have some sort of chevron pieces
37:39running along it that will hold a bottle each so that you've got 12 bottles in like a long line that
37:44you could put on the wall or make a nice display out of so referring to nature that you'll see through
37:49those doors yeah so i'm going to leave you to it because you need to spend a lot more time on that to be
37:54the winners exactly okay good luck thank you we're making a wine tree this is the trunk and we're
38:04just gonna drill holes in there wide enough for the neck to fit in and these become the branches
38:10it's making me nervous saying this everybody but you've got 10 minutes to go right i think it's
38:25going to work very well now the plan is going to come into place about yeah we've got 72 we've got
38:39to be even space okay you got it it definitely fits we wanted to add the slot to hang the wine glasses
38:48so we found this this was a leftover bit we're just trying to figure out how we can make it work
38:58it's nearly one o'clock everybody you've got just five minutes left should that be back in there
39:05no that's all right two hours flies i know i told you that put it together just drill it in
39:10it's fine it's all right it's all right yeah hold these for me
39:18ready ready yeah face do we want a base i don't know if we want a base oh cut out a little crest
39:27yeah move your edge left let's go
39:34right that's what it's
39:37well we have the structure
39:38yes that's it right everybody time up tools down it's time to show me your designs
39:53elizabeth sam talk me through your design i think one of the key words is rustic affectionately
39:58calling this the turret teeth tower of wine wine this is where it falls apart and there's like a river of
40:06old wine i'll pass them to you yeah thank you let's stand back well i think that is a success
40:15you've done it thank you you've done it right next edwin and nell
40:21remind me of the design it's a wine tree the bottles go in here and we made it floor standing
40:26so no matter where you are in the chateau you're never far away from 12 bottles of wine
40:30yes have you tested to see if it actually works no no would you like to do what you have to okay
40:37here we go starting at the top interesting it's like jenga i'm just going to take a step back
40:45oh no that one's not gonna no it's not happening we got overconfident
40:54no no i'm not gonna do it lessons learned lessons learned okay right then to the next
41:00fingers crossed it holds more than one wine bottle
41:04damn fernando sorab how have you done the design here is simple and robust and functional but what's
41:12this additional part you just can hang glass in there and whenever you feel like just pour your
41:16wine and drink can we see just how robust it is by putting the 12 wine bottles in it please
41:27and as you can see you have a room for one more pleased very pleased very pleased with our tasha
41:34xavier you had a few early disasters but you seem to have created something how did it go we had a
41:40really lovely design and executing it was not as simple as we expected but visually does it
41:47represent your original design yes yeah so you're pleased with how it turned out we think so in the
41:51end shall we see if you're pleased once we throw those 12 bottles of wine at it yeah let's give it
41:57a go let's give it a go give it a go go for the other side because i can't watch that i am
42:00should put that up there it's not going anywhere i'm borderline picking it up and shaking it around
42:11that does deserve a round of applause and you do look pleasantly surprised fantastic
42:17well i guess it's time to go and make my decisions
42:27now firstly elizabeth and sam i'm not too sure about the the tooth story the castle but what
42:34you created is structurally sound you've used reclaimed materials and it successfully held 12
42:39bottles of wine so well done edward and nell i think i'm as disappointed as you are that big
42:45tree with all the leaves coming off of it unfortunately for you i can physically hold
42:50more bottles of wine in my two hands than the one bottle that that entire contraption of support
42:56so i'm pleased to announce the wine rack going into your entertainment space
43:04is elizabeth and sam
43:05thank you sorry now and afterwards fernando and sorab i think your use of reclaimed materials
43:13and those really lovely finishes help your design stand out tasha and xavier halfway through that
43:20challenge i thought i was going to see a load of kindling on the table so well done for pulling it back
43:25i'm actually really struggling to decide with your team the wine rack going into your entertainment space
43:31it's fernando and sorab
43:40i am thrilled that our creation is going to end up in that room are you getting really happy
43:45don't know i don't have words to describe and we are over the moon it has really boosted our
43:49confidence and we really think now we can win this week's challenge
43:53world well done buddy i would absolutely love to be here next week i'd love to get a step closer to
44:01the possibility of winning the chateau but i think the competition's really strong we are gutted to
44:07have lost the petite challenge the time pressure you've got here is unreal looking forward to a
44:12good night's sleep and cracking on in the morning yeah it's not very good under pressure just might
44:16have melted a little bit there we are obviously disappointed that we lost but i'm so proud of us
44:22because that was hard we never ever have to do that at home and like have something put together
44:29in two hours we now have to regroup and really focus tomorrow because it's a big day next time the
44:35pressure is on countertop is a massive risk i've put myself on the line two teams are going head to
44:40ahead i'd hate this evening as they continue to battle it out over grass and this stuff it'll
44:48just snap the casters off for a chance to win this stunning french chateau time's up tools down oh no
44:55who will impress it was an incredibly tough decision and which pair will be sent home the pair leaving us
45:00today is
45:14so
45:30You
