00:00A delightful Tuesday evening to all of you, yours truly, Ice Martinez here, who speaks to bring you PTV News Now.
00:08And we kick off our stories for tonight, with Senator Rizzo Anteverez took to the podium yesterday evening
00:14for her privileged speech in the Senate to counterclaims grumpy old and Chinese-leaning Senator Rodante Marcoleta
00:19made in relaying sentiments expressed to him by the Chinese envoy in an up-close interview recently.
00:27Marcoleta, one of China's echo chambers in the country on the WPS maritime dispute, said
00:33the Chinese ambassador is worried over the continued portrayal of Beijing as the heel in all the WPS encounters
00:40between Philippine Security Patrol forces against the Chinese Navy, Coast Guard and militia vessels.
00:48He also bewailed how continued misrepresentation of these engagements or encounters could turn a spark
00:56into a raging inferno.
00:58Anteverez reminded him the fight for one's sovereignty is never a small thing
01:03and chastised her Queensland colleague how China wants to convince the Filipinos,
01:08the way it did to Marcoleta, to believe their propaganda rather than what their eyes see
01:14in the videos and photos documenting all the acts of harassment and bullying
01:18against Filipino security patrols and fishermen in the country's maritime territory.
01:26The country's most wanted crime suspect, just like men believe, had fled the country way before his arrest was announced.
01:33And his present location has been traced to Southeast Asia's haven for tourists
01:37as well as a known hub for scams and transnational crime, Cambodia.
01:42So says DILG head honcho Secretary John Vikrimulia in a TV interview earlier today,
01:48citing a police team has been dispatched to the Khmer Nation care of a tip from whistleblower
01:54and former close and associate Julie Patindongan,
01:57who is also a state witness against Ang on illegal detention and homicide raps with which he has been charged.
02:04PNP team dispatched to Cambodia is working hard to engage with their Khmer counterparts
02:09and verify his location there or perhaps across the border in Thailand.
02:15Still, PNP detectives and policemen have not let up trying to track Ang's location here at home
02:22without any positive and verified whereabouts of Ang.
02:27Ang left the country knowing full well someone, friend, foe or even inner circle people working for him.
02:33It was just a matter of time until someone rapped it on him,
02:36especially with a 10 million passive bounty on his head.
02:42Tuberculosis remains a highly infectious disease whose treatment could take anywhere from 3 to 9 months of isolation and medication.
02:50And yet close to a million and a half still succumb to the illness each year.
02:54A molecular bioengineer from UCLA has developed a new tuberculosis test
03:01which takes on the insufficiencies of existing diagnostics such as skin, blood, x-ray, symptom, urine, and other existing tests.
03:11VOA's Henia Dulo tells us more in this VOA logon report.
03:16Burundi native Mireka Marisa is a molecular bioengineer at the University of California, Los Angeles.
03:26She came up with a simple yet effective test for the presence of tuberculosis bacteria.
03:32This sugary powder, when mixed with water and a patient's phlegm or blood,
03:37will within hours detect the bacteria that cause the deadly lung disease.
03:42The genesis of this whole project was the concept of taking something that bacteria love to ingest,
03:50the sugar in this case, and then putting a biosensor on it.
03:55And then seeing if that works and it didn't work. That was great.
03:59Existing TB tests have drawbacks.
04:01They can take weeks like a culture test,
04:04can register false results like a smear test,
04:07or are expensive, like a molecular test,
04:10says UCLA Life Sciences Dean Tracy Johnson.
04:14She's focused on making that dye more specific and brighter
04:21so that even very common microscopes that are available in places like field clinics in Uganda
04:27where can even be detected in those circumstances.
04:30And that's really a game changer.
04:32Kamariza says her test shows if the bacteria are alive or dead,
04:37which helps to determine if a person is contagious.
04:40And it quickly detects if a patient is responding to treatment.
04:45And it will be inexpensive.
04:47The powder that we make is very cheap to make.
04:49Especially when you make it on a grand scale, it's going to be less than $1 a test.
04:54According to the World Health Organization,
04:571.3 million people died from tuberculosis in 2022.
05:03Kamariza hopes her test will be able to significantly reduce this number.

05:16And so we've come to the end of tonight's show.
