00:00The doors to the den are open once more and the
00:05battleground for business is set.
00:08This is where fortunes are made.
00:10And futures are forged.
00:12But in this brand new series...
00:15The game has changed.
00:18Alongside four seasons...
00:21...stands a revolving door of fierce investors.
00:24Ambitious...
00:25...competitive...
00:26...and ready to take on...
00:28...the old guard.
00:31Joining them tonight...
00:32I'm Jenna Meek.
00:33I'm a serial entrepreneur.
00:35I'm currently the co-founder and CEO of her five beauty.
00:38She's shaken up the cosmetic...
00:40...world with one of the fastest growing UK brands.
00:43Welcome to the den.
00:44Yeah, it's gonna be good.
00:45We're the same age, aren't we?
00:46We are.
00:47Well, you look so much younger than me.
00:50Now, this next generation powerhouse is hungry for more.
00:54I quit my...
00:55I started my job in fashion...
00:56...and started my first business with £3,000 of my own savings.
00:59I scaled...
01:00...and started a multi-million pound business.
01:02My vision is to...
01:03...own this...
01:05...this world.
01:06I started my second business with a mission to simplify beauty.
01:10And we are on track to build a billion pound beauty empire.
01:13I'm a vision person.
01:15I'm a mission person.
01:16That's all I care about.
01:18I know exactly what I can bring to a business.
01:20So if there's a fight for an investment, I will be absolutely fighting for it.
01:24That's why I get...
01:25...so annoyed when someone says,
01:26Oh, you can source it from China.
01:27You can source anything from China.
01:29I am not...
01:30...you can't be scared of any of the dragons.
01:31If anything, they should be scared of me.
01:32They should be scared of me.
01:33Ha, ha, ha, ha!
01:35It's a battle for the next breakthrough.
01:38And the dragons are ready to...
01:40...strike.
01:45Hi, I'm Claire...
01:46...anderme on the Moon.
01:47I'm Claire the Moon.
01:48...and I'm Claire the Moon.

03:49Buying dead stock fabric
03:51Repurposing materials and patchworking at Ofc
03:54We aim for zero waste
03:56While offering a luxurious and ethical alternative to mass production
03:59Produced fashion
04:03Rooted in the vibrant
04:04From festival, performance and nightlife scenes
04:06Our hats have been worn by A-list actors

05:17It's an even taller than you
05:19Unusual Peter Jones
05:20To begin
05:24Chloe
05:26Hi
05:27Hello
05:28Sorry
05:29Can we be a bit more
05:29Serious for a moment please
05:30I'll try
05:31Um
05:32So
05:33When did you
05:34Start this business
05:35So
05:36Started in
05:372022
05:38Yep
05:39What was
05:39Your turnover
05:40In the first year
05:41So our turnover
05:42For that half year
05:43It was £7,000
05:44122
05:45Ok so £7,000
05:46Yeah £7,000
05:47£7,000
05:48£23,000
05:49£23,000
05:49£25,000
05:50£25,000
05:51£25,000
05:52And £24,000
05:53£30,600
05:54£26,000
05:55Are you making a profit?
05:57I have been
05:58Um
05:59So we've saved just
06:00For this year
06:01We're actually running
06:02At a loss of £500
06:03So when you made
06:04That £30,000 last year
06:05Did you make a profit on that?
06:06I did make a profit
06:07And it was
06:08Free
06:09£2,785
06:11Did you pay yourself?
06:12Yeah so I pay myself a month
06:14monthly salary of just around £800
06:16Just under
06:17And I've taken dividends
06:19£16,000
06:20From the company
06:21And you can live on that?
06:22I can
06:23Um
06:24I live
06:24Quite frugal
06:25And I liked thrift
06:26And upcycle
06:27And
06:28I
06:29At the moment
06:30I'm not really going out that much
06:31How old are you?
06:3232
06:33Ok
06:34Same age
06:34Same age
06:34Same age
06:35Centre so
06:36Okay yeah
06:39Hi, Chloe. Hi.
06:40So my background was in festivals.
06:42I actually started quite an...
06:44unsustainable festival brand, Glitter, First Jules,
06:46and decided to kind of stop.
06:49It all because it wasn't sustainable.
06:51And I thought at the time in the...
06:54there was a lot of fashion brands doing this,
06:56but not sustainably.
06:58So actually...
06:59this is a really clever route to create pieces like this
07:02that you're not wearing every day, but...
07:04to create really special memories with.
07:06Have you been to any festivals?
07:08Like, have you had stalls at festivals?
07:09Have you explored that yet?
07:11So I haven't been to festival selling, but...
07:14this summer I've got a commission for a festival in Albania called Unum.
07:19which is an electronic dance techno festival.
07:22And then at Glastonbury, I have...
07:24not got a pitch in the site,
07:26but it's a boutique campsite that's off-site.
07:29And it's a space where people are paying a lot of money to go bougie.
07:34And the price point of my hats is not...
07:37it is a bit higher.
07:39So on average, my hats sell for £250.
07:42And hopefully that's...
07:44that's the market that I want to be getting into.
07:46But, yeah, I'm at kind of the ceiling of what...
07:49I can do on my own.
07:52Chloe, erm...
07:53Tuka, hello.
07:54I think you are very talented.
07:57And...
07:59in a way, I've looked at this and say...
08:02you carry on the way you are.
08:05Do one-off pieces.
08:07And...
08:08have fun.
08:09And make a bit of...
08:09money.
08:10Yeah.
08:11Or...
08:12you could say...
08:13I could design products.
08:14and somehow...
08:15create areas where...
08:17I could create a business.
08:20But what worries me more than anything is...
08:23how big can this...
08:24sketch?
08:25So it...
08:26so...
08:27you...
08:28you're a one...
08:29one-woman band.
08:30And...
08:31you know...
08:32in order...
08:33to create...
08:34this...
08:34vision.
08:35You need more people.
08:36You need a lot more than 50,000.
08:37Yeah.
08:38Right?
08:39You need...
08:40premises.
08:41Ideally...
08:42a little...
08:43shop with a...
08:44workshop in the back.
08:45Yeah.
08:46Yeah.
08:47Gonna...
08:48gonna be a tough one.
08:49Chloe...
08:50I...
08:51I...
08:52I...
08:53I...
08:54I...
08:54I...
08:55You're...
08:56You know...
08:57You're talented.
08:58And I think these are...
08:59when I first saw them,
09:00I thought, what?
09:01But actually, they're really cool.
09:03You know, they are really...
09:04cool.
09:05I love that they exaggerate...
09:06every nod...
09:07and every shake as well.
09:09Um...
09:10But I don't see...
09:12that it's an investment.
09:14because I can't see the mechanics...
09:17that turn it into a sort of...
09:19a day-to-day business...
09:21that can just keep...
09:22throwing off.
09:23Yeah.
09:24profit, which you need.
09:25Yeah.
09:26You know, there...
09:27and that's the bit that I can't find.
09:29And for that reason...
09:30I'm out.
09:34Chloe.
09:35Yes.
09:36When I look at this business, I do think...
09:39that you probably don't want an investor.
09:42I do.
09:44I'm not sure you do.
09:46I think you might need a partner in the business...
09:48someone to bounce...
09:49things off.
09:50Yeah.
09:51But investor is a slightly different animal...
09:52especially a dragon...
09:53because...
09:54we put our money in...
09:55with the prospect of getting a return on that money.
09:57Wow.
09:58And...
09:59the struggle that I have is...
10:01I don't...
10:02I can't see that here.
10:04So, I'm gonna say that I'm out.
10:05No worries.
10:10Yeah.
10:11So...
10:12really resonate with what everyone's saying.
10:13And...
10:14I've been...
10:14exactly where you've been...
10:15in a very similar route...
10:17into this festival world.
10:18And...
10:19I really resonate...
10:20because I also thought...
10:2110 years ago...
10:22I want an investor...
10:23because...
10:24that will solve all my problems...
10:26and...
10:27it actually would create problems...
10:28because...
10:29what you're...
10:29doing this...
10:30sustainable route...
10:31this...
10:32like...
10:33your personality...
10:34there's something really...
10:34especially here...
10:35and...
10:36someone else will just pull you...
10:37in the wrong directions...
10:38that you need to lead the vision...
10:39and...
10:40be...
10:39focused on it...
10:40and you will...
10:41you will blow up...
10:42because you already are blowing up...
10:43so well done...
10:44but...
10:44this isn't an investment for me...
10:45so I am out.
10:47Thank you so much.
10:52Oh, Chloe.
10:53Yeah?
10:54The really interesting...
10:54thing is...
10:55that...
10:59I really like it.
11:01I really like it.
11:04and I genuinely think...
11:06you do need an investor...
11:07it's the very thing...
11:08that you...
11:09you need...
11:10I really do.
11:11You really, really do...
11:12because...
11:13you don't have the...
11:14experience of knowing...
11:15how to build a business...
11:16but yet...
11:18you've got the...
11:19creative genius within you...
11:21and sometimes...
11:22that's what makes...
11:23creative...
11:24geniuses get noticed is that they're backed and supported by people that
11:29know how to run businesses
11:34but I think this is a very big risk
11:37so I'd like
11:39to partner with tucco bunny
11:43and the reason for that
11:44is that there is no better person that understands the fashion
11:49world and the fashion market
11:51so
11:53I would like
11:54to make you an offer
11:55oh my god
11:58okay thank you
11:59bye
12:04my offer would be to share with tucco if he would be willing
12:09he put me on the spot hasn't he
12:10come on tucco bunny
12:13so you
12:14you've asked for 50,000 pounds for 15%
12:18and I'd like to offer you
12:1925,000
12:2125,000
12:2325,000
12:24for 15% of your business
12:29okay
12:31okay
12:34you are
12:35very talented
12:36okay
12:37that
12:38I can say
12:39I know
12:40I know I can help
12:42I know I can help
12:44So I am going to make you an offer.
12:49I'm going to give you half the money, that's $25,000.
12:54And I'll match Peter's offer at 15%.
12:59Yeah.
13:00Do you need to think about it?
13:01No.
13:02OK.
13:05I really want to do it, yeah.
13:06I want it to be...
13:07I want it to be...
13:09Big brand.
13:10Right.
13:11Let's do it.
13:12Yeah.
13:13Come here.
13:14Bring it in, bring it in.
13:15One of us.
13:16Come on, tucca bunny.
13:17It's a feather in...
13:19Chloe's cat.
13:21Well done.
13:22She leaves the den with £50,000...
13:29Having given away double the 15% equity originally on offer...
13:34in exchange for double the dragons.
13:37Working with Peter and Tucca...
13:39It's going to be amazing.
13:40Oh my God.
13:41I'm...
13:44I'm buzzing.
13:45I think you guys have gone absolutely mad.
13:47No, but she is special.
13:49Yeah, she is.
13:50If I can give this young lady an opportunity to improve her life...
13:54That's what I'll do.
13:55That whole speech would have been great without the bunny ears on.
13:58It was...
14:00Seriously?
14:01Hahaha.
14:02Hahaha.
14:03Hahaha.
14:04Hahaha.
14:05Hahaha.
14:06Hahaha.
14:09Yeah.
14:10Yeah.
14:11Yeah.
14:12Yeah.
14:14Okay.
14:15Okay.
14:16My name is Murat Husainov.
14:17I was born in Azerbaijan.
14:19but I've spent most of my life in London.
14:21Okay.
14:24Let's do this.
14:25Let's do this.
14:26My family have got amazing work ethic.
14:28It's been amazing.
14:29Watching them come into a country where they didn't even speak a language.
14:31Hello Dragmas.
14:32And work really hard.
14:34To raise me and my sister.
14:36And yeah.
14:37That's definitely been a big inspiration.
14:39When I started the business I didn't have any savings in the bank account.
14:44So it's been a real journey of pushing the boulder up a hill.
14:46And now it really suddenly feels like we're chasing it.
14:49Yeah.
14:50Yeah.
14:51Yeah.
14:52Yeah.
14:53Yeah.
14:54Yeah.
14:55Yeah.
14:56Yeah.
14:57Yeah.
14:58Yeah.
14:59Yeah.
14:59Hello Dragons.
15:00I'm Murat.
15:01And today I'm seeking £70,000 in exchange for a full
15:044% equity stake in my business, Mosaic Journal, a photo printing app.
15:09With a little bit of a twist.
15:11Collectively, we take over 2 trillion photos.
15:14A year.
15:15Now, the reason that we take those photos hasn't changed in decades.
15:19But the way that we store and share and experience those photos, those memories, has changed
15:24dramatically.
15:25When I visit my parents, they get out these amazing photo albums that show them
15:29their life journey from Azerbaijan, where I was born, to here, England.
15:33What about my life?
15:34My life journey.
15:35My felt trapped.
15:36Lost in my phone.
15:37So I created Mosaic.
15:39The Mosaic Journal.
15:40When you sign up, we send you an empty Mosaic Journal.
15:44And then, using our app, you upload one photo a day.
15:48Uploading...
15:49Very simple.
15:50Tap a date.
15:51Pick a photo.
15:52And that's it.
15:54Once a month, for less than a tenner, those photos are printed and sent to your home for
15:58you to keep.
15:59Keep forever.
16:00You can even add the date and the location directly onto the photographs.
16:04So you always remember where and when it was taken.
16:07Filling your Mosaic Journal is easy.
16:09The photos slot straight in.
16:11And inside each one of these, there's 365 slides.
16:14For a full year of your life.
16:16We've kept things lean.
16:17It's just me and my developers.
16:19Yet, through posting consistently on TikTok, we've managed to grow to a thousand paid subscribers.
16:24In the last few months.
16:25I've brought a Mosaic Journal for each of you, with photos from my own journey.
16:29And as you look through them, I ask you this.
16:32How would you feel if instead, it was...
16:34It's full of photos from your journey that got you into those chairs that you're sitting
16:38in right now.
16:39I would've preferred it.
16:40I would've preferred it.
16:41Yeah.
16:44A physical photo journal featuring daily snaps from a customer's...
16:49smartphone picture library is the proposition from Murad Hussainov.
16:54Peter, if you could just take this one, please.
16:56Is it that one there?
16:57Yes.
16:59Cool.
17:00There you go.
17:01I mean, they're quite heavy.
17:02Murad is seeking £70,000.
17:04In return for 4% of his business.
17:07This is one year?
17:08Yes, one year photo.
17:09So can this entrepreneur make more memories to treasure?
17:14In the den?
17:15Or will this particular outing turn into an occasion to...
17:19forget.
17:24Hi.
17:25Great pitch.
17:26So tell me, what else is out there...
17:29on the market like this at the moment?
17:32We see our competitors in three categories...
17:34essentially.
17:35We see photo printing.
17:36Yeah.
17:37Photo journaling and...
17:39social media as well, because we're actually a social photo printing app.
17:43But in...
17:44in terms of this exact concept, like a photo diary with a subscription photo service that's...
17:49sends you photographs automatically every month.
17:51There's nothing like that on the market right now.
17:53And...
17:54just on that, so...
17:55a social app.
17:56Can my friends see this?
17:58Yes.
17:59So, part of how this started was...
18:01I was spending a lot of time on social media.
18:03And I was thinking...
18:04this is not a real reflection of my life.
18:06I feel that...
18:07social media is broken.
18:09because they're incentivized to get us to spend as much of our time as possible...
18:12on our phones.
18:13So what I wanted to do was...
18:14create a solution...
18:15where you could still...
18:16capture and document your life...
18:17with your friends...
18:18but...
18:19it felt a little bit more positive...
18:20and uplifting.
18:21I love that.
18:22So, in terms of the social features...
18:24you can add your friends.
18:25They only see the photos they're tagged in.
18:27And...
18:28we're also introducing...
18:29something called Share In Real Life...
18:30where...
18:31let's just say...
18:32we were friends on the app.
18:34I could just...
18:35with the click of one button...
18:36complete frictionless sharing...
18:37send you like a framed photograph...
18:39that we have together.
18:40And because the app stalls...
18:41the data for the address...
18:42I wouldn't even have to...
18:43type in...
18:44or know it.
18:45I could just send you a gift.
18:46Amazing.
18:47Thank you so much.
18:49for your questions.
18:52We're out.
18:53Hey Peter.
18:54Really beautifully packaged by the way.
18:56Thanks.
18:57Really smart.
18:58I like it a lot.
18:59So what do you pay to be part of this?
19:02So the photo album is 20...
19:04£29.99.
19:05Yeah.
19:06You can buy that once...
19:07and then the photographs are £9.99 a month...
19:09including...
19:09free shipping...
19:10for about 31 photographs.
19:12OK.
19:13And then when do you...
19:14start this?
19:15It was incorporated...
19:16in the end of 2021.
19:19I can take you through...
19:20Do you mind just to see the growth...
19:22over 22 to...
19:23to now?
19:24In 2022...
19:25we did...
19:26£400 turnover...
19:27and a net loss...
19:29of £30,000.
19:30In...
19:312023...
19:32we did...
19:33a turnover of...
19:34£11,000...
19:35and a net loss...
19:36of £84,000.
19:37In...
19:382024...
19:39we did a turnover of...
19:41£36,000.
19:44and a net loss...
19:45of...
19:49£45,000.
19:51And what do you...
19:53er...
19:54project...
19:55the next...
19:5612 months?
19:57We project...
19:58the time...
19:59of around...
19:59£270,000.
20:00Right.
20:01And you're valuing...
20:02the company at...
20:03two point...
20:04how much?
20:04£1.75.
20:05We're not using...
20:06a revenue multiple...
20:07to get the valuation...
20:08No, you use the crystal ball.
20:10Look, we raised...
20:11six months ago...
20:12to £2.5 million valuation...
20:13before...
20:14we had...
20:14£80,000...
20:15of revenue...
20:16in the last...
20:17four months.
20:18And you own...
20:19how much...
20:20do you own...
20:21of the business?
20:22Yeah, so I own...
20:2363.5%...
20:24of the business.
20:24If I gave you...
20:25a million pounds...
20:26for this business...
20:27would you sell it?
20:28What?
20:29Of course...
20:29I'm just...
20:30I'm just...
20:31No, I wouldn't.
20:32You wouldn't sell it?
20:33No.
20:34I think...
20:35No.
20:35I think this business...
20:36can get really big.
20:37Photobox...
20:38exited...
20:39on...
20:39estimates...
20:40of half a billion dollars too.
20:44Let's get back to reality.
20:46Okay.
20:48It's a photo album.
20:49which will probably...
20:50Yes.
20:51And you know...
20:52it's a photo album...
20:53which will probably...
20:54appeal...
20:55to a certain percentage...
20:57of the population.
20:59to everybody.
21:00Because...
21:01It's not a photo album.
21:02Sorry?
21:03It's not a photo album.
21:04It's a photo diary.
21:05It's a photo journey.
21:06It's not a photo album.
21:07What is it?
21:08That's like saying...
21:09food, eats, or delivery...
21:10is food.
21:11They're not food, are they?
21:12It's the user experience...
21:13They're saving...
21:14It's saving you time...
21:15and effort effectively...
21:16achieving a goal.
21:17It's doing it for me.
21:18I could buy that photo album.
21:19tomorrow.
21:20But Tuca...
21:21would you then go...
21:22and print out ten photos...
21:23write on them...
21:24put the date on them...
21:25put the location on them...
21:26or would you rather pay me...
21:27ten quid...
21:28and I'll do it for you.
21:29But I don't want it.
21:30That's you.
21:31You're not the target customer.
21:32I'm just saying.
21:33I'm not your target...
21:34if you let me finish...
21:35what I said...
21:36is that at the end of the day...
21:39you have got...
21:40a limited amount of people...
21:42that would want this.
21:43You've got...
21:44Steven's one of them.
21:45There's one gratitude journal...
21:47which recently sold over two million...
21:49copies...
21:50and they don't have a subscription business...
21:51like we do.
21:52Looking at this as a journal...
21:53instead of album...
21:54is...
21:55is how we're looking at it.
21:57But you've been going four years...
21:59and...
22:00you've turned over 80 grand...
22:02my business...
22:03some of them do...
22:04every day in one day.
22:05Mm-hmm.
22:06Not when you first started though.
22:07We'll get there.
22:08For sure we'll get there.
22:09No, no, no.
22:10But...
22:11at what cost?
22:12So...
22:13when I invest £70,000...
22:14Yes.
22:14When do you believe...
22:15that I will have my money back?
22:17We're targeting an exit...
22:18of three to five years...
22:19however...
22:20if you would want to sell...
22:21there will hopefully be...
22:22liquidation events...
22:23on that...
22:24a journey...
22:25where somebody might want to...
22:26buy your shares...
22:27however...
22:28I would love for you...
22:29to be part of the journey...
22:29and...
22:30double down...
22:31if the company's doing well.
22:32Not your valuation...
22:33I could change the valuation.
22:34if you want to put it up.
22:37No, I don't...
22:38I don't think I want to put it up.
22:39I don't think I want to put it up.
22:42So...
22:43you're very...
22:44profitable.
22:45But I think this is going to take...
22:46longer than you think.
22:49with that reason I'm out.
22:50Okay.
22:54It's interesting.
22:56Look, I...
22:57I...
22:58I own Jessops.
22:59Right?
23:00So...
23:01and I own Jessops' photo as well.
23:03Mm-hmm.
23:04We've got hundreds of thousands of customers.
23:06Mm-hmm.
23:07We've got hundreds of thousands of customers.
23:09So...
23:12This is not a challenge.
23:14for us to be able to do something like this.
23:16I think it's a really neat idea.
23:17Mm-hmm.
23:18Amazing.
23:19And...
23:20you know,
23:21I...
23:22I could really help you here.
23:25Similarly,
23:26I could also do it myself quite easily.
23:28I could also do it myself quite easily.
23:30And in a way,
23:31I wish you didn't have your shareholders.
23:35Why?
23:36Because I would probably offer you an amount of money.
23:39for the business.
23:40Mm-hmm.
23:41And bring it in-house.
23:42And offer you a job as...
23:44managing director of...
23:46a whole photo group worldwide.
23:47Mm-hmm.
23:48Because I think you're...
23:49exceptional as an individual.
23:51Thank you, Peter.
23:52I'm gonna say, though,
23:53sadly, that I'm out.
23:55But that's...
23:56of no means a reflection of you.
23:58I think you've done...
23:59done really well.
24:01Thank you very much.
24:05All right.
24:06Hi.
24:07Um...
24:08I think this is where my...
24:09I love the idea of storytelling.
24:10I love the idea of...
24:11when I go on holiday...
24:12I love the idea of...
24:13when I go on holiday...
24:14being able to...
24:15select the right amount of pictures...
24:16and put them in a book.
24:18But...
24:19I feel like...
24:20for me...
24:21who's quite busy...
24:22but also wants to do this...
24:23I feel quite overwhelmed.
24:24that it's a year...
24:25and how much I have to do...
24:26to complete this.
24:27I do love where...
24:29where you're kind of...
24:30going with it.
24:31I just don't think it's...
24:32perfect.
24:34So I am out...
24:35but I do wish you...
24:36the best of luck.
24:39I love the idea...
24:42what'strapped the boy's name...
24:42The boy has spoken to him...
24:43who is who does...
24:45what'strapped the boy's name?
24:46Well, there...
24:47I know...
24:47who's a new figure...
24:48who's missing...
24:51who's missing a neworian character.
24:52I hope...
24:53pH was missing just...
24:55and who's missing...
24:58who's missing a new book...
24:59how is this?
25:00I know...
25:01illustrate how Lubr,
25:02if we don't see what else...
25:05which is wrong...
25:08what?
25:08It says, there's something in here holding me.
25:13And I think there is something about this.
25:18You have got something.
25:21And I know environmental credentials.
25:23They're very important to you.
25:25And we've really doubled down on that as well.
25:28I don't.
25:28If I were you, I'd be really quiet now because my next phrase was...
25:33When I take a breath like that, it usually means...
25:38Soap.
25:43I'm going to make you an offer.
25:48And I'm kind of surprising myself a bit, to be perfectly honest.
25:52But there is something about you.
25:53And there is something about this.
25:56However, your valuation, I've got to tell you...
25:58You ask for £70,000 for 4%.
26:03So I am going to offer you all of the money.
26:07But I want 12%.
26:11Thank you for your offer.
26:13I really like the business.
26:18I really like it, in part because it's something that I wish I had.
26:23Because I've got 200,000 photos in my phone.
26:27And if I could, in a couple of clicks, print...
26:28It's out my favourite ones, especially for like Valentine's Day with my missus,
26:31when I do my little scrapbook thing.
26:32And these are the bigger...
26:33notifications for my friends and family and stuff.
26:35Especially if I can send it to them.
26:36I would 100% be doing that.
26:38So, I am going to make you an offer.
26:43I just can't figure out how...
26:47Like 4% to me is just...
26:48It's never going to happen.
26:50It's never going to happen.
26:52However...
26:53I would make you an offer for all of the money for 15%.
27:02Thank you very much for...
27:03your offers and your kind words as well.
27:05They really meant a lot.
27:13What I want to do with this business is I want to build this.
27:18Photo printing business and in parallel I want to also build out.
27:23One of the biggest kind of authentic media channels and voices on the internet.
27:28So I think it would make sense to partner with you.
27:33However, the percentages aren't going to work.
27:38That they're too far apart.
27:43What would you consider instead?
27:48Taking 9% of the business.
27:53Daily
28:08Two
28:11Two
28:16Three
28:18Three
28:20a non-negotiable um okay it's got to feel good

32:53Oh, that's...
32:53That's interesting.
32:54These are prototypes.
32:55In return...
32:56for a two and a half percent...
32:58share in their company.
32:59Right, let me just...

33:17of TEF...
33:18TEF.
33:19What is it?
33:20TEF is...
33:21TEF is...
33:22TEF is...
33:23Ethiopian...
33:24grain...
33:25that has been here for...
33:27almost...
33:28thousands of years.
33:29TEF is...
33:30So, is it a wheat?
33:31Is it a grass?
33:32It's a grass.
33:33The grass.
33:33It's a grass.
33:34It's a grass.
33:35Okay.
33:36Lovely.
33:37So, you've raised...
33:38£2 million already.
33:39Now, that's quite a stunner...
33:41for your pre-revenue.
33:42You have...
33:43haven't sold any yet.
33:44Even this is a prototype.
33:46Yes.
33:47So, how did you...
33:48raise £2 million?
33:49And from where?
33:50So, we went to Angel Investors...
33:52and we've had...
33:53significant traction.
33:54But there was one who was...
33:56who really aligned with our...
33:58values and our purpose.
34:00Erm...
34:01and this is why we said...
34:02we would look like...
34:03a strategic partnership...
34:04because...
34:05erm...
34:06we would want someone to understand...
34:07that it's not...
34:08just about the product...
34:09but it's about...
34:10erm...
34:11supporting agriculture...
34:12solid irrigation...
34:13ethical farming...
34:15you know...
34:16supporting communities...
34:17And how much...
34:18how much did they put in...
34:19that one person?
34:20Erm...
34:21It's a company...
34:22It's a company...
34:23they put in...
34:242 million.
34:25We're in the...
34:26we're in the final...
34:27the final...
34:28we're at 90% now...
34:29with erm...
34:30raising the funding...
34:31capital.
34:32So they pledged it.
34:33they haven't actually...
34:34handed the money over yet.
34:35No.
34:36No.
34:37No.
34:38No.
34:39No.
34:40Carmen and Yusuf.
34:41Yes.
34:42Hi.
34:43Pleased to meet you.
34:43Good to meet you.
34:44I just want to...
34:45quickly cover off...
34:46the people that...
34:47are saying...
34:48they're gonna...
34:48give you 2 million.
34:49Yeah.
34:50What equity...
34:51are you negotiating...
34:52with them?
34:537.9%...
34:55for 2 million.
34:56Yes.
34:57So how have you managed...
34:58to get...
34:59a 25 million...
35:00valuation...
35:01with a brand...
35:02and a box?
35:03Based on...
35:04the plant-based...
35:05plant-based drink market...
35:06right now...
35:07erm...
35:08the growth is 7.5%...
35:10erm...
35:11in the UK alone...
35:12and 13.5%
35:13worldwide...
35:14I don't know...
35:15but why have they...
35:16done that with you?
35:17Why...
35:18I mean...
35:18the grace of God.
35:19Don't...
35:20don't take this...
35:21the wrong way...
35:22No, we understand.
35:23It's...
35:23made me...
35:24highly skeptical...
35:25straight away...
35:26that you've been able to...
35:27unless there's something...
35:28I'm...
35:28I'm missing...
35:29and that's what...
35:30I want to extract...
35:31if it's possible.
35:32No...
35:33No, it's fine.
35:33What is it that...
35:34has enabled you...
35:35to get a...
35:362 million pound...
35:37potential investment...
35:38at a value...
35:38of 25 million pounds...
35:39for a business...
35:40that yet...
35:41doesn't exist?
35:42The founders...
35:43explained...
35:44that we don't...
35:45we don't necessarily...
35:46just invest...
35:47in a product...
35:48but we...
35:48invest in the people...
35:49and...
35:50who we are...
35:51you know...
35:52we work together...
35:53we're...
35:54strong together...
35:55and...
35:56we are driven together.
35:58So tell me about...
35:59what have you done...
36:00before this?
36:01So...
36:02er...
36:03I have...
36:03a...
36:05a...
36:06maintenance...
36:07and...
36:08...
36:08just this company, small company, but in our restaurant, we do serve engineers.
36:13In Jara, you get it from TAFE, so that's what we were doing.
36:18I'm a nurse by background. I completed my nursing, I did my master's.
36:23And then I went into opening a home care company, which cares for individuals.
36:28With end of life, cancer, learning disabilities, mental.
36:34And the two of you come together, how did that happen?
36:37I sadly...
36:38I would have lost my mum in 2023.
36:41I'm sorry for that.
36:42And I'd gone to the funeral home...
36:43And I came out with my brother and I just said, I can't go home right now.
36:47I'm not in...
36:49So he said, let's just go for a coffee.
36:51And we went into the coffee shop, which was $2.
36:53And I couldn't find anywhere to have the work for my mother.
36:58And Yosef had overheard me saying this.
37:01And he said, listen, just have my coffee shop.
37:03And then he served as in Jara.
37:05So we got talking about in Jara, how good...
37:08And the wood it was and the iron.
37:09And I just said, oh, you know, like as a passing comment.
37:11I thought we could make this into probiotics.
37:13And then we sat down and we put our heads together and we said,
37:16let's try a plant-based.
37:18Milk alternative.
37:19OK.
37:20You seem to have come alive, Carmen, now.
37:22Because I'm...
37:23I was nervous.
37:24I'm so nervous.
37:25Yeah, yeah.
37:26I forget your people.
37:27I don't know why you're nervous.
37:28To raise too...
37:28If you're a million, you must have some sort of superpower,
37:30because I think that's amazing at that valuation.
37:32Can I ask my last question?
37:33What happens if that investment doesn't happen?
37:35What will you do?
37:36We've brought it as far as this.
37:38You know, and I know my mum had also left me some money,
37:41so I would be willing to...
37:43invest everything that I have into this,
37:45because everybody's loved it.
37:47Everybody loved the taste.
37:48It won't stop.
37:49It won't stop you, is my point.
37:50It won't stop.
37:51It won't stop, definitely.
37:53What a beautiful story.
37:55And very serendipitous.
37:58What I'm about to say, you're not gonna like.
38:01Okay.
38:03In my years of investing, I've never in my life heard
38:06of anyone raising two million...
38:08for seven percent of their business pre-launch,
38:11unless...
38:13the founder has had tremendous outside success in an area...
38:18related to it, or in another area before.
38:23When I'm saying that, I'd be extremely cautious,
38:25and don't factor in anyone's words
38:27until the money is in your...
38:28bank account.
38:29Amen.
38:30Not even when the contract's signed,
38:31when the money's in your account.
38:32Amen.
38:33I agree.
38:33I don't think that's gonna happen.
38:36I've just never seen that ever in my entire life.
38:38ever.
38:39So, I'm saying that out of love.
38:41I'm saying that out of love.
38:42Thank you so much for your...
38:43for your advice.
38:44And, you know, whether it happens or not,
38:46we've been able to have the...
38:48race to be able to make such a product...
38:50that is...
38:51so fantastic to us.
38:54I sense a real hunger, determination,
38:57anger...
38:58angst and pain underneath the surface with you.
39:00There's something in you that's given you that...
39:04that steely dog.
39:06Yes.
39:07And I'm not gonna let go of...
39:08I love that.
39:09And what is that?
39:11I think it's...
39:13going through...
39:14erm...
39:15toughness.
39:16Hard life.
39:18struggles.
39:19Trials.
39:20Trials.
39:22Trials.
39:23Institutions.
39:24But I believe in what...
39:27...
39:28what we have it's not things don't happen by accident
39:33I don't believe in coincidence and
39:38That's the thing that drives me no matter what I put my hand to I'll make sure it's turned around
39:43I certainly don't think you're gonna give up I'll give you that
39:48So I'd bet on you as an individual because of that determination I see it in your eyes
39:53But I can't bet on this business without more information
39:56I think this is just too early for me
39:58I just don't have enough evidence so I wish you the best
40:02Thank you
40:03But I'm gonna say that I'm out
40:05Thank you
40:07Thank you
40:08Thank you
40:10Youssef and Carmen
40:11Um
40:12There's
40:13There's no real background here
40:15And I also struggle with the fact that you've come in at that
40:18Four million pound valuation
40:21It's just
40:22It
40:23It
40:23I'd be
40:23I'd be candid
40:24It
40:24It
40:24It just doesn't work out
40:25It's
40:26It's just not right
40:28So I'm gonna say
40:28That I'm out
40:31But I really appreciate you coming in at least giving it a
40:33Go
40:34That's fine
40:35Thank you
40:38Hi
40:38Um
40:39I think this is where I'm at with it
40:41I do just resonate with what Steve
40:43And Peter is saying it is just quite an early investment
40:47But
40:48You're
40:48Clearly incredible entrepreneurs
40:50And you've clearly got this incredible fight in both of you
40:53And I think your story is amazing
40:56But for me today it's not an investment
40:58So I am out
41:00I wish you
41:01Thank you
41:01Best of luck
41:02Thank you so much
41:03I don't know
41:07Kamal and Yusuf
41:08This is a personal mission.
41:13For the two of you.
41:18And I respect-
41:18But you've not convinced me that-
41:23This is a business where I may even get my money back.
41:28And for that reason, I'm out.
41:38So go on, guys.
41:40I am plant-based.
41:43So-
41:43Why would I choose this over my preferred, which is oat milk?
41:46Why should I switch?
41:50Now's your moment.
41:51Because it's gluten-free?
41:54I'm not gluten intolerant.
41:55Oh, I'm bothered.
41:56I'm worried about it's plant-based.
41:58So simply, if you compare it like-
42:01For like, you've got better protein.
42:04And as well, there is no taste that-
42:06It's going to live on a mouse after you test it.
42:09So, death naturally is-
42:11And it doesn't have any taste.
42:14So-
42:14It does.
42:15And-
42:16I have-
42:16It's actually got quite a strong taste.
42:18Okay.
42:19That's the bit you can't tell me, because I've tasted it.
42:21It definitely has taste.
42:22It has taste.
42:23It has taste.
42:24It has taste.
42:24Quite a lot.
42:25The-
42:25The-
42:26The other thing, oats, I just oats, we are a-
42:31We are a story.
42:32We are a culture.
42:33We are a heritage.
42:35We are supporting-
42:36ethical and sustainability.
42:39It's a movement, not just a plan.
42:41Now, listen, I understand all of that but I promise you there's a load of...
42:46both brands out there who say exactly the same thing.
42:50So here's the issue.
42:51For me, I don't know.
42:53I suspect you're onto something.
42:56So I think you might have some new market.
42:59However, I think you're going to struggle.
43:01To change people who are really settled into their plant-based drink.
43:05I prefer it.
43:06Now that's not...
43:07That doesn't mean to say that's any better or worse.
43:09That's just that I prefer it.
43:12So I'm afraid I won't be investing.
43:14I'm out.
43:15Spike?
43:16Thank you, Douglas.
43:17Thank you so much.
43:18Thanks for coming.
43:19And good luck.
43:19You're the best.
43:20Cheers. Thank you.
43:21Nice to meet you.
43:23Unfortunately for Carmen and Josef,
43:26they must leave empty-handed.
43:31But...
43:31Despite their failure to clinch a deal...
43:34It's okay.
43:36The...
43:36The duo remain resolute.
43:38That's fine.
43:39We'll make it anyway.
43:40We will make it anyway.
43:42I'm a little bit disappointed.
43:43But the positives are...
43:45They complement...
43:46A lot on who we are as people.
43:49At the end of the day...
43:51Nothing's gonna stop us.
43:56Like I'm listening to several minutes.
43:57I'm trying to catch a face then.
43:59Here you go.
44:01And what?
44:03I'm pretty sure she is office service service.
44:06It cute.
44:07So do think we're going to live in an able project like this,
44:08so you're going to get to participate,
44:09and get back to life.
44:09And eventually,
44:10get back to life's bed.
44:13I'm looking to just click on,
44:14whatever you want.
44:14You're not going to be like...
44:16You're putting the care over.
44:18Everything was something that you're willing to find.
44:20It's just the Andrea station.
44:23I think it was not gonna leave no listen to me now.
44:24It's not going to be...
44:25I absolutely love either Deborah or Jenna to join our mission because we are an all-female organisation.
44:30Ready?
44:32Well, equally one of the two.
44:35Gentlemen, they'll be amazing too.
44:46Hello dragons.
44:47My name is Gold Shimbano and I am founder of Strike Back South Defence.
44:50I am here today looking for a £25,000 investment in return for a 10% equity.
44:55After being subjected to violence in a tax force working as a pharmacist, I...
45:00I started to learn self-defence skills so I could take back control of my own safety.
45:04And what started as...
45:05As a very personal journey has now grown into a global mission.
45:09Today, Strike Back South...
45:10Strike Back South Defence teaches women and girls practical life-saving skills across the world.
45:14We're not...
45:15We're martial art and we're not a sports-based system.
45:17We are a mission-driven global movement, teaching for...
45:20real-life scenarios women and girls face.
45:23Here in the UK, one woman is...
45:25killed every three days.
45:26And 3,000 women are subjected to violence every single day.
45:30In just 11 months since our launch, we have qualified 28 instructors and...
45:35launched 12 franchises and generated a turnover of over 83,000...
45:40We are already active across the UK, Ireland...
45:45Belgium and Australia.
45:47Our mission is bold and global.
45:49We want...
45:50to place a female self-defence instructor in every major town and city across the world.
45:57What I'd like to do now is invite...
46:00my co-instructor Hannah to demo one of the most common attacks that women face.
46:04This is something that...
46:05happened personally to me.
46:06And that's a hair pull or a pull from behind, possibly taking you to the ground.
46:10We teach a lot to girls and women how to be able to take control of the situation...
46:15before you go to the ground so you can get away and escape.
46:17That's what we're going to do.
46:21When you're ready, Hannah.
46:23Oi! Come here!
46:24Get off me!
46:25Back away from me!
46:26Leave me alone!
46:31It's simple.
46:32It's effective.
46:33And it's quick.
46:34Hannah, I would...
46:35I'd love you to come and have a go.
46:36Just to see how simple and easy this is.
46:38Yeah.
46:39And it's available on...
46:40Everybody can do it.
46:41Of course.
46:42Definitely.
46:43Self-Defence Clos...
46:45Classes for women with the potential to be franchised more widely...
46:49Other options...
46:50offering from Gulshan Bano.
46:52So I'm going to invite you to come forward
46:54and you're going to use the healer.
46:55Get out of your palm to strike the shield.
46:58This, on the street, works.
47:00It works very, very easily.
47:03Gulshan is seeking 25,000...
47:05Big breath in.
47:06Let's go.
47:07Nice.
47:10And again.
47:11Let's go this way.
47:12Awesome.
47:13And one more.
47:15A return for a 10% share in her business.
47:18I thought I had a more powerful punch, to be honest.
47:21That was powerful.
47:22Jenna Meek might have already packed a punch...
47:25I can.
47:28But will Gulshan's business prove a knockout?
47:30Amongst the Dragons.
47:35Um, you've definitely identified a problem.
47:38Yes.
47:39Um...
47:40And just tell us a little bit about your journey.
47:44Um...
47:45So I...
47:46I was a pharmacist.
47:47Went to medical school first, then went on to do pharmacy.
47:50But during my experience as a pharmacist, I've been followed back to my car.
47:54I've been attacked in a car park.
47:55I've been hauled over the counter at work, in a big chain pharmacy.
47:59I'm...
48:00I'm a petite woman.
48:01I'm five foot.
48:02And I think often people perceive you as an easy...
48:05target.
48:06And we got to a point where, after one of the most serious attacks, that I thought...
48:10I'm not going to be so lucky next time, and I need to learn some skills to keep me safe.
48:14And that's when I started learning.
48:15Self-Defence Skills.
48:16So, you launched this 11 months ago.
48:19I...
48:20I...
48:20As the franchise and certification model, yes.
48:22So, the business you're pitching today...
48:25Is...
48:25Is a franchise.
48:26Is the franchise, yes.
48:27So, can you just tell us how that franchise...
48:30works?
48:31So, the franchise model is...
48:32Um...
48:33Ladies come to us who are interested in becoming...
48:35instructors.
48:36They join us, and as a franchise, they get the Stripe Back brand.
48:40The business in a box.
48:41Hannah is one of our franchisees.
48:44So, the pay...
48:45The franchise fee.
48:46I train them as instructors, and then they go off and teach using the...
48:50brand.
48:51Right.
48:52So, your income off that franchise is what I'm interested in.
48:54Up to now.
48:55The 12 franchises we have, have been sold on an average of around 3,500.
49:00Right.
49:01Our current price now, just as we're moving on and scaling...
49:05is £15,000 for a franchise.
49:07Wow.
49:08It's quite...
49:09Quite punchy.
49:10You pay the £15,000 for a franchise.
49:12So, as a franchiseee...
49:15how much do you estimate that i would make a year a franchisee that
49:20means for example four classes a week yep your revenue can be anything from 4k to
49:255k a month so you're saying that i would make
49:30um 50 000 a year yeah and probably my overheads will be
49:3510 000 a year yeah and you want me to pay 15 000
49:40up front yeah so i would actually be doing a lot of it for not for charity but
49:45pro bono so our revenue model for instructors that are qualified and how they
49:50earn money is it's huge so we teach within schools we teach well-being
49:55days we teach one-to-ones we teach community groups we teach in corporates we teach at
49:59universities we teach
50:00colleges so there's a huge revenue plus their own classes
50:05gulfsha yes um it's really important work that you're doing
50:10well done and congratulations thank you are you profitable at the moment we're very profitable
50:15have you given the numbers yet yeah 83 000 turnover 83 000 turnover and the profit
50:20so my apologies my brain fog isn't great so total from june
50:25last year to now um was 83 950
50:30and our net profit was 15 801 but this
50:35is based on the figures where our franchises were around three and a half thousand pounds not
50:40on the new price point where we're going and what are you forecasting for this year
50:43for this year we would like
50:45to get um we'd like to double our franchises and we're going in now at the higher price point
50:50and one of the things that came back to us again and again is your franchise at 15 000 is too cheap
50:55really really three consultancy agencies said you should
51:00be pitching more around the 25 mark
51:02i'm at 25
51:03i'm at 25
51:04yeah
51:05yeah
51:06now have you asked hannah if she'd have paid 15 000
51:08no so this is
51:10where it does change.
51:12Hannah came in at a lower price.
51:15So now, price point now for our certificate...
51:17So we have a certification model, not just the franchise.
51:19The certification model...
51:20is women that are maybe currently running a business,
51:23or they run a yoga studio,
51:24or they have something they do at the moment.
51:25But they want to add self-defense into it.
51:27So they come along and they get qualified and certified.
51:29And then they...
51:30go off and teach under their own name and their own brand.
51:33And that's priced around £3,500.
51:35So the people that are currently interested in the franchise,
51:38it's a slightly different investor model.
51:40At the £15,000.
51:43OK.
51:44Erm...
51:45I can see your purpose.
51:46I can see your mission.
51:47And I almost want to say like,
51:48have you just increased that to £15,000?
51:50because you knew you were coming on Dragon's Den,
51:52and you knew you were going to get grilled
51:53about making this proper business.
51:54No, no, not at all.
51:55Not at all.
51:56We will attract different people.
51:58We've kept the low price...
52:00That's for the certified instructors.
52:02For those women that don't have that revenue and...
52:05don't want to run it as a hugely serious business,
52:08but want to run it as part-time.
52:10They pay the £3,500 for a certification,
52:12and they're done,
52:13and they can go and earn that money.
52:15The franchise, in terms of the brand,
52:17is for...
52:19It's a different...
52:20It's a different kind of woman or a business woman
52:22that we're attracting now
52:23that wants to scale.
52:25and grow this.
52:26Yeah.
52:27But I think this will be a massive barrier to...
52:30unleashing your purpose,
52:31because I don't know anyone
52:33that's got £15,000 sat around...
52:35to do something like this.
52:36Are you willing to change this?
52:37Are you really fixed on this?
52:40A financial model?
52:41No, 100% willing to change.
52:42OK.
52:43It was never to price out.
52:45The people were really needed.
52:47And that's where, I guess,
52:48the certification model does come in.
52:50because that price point is there for them.
52:52And that's why I think your model is broken,
52:54because...
52:55you're going to lose people at the certification point,
52:58and then you're not going to capitalise off...
53:00you're going to lose them to actually come back into business.
53:02So I think a day in a room, you can fix this.
53:05OK.
53:06This is not the issue.
53:07OK.
53:08It's simple.
53:09Do you know what I mean?
53:10That is a...
53:10simple fix.
53:11So, like, my question would be,
53:13if I was an investor and I...
53:15Yes.
53:15...started tomorrow...
53:16Yep.
53:17...what is your current barrier
53:18and what would you want my actual help from?
53:20I would want your help to...
53:23to help us manage how we are.
53:25scaling.
53:26This is still me by myself, Jen.
53:27And I'll hold my hand out and say,
53:29I'm not...
53:30the best person in the world.
53:31I'm a pharmacist...
53:32He's doing amazing.
53:33...and I'm a woman with a passion.
53:34Thanks, Jen.
53:35But what I do believe is in the mission
53:37and why this needs to be.
53:39Every female...
53:40across the world needs to have some basic skills.
53:42It's as simple as that.
53:45Goshen.
53:46I think what you're doing is incredibly important.
53:48But...
53:50I think you need someone who has...
53:52experience scaling a franchise model.
53:55but you actually don't need an investor to get that experience.
53:57And there's...
53:58there's a lot of great people out there who would be...
54:00willing to support a mission-driven business who have that...
54:02experience scaling a franchise model.
54:05But I don't have that experience.
54:07So I'm going to say that I'm out,
54:08but I wish you the very best.
54:10I wish you the best.
54:11And I wish you the best.
54:12Thanks, Jen.
54:13Great, thanks, Jen.
54:14Go, Shem.
54:15you've presented so well
54:18honestly your energy
54:20is great
54:23but this is
54:25an investment-led business
54:27because I think
54:29you will find
54:30that an investor will want to exploit the business to make money
54:34as opposed to
54:35perhaps
54:36maybe even philanthropically
54:39investing in this
54:40to support it
54:41to get it going
54:43to get this movement
54:44to do exactly
54:45what you're trying to achieve
54:47rather than
54:48how much money did we make this call
54:50and how much dividend can I take out
54:52because I think that could stifle the
54:55growth and the movement
54:56that you're trying to achieve
54:57I think all of this money
54:59that you're going to
55:00generate
55:01needs to be reinvested
55:03continuously
55:04which
55:05ultimately means
55:06that
55:06an investor can't ever get a return
55:08on their investment
55:09if they were to
55:10invest
55:11and for that reason
55:13sadly I'm out
55:14thank you
55:15thank you
55:16um
55:20I love your passion
55:22but as a business
55:24this
55:25this is your
55:26journey
55:26I don't really think
55:29you need
55:30a dragon
55:31because
55:32an investor
55:32as has already been said
55:33an investor wants to make a
55:35return on their investment
55:36you have a different mission
55:38and you've got to weigh that up
55:40you know
55:41okay
55:41so
55:42I'm going to wish you all the best
55:44but today
55:45this is not investable
55:46and I'm out
55:47thank you
55:47thank you so much
55:50I'm sat here getting incredibly
55:55I'm sat here getting incredibly
55:55annoyed at everyone speaking
55:57we're just getting labelled
55:59as an investor
55:59with like
56:00we're all the same
56:01I could not care less
56:03I'll get my money back
56:05because I know
56:05exactly how to build a business
56:06but I know exactly how to build a business
56:09it's got a purpose
56:10oh my god
56:11it's where I absolutely thrive
56:14like
56:14it's what
56:15wakes me up
56:16not worried about
56:16when I'm going to get my money back
56:18worrying about
56:18when we've done our mission
56:19on that
56:20business
56:20that's all I care about
56:23like
56:23you do that well
56:24with a good
56:25business mind
56:26the money just comes
56:27so I would love
56:30to join you on this
56:31so I would love to give you all of
56:35the money
56:35and for the 10% you asked for
56:37because I believe in you
56:38and I believe in the mission
