00:00Mark is six years old.
00:05He's just being picked up from preschool by his mother and older sister.
00:10Mark knows that while his mother gave birth to his sister, he is adopted.
00:15He's also being picked up by his mother and a mother.
00:20I'm really excited to be here.
00:24Do you like me?
00:25Mark was
00:30two years old when he was adopted by Katilin and Andras Lovash. They already had
00:35three biological daughters but wanted a boy and therefore decided to adopt.
00:40What mattered to them was that the child was healthy and still very young.
00:45His ethnicity was of no importance to them.
00:50We had to think about it.
00:53We had to think about it.
00:54We had to think about it.
00:55If a roma-kisfiút ajánlana ki,
00:57akkor roma-kisfiúnk lesz.
01:00Azért ugye 80-90% esélye volt, és hát be is jött.
01:05But not everyone in Hungary thinks this way.
01:08According to experts, only about one...
01:10...fif the prospective adoptive parents in the country
01:12do not state a preference when it comes to a child's background.
01:16Although it's not permitted in the Hungarian adoption system
01:18to either record or distribute...
01:20...to disclose a child's background,
01:22it is common for applicants to note in the remarks section of the application...
01:25...that they don't wish to adopt Romani children.
01:28Even though the majority of children...
01:30...in Hungarian care homes are Roma.
01:32Mark's biological family was so poor that he was...
01:35...taken into care immediately after birth.
01:37Despite widespread stereotypes in Hungarian society...
01:40...his family always speaks positively about his Roma identity.
01:45When we, we must say, as you know,
01:47we did not understand the same as the adults in the same foot.
01:48...but it is often because of our婚式,
01:50which is confirmed as the child's brother,
01:51....when it is very well.
01:54At the end, we need to know their parents.
01:55In the same way,
01:57we need to know them,
01:59If we were looking for the same child,
02:01if we were looking for the same children,
02:03as the child's child's child,
02:04...as the child's child is more about their children,
02:10the age of 10.
02:15Ezra befogadó családomban történt, csak íronban jött egy kérdés, hogy
02:20és hogy mi a származásunk vagyok. Ők így ilyen lazán kimondták, hogy hát...
02:25Hát roma. Hát bennem is összedölt egy világ.
02:28Van a társadalomnak egy negati...
02:30...mogatív megépívése ugye a romákkal aztán van.
02:35Ez mindenképp egy ilyen szígyönként ért.
02:40Köszönöm szépen!
02:45Köszönöm szépen!
02:47Köszönöm szépen!
02:50Nem szeretném, hogy engem bentsanak...
02:55...a közvetlen családtagjaimat bentsenek, tehát hogy oda szóljanak...
03:00...be szóljanak.
03:01Én nem szeretnék most egy előre változtatni az el.
03:04Miért?
03:05Márs?
03:06Márs?
03:07Vígat, málom!
03:08Juján a Csikéi...
03:10...is a Psychologist at Moses Corb...
03:12...an organization that supports adoptive parents and adoptees.
03:15In her experience, prejudice against Roma runs very deep in Hungary.
03:55If you don't want to give a little bit of a Roman child a little bit,
04:00if you don't want to give a little bit of a personal experience,
04:05then it's better if you don't want to give a little bit of a personal experience.
04:10It's the same thing, it's the same thing, it's the same thing.
04:15Because it's just a heart.
04:17In Hungary there are currently more children
04:20waiting to be adopted than there are potential adoptive parents.
04:24And most of these children
04:25are Romani.
04:26Because prospective adoptive parents know this,
04:29experts say
04:30it's likely that the majority will continue to express specific preferences regarding a child's background.
04:35when applying to adopt.
