Viewership for the acclaimed apocalyptic series continues to climb.

00:10has already been renewed for a second season.
00:13The renewal comes as no surprise as the post-apocalyptic drama
00:16based on the 2013 PlayStation game from Naughty Dog
00:19has been a breakout smash right out of the gate.
00:22The show's premiere episode earlier this month
00:24was HBO's second most-watched series debut in a decade.
00:28It has since climbed to 22 million viewers across all platforms.
00:32Executive producer Neil Druckmann said,
00:34I'm humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed
00:37that so many people have tuned in and connected
00:39with our retelling of Joel and Ellie's journey.
00:41He continued,
00:42The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew,
00:45and HBO exceeded my already high expectations.
00:49Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with Season 2.
00:53There's no official word yet on the creative plan for Season 2,
00:56but in The Hollywood Reporter's recent cover story,
00:59showrunners Druckmann and Mazin hinted that the show wouldn't waste time
01:02before delving into the storyline from The Last of Us Part 2 video game.
01:06The renewal comes before Sunday's upcoming third episode,
01:09which has been cited by critics as being a standout hour amid the season.
