00:00Here in Horsham we've just reached our hottest ever temperature on record at 47.8 degrees,
00:08which is slightly cooler than in Wolpeup, who's just broken the state record for the
00:14hottest temperature ever.
00:15The last record was 48.8 degrees and that was back in the Black Saturday bushfires in
00:22Hopeton, also in the north-west of the state.
00:25But other local temperatures and records are also being tumbled as we speak, that includes
00:29in Mildura where the temperature's 48.4 degrees, Longrenong where it's 48.1 degrees, Mortlake
00:35is 46.3, not 60, Hamilton's 45 degrees and Warrnambool's also 45 degrees and I understand
00:43that there's some areas in Melbourne which are getting that hot as well, including Blaviton,
00:46but it's certainly a scorcher.
00:48And how are residents feeling?
00:50What do the streets in town look like, pretty deserted?
00:55You would think that, but here in Horsham it's business as usual.
00:58Everyone's still working outside, inside, they're out with the kids, going to appointments,
01:02it's just as busy in the main street as it regularly is, which I guess goes to show how
01:08strong this community is and they're still getting about their day.
01:11Further north in Oyen I've heard of a dicier situation just recently where farmers had
01:16to pull over and rescue a German backpacker who was stranded on the side of the road in
01:20this heat with no fuel, no way to get out of it.
01:24That's a reminder to stay vigilant, I guess, in this extreme heat.
01:27Yeah, and we can see there's not much movement in those plants behind you.
01:33The big concern with these fires, Sioux fires burning to the kind of south-east of you in
01:37that Otways area is that those winds are going to start hitting it.
01:41Have you felt the south-westerly change blow through Horsham at all yet?
01:47There's certainly no wind here at the moment and that's a godsend for us.
01:51We've just been ravaged by bushfires a couple of weeks ago and we've lost about 30 buildings
01:55because of those intense wind changes which picked up those fires.
02:00So I think we're all pretty happy here that there's no wind at the moment but we are looking
02:03forward to a cooler change later on tonight.
