00:20ratings for Riverdale's October 11, second season premiere grew an unprecedented
00:2560 percent from its series launch nine months earlier. So what do we have to thank for this
00:30huge growth? No, not Bughead. Well, maybe a little. But also
00:35Netflix. As soon as Riverdale's first season concluded, all 13 episodes
00:40dropped on the streaming service, where sources say it was a summer breakout. Anyone else binge it there?
00:45Riverdale's season 2 premiere numbers are the first ironclad evidence of a linear TV windfall that
00:50broadcasters have hoped for. Since studios started putting current shows on streamers like Netflix,
00:55Amazon, and Hulu for the off season. But Riverdale's Netflix success did present an obstacle
01:00for the network. According to the CW executive VP of marketing and digital, Rick Haskins,
01:05probably more people watched it on Netflix thinking it was a Netflix show. A real challenge
01:10was taking those viewers and moving them over to the CW. So Haskins and his team did that with
01:15a slightly bigger marketing campaign for a second year show. And if you saw the billboards, you know it hinged
01:20on the simple pitch that new episodes are only available on the CW and its app.
01:25News appear to have gotten the message. After 24 hours on its own streaming site, the Riverdale
01:30season 2 premiere already ranked as the most streamed episode in the platform's history.
01:35And with Live Plus 3 ratings moving the linear TV hall 44% above the previous
01:40highest high to 3.3 million viewers, it seems clear exactly who was catching up
01:45on Netflix. Riverdale's teen audience is up 400%.
