Victorians have sweltered through the state's hottest day on record. Temperatures soared well into the 40s in most of the state with the Mallee towns of Walpeup, Ouyen and Hopetoun reaching 48.9 degrees eclipsing the old record set in 2009. A cool change is sweeping through most regions tonight but in the north-west the heatwave will continue well into the weekend.

00:00A kind of heat never seen before in Victoria.
00:06I haven't been around for a heat like this, so it's definitely getting to me.
00:10In the small Mallee town of Ooyan, keeping cool was the order of the day.
00:15But this was extreme, the temperature soaring through the day until it reached 48.9 degrees Celsius,
00:22a new statewide record.
00:24And as locals discovered, hot enough to fry almost anything.
00:29My hand's burning.
00:31At John Murray's farm in Wolpiup, the ground temperature climbed even higher.
00:36An oven, like I wouldn't even be putting me hand on a piece of iron or anything like that.
00:41Like that's how extremely hot it is, like you wouldn't be able to handle anything.
00:46The temperature in Albury-Wodonga climbed above 40 for the third day in a row,
00:51as locals took respite along the mighty Murray.
00:54Because the road gets hot.
00:56Don't walk her, she sits up on here, on my lap on the way home.
01:00The animals at Victoria's zoos were being looked after too, keeping cool with their own iced treats.
01:06They want to get to the food inside the ice block, so they'll smash the ice up.
01:09Others will take their time, they're a little bit more patient, and they'll slowly lick through the ice to get to the food.
01:14Those looking to beat the heat in Melbourne were either up before dawn getting their exercise in, or choosing an appropriate indoor activity.
01:22Guess it's 10, 10 degrees.
01:25Well it's really cold in here actually.
01:27But plenty were happy to push ahead with more traditional hot day activities.
01:31We are here for the Australian Open, but 45 it could be a little bit too much.
01:37At the Australian Open, fans of all kinds were working hard.
01:41We're going to stay as long as we can handle the heat.
01:45I know it's going to get pretty hot later on and that might be my limit.
01:49This is just one day in an extended heatwave here in Oyen.
01:53This is the fourth day in a row the temperature has soared well above 40 degrees.
01:57And maximums are set to stay there until Sunday.
02:01We're here now so we'll just enjoy a cold drink and call it quits for the day.
02:06A hard earned thirst.
02:08Okay.
02:10So many more things like it.
02:12And you're a portion of the heatwave.
02:14You're $5 million, so you'll need to enjoy a big thing from all the time.
02:17It's really easy.
02:18It's really nice.
02:19It's really weird.
02:20Like theART program, you're not so good at getting a cold drink,
02:22but you're supposed to do this.
02:24If you're getting hot in your boat and have hot, you're going to go above them,
02:26you could wait a little bit.
02:28Yeah, I'm going to get that fast.
02:30You may walk by then,
