We spend our entire lives constructing narratives about ourselves. I am successful. I am wounded. I am creative. I am broken. I am strong. These stories become the masks we wear, the personalities we project, the identities we defend. But beneath all these carefully crafted layers lies a profound question that most of us never dare to ask: Who am I when I remove the mask?
The Architecture of Self-Deception
From the moment we're born, we begin assembling our personal mythology. We gather experiences like building blocks, cementing them together with interpretations, judgments, and meanings. A childhood event becomes "the reason I'm this way." A relationship becomes "proof of my worth." A failure becomes "evidence of my limitations."
These narratives are not inherently problematic. They help us navigate the world, make sense of chaos, and communicate our experience to others. The danger emerges when we forget that we are the authors of these stories, not their characters. We mistake the mask for the face, the role for the actor, the story for the storyteller.
Consider this: Every label you've ever attached to yourself—introvert, extrovert, damaged, healed, smart, foolish—exists only in the realm of thought. Strip away the mental commentary, and what remains? Not the absence of self, but something far more fundamental, far more real.
The Illusion of the Constructed Self
Our personalities are elaborate performances, refined over decades of practice. We learn which behaviors earn approval, which expressions invite connection, which aspects of ourselves should remain hidden. Layer by layer, we build an identity that feels so solid, so undeniable, that we never question its foundation.
Yet this constructed self is as ephemeral as morning mist. It shifts with circumstances, morphs with relationships, transforms with time. The "you" at twenty bears little resemblance to the "you" at fifty, and yet something constant persists through all these changes. That unchanging presence is not your personality—it's your consciousness itself.
Your divine, sacred self has no need for masks because it has no need to perform. It simply is. It doesn't require validation because it exists prior to all judgment. It doesn't fear exposure because it has nothing to hide. It is the pure awareness that witnesses every thought, every emotion, every sensation—including the thoughts about who you think you are.

00:00We spend our entire lives constructing narratives about ourselves.
00:05I'm successful, I'm wounded, I'm creative, I'm broken, I'm strong.
00:11These stories become the masks we wear.
00:15The personalities we project, the ideas and identities we defend.
00:23But beneath all of these are carefully crafted layers of lies.
00:28A profound question that most of us never dare to ask until we have to ask it.
00:37Who am I when I remove the mask?
00:40From the moment we're born we begin assembling our personal mythology.
00:46We gather experiences like building blocks, cementing them together with interpretations, judgments and meanings.
00:56A childhood event becomes the reason I am this way.
01:01A relationship becomes proof of my self-worth.
01:06A failure then becomes evidence of my limitations.
01:10These narratives are not inherently problematic.
01:15They help us navigate the world, make sense of chaos and communicate our experiences to others.
01:21The danger emerges when we forget that we are the authors of these stories, not their characters.
01:29And that's exactly what happens.
01:32We mistake the mask for the face, the personality for the person, the role for the actor and the story for the storyteller.
01:41Consider this, every label you've ever attached to yourself, introvert, extrovert, damaged, healed, smart, foolish, exists only in the realm of thought.
01:56Strip away the mental commentary and what remains?
01:59Not the absence of self, but something far more fundamental, far more real.
02:07Our personalities are elaborate performances, and this is what we've got to realize.
02:13They've been refined over decades of practice.
02:15We learn which behaviors earn approval, which expressions invite connection, and which aspects of ourselves should remain hidden.
02:27Layer by layer, mask by mask, we build an identity that feels so solid, so undeniable, that we never even question its foundation.
02:38Yet this constructed self is the ephemeral, yet this constructed self is as ephemeral as morning mist.
02:49It shifts with circumstances, morphs with our relationships, and transforms with time.
02:57The you identity at 20 bears little resemblance to the you you understand at 50.
03:08And yet something constant persists through all of these changes, that unchanging internal presence.
03:16That is not your personality, it's your consciousness itself.
03:23Your divine, sacred self has no need for masks.
03:27Because it has no need to perform, to act.
03:31It simply is.
03:33It doesn't require validation, because it exists prior to all judgment.
03:40It doesn't fear exposure, because it has nothing to hide.
03:43It is the pure awareness that witnesses every thought, every emotion, every sensation,
03:53including the thoughts about who you think you really are.
04:00So the masks of personality that were constructed to protect us, begin to deceive us at some point.
04:09And it's at that point that we need to move beyond the narrative prism of the personality.
04:20What I mean by that is we imprison ourselves in stories of limitation, boundaries that don't serve us.
04:30We believe, we believe, I can't do this because of what happened to me.
04:37I'll never be happy because I'm not that kind of person.
04:42This is simply who I am, and we try to accept that.
04:46These limiting statements feel like truth, but actually there are choices, which is good news.
04:55Choices to identify with a narrative or a story, rather than with the boundless awareness that creates all narratives.
05:05It's just too scary to bear at first.
05:10Limitation comes with certainty.
05:14A boundless existence comes with a lot of mystery, a lot of uncertainty.
05:20What would happen if you stopped defending your story?
05:25Not abandoned it, necessarily, but held it more lightly.
05:30Recognized it as one possible interpretation of yourself.
05:35Among infinite others.
05:38The personality you've constructed would still function.
05:42You could still navigate the practical world.
05:45But you would no longer be trapped inside it.
05:49Limited.
05:51This is what awakening means.
05:55Spiritual awakening.
05:56Recognizing that you are not the character and story,
06:00but rather the consciousness in which all stories appear.
06:05You are not the wave believing itself separate from the ocean.
06:10You are the ocean temporarily expressing itself as a wave.
06:15As a construct that can be seen.
06:17Your sacred self, that which you truly are, beneath all psychological constructions,
06:29cannot be described in words because it exists prior to language, prior to story.
06:36It cannot be measured or quantified easily, because it exists prior to all categories.
06:44It cannot be improved or damaged, because it exists beyond the realm of time and change.
06:51You see, that which is real, never changes.
06:56And that's how we know what's real.
06:58It simply never changes.
06:59So, this may sound abstract, even mystical, but it's actually the most direct, immediate truth available.
07:11Right now, in this moment, there is awareness present.
07:18That awareness is listening to these words, processing their meaning.
07:23Perhaps agreeing or disagreeing with the dualistic mind.
07:29But the awareness itself, the consciousness, the pure knowing that precedes all content and story,
07:40remains untouched by what it knows.
07:45So, here's the good news.
07:47You are that awareness.
07:51Not the thoughts you have about yourself,
07:53but the consciousness that knows those thoughts.
07:58Not your memories, but the presence that witnesses memory.
08:04Definitely not your personality,
08:06but the spaciousness in which personality appears.
08:17Discovering who you are without your story
08:19doesn't mean becoming a passive or disconnected being.
08:25On the contrary, really.
08:26It means engaging with life from a deep, profound place of freedom,
08:33where you're no longer defending a fixed identity,
08:38a limited identity.
08:44Rather, you become infinitely more adaptable,
08:47more creative,
08:49more alive.
08:53The masks of personality can still be worn.
08:57They are integrated and included,
09:00transcended and dissolved.
09:01But
09:01at some point,
09:05through this awakening process,
09:07you now know
09:08they're masks.
09:10You can play your roles in the theatre of life
09:13without forgetting that you're the actor,
09:15not the part.
09:17All the world is a stage.
09:23You know, Shakespeare said,
09:24and
09:24we play many roles,
09:28but playing roles
09:29really
09:30gets us nowhere.
09:32It's the truth
09:33that
09:34will indeed set us free.
09:37You can experience emotion
09:39without believing
09:40you are the emotions.
09:42You can
09:42think thoughts
09:44without believing
09:44you are your thoughts.
09:46But it's something
09:47that you need to do
09:48with the contemplative mind
09:50because it's something
09:51we forget.
09:53You see,
09:54when we identify
09:55with the mask
09:57or the persona,
09:58we really believe
09:59that's who we are.
10:01But that's not who we are.
10:03That's the constructed self.
10:08And all things constructed
10:09must come undone.
10:12This shift in perspective
10:14changes everything.
10:17Suffering that once seemed inevitable
10:18reveals itself
10:19as
10:20optional.
10:22So here comes the good news.
10:23you know,
10:24limitations that felt
10:25permanent
10:26dissolve like fog
10:28in sunlight.
10:30Depression,
10:32disorder,
10:33dis-ease,
10:35you know,
10:35a disordered personality,
10:37a disordered mask
10:38is something
10:39that can be removed
10:40even if you've worn it
10:42decade after decade.
10:46This is how we heal
10:47our anxiety,
10:48our suffering,
10:50the deeper pain.
10:51That desperate search
10:54for wholeness
10:55ends when you realize
10:56you were never broken
10:57to begin with.
10:59You were only identified
11:00with a story
11:01about being broken.
11:07So what we can do
11:08is start
11:09with the practice
11:12of remembering.
11:14We need to ask
11:15how we can access
11:17this authentic
11:18sacred self,
11:19this pure awareness,
11:20beneath the mask
11:21which is done
11:23not through
11:24more doing
11:25but through
11:26stopping.
11:28Stopping is the magic
11:29that we found
11:30many years ago
11:31that was the catalyst
11:33for healing
11:34deep,
11:35deep and profound
11:36suffering.
11:38So not through
11:39more doing
11:40but through stopping.
11:42It's like the binary system.
11:44Doing is a one,
11:46stopping is a zero.
11:47You need both,
11:48but when you're
11:50looking for
11:51an awakening,
11:52a paradigm shift,
11:54you need to stop.
11:56You need to get
11:56into the gap
11:57between thought,
12:00feeling and behavior,
12:02between stimulus
12:03and response.
12:05So we don't
12:06become enlightened
12:07or awakened
12:07through accumulating
12:08more knowledge
12:09but through realizing
12:11what you think
12:13you know
12:13may not be
12:14all there is.
12:15So we don't need
12:16more information,
12:19inform-mation,
12:21in other words,
12:22constructed information.
12:24At some point
12:25we need inspiration,
12:28in spirit,
12:29inspiration
12:30that cannot be seen.
12:32So we start
12:33a paradigm shift
12:34simply by
12:35noticing
12:36and of course
12:37noticing is a gift.
12:39Throughout your day
12:40you can pause
12:40and ask
12:41who
12:42is aware
12:43of now.
12:45Not what am I
12:46aware of,
12:46but who is
12:47the awareness
12:48itself.
12:50That's
12:51contemplative practice
12:52at its finest.
12:54So you don't
12:55find the answers
12:56in the thought.
12:57The question
12:58itself
12:59points beyond
13:00thought
13:00to the silent witness
13:03that
13:03perceives
13:04all thought.
13:06So remember,
13:07getting to zero
13:07stillness
13:08is to be still
13:10and know
13:11that I am God.
13:13It's in stopping
13:14that we really begin.
13:17If we work
13:18with contemplative
13:20practice
13:20of being still
13:22and aware,
13:23we get to notice
13:24how our sense
13:25of self
13:26contracts
13:27around
13:28the story.
13:30We can even
13:30feel the tension
13:31of defending
13:32an identity,
13:34of trying
13:35to prove
13:35our worth
13:36of
13:38trying to
13:39maintain
13:40a particular
13:40image.
13:41And if anyone
13:42questions it,
13:43we defend it.
13:44And
13:45defense is the
13:46first act
13:47of war.
13:48So if we see
13:49all of this
13:50happening and
13:50we don't engage,
13:51we can actually
13:52notice the
13:53spaciousness,
13:54the relief
13:55that comes
13:56when you let
13:56that contradiction
13:58soften,
13:59even for a
14:00moment or two
14:01at first.
14:02Your sacred
14:03self doesn't
14:04need to be
14:05created or
14:06earned.
14:07It's already
14:08present,
14:09patiently waiting
14:10beneath every
14:12mask you've
14:13ever worn,
14:14beneath the
14:16codependent,
14:17beneath the
14:18perfectionist,
14:19the controller,
14:21the victim
14:22and the actor.
14:24So who are
14:25you without
14:25your story then?
14:27You are the
14:28eternal,
14:29unchanging
14:30consciousness
14:30that gives
14:32rise to
14:32every story.
14:34Your true
14:35identity is
14:36the space
14:37in which
14:38all experience
14:38occurs.
14:40You are the
14:40light by which
14:42all things
14:42are known.
14:44And that
14:44light we call
14:45accessing your
14:46contemplative
14:48intelligence,
14:49your highest
14:50or meta
14:51intelligence
14:52that is beyond
14:53IQ,
14:54accessed through
14:55EQ,
14:56and it's
14:56available to
14:57everybody.
14:58This isn't a
14:59philosophical
15:00position to
15:01adopt or
15:01belief to
15:02defend.
15:03But this
15:04knowledge,
15:05this awakening
15:05is an
15:06invitation to
15:07direct
15:08recognition,
15:09to seeing
15:10through the
15:11illusions that
15:12separate and
15:13start rediscovering
15:16what you've
15:16always been.
15:18It's like a
15:18homecoming,
15:19really.
15:20The journey
15:21back home
15:21to sacred
15:23self.
15:23The masks
15:24of personality
15:25have served
15:26their purpose
15:27for all of
15:28us and
15:29they've
15:29served their
15:30purpose well
15:30but they've
15:31helped us
15:32navigate a
15:32complex world,
15:34they've helped
15:34us express
15:35unique perspectives
15:37and they've
15:39helped us to
15:39connect with
15:40others, to
15:40survive.
15:42But they
15:43were never
15:43meant to
15:43become
15:44prisons which
15:45they become
15:46at a time.
15:47And that
15:48is because
15:48the truth
15:49needs to
15:50set us
15:50free.
15:52You cannot
15:53stay fake,
15:54false,
15:55masked.
15:56You need to
15:57become who
15:58you really
15:58really are
15:59and that's
15:59the journey
15:59of life.
16:01It's very
16:02simple really.
16:03It's like
16:04the metamorphosis
16:06of a worm
16:07into a
16:07butterfly.
16:08We do
16:08exactly the
16:09same thing.
16:12Personalities
16:13become
16:13prisons and
16:15that is where
16:16depression,
16:17anxiety and
16:18everything else
16:19begin.
16:20But behind
16:21every mask
16:22and beneath
16:23every story
16:24your divine
16:25self remains
16:26pristine,
16:27untouched,
16:29healthy and
16:30whole.
16:31The question
16:31isn't whether
16:32you can find
16:33this sacred
16:34awareness or
16:34this sacred
16:35self.
16:36It's whether
16:37you're willing
16:37to stop long
16:38enough to
16:39notice that
16:39you've never
16:40been anything
16:41else to
16:42thine own
16:43self be
16:44true.
16:44to
16:46say some
16:50of
16:51that
16:51you have
16:54as
16:55as
16:56as
16:57as
16:58as
16:58as
16:59as
16:59as
17:00You
