00:00We've made it to World Boar Island, and here is our first wild boar!
00:18Water fight!
00:23It's me!
00:53Peak summertime, yeah, it is supposed to peak summertime.
01:09The weather is certainly hard to read at the moment. We seem to get total extremes of weather.
01:14Certainly affected the grass that's growing.
01:17The next major stress, of course, is making crop.
01:20If the sun's shining and the heat is on, we need to be out in the fields making hay.
01:25The crop's very, very light, which is worrying.
01:28We also need to get our sheep sheared too.
01:31Oh good, a bare belly, we like that.
01:34Oh my God, it's such a physical thing to do.
01:37It's a young fella's game. So I'm almost 70 now, so I've got to think about what comes next.
01:42It's something the family are discussing at the moment to see where the future lies for everyone.
01:48It's nice for me to pass on my shears.
01:55We also need to keep making progress with the house.
01:59This old plaster's going on all the time.
02:02It's never ending.
02:04I should be reasonably fit by the end of this, really.
02:07Plaster size.
02:09I don't think I'll be much use, but I'm willing.
02:16Hey!
02:18Get off those bales.
02:20There is absolutely heaps and heaps to do.
02:22It's like graffiti.
02:24It's that continuous pushing forward.
02:29And that's just the nature of the game.
02:32I mean, there's lots of distractions.
02:36Yay!
02:39We're pulled in a lot of different directions.
02:42I've got a big family and a lot going on.
02:45Happy birthday to you.
02:48I think I forgot to tell people my birthday's tomorrow.
02:53Make a wish!
02:54Don't actually spit all over the cake.
02:57Stop!
02:58Yeah, we did.
03:27I'll make peacock noises.
03:38Wait!
03:39Wait!
03:40What?
03:41She's not in there!
03:44We did have some peacock eggs.
03:47Three of them didn't survive.
03:49But I think she still has a baby.
03:51Come on, let's go on and look.
03:53Where is she?
03:57Come on, me!
04:00Come on!
04:02Let's see if I can follow the track.
04:05That way.
04:07Good one.
04:08Come on, bird.
04:10Come here, buddy.
04:12That's Peter.
04:13Okay?
04:14This is your, like, wife's feather.
04:16Can you tell me where it is?
04:17Can you?
04:18I got something now.
04:22We found the peacock!
04:27Where's the chick?
04:28Oh, there.
04:29I'm very happy that the chick's okay.
04:35Come on, Billy.
04:36We're almost there.
04:46Honestly, this is amazing.
04:48Finally!
04:49Finally!
04:50Finally!
04:51A bit of sunshine.
04:52Sid!
04:53Sun's out!
04:54Bun's out!
04:55Hello!
04:56You're doing a good job here, David Hammond.
05:00Here, get cooled down before you go back to work.
05:05Everybody's so cheerful when the sun's out.
05:10So, for 50 weeks of the year, we must be miserable.
05:11Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
05:16What's the red in these?
05:17That was good timing.
05:18You'll regret that.
05:19It's such a rare occasion.
05:21Get the vitamin D levels up, cos you're not going to find anywhere nicer in the world.

06:00.
06:02Sort of like a monumental time is the plastering.
06:06.
06:07You're trying to emulate what people were doing 200 years ago, 300 years ago.
06:12.
06:13.
06:14.
06:15.
06:16.
06:17.
06:18.
06:19.
06:20,
06:21.
06:22.
06:23.
06:24.
06:25which is the wall between the old house and the barn that's all we've really got
06:30to do now with the insulating plaster as such and then we've got the lads upstairs
06:35they're doing a skim coat for us trying to give us a bit of a push
06:38call-ups an old rogue a bit like Clive there's a way back but he's gone into
06:44the lime plastering many many years ago and there's a bit of a specialist over
06:48in Kirby by doing the Kirk lads you've taken them back to where they were it
06:55suits the area and it suits the building any other way than this and you've lost
07:01other character all houses but I've got a story to be held you know there's people
07:06out there you know it's working on it they can tell you the story attached to
07:11these days you know you you don't get that on a new building site you've just
07:20got to be patient just got to take your time
07:29the thing with this site is there's not been a quick job there's not been a
07:34single job we've done what you can say we're going to be able to crack on with
07:37that and it'll will fly through it they're going to be on with us for a
07:41week or so just get that final coat on there and then hopefully the house is
07:46you know it's blasted then with it's just a matter of waiting for it to dry
07:52yes it's like rest of them we don't like it when it gets too hot and it's too
07:58warm today for it
08:01come on David get in the puddle
08:09slime
08:18come on then Clem let's go and have a look if there's any grass in this field
08:31we're going to cut for here very shortly I don't think there's a lot it's a beautiful day isn't it lovely
08:43because of the drought in the spring it seems to have upset these these meadows it's certainly just quite strange at the moment the grass in the field should be really thick and heavy now and it certainly isn't
08:55now that look at that you're just still on that that's a lovely thing what is that is that an orchid of some kind
09:07it's a I think it's a devil's
09:25devil's but scabious is that right
09:30Clem's very interested in all things nature and all things farming so yes you're just a woman to have with you
09:36and great enthusiasm do you know what that one is
09:39oh it's a
09:41I think I know that one but I can't think of it
09:44I know I know but I can't remember it they're edible
09:47edible
09:49when I was Clem's age I spent a lot of time on a farm near to where I lived and it was a lovely old-fashioned farm
10:03I can remember putting hay and loose where we used to sweep it up to the barns and put it in by hand and without being bales
10:13went and we used to mow just a bit of a field
10:17used to call them plats and there's more a field like this and maybe mowing it in three
10:21three three lungs so it was a hell of a procedure took all summer where sometimes now
10:27they can do a whole farm in an afternoon with these great machines
10:31it's quite good we have the new machinery but then I think we should have kept some of the old
10:37things we used to have because then now we're always just on electric and and it's not good for the climate
10:44so like using horses and stuff like that instead of cars would be much better
10:58he likes his fields being really long and full of grass and animals but unless it doesn't mean that many
11:05so he's not really happy about it
11:08so he just goes on a bit and then grumbles and just sits drinking a cup of tea
11:14there's a hay rattle
11:17there's a rattle and does he rattle can you hear it
11:20yeah the seeds are inside them little pods aren't they
11:23and it all dries out and then they open and the seeds fall out
11:26this one's opening
11:27and away we go
11:30we've almost passed the time for flowers I think haven't we they've almost done the thing
11:35a flower attracts a bug and then once the bugs are here it attracts birds and things like that
11:42and it just carries on makes a long line that continues really forever
11:46so they're very important these meadows a lot of things depend upon them
11:51pretty much like a lifeline
11:53it is
11:56I'm worried definitely because I in all my years here I've never seen the meadows like this before
12:03I think the best thing to do will be just to try and take what there is and and see what happens after that
12:08well there isn't going to be many bears of hay is the Clem
12:13uh uh
12:14oh well it er
12:16disappointed but
12:18can't do much about it
12:20hmm
12:21house looks lovely in sunshine Clem
12:23it does
12:25let's see if anybody's around
12:47come on
12:51oh hello

14:07I'm really happy because it's nice to have relatives there to just help you out those candles
14:15how old are you today Nancy?
14:17how actually old are you?
14:18nine
14:19nine
14:20well I thought she was either four or five
14:22four or five
14:23there's nine candles
14:24can you imagine she's actually the little one
14:26she's the smallest
14:27the littlest one is now nine
14:28yeah in one year from now mum's going to have no one under single digits in children wise
14:34that's a bit of a scary fart isn't it?
14:37the children are growing up
14:39here we are
14:41and I suppose as they're growing up
14:45they're more independent and more
14:49they're more outgoing
14:51for sure
14:52right
14:53get some cake
14:54get some cake
14:55you want to stay with your family forever
14:59but you want to turn more independent
15:02free life
15:03so yeah
15:06it's nice
15:08being one step older
15:13Nancy hope you have the best day ever
15:16make it dance
15:18yeah
15:19yeah
15:20good
15:21fun
15:22it's easier to ride a normal bike than this
15:25when you're older you can just remember that day when everyone was here and no one was busy
15:31they made time to be there for you
15:35I think I forgot to tell people my birthday is tomorrow, not today
15:45not today
15:46ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yeah
15:50Oh, yeah.
15:53I like gifts. I like cake.
15:56At least that's good.
15:58I think I need more practice.
16:07Right, that's as ready.
16:20We're at the middle of July. It's a busy time for us now.
16:31We have our grass to cut.
16:34And the other big thing we've got to do is shear sheep.
16:37That'll do.
16:39Everything that has to happen this month
16:42is totally dependent on weather.
16:45You'd expect July to be settled and fine most of that time.
16:50We had it baking hot for a few days,
16:52and now we've had three really wet days.
16:55How are you, Nelly? How are you?
16:59We're at that place where if we can't do one, we do the other.
17:02So we're just beginning to shear sheep.
17:08I think Amanda's going to shear,
17:10and maybe Miley a bit later,
17:12and I'm not if I can avoid it.
17:14Hello.
17:17I sometimes think I'm just an extension of Nell, your dog.
17:21I'm just not quite as responsive.
17:24How nice to sit against.
17:26Pardon?
17:27How nice to sit against.
17:31It was a joke.
17:34Right.
17:36Me and Amanda, for some crazy reason, this worked all right.
17:39We're not together, but we can keep things going to suit everybody,
17:43and that's what we intend to do.
17:47Do you want a coffee?
17:49I made you a drink.
17:50Well...
17:54Things are good.
17:55And I think being busy plays a huge part
17:58in keeping everybody's focus.
18:03You brought me a right packet here to do.
18:07Oh, good. A bare belly. We like that.
18:10This is the first time these sheep have been clipped.
18:12They're shearing virgins.
18:14So they're more wriggly.
18:16They're more woolly.
18:18Because basically they wonder what's happening.
18:24She does very well.
18:29She enjoys shearing.
18:30But there's a lot of thought goes into this,
18:32and that's my specialist subject.
18:37I've sheared thousands of sheep in me time.
18:40I'm getting old, and so my back doesn't like it.
18:43I'm here to supervise and make sure everything's done
18:47to me liking.
18:48I love shearing.
18:52I always wanted to be able to do every aspect
18:55of being a shepherd.
18:57Traditionally, it wouldn't have been, obviously, a woman's job.
19:00You'd have been wrapping the wool
19:02rather than actually clipping and shearing.
19:04So I kind of like that.
19:06I don't feel like I'm sort of, like, just taking the good bits.
19:10That I'll get my hands dirty and do the hard bits.
19:14But I just like the challenge of it.
19:16Now people say, oh my God, it's such a physical thing to do.
19:21And isn't it brutal?
19:23No, it's not brutal.
19:25No sheep were harmed in the clipping of these sheep.
19:27There's not a single cut on them.
19:29Yeah, they might have done a bit of yoga, a few stretches,
19:31but you know what? I'm doing yoga and a few stretches
19:33in order to do it.
19:37And if you've ever seen a sheep that's got maggots,
19:40that is brutal.
19:42So this is what it's about.
19:43It's about preventing that.
19:44You know, they do not naturally shed their wool.
19:46If you leave them, they will just get woolier and woolier
19:49and woolier and woolier.
19:50So it's a welfare thing.
19:52The wool has to come off.
19:57I mean, the wool used to be a very important thing.
20:00When I was shearing a lot of sheep, back in the midst of time,
20:0620 pence was we were shearing 20 pence.
20:09We were clipping on a good day 200.
20:12That 40 quid, that was a fortune.
20:14Absolute fortune.
20:16Guys were getting 20 quid a week on farm work at that point.
20:20So we were rolling in it.
20:22We were smoking cigars, drinking and carrying on.
20:25So yeah, it was a great fun.
20:27We had a great time.
20:33Wool was a valuable commodity.
20:36And it still should be.
20:38Because it's a natural product.
20:40It's environmentally friendly.
20:42It ticks all the green boxes.
20:45But unfortunately, it's fallen out of favour
20:47because it also requires a bit more effort and more work
20:52to actually look after it.
20:57So it must be heading towards this time, yeah?
21:00I brought you some ties here in the fridge.
21:04How are you doing, lads?
21:23How are you doing, all right?
21:25You've eventually turned up.
21:27Oh, yes.
21:29Well, anyways, I'm really pleased that you fellas have turned up.
21:32You can see again, it's all moving on.
21:37Finally, these walls are almost finished.
21:39The final coat of plaster's going on.
21:43Well, my old mate Collip's here.
21:46He knows and understands this, I suppose you call it an art, very well.
21:52This must be your partner in crime, then.
21:54Aye, that's right, aye.
21:56We used to...
21:57We used to...
21:59We used to have a bit of...
22:01We had some bloody laughs.
22:03It's lovely to have a catch-up with him,
22:05because back in the day,
22:06me and him used to shear together.
22:09I don't think I'll be much use, but I'm willing.
22:13I don't know whether I'm able, but yes, I can carry water or something.
22:15Clive, as long as you can sign a cheque, you're of something.
22:20There you are.
22:22Right, come on.
22:24Let's have a look.
22:25By doing the old lime plaster, all the curves and the bends in the walls and the windows,
22:38there's no square angles at all, and so I think it looks absolutely lovely,
22:43and perfectly fitting for this old place.
22:46Aye, I'll go in on up here.
22:48Do you ever think, Clive, you were going to handle this stuff?
22:54What?
22:56Bottles the shovel.
22:57Good lad.
22:58Good lad.
23:00Right?
23:01Right?
23:02Did you let me have a little go?
23:03Well, where do you want me to start?
23:04Here.
23:05Here.
23:06Anywhere.
23:07And so I just want a bit on.
23:09Just not start here.
23:10That is that old?
23:11Well, I've not done ever.
23:12Right, put a bit more on.
23:13That's it.
23:15That's it.
23:16Huh?
23:18Yeah, we're getting confident.
23:20It can dry too quickly, it can dry too slowly, and it has to, one coat has to be finished
23:25before the next one at a certain moisture, and so it's a really, really complicated thing to do.
23:34Isn't that amazing?
23:37Keep up the ring, get it drunk.
23:40That's it.
23:42Ah, look at that, lads.
23:43You need a good eye, likely.
23:47How's that?
23:48See?
23:49Clive, you've been practicing this, haven't you?
23:51I've never done that before, lads.
23:52I've never skimmed.
23:54Last time he did that, he was waddled and daub like my kale muck.
23:57It's a good atmosphere and it's a pleasure to be here.
24:02It just makes you realise how lucky you are to be in this wonderful place.
24:07Good, that bit, isn't it?
24:08I wasn't afraid of that bit.
24:10Just put a guess on.
24:12Clive wasn't here.
24:16To think how this was when we started and how lovely now.
24:19Yeah.
24:20Marvellous, really.
24:21Marvellous.
24:22Three more, please.
24:46What's going on now, Clive?
24:48So, Miley, when he's ready, there's only two sheep left to clip, two hogs.
24:53Right, so I'll go and get the tyre, yeah?
24:54And then it's back and then you can unload that, yeah?
24:56Yeah.
24:57Right, okay.
24:58Yeah.
24:59I think that's the way forward.
25:00Okay, cool.
25:01Come on, Nelly.
25:02Come on.
25:03Come on, Nelly.
25:04Come on.
25:05Come on.
25:10Right, Marley, it's getting a bit mucky in here, but it's fine.
25:12Just clip them last ones, please.
25:14Yeah, we do.
25:15Now, you've never clipped with one of these.
25:18Nope.
25:19A flexible one.
25:20I've not.
25:21But, er, please just have the way you start.
25:32Chains are somewhat I started learning, er, a couple weeks ago,
25:35and er, I haven't done that many, but getting the hang of it.
25:38Let's get to that backbone.
25:41Well done, that's really good.
25:43You know, I mean, if I do another hundred, I might be a bit sick of it this year, but
25:49I'll be faster than Mum and Dad in no time.
25:52Perfect.
25:53Right.
25:54Well done, Marley.
25:56By the time I was eight, I was going to be a farmer, that was it.
25:59You know, and nowadays, young fellas, it's changed, because there's so much going on.
26:06There's so many options.
26:08There's nothing nicer than this, if it's in your heart, you know.
26:13A bit rough, but I will.
26:15Right, did I get this other?
26:17Yeah?
26:18Yep.
26:19This is your house, so hopefully it'll be easier.
26:25I'm the eldest here now on the farm, so I know a lot of the pressure now is on me, you could say, but, you know, it's just one of them things.
26:34I haven't thought about into the future of what I'd want to do that far yet, but definitely something with agriculture, but there's a lot more agriculture in the world than just little old hill farms.
26:46Keep going up there.
26:48Right, that's lovely.
26:49That's lovely.
26:50So now then, yeah, across now, isn't it?
26:52And you get this leg cleaned out.
26:55Perfect.
26:56This year, you can stay and do your own sheep, or you can do someone else's sheep, and you can even, you know, get qualifications to go abroad and share on a massive scale and open up a lot of job opportunities all over the world.
27:10It's the same with a lot of the traditional skills about farming, so yeah, it's just a gateway to more, I guess.
27:16I think whatever you do in life, you've got to want to do it, you've got to love it, and if you don't, well, it ain't working for you, is it?
27:22What the future holds, I guess you can never quite be sure.
27:30So yeah, it's something the family are discussing at the moment, and to see where the future lies for everyone.
27:52Woo!
28:08You don't realise there's such a big drop below here, do you?
28:11You know, you know.
28:12The road up to Antijohns is problematic at the best of times, because it is steep, it is rocky, it is literally carved into the hillside.
28:24It has its issues, but things have taken rather a turn for the worse, because about a third of the way up the track on the left-hand side, there's been a bit of a collapse.
28:34I mean, look how wobbly it is through there.
28:37The weather has a big part to play with this as well, because it was so dry at lambing time, and the ground dried out, and then there's been an absolute downpour, has basically meant that some foundations have become unstable.
28:56Yeah.
28:57Because you can see all the water that's gone down there.
29:01It is absolutely vital that we get it repaired, because of course, we have traffic that needs to get up to Antijohns.
29:12And the very, very, very last thing that we want is actually for there to be some kind of road collapse.
29:18This is actually about whether you come a cropper and end up in the river below.
29:25So today, I've had a call in the cavalry.
29:34We're not supposed to be here today, we're supposed to be at a digging job, but Mandy shouts loudest, so we're here.
29:40We're here.
29:44Having Reuben around the place makes everything so much better.
29:49It makes everything so much easier.
29:53Everybody is growing up at a rate of knots, and everybody is taking on more responsibility.
30:00With the track being so narrow and the bridge being unstable, we're going to bring one of the smaller vintage tractors up today.
30:11We're putting them road plates on top of the bridge, so it's trying to spread the weight of all the vehicles on the bridge.
30:20Basically, we need this one at that side, and this big one kind of lapped over ever so slightly.
30:29Right, so you just shuffle them over there.
30:32Just shuffle them? Do you know how many they are?
30:33Right.
30:35I probably got first into lighting old machinery and stuff like that, when Reuben bought his first classic tractor.
30:47I've just started liking them ever since.
30:51I like messing around with machinery and doing farm work.
30:55A hobby and a job, really.
30:59They don't work.
31:00They don't work.
31:10Sydney is definitely following in Reuben's footsteps, and you know what?
31:15I love that.
31:17Can we try this bar, Reuben's?
31:20Oh, you've got it moving there, Sonny.
31:29I'd say it's got a good hold there, to be honest.
31:30It doesn't look too bad, does it, really?
31:32I mean, you're not going to go speeding over it, are you?
31:34You're going to take it steady.
31:36Oh, that's really great, so thank you.
31:39We'll see you later, all.
31:44Sometimes just keeping things simple and functional is where it's at.
31:49Because your tractor, it doesn't have much in the way of any sort...
31:54Well, it hasn't got any electronics on it, has it, or anything like that?
31:57I put an air horn on it.
31:58You put an air horn on it.
31:59Of course you have, Sid.
32:02It's the rural version of the boy racer.
32:05You know, he wants to have something that impresses his friends.
32:09Maybe even the girls, who knows?
32:12See if they work now.
32:13The fact that it comes in the form of a Fordson Major, I think he's good.
32:21You know, once upon a time, it would have been a Capri, wouldn't it?
32:24Or a...
32:26Or some little sort of, like, hot hatch.
32:30This is very motivational, Sid, but I don't think you're just feeling it, are you?
32:34Would you prefer a sausage roll?
32:36Yeah.
32:38It'll do the job temporarily until we get someone in
32:40who can basically reinstate the bridge and put it back to how it was.
32:44We've transported stone and sand and cement
32:48and goodness knows what up there on tractors.
32:53Now these bogus guys!
32:59But let's be honest, it isn't over yet.
33:01We've got a lot of timber, we've got floorboards,
33:04we've got a lot of materials still to get up there.
33:07So it's really important that we obviously have safe access.
33:17Perfect! Well that's exactly what we wanted.
33:19That's exactly how we wanted it to be.
33:21We've got a lot of cool stuff.
33:23That's exactly what we wanted it to be.
33:25Yeah.
33:27Yeah.
33:41That's exactly what we wanted it to be.
33:46Well today we're baling hay. I've been straddling out on my little tractor and just to keep
33:59turning it over, keep it moving, keep the sun on it. Miley is rowing it up, a rake that
34:12puts it all into a row, and then Robert follows the rows and puts it into the round bales.
34:25It's dead easy in beautiful weather, but it's a nightmare in catchy weather, you know. We've
34:33struggled to get it done, but you know we've made it, we're a little bit late, we're ten
34:40days later than we should be. So by tonight, if nothing breaks, it will be over.
34:52Hey Nicky. Hey. Get off those bales. You need to help me. Dad wants us to spray these so he
35:02knows where they came from. So we're gonna put hilltop on it because that's the field
35:05that they've come from. So you can do some of these, but you just do, that's just so
35:11he knows which field it's come from. Some give better grass than others. HT. Can you do that?
35:15Mm-hmm.
35:17When you come back home, you are given jobs pretty much immediately as you walk through
35:25the door. And it's just nice. It's nice to get stuck back in again. Well done. Let's go.
35:30Do we need to do all of these things? Every single one of these.
35:36Spider. Spider. Should we try and do a bubble writing one? Yeah.
35:43That bubble writing one was so good. That's the best one, isn't it? Yeah.
35:51The other thing, the crops, there's almost just half of what they normally should be.
36:11People that haven't enough crop to feed the cattle and sheep in winter, they will have
36:16to buy. There isn't a lot out there to buy, so it's gonna be incredibly dear. You have
36:22to feed your animals with summer. It hasn't been the easiest of summers, but finally we've
36:33been around, we've sheared the sheep, we've made the hay, so yeah, there's a chance that
36:39we'll survive another winter.
36:46Hey Dad. Come let's go and jump in the wall. Come and jump in the wall. Yeah! You want
37:11to jump in some wall? No. You can't be a shepherd if you've never jumped the wall. In that case,
37:18go on, get jumping. It's nice to go in the wall with Dad sometimes, because get him out! When
37:28Dad was little, like a young boy, a young shepherd, he didn't have much wool and it was very valuable.
37:35It's just like life's changed a bit. No! Normally, he's always out the hill somewhere, so it's really
37:42like nice to just have the moments where you're not in a rush and you can do your own thing.
37:50I don't particularly take time out to entertain them, they entertain me. No, I'm not gonna do it!
37:57Right, lasses, I want to say at least double, triple, so much, oh!
38:04Just do it.
38:06Good lads. Keep it safe, Clem.
38:11Nancy's very good at doing flips and stuff like she's in ballet, but I'm not as good. Come
38:18on, Clem. Come here! Clem, he's better at catching sheep and shearing. Come on, Clem.
38:25Look at his muscles. And then look at this.
38:30Nancy's like...
38:36As long as I can hear them laughing and crying, we're fine.
38:39I did it, Dad! Watch!
38:41I really love my dad, and it's nice to spend time with him. And you're just doing something
38:48that you both want to do, and it's just nice to be with your family.
38:56Good lads.
38:58It's nice to spend time with Dad and Mum, because they normally don't really get any days off.
39:04Da-da-da!
39:06Well done.
39:07Just like little moments. It's kind of bonding time.
39:10One last time, and I want you to do flip-overs.
39:13His dad jokes aren't that good, though.
39:16Good, good. Well done, lasses.
39:19The day is a dingy summer's day in the Dales. There's no hay timing going on. So we've decided
39:32that we're going to come over to Hawes, to the Countryside Museum. There has never been a time when I've ever actually had you all together like this, to be honest with you. They've usually run off by now.
39:45Should've brought a sheepdog, shouldn't we?
39:47We're also bringing Philip. They're beautiful. Who is the joiner who is working on Auntie John's, his family, his children.
39:58Morning, how are you? How are you? I've brought a tribe with me today. I've brought the flock.
40:16Nance, come on. See how strong she is.
40:23Taking the children to the Countryside Museum is really to give them a little feel of what life would have been like for Anthony Clarkson and his family 200 years ago.
40:35Who wants a haircut? No, no, no!
40:44They can really immerse themselves in what the living arrangements would have been like.
40:50Through there, around, down, and off. Do you know what I like? That you're all sitting here chatting whilst you're doing that, and that is how it would have been.
41:03You wouldn't have been on socials. You wouldn't have been TikToking.
41:07Hey, guys. How you doing? This is my snooze. Oh, my God. Subscribe!
41:15Because of the sort of place that we're at now, with the restoration of Auntie John's, I feel like there's actually things that I can glean from this place.
41:26Of course, it's given me a bit of inspiration and hopefully pointing me in the right direction with some of the fixtures and fittings.
41:36In our garage, we've got quite a lot of these bits and pieces.
41:42I've got this mind of information within the diaries, but I want to be able to visualise it.
41:48So anything that helps bring the place to life and gives me ideas and inspires me, it's got to be good.
41:54We're at a fireplace, Philip. Yeah? All right.
41:57Now, then, this is definitely what we've been looking for here, isn't it? Yeah.
42:04This is all about taking out the temporary stove that we put in the fireplace and fit in something more like what would have been there originally.
42:19Got this bit. Yes. Yeah.
42:21Half of this bit coming out from the other side, but we need to reassemble the range.
42:28It's made up of components, isn't it? It is, yes.
42:31And we need to find the components. I'm not even bothered whether it matches.
42:37I was reckoning we only had the room to put an oven and then a decent-sized grate.
42:42But looking at this, it doesn't, size-wise...
42:48It's very deceiving just what's gone in there, actually.
42:51I want it, obviously, to look the part, but really, really, it has to work.
42:57It has to actually function for me.
43:00I mean, that's your boiler, so that's where your water goes.
43:05When I talked to someone who lived at Raven's Seat back in the 20s,
43:08he remembered opening the window and filling the boiler with snow.
43:11When it comes to doing something somewhere like Andy John's, it's...
43:16Because it's not an off-the-shelf kind of a place, a lot of what we're doing
43:20is seeing what you can find and seeing what you can put together,
43:23because it's a unique place.
43:26You can cover everything, can't you?
43:27Absolutely.
43:28You've got your hot water, you can cook, you can fry.
43:30So, really speaking, this is sort of the next challenge ahead.
43:36After the plaster work is done, it's to get that fireplace working
43:39and looking good.
43:42I want to see the cow's face.
43:44I want to sit on the stool.
43:48Come on, you lot!
43:50It's time for us to get ourselves back to the farm.
43:53Thankfully, the kids have headed off,
44:13and I've got a little bit of time for myself,
44:16so I've heard that the plastering's done,
44:18so I'm going to go and have a little look round and see what's what.
44:23I think that is incredible.
44:37It's certainly gone from derelict ruin to house.
44:42I feel like we're just on the cusp of actually becoming home.
44:47Home.
44:53The people that I've had on plastering, the builders, Collip, Richard,
44:57they've done a fantastic job because they understand it.
45:01They haven't tried to straighten things out.
45:06Look at it! Look at that!
45:08This epitomises everything that we as a family are about.
45:19It can withstand storms, it can stand the test of time,
45:23and hopefully it's here for posterity for the kids and beyond.
45:27If you think of what it actually was in the beginning,
45:33it was literally a complete ruin.
45:38I mean, you could see the sky from here.
45:43Look at it!
45:44It is far above any expectations that I had.
45:49I mean, here I have actually got the reminder of where we began.
45:55So this beautiful painting actually is of Auntie John's
45:59in its original state.
46:01It was painted by a local artist,
46:03and it's going to take pride of place here at the house.
46:06It's going to be a good home, this. I can feel it.
46:36It goes with Auntie Young.
46:40A two-year-old new video.
46:41Please take care!
46:55Well, you'll probably do the best to try.
46:57You look …
47:00It списled is prevalent such as it'sragism.
