00:07Russell Crowe reveals that he made a promise to Paul Giamatti's dying mother that her son would be nominated for an Oscar for his work in Cinderella Man.
00:15Speaking with GQ for a retrospective video on his career published Monday, Crowe recalled that he told the studio to put its weight behind Giamatti, not himself, during award season.
00:25Crowe, who had already won an Oscar for 2000's Gladiator, explained that the same was done for him by Al Pacino for 1999's The Insider.
00:33We're going to put our emphasis on you, and we asked Mr. Pacino, and he said, back the kid.
00:40Crowe explains that Paul Giamatti's mother died during the course of shooting Cinderella Man, and he made her a promise on the phone that Paul was such an incredible actor that he would be nominated.
00:50And the studio asked me what I wanted to do, and I said, back the kid. And Paul Giamatti got an Academy Award nomination.
00:59In a different segment, Crowe also revealed that he believed he was going to be replaced with Sean Penn during rehearsals for LA Confidential.
