00:00SMILE AND LEARN
00:04Hello, friends!
00:08Today we're going to talk about a topic that's everywhere!
00:12Operations with decimal numbers.
00:16Even though they have points,
00:20these operations aren't sharp, huh?
00:24Hahaha!
00:26Decimals are all around us, in measurements, recipes, prices.
00:32Knowing how to work with them is very useful.
00:36So, let's get started!
00:38As we already know, decimals represent a part smaller than the unit.
00:44For example, 0.1 is one-tenth of the unit,
00:48and 0.01 is one-hundredth of the unit.
00:54Look at this number.
00:56The 5 is the whole number,
00:58the 7 is the decimal part,
01:00and in-between is the decimal point that separates them.
01:04Adding and subtracting with decimals
01:08Adding and subtracting decimals is not very complicated,
01:12but you have to be careful with something very important.
01:16You have to make sure the decimal points of all the numbers are lined up.
01:22The units go with the units,
01:24the tenths with the tenths,
01:26the hundredths with the hundredths,
01:28and so on.
01:30By doing this, we respect the place value of each digit.
01:36Sounds easy, right?
01:38Well, it is!
01:40If one number has fewer decimal places than the one we're adding it to,
01:46we can add zeros at the end to make it easier to solve the problem.
01:52To add 3.15 plus 2.4,
01:56we can add a zero after the 4,
01:58so that we add 3.15 plus 2.40.
02:04Let's do it!
02:065 plus 0 is 5.
02:084 plus 1 is 5.
02:10Great! Let's write it down.
02:13Now we come to the decimal point,
02:15but we already know that we continue the problem as if it weren't there,
02:20and add it at the end.
02:223 plus 2 gives us 5.
02:25Perfect!
02:26We add the decimal point,
02:28and the result is 5.55.
02:32Don't forget to put the decimal point in the result.
02:36Let's look at an example of subtraction.
02:40It looks more complicated, right?
02:42Don't worry, it's not.
02:45We just have to follow the same rule.
02:50Line up the decimal points, units with units, tenths with tenths,
02:55and hundredths with hundredths.
02:57Oops! 2.3 doesn't have any hundredths.
03:00Do you remember what we do in these cases?
03:03We add a zero to the end.
03:05So, we subtract 7.86 minus 2.30.
03:11If we subtract 0 from 6, we are left with 6, right?
03:16Great!
03:17Let's continue.
03:188 minus 3 is 5.
03:21So, we write that down.
03:23Now we come to the decimal point,
03:25but as we said, we continue working and add it at the end.
03:327 minus 2 is 5.
03:34So, the result of our subtraction is 5.56.
03:38But be careful!
03:39We still need to add the decimal point to the result.
03:44We put it right here, below the other decimal points.
03:47And now, 7.86 minus 2.3 is 5.56.
03:55Perfect, friends!
03:57Now you know how to add and subtract decimals.
04:01Remember, the secret is to place the decimal point correctly in every problem.
